Concept design for what high density residential and commercial development might look like around the Mt Eden Station.

CRL creates housing and job opportunities City Rail Link (CRL) benefits are more than just improving public transport access to most parts of the city centre and major employment areas.

The project has identified about 200,000sqm of development potential after construction of the 3.45km twin-tunnel underground rail link below the city centre is completed.

This will achieve the broader transformational objectives of the Auckland Plan and support government housing initiatives. The potential is estimated to be around 1400 new dwellings and around 4800 new jobs at these locations.

Due for completion in 2023/24, CRL includes a redeveloped Mt Eden Station and two new underground stations – one mid-town at Wellesley and Victoria Streets and one uptown at Mercury Lane, off Karangahape Road.

The likely combined commercial development gross floor area is about 65,000sqm at the Britomart, Aotea, Karangahape and Mt Eden sites. The likely combined residential development area is about 130,000sqm, most of which will be at Mt Eden, with some at Karangahape.

This potential includes: • Land at the rear of the Britomart Transport Centre • The Aotea Station site which includes the west Bledisloe Car Park • The Karangahape Road station site • About 4.6 hectares at Mt Eden including road reserve and the land acquired for the main construction yard, station and trenches.

Five new archaeological finds at Britomart Some more interesting archaeological items have been found by CRL contractors during excavations at Britomart’s Chief Post Office (CPO) construction site.

The artefacts include: • A 91mm-high clear rectangular perfume bottle, embossed with the name Rimmel, dated from the mid to late 19th century. The House of Rimmel is a French perfumery based in London. The company was established in 1834, specialising in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, bath oils and pomades.

• A decorative 186mm-high aqua-coloured salad oil bottle, dated 1845 to 1910. An identical bottle was recently recovered in

Christchurch with an intact label showing ‘George Whybrow’s Sublime Salad Oil’. A 174mmhigh complete aqua green cylindrical condiment/food bottle with the foil still intact around the neck, dated mid to late 19th century.

• A rectangular 177mm-high cobalt blue medicinal bottle with the side panels embossed with ‘The Mexican’ and ‘Hair Renewer’ and the base with a cross. Mexican Hair Renewer was advertised from as early as 1873 until 1920.

The manufacturing technique of the bottle dates it to the late 19th century.

• A 450mm-high wooden stake, mostly likely made from an Australian hardwood and used for boxing or similar. CRL archaeologists believe it was likely used in the construction of the CPO, which was completed in 1912.

Tunnel box construction starts under Albert Street

Construction has started on Albert Street’s first City Rail Link (CRL) tunnel box.

Contractor Connectus JV is planning to start the base pour for the first of the 29 box sections of the tunnel in March. Once about 60 metres of the tunnel box is constructed, the team can start backfilling up to road level.

The process of building the tunnel box sections involves a number of steps: • A smooth surface needs to be constructed along the pile line, against which the tunnel walls can be poured. Steel mesh and pins are installed into the piles, followed by a sprayed concrete application known as ‘shotcreting’. The shotcreting team has already completed the first 44 metres section of

the shotcrete surface.

• A base ‘blinding’ layer is poured to form a level and clean working surface. The first 44 metres of blinding has also been completed.

• Waterproofing membrane is then hung against the shotcrete surface and laid across the blinding layer.

• Steel reinforcement will be tied and formwork (temporary moulds into which concrete will be poured) installed as the pouring of the tunnel boxes progresses.

These steps will be followed until 350 metres of CRL tunnel is constructed down Albert Street. Ahead of this activity, bulk excavation of the cut-and-cover trench on Albert Street is continuing towards the Customs Street intersection.

Wolfe Street traffic changes Traffic flow on Wolfe Street has reverted to its original direction, meaning motorists can again turn left onto Albert Street. However, motorists travelling along Albert Street can no longer turn left into Wolfe Street.

Access to Wolfe Street will be available via Hobson and Federal Streets.

The set-up of Albert Street is now in a ‘steady state’ for traffic flow and will remain unchanged until late 2018 while CRL construction works continue.

Mt Eden stormwater realignment works to begin City Rail Link construction work is about to move to Mt Eden for the first time.

In a few weeks, contractor March Bessac JV will start diverting a section of the existing Mt Eden stormwater pipe, creating a new alignment between Water and Nikau Streets because the existing pipe is in the path of the future CRL tunnels.

All the surface work for the stormwater diversion will be on CRL-owned property with minimal effect on traffic.

Shafts will be constructed at Water and Nikau Streets to provide underground access for a micro tunnel-boring machine that will simultaneously excavate the ground and install a new stormwater pipe using a pipe-jacking technique.

Before work starts, one CRL-owned building on Mt Eden Road and another on Ruru Street will be demolished as part of this work.

The stormwater realignment works will finish around April 2019.

Goodbye, Sandrine The bright red 90 tonne piling rig called Sandrine that has been working around Britomart Station’s historic Chief Post Office (CPO) building has finished work. It also means the distinctive red silos outside the CPO are no longer required.

The rig has played a major part in preparing for the CRL tunnel construction under the CPO. With

Sandrine’s help, 64 diaphragm (or D-walls) have been built for CRL by the Downer Soletanche Bachy JV construction workers.

The continuous wall panels form the structural support for the tunnels to be built in the CPO and also to prevent water ingress.

Secant piling begins in March Work is expected to begin next month on the installation of 70 secant pile walls across Lower Queen Street.

Made of reinforced concrete, secant pile walls lock together for strength and to control any ground-water ingress into the tunnel excavation.

The secant pile walls will begin where the D-walls end, continuing across Lower Queen Street towards Precinct Properties’ Commercial Bay development, where CRL tunnel boxes are already being constructed.

Canopy removal works to start

This canopy on the AA building will be taken down as part of CRL enabling works on Albert St

The canopies of four Albert Street buildings are programmed to be removed between March and September this year to create space for the piling rig that is required to install the ground support system for CRL’s future Aotea Station.

The affected buildings - AA, Manhattan, SkyCity and Auckland Council - are located on the western side of Albert Street between Victoria and Wellesley Streets.

CRL is also taking the opportunity to relocate all the utility services from in front of these buildings, as they are within the footprint of the new station. The utility works are likely to start by August and run through to about April 2019.

Undertaking these enabling works early will reduce the overall impact of CRL project works on businesses along this stretch of Albert Street. They will reduce the length of the main construction programme.

Last chance for station arts initiative

The deadline has been extended for Auckland primary schools to register their interest in an exciting CRL arts initiative.

Year 6 students in 2018 will have the chance to create unique artworks that will be prominently displayed in the country’s busiest rail station,

located under Albert Street, once it opens to the public in 2023/24.

Please check with your local school that it’s signed up to take part. Schools should register with Sonya Leahy in the CRL project team at sonya.leahy@ cityraillink.govt.nz by 23 March.

CRL tunnel progress at Commercial Bay

Here’s how the CRL tunnels on Precinct Properties’ Commercial Bay site are looking this week.

By April this year, 100 metres of CRL rail tunnel will be built through this development site between Lower Queen and Albert Streets. It will join the tunnels coming down Albert Street and those coming from Britomart Station.

Trapped kitten finds love on Valentine’s Day On Valentine’s Day, workers at the CRL’s Britomart site found a tiny black kitten trapped in a barrier and covered in mud.

Nicknamed “Voodoo Valentine” by the Downer Soletanche Bachy workers who found him, the scared and malnourished eight-week-old kitten was cleaned up, fed and comforted by the workers while they waited to see if he belonged to any of the immediate neighbours.

Shadow is pictured here with Ibrahim’s daughter Tanha, who adores her new pet.

The cute puss became a social media favourite – his story receiving more than 720 likes and more than 25 shares on CRL’s Facebook page.
