Pickaway County is a story about careful cultivation. A story of growth with intention And a close eye on the right fit for our space. A place with enough resources to be choosy And the curiosity to experiment. There are generations here, Each learning from the other, And work is play is life. We are at once history and future, Enduring and upstart, Near the city but not of the city. In Pickaway County, we go forward together, Whether it’s people, business, or the country around us. It’s an open invitation for a day or forever. The only place to find that restaurant. Those gatherings. That farm. Pickaway County is a way of life. A place of life. A place for new roots to last for years to come.

Welcome! Welcome to Pickaway County – we hope your visit today is a catalyst for future trips! Situated at the crossroads of U.S. Highways 22 and 23, the Pickaway County Welcome Center greets visitors, businesses, tourists and neighbors alike. The center offers information about the community, the county, the region and the state of Ohio. Located near the entrance to Historic Downtown Circleville, the center provides maps and brochures for area attractions, unique gift items, and a rotating display of regional highlights. Free wireless internet service is available in the lobby, and our gregarious staff is ready to assist in any way they can. Pickaway has its origins in the native word, “Piqua” meaning “risen from ashes.” Pickaway County, founded in 1810, has deep roots in Native American history and many protected Indian burial mounds can be explored throughout the area. Today, the county has more than 57,000 residents, with a median age of 39.3. Agriculture reigns supreme here, with nearly 300,000 acres of farmland within county lines. With a median annual income of $58,706, higher than the U.S. median annual income, there are 1.47 times more people working in the agriculture industry than would be expected in a location of this size. Other industries represented within the county are healthcare and social assistance, retail trade, and manufacturing. Several major players within these industries call Pickaway County home, including PPG, DuPont, Georgia Pacific and Sofidel. OhioHealth Berger Hospital, a nationally-recognized organization with a number of awards for patient care, also calls the county home. Small businesses are the lifeblood of the U.S. economy and Pickaway County as well. Entrepreneurship is about taking risks and many of our residents have taken major risks to become not only the entrepreneurs of today, but of the future. Finally, in order for a community to educate its residents and provide outstanding opportunities for those residents to diversify their skill sets, it must have a sense of community spirit. Pickaway County is home to Ohio Christian University, Pickaway-Ross Career & Technology Center, four area school districts (Circleville, Logan Elm, Teays Valley and Westfall) and Pickaway County Board of Developmental Disabilities. No visit to Pickaway County is complete without a tasty treat from the country’s oldest confectionery, Wittich’s Candy Shop. If you cherish a place that offers a safe, hometown feel where everything from boutique shops to delicious eats are within walking distance, you’ve come to the right place!

A Pickaway History Lord Dunmore

Chief Logan

The recorded history of Pickaway County began in 1774 when Lord Dunmore led an army into the Ohio Valley in a war with Native Americans. Known as Lord Dunmore’s War, troops were camped east of Circleville at Camp Charlotte. As casualties mounted, a meeting was arranged to draw up a truce. The meeting took place on the Pickaway Plains under a gargantuan elm tree. This particular elm tree became known as the Logan Elm. During the meeting, the famous speech of Chief Logan was delivered. Logan’s speech has been translated into virtually every language and is widely known as one of the most eloquent speeches ever delivered. Ancient inhabitants graced this area several thousand years before the Native Americans. The evidence of their existence is found in the form of prehistoric burial mounds. A remarkable specimen of the ancient mounds, Greek Cross, can be found near the small village of Tarlton.

The Villages of Pickaway of the ancient earthworks disappeared. Serving as the county seat,Circleville is now home to Ohio Christian University and the newly renovated Pickaway Agriculture and Event Center. Each year the city hosts the Circleville Pumpkin Show, which brings nearly 500,000 people to the area.

3Commercial Point Settled in 1841 as Genoa, this village had a name change to Rome in 1843 and finally to Commercial Point in 1872. Go karts have been racing in Commercial Point since 1968. Commercial Point also hosts its annual homecoming celebration every June.

Ohio’s Small Town Museum, Ashville

Pickaway County is located in the Virginia Military Grant of 1784, west of the Scioto River and The Congress Lands of 1785, and east of the Scioto River. The first permanent settlers arrived in late 1796 or early 1797 and erected cabins along an old Indian trail that ran between Lancaster and Chillicothe. One of the first permanent settlements was Newellstown, now known as Tarlton, which was established in 1801 along the Indian trail, or Zane’s Trace. Pickaway County was created by an act of Ohio Legislature in 1810 from three surrounding counties, and Circleville was designated the county seat in 1811.

The Shawnee Indians had several villages and a large burial ground in the vicinity of Darby. Darby Creek, which flows along the village, is a national and state scenic river. Both the creek and the community were named for the Shawnee Indian Chief Darby.

Eight incorporated villages are found in Pickaway County: Ashville, Commercial Point, Darbyville, New Holland, Orient, South Bloomfield, Tarlton and Williamsport. The city of Circleville is the county seat.

1Ashville Nine miles from Columbus, Ashville was formed in 1810 and named for the band of Shawnee Indians, known as the Pekowi, who inhabited the area. It is home to the Ohio Small Town Museum, which houses America’s oldest working traffic light. It also hosts a large July 4th celebration in its spacious community park.

2Circleville When Pickaway County was formed in 1810, Circleville was laid out to conform to prehistoric circular earthworks with streets radiating from an octagonal courthouse in the center. 1838, an effort began to “Square the Circle,” and over the next 20 years all traces DESTINATION PICKAWAY 2020

6Orient Orient was established as a station on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the northwest corner of Scioto Township. Located in the northwestern part of Pickaway County, the village of Orient is known for its proximity to the Pickaway County Correctional Reception Center and the Corrections Training Academy.

7South Boomfield Originally a stagecoach stop on the Columbus-Chillicothe line, the town was

Settled in 1818, this village is located nine miles west of Circleville, and is the geographical center of Ohio. It was noted as a health spa because of the mineral spring. The village hosts an annual Deer Creek Dam Days festival the last weekend of May.

Business Grows Here Pickaway County is primarily an agricultural community. Many families still declare farming as their occupation and sole source of income. Our farmers are changing with the times in improvements, yields, planting methods and contributions to the food and fuel economy of our state. For more than 200 years, farmers have been the backbone of our community’s economy. Currently, Pickaway County ranks third in the state in corn production and seventh in soybean production. Circleville is also home to PPG, Georgia Pacific and tier-two plastic manufacturers for the automotive industry. Other significant employers in Pickaway County include Ohio Willow Wood, an industry leader in the manufacture of prosthetics, and American Wood Fibers, which supplies wood flour to industrial markets throughout the Midwest. Not every community can state that while they are an agricultural community and also home to Fortune 500 companies. DuPont, which manufactures high-technology applications for consumer electronics, owns a plant located in Circleville that currently employs about 500 people, with 46 jobs to be added by 2021 with their new Kapton production line expansion. More recent additions and expansions to our county include Trimold, LLC’s recentlycompleted 60,000-square foot plant expansion at their location on Pittsburgh Road, where they manufacture resin-based products for automobiles. This expansion will improve production efficiency, safety and production capacity. Sofidel Group, the sixth-largest manufacturer of tissue paper with operations in 13 countries, has been operating in Pickaway County for two years. Founded in Porcari, Italy nearly 50 years ago, this tissue manufacturer is still privately held by the families of the founders. This project represents its first 34

U.S. greenfield project. The 1.8 millionsquare foot plant is just south of Circleville and employs 300 people. Distributions and Logistics

The Rickenbacker Intermodal Terminal is owned and operated by Norfolk Southern Railroad (NS). This truck-to-train and train-to-truck facility opened in 2008 and

is estimated that will handle up to 400,000 lifts at full capacity. The Intermodal provides a direct link to international markets through the Port of Northfolk, Vir., via the Heartland Corridor. The Rickenbacker Global Logistics Park is located in Harrison and Madison townships in the northeast corner of Pickaway

County. The park extends into Franklin County to the north. Owned by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority and developed by Duke Realty, this 600-acre park has the potential for 20,000 jobs over the next 15-20 years. The park is home to many distribution centers, one of the largest being Amazon. Companies see the potential in Pickaway County and continue to expand and grow in our community. Just one example is Health Care Logistics (HCL), a health care industry leader specializing in manufacturing, packaging, and distributing unique and hard-to-find products. Their headquarters is located in Circleville. The Ohio Christian University Business Innovation Center (OCUBIC) opened in the summer of 2017 and will have incubator space for startup businesses and entrepreneurs, focusing mostly on agricultural, technology and logistics businesses. The OCUBIC also houses the office for Pickaway Progress Partnership – P3 – Pickaway County’s economic development agency.

We serve breakfast and would love to cater your next event!

The Teays Aquifer is a valuable resource running under the county that provides an abundance of water to industrial and residential users alike. As a result, sewer and water is provided by municipalities within their boundaries and a private company, Earnhart Hill, provides water to many areas outside these boundaries. The county’s electrical service is provided by South Central Power Company and American Electric Power, and natural gas is provided by Columbia Gas.

The schools are divided into three districts: Logan Elm District services the eastern and southern county areas, Teays Valley District serves the northern section, and Westfall District that serves the western portion of the county. A number of preschools and private schools are scattered throughout the county, including New Hope Christian Academy, that provides K-12 education. Additionally, two vocational schools, Pickaway-Ross Joint Vocational and Eastland Joint Vocational School, serve students as they get ready for the workforce.

Higher Education Pickaway County is home to the main campus of Ohio Christian University, with a heritage dating back to 1948. OCU offers numerous programs that focus on development of students intellectually, spiritually and professionally. Both undergrad and adult degree programs are offered in diverse programs, such as business management, chemical dependency, pastoral ministry and teacher education, with the new addition of a master’s degree option. Online classes are available for the adult degree program and are also offered at satellite campuses in surrounding areas. Numerous options are available for higher education in the surrounding area, including The Ohio State University, Capital University, Columbus State Community College and Franklin University, all located in nearby Columbus. 36
