The City Rail Link includes turning Britomart Station from a terminus to a through station. Those who will be doing this in a sensitive heritage building are the Soletanche Bachy and Downer Joint Venture. They bring broad experience to the extremely complex engineering requirements of the project. Sited in the former Chief Post Office (CPO), the station is internationally recognised for its innovative but also heritage-sympathetic architecture. The same attention to heritage will be vital to the next stage of its life. Soletanche Bachy, a multinational company renowned for foundation projects in sensitive heritage sites, has worked on underground metros in most of the world’s major cities. It has restored historical monuments such as the Arc de Triomphe and Grand Palais in Paris and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. It also redeveloped St Pancras Railway Station in London, known as “the cathedral of railways,” as a Eurostar Terminus for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL).
