CRL Connection

December 2015

Iwi blessing for CRL start Work has started on the City Rail Link following a blessing by kaumatua to prepare the site. Chants of prayer echoed the streets of central Auckland as AT staff, the Mayor and others close to the project gathered for the blessing of the site between Swanson and Wellesley Streets. Following the blessing, guests shared a breakfast which included a surprise gift from project consultants Jasmax, in the form of a creative baking masterpiece created by one of their staff who designs cakes as well as well as train stations Work to relocate utilities began shortly after the dawn ceremony and will continue into February (see schedule for more details). By the New Year, CRL contractors Connectus will begin to realign the stormwater pipe machine using a micro tunnel boring machine beneath Albert Street through pipejack shafts at intersections. Early works construction Early works construction timeline The only visible sign of the pipe jack work will be the shafts located on the intersections of Albert and Swanson, Victoria and Wellesley Streets. To reduce construction time and disturbance to the local community, there will be a dual focus on the Orakei Main Sewer strengthening during the storm water relocation. The Orakei Main Sewer work will begin at Victoria Street West on the Mai Thai corner. A micro TBM will travel underground to the Surf ‘n Snow backpackers on the opposite side of Albert and Victoria Street West.

Pipe jacking stormwater diversion up Albert Street: December 2015 – May 2017 (approximately)

The stormwater pipe relocation will begin at the Victoria Street shaft by Surf ‘n Snow. A different mini TBM will travel underground to Swanson Street then removed once received. The TBM will be transported back to Victoria Street shaft, reinstalled and make its way to Wellesley Street to complete the pipe jacking work. This process will take approximately 17 months to complete.

Pipe jacking impacts • Pedestrian and cyclist access maintained at all times • Intersection at Albert and both Victoria and Wellesley Streets will be reduced to one lane • No traffic flow on Swanson Street whilst shafts are being built or used • Consent standards will apply to noise levels

We are designing the hoardings to keep our city attractive and tell the CRL story. They will have concept images for the stations and explain the CRL’s role in creating an integrated public transport system for Auckland.

Build is On campaign To get Aucklanders ready for change in the city, a campaign will start in February to remind people that the CRL and other major city construction is about to start. This is a great time to find alternatives to driving through the city centre. To keep congestion to a manageable level, we’ll all need to think smart about our travel. AT has already reconfigured bus routes, created new bus lanes, changed bus stop locations, removed some parking spaces and re-arranged traffic lanes in preparation for the CRL. There will be more changes to come. Please sign me up to the CRL Early Works Newsletter email list. email CRLproject@aucklandtransport.govt.nz
