Pickaway has it origins in the native word, “Piqua” meaning “risen from ashes.” Pickaway County, founded in 1810, has deep roots in Native American history and myriad protected Indian burial mounds are still located throughout the area.

Today, the county has more than 57,000 residents, with a median age of 39.3. Agriculture reigns supreme here, with nearly 300,000 acres of farmland within county lines. With a median annual income of $58,706, which is higher than the median annual income in the U.S., there are 1.47 times more people working in the agriculture industry than would be expected in a location of this size. Other industries represented within the county are healthcare and social assistance, retail trade and manufacturing. Several major players within these industries call Pickaway County home, including PPG, DuPont, Georgia Pacific and Sofidel. Berger Health System, a nationally recognized organization with a number of awards for patient care, also calls the county home. Small businesses are the lifeblood of the economy and Pickaway county is no exception. Entrepreneurship is about taking risks and many of our residents have taken major risks to become not only the entrepreneurs of today, but into the future. Lastly, in order for a community to educate their residents and provide outstanding opportunities for those residents to diversify their skill sets, it must have a sense of community spirit. Pickaway County is home to Ohio Christian University, PickawayRoss Career & Technology Center, four area school districts (Circleville, Logan Elm, Teays Valley and Westfall) and Pickaway County Board of Developmental Disabilities. A single visit to Pickaway County will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. No visit is complete without a tasty treat from the country’s oldest confectionary, Wittich’s Candy Shop. If you cherish a place that offers a safe, hometown feel where everything from boutique shops to delicious eats are within walking distance, you’ve come to the right place. We hope you will enjoy your stay, whether it’s for a day, a week or a lifetime! Tim Wilson

A Pickaway History THE RECORDED history of Pickaway County began in 1774 when Lord Dunmore led an army into the Ohio Valley in a war with Native Americans. Known as Lord Dunmore’s War, troops were camped east of Circleville at Camp Charlotte.

As casualties mounted, a meeting was arranged to draw up a truce. The meeting took place on the Pickaway Plains under a gargantuan elm tree. During this meeting, the famous speech of Chief Logan was delivered. This particular elm tree became known as the Logan Elm. Logan’s speech has been translated into virtually every language and is widely known as one of the most eloquent speeches ever delivered. Ancient inhabitants graced this area several thousand years before even the Native Americans. The evidence of their existence is in the form of prehistoric burial mounds. A remarkable specimen of the ancient mounds, Greek Cross, can be found near the small village of Tarlton.

The Villages of Pickaway PICKAWAY COUNTY is located in the Virginia Military Grant of 1784, west of the Scioto River and The Congress Lands of 1785 east of the river. The first permanent settlers arrived in late 1796 or early 1797 and erected cabins along an old Indian trail that ran between Lancaster and Chillicothe. One of the first permanent settlements was Newellstown, now known as Tarlton, which was established in 1801 along the Indian trail, or Zane’s Trace. Pickaway County was created by an act of Ohio Legislature in 1810 from three surrounding counties, and Circleville was designated the county seat in 1811. Seven incorporated villages are found in Pickaway County: Ashville, Commercial Point, Darbyville, New Holland, South Bloomfield, Tarlton and Williamsport. Ashville Nine miles from Columbus, Ashville was formed in 1810 and named for the band of Shawnee Indians known as the Pekowi who inhabited the area. It is home to the Ashville Museum that houses America’s oldest working traffic light. It also hosts a large July 4th celebration in its spacious community park. Commercial Point Settled in 1841 as Genoa, this village had a name change to Rome in 1843 and finally to Commercial Point in 1872. It hosts the Commercial Point Homecoming celebration every June. Darbyville The Shawnee Indians had several villages and a large burial ground in the vicinity of Darby. Darby Creek, which flows along the village, is a national and state scenic river. Both the creek and the community were named for the Shawnee Indian Chief Darby. New Holland Located on the Pickaway-Fayette County Line, the town was settled in 1818 as Flemingsburg. The name was changed to New Holland and incorporated in 1835.
Deer Creek State Park is located near New Holland and features Deer Creek State Park Golf Course, with its carefully manicured greens that are perfect, smooth and bring out the best in any golfer’s game. South Bloomfield Originally a stagecoach stop on the Columbus-Chillicothe line, the town was laid in 1804. Today, it is a rapidly growing community. Millport, a village within the municipality of South Bloomfield, was established because of the Ohio-Erie Canal. Lock No. 31 on the canal can be seen today, as well as parts of the canal and towpath. Tarlton Settled in 1801 as Newellstown, Zane’s Trace passed through the community and was the principal route from Kentucky to the east. An Engineering Battalion of the Ohio Guard is headquartered outside the village. Two festivals put Tarlton on the map for entertainment including a Funfest and Fish Fry, and a Halloween parade and festival. Williamsport Settled in 1818, the village is located nine miles west of Circleville. It was noted as a health spa because of the mineral spring.

Business, Industry and the Local Economy PICKAWAY COUNTY is primarily an agricultural community. Many families still declare farming as their occupation and sole source of income. Our farmers are changing with the times in improvements and yields, planting methods and contributions to the food and fuel economy of our state. For more than 200 years, farmers have provided the backbone of our community’s economy. Currently, Pickaway County ranks third in the state in corn production and seventh in soybean production. Circleville is also home to PPG, Georgia Pacific and tier-two plastic manufacturers for the automotive industry. Other significant employers in Pickaway County include Ohio Willow Wood, an industry leader in the manufacture of prosthetics, and American Wood Fibers, which supplies wood flour to industrial markets throughout the Midwest. DuPont Electronics & Imaging

Not every community can state that while they are an agricultural community, they also are home to Fortune 500 companies. DuPont, which manufactures high-technology applications for consumer electronics, owns a plant located in Circleville that currently employs 450 people. More recent additions and expansions to our county include Trimold, LLC that recently completed a 60,000-square foot plant expansion at their location on Pittsburgh Road where it manufactures resin-based products for automobiles. This expansion will improve production efficiency, safety and production capacity. Sofidel Group, the sixth-largest manufacturer of tissue paper in the world, with operations in 13 countries chose Pickaway County for their new plant. Founded in Porcari, Italy nearly 50 years ago, this tissue manufacturer is still privately held by families of the founders. This project was their first U.S. greenfield project. They built a 1.8 million-square foot
plant just south of Circleville as part of a multipronged expansion in North America, which became operational in 2018. Distributions and Logistics The Rickenbacker Intermodal Terminal is owned and operated by Norfolk Southern Railroad (NS). This truck-to-train and train-to-truck facility opened in 2008 and it

HOMETOWN TITLE TEAM is estimated that this facility will handle up to 400,000 lifts when it reaches full capacity. The Intermodal provides a direct link to international markets through the Port of Norfolk, VA, via the Heartland Corridor. The Rickenbacker Global Logistics Park is located in Harrison and Madison townships in the northeast corner of Pickaway County. The park extends into Franklin County to the north. Owned by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority and developed by Duke Realty, this 600-acre park has the potential for 20,000 jobs over the next 15-20 years. The park is being planned in connection with the Rickenbacker Intermodal Terminal.

Companies have seen the potential in Pickaway County and have decided to continue to expand and grow in our community such as Health Care Logistics (HCL). Since 1978, HCL has been a health care industry leader specializing in manufacturing, packaging, and distributing unique and hard-to-find products. Their headquarters, located in Circleville, recently completed a new 56,000-square foot warehouse project. Approximately 50 new jobs will be created in Circleville because of this expansion project. The Ohio Christian University Business Innovation Center (OCUBIC) opened in the summer of 2017 and will have incubator space for startup businesses and entrepreneurs, focusing mostly on agricultural, technology and logistics businesses. Utilities The Teays Aquifer is a valuable resource running under the county that provides an abundance of water to industrial and residential users alike. As a result, sewer and water is provided by municipalities within their boundaries and a private company, Earnhart Hill, provides water to many areas outside these boundaries. The county’s electrical service is provided by South Central Power Company and American Electric Power, and natural gas by Columbia Gas. destination pickaway 2019

Museums Offer Slice of Small Town America The Clarke-May Museum The Clarke-May Museum, home for the Pickaway County Historical Society, is located at 162 W. Union St. in Circleville and is open to the public Tuesday-Friday from 1-4 p.m. There are exhibit rooms that contain Native American items, military uniforms and women’s dresses as well as a number of other donated items from various Pickaway County resident’s estates. Ohio’s Small Town Museum Hosting the world’s oldest working traffic light, Ohio’s Small Town Museum in Ashville, is a tribute to what volunteers and folks committed to saving local history can do. With no real budget, the museum in Ashville has sustained itself for more than 30 years. Named one of the Top 25 Museums by New Roadside American, it is a mixture of the commonplace and the unusual, attracting folks from the states and around the world. Interesting displays include one about the silver nuggets unearthed at the Snake Den Mounds, and a display about Buster, “The Dog Who Voted Republican.” A stuffed rooster now on display, while alive, would take a dime in his beak and strut to a store to pay for his own corn. Check out Chic-Chic, all six-inches tall, who died in the 1950s. The Ted Lewis Museum Circleville native and jazz band musician Ted Lewis is remembered in his own museum, The Ted Lewis Museum, which displays memorabilia related to his legendary career. Musicians like Fats Waller, the Dorseys and Benny Goodman got their start with help from Ted Lewis. The museum is housed in the only remaining building from the original town circle. Guests of the museum can see Ted Lewis in performance (via taped performances from his TV and movie appearances) at a small theater in the museum. The site is open Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Pickaway County Historical Society Two museums are operated by the Pickaway County Historical Society: the Pickaway County Historical Museum, referencing the county’s past and another, the Pickaway County Genealogy Library, with full-research material, photos, family records, deeds and more regarding the county. Community Services Coming in Summer 2019!
Pickaway Agriculture & Event Center Most of the previous Pickaway County Fairgrounds structures were erected in the 1940s-1960s. Those facilities were long outdated, were in poor condition, and some had become unsafe and unusable. The rallying cry of our community for years has been to construct a new updated fairgrounds to give exhibitors, livestock and spectators the fair experience they deserve, as well as be able to host year-round events and activities for our community. The Pickaway County Agricultural Society and Pickaway County Commissioners have partnered together to make this a reality. This project is funded largely by private donors who’ve stepped up in a big way to support this important initiative. The Pickaway County Fairgrounds has been our county’s home for agriculture for many generations. In 1834, the first Pickaway County Fair was held and has continued for nearly 200 years. In 1946,
the first building was erected to house 4-H exhibits and livestock. One year later, the Coliseum was built, a hallmark of the Pickaway County community. In the mid-1900s when finances were tight, the Fair board members personally covered the operational expenses for our County Fair
because they thought it was important for youth in Pickaway County to have a place to showcase their projects. There have been vast improvements to the fairgrounds since our first county fair and this landmark of our community continues to serve as an important community convener.
