NEW LOOK
QUEEN STREET
coming late 2020
These images show the design for Lower Queen Street’s ātea (open space). The design was developed in partnership with Mana Whenua and in consultation with the central city community. The space will open in late 2020 and will be a spacious public area for Aucklanders to enjoy and a welcoming gateway to downtown Auckland for the millions of people who visit the city every year.
The central ātea (open space)
This view of the city centre is looking south on the pedestrianised Lower Queen Street area. The ātea (open space) is bounded by the iconic Britomart Station heritage building and the modern Commercial Bay precinct. The pavement patterns reflect shallow waves lapping on the edge of Waitematā Harbour, leading on to the whāriki (woven mat), where Aucklanders and visitors can meet. Permanent seating is featured, some under the shade of mature pohutukawa trees to complement the food and beverage offerings in the area.
A bustling and vibrant open space
Looking north from Customs Street towards the historic Auckland ferry building and Queen’s Wharf. Walk past the high-end retail along the Commercial Bay frontage and the iconic Chief Post Office building and experience the ambience of the soft lighting strung under the pohutukawa trees. You’ll be able to move easily through the space to catch public transport or to walk home or to work, or to the many entertainment and shopping venues in the central city.
Waitematā Harbour edge
This view is looking north along the Commercial Bay side of the plaza towards mature pohutukawa trees, the central whāriki (woven mat) and Queen’s Wharf. With Britomart Station to the right, this busy area will become the perfect place for public events and to meet your friends and family.
