Mercury Lane Works Update – Sheet Piling Dear neighbours, Week commencing February 24 we will begin the works for sheet piling at the Mercury Lane construction site in preparation of excavation for the new Karangahape Station. This will take place for approximately three to four weeks. What is sheet piling and how will it be staged? Sheet piles are sections of sheet steel with interlocking edges that are vibrated into the ground to form a wall and provide soil retention, excavation support and a safety barrier. They are being inserted to enable construction of the temporary access shaft (pictured below). The ten metre long steel sheet piles will be vibrated into the ground with a crane and vibrator until firm ground is reached (indicative picture below).

Indicative of sheet piling method illustrated on the left, which will be used to support soil retention and the creation of the temporary access shaft, as pictured on the right hand side.
