NOTIFICATION OF UPCOMING UTILITY WORK IN YOUR AREA

Dear neighbour, City Rail Link (CRL) would like to advise you of upcoming utility works planned in your area. These works are required to take place ahead of the construction of CRL’s Karangahape Station which is expected to begin in the second half of next year. The utility works will be undertaken by two contractors in two phases; 1)

Investigation Work I. Manhole investigation Beresford Sq, Pitt St, Karangahape Rd, Mercury Ln Tuesday 2nd - Friday 6th October, 7am – 5pm

II. Trench investigation Beresford Sq (one location only) Expected to begin mid-late October and be completed over one weekend

Main Diversion Work I. Trench work Mercury Ln and Cross St Expected to begin in January 2019 and completed in stages over 6 months

II. Trench work Beresford Sq and Pitt St Expected to begin in January – April 2019 and completed in stages over 6 months

Once we have contractors on board and have confirmed methodology and timing, we will be back in touch to provide more information.

1) Investigation Works Beresford Square, Pitt Street Why are they required? and Karangahape Road Manhole Investigation CRL needs to confirm the exact location of existing utility services such as electricity, gas, water, sewerage and telecom assets below ground in order to divert them away from the construction area of the underground station.

What’s involved?

These works involve locating, uncovering and recording the location of underground utilities.

Manhole investigations: CRL contractor, Stockmans will be lifting manhole lids on Beresford Sq, Pitt St, K Rd and Mercury Lane to inspect what’s underneath.

Cross Street Manhole investigations will begin within the next few Manhole Investigation days. Contractors will be on Pitt St from 9am – 3pm and Beresford Square and Mercury Lane from 7am – 5pm, Tuesday – Friday, weather permitting.

The trench work is expected to start in mid/late-October 2018 with the exact date to be confirmed one week in advance. Investigations will take place on a Saturday and Sunday between the hours of 7am and 5pm to avoid busy weekday periods.

We anticipate the trench investigations will take only one weekend to complete. However, a second weekend may be required as a result of unfavourable weather or underground conditions.

Trenching: We will need to dig a single, shallow 1m-wide trench near the near the corner of Beresford Sq and Pitt St (see map).

In order to carry out the trench work we will need to complete some concrete cutting and use a hydro-vac machine, which uses a high-pressure water spray and vacuum to remove soil and reveal the utility services underneath.

What to expect during these works The manhole investigations will cause minimal disturbance and will take approximately 10-30 minutes at each location.

There will be some noise associated with the trench work, particularly during the concrete cutting and hydrovac operations.

We aim to undertake the noisiest works on the Saturday.

Padded barriers will be used to reduce noise disruption.

Parking spaces may be affected on Beresford Square during the trench investigation.

2) Main Diversion Works Beresford Square and Why are they required? Pitt Street Utility Diversion A number of utility services currently exist within the underground station designation. To ensure these essential services are maintained, we need to divert them away from the station area ahead of construction taking place.

What’s involved?

We will need to dig sectional trenches around Beresford Sq and Pitt St, and Mercury Ln and Cross St as shown in yellow on the maps to the right.

The method to relocate the services themselves will be known once the investigation work is complete.

Temporary fences will in place for safety. These will be moved as each section of work is completed.

When will this work happen and how long will it take?

Full details of diversion works, including methodology and timing, will be known once we have a contractor on board and they have analysed the results of the investigations undertaken.

However, we anticipate this work is likely to begin between January and April 2019. Depending on methodology, diversions will take up to 6 months Mercury Lane and to complete with each section being in place for Cross Street approximately 5 weeks.

What to expect during these works.

Like the investigation works, there will be noise associated with the diversion, particularly during the concrete cutting and hydrovac operations. Padded barriers will be used to reduce noise disruption.

A number of on-street car parks will be affected at different times during the diversion. We will endeavour to keep parking impacts to a minimum during each stage.

Traffic diversions may be put in place when trenching is required in the road reserve.

Pedestrian and vehicle access to buildings will be maintained at all times.

Timing, methodology and staging has not been set at this point, however we will be in contact with more information once this is confirmed.
