This publication is a collaboration between the Columbus Young Professionals Club, The Columbus Foundation, Greater Columbus Arts Council, and Columbus City Council. It is part of a larger initiative to offer accessible city guides that help tell the Columbus story through neighborhoods, nonprofits, and notable people.

The Columbus region is home to more than 2.4 million residents and, according to the MidOhio Regional Planning Commission, has added an additional 43,000 new people in the past year.

That’s an average of 118 new residents moving here every day! As our city continues to grow, we want to help you keep pace with the amazing places to live, work, give, and explore.

Whether you’re new to town or if you’ve lived here your entire life, you know that Columbus is an extremely welcoming city, with fabulous neighborhoods to explore, nationally-known corporations and small business incubators, a vibrant arts community, hard-working and fun people with a philanthropic pulse, and plenty of amenities for anyone looking to plant roots.

The Value of Art in our City

I

continue to be inspired by the cultural fabric of our community. Every city strives to attract businesses, new residents, and visitors of all ages to their city. How we do that in Columbus is the secret in the sauce. In Columbus we have incredibly talented artists and world-class arts organizations that attract national and international attention.

It’s the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s goal to help everyone understand the tremendous value the arts have for Columbus and the role our cultural organizations play in supporting the people in our community.

To help accomplish this we promote our unique collection of talent through the Art Makes Columbus/Columbus Makes Art campaign. Entering its fourth year, the campaign now features more than 60 Columbus artists in diverse disciplines and their video stories are getting hundreds of thousands of views. Each year the web traffic to ColumbusMakesArt.com and our event calendar grows, as more and more people engage in cultural events—from free festivals, like the Columbus Arts Festival (which the Arts Council produces), to original events only available in our city to internationally touring shows. The Art Makes Columbus campaign supports our cultural organizations in marketing their own events—in the past five years GCAC grantees saw an increase of more than 29 percent in their earned revenue.

A critical component of every nonprofit arts and cultural organization’s income is public support and this is true in cities across the country. The amount of public support directly impacts what kinds of programs organizations can provide for the community outside of their paid tickets and admissions. This is the critical support provided by the Arts Council through the hotel motel bed tax and soon the recently passed 5% ticket fee.

The Arts Council reinvests these dollars in our artists to build an environment where talented creatives want to live and work. This public investment positively impact our economy and quality of life as cultural organizations are able to expand programs in K-12 and in low-income neighborhoods and create critically acclaimed exhibitions and productions. In the last year Arts Council grantees provided more than one million arts education experiences for school children and created unique collaborations and productions that received national attention.

Research proves that a thriving cultural community helps attract creative talent and businesses, supports economic development and jobs, improves our neighborhoods, and positively impacts the lives of young people.

When we each do our small part, we are each investing in our city’s success. Columbus, I encourage you to support the arts and cultural organizations, programs, events, and artists that are the special sauce that helps our city thrive.

The Arts Brighten our Lives

A

rt makes Columbus. Columbus makes art. This phrase has become an iconic tagline that reminds natives and newcomers alike the critical role that art plays in our community’s success. Venues like the Ohio and Lincoln Theatres unite working moms and business executives, college students and neighborhood leaders. Whether it is riding the high wire unicycle at COSI or playing at Franklin Park Conservatory’s new Children’s Garden, arts and culture bring our kids and neighbors together to learn and grow side-by-side.

Not only are these spaces loved by Columbus residents, our cultural gems attract families, couples, young professionals, and tourism to our city. Our vibrant arts scene is a critical piece to attract and retain the best and brightest in Columbus. Furthermore, the creative sector creates tens of thousands of good-paying jobs for Columbus residents, generating over three billion dollars in annual receipts.

Across our city, from Franklinton to the Near East Side, the arts brighten our lives.

That is why last year, I led the charge with my colleagues on Columbus City Council to double public funding for arts programming and access. These funds mean more grants to artists and improved access for families while protecting the existing infrastructure of arts and entertainment facilities.

The future is bright for the arts in Columbus. As I write this, my colleague Priscilla Tyson is working to bring Niccolò Paganini’s “Il Cannone” violin, considered to be the most famous violin in the world, to our city.

Columbus City Council is proud to support our arts community so that the next generation of Columbus artists have a chance to learn and grow.

Philanthropy Meets Technology

A

few years ago, I was sitting in my dorm room ordering GrubHub and looking at spring break flights and Airbnbs after Ubering home, thinking about how crazy it is that I can do all this with a tap of a button. Then it hit me. It was easier for me to coordinate a trip halfway across the world from my bed than to do something good in my own city.

Why? There was an app for almost everything, just not for volunteering, because nonprofit tech is stuck years behind other industries.

Without proper tools, nonprofit admins spend way too much valuable time on tasks that could be easily automated.

After surveying more than 40 nonprofits in Columbus, I learned that not only are the majority still recruiting volunteers through word of mouth and checking people in with a pen and paper system, the nonprofits that do use tech solutions are paying high costs for decade-old resources.

At POINT, we know that when nonprofits have reliable tech to find and manage volunteers, that frees them up to do what they do best - improve our communities.

Our POINT app connects people to local nonprofits, and since we know they need affordable management tools, we built a cloud-based software for them organize and analyze volunteers (without manual data entry or paperwork!).

The New Generation of Change Agents

S

ocial entrepreneurs are the new generation of change agents in Columbus because they combine social impact with strong business sense.

In 2015 we could count only 18 of them but now they number over 100. These are the entrepreneurs who last year created 253 new jobs for people who have been excluded from the mainstream economy.

In all they accounted for over 2,398 jobs, $49 million in payroll, and $73 million in sales. SocialVentures is the organization in Columbus that works every day to empower these mission-driven businesses.

Why? Because I believe they are the most significant force our city has to eliminate the social and economic divide that persists in Columbus.

SocialVentures recently co-hosted Philanthropitch from Austin, Texas to highlight to the public seven of these change agents. On August 6, 2019 SocialVentures’ annual community celebration, Positioned to Prosper, will highlight a dozen that have led the growth in this sector over the last five years. These leaders are transforming the lives of the formerly incarcerated, those recovering from substance abuse, survivors of human trafficking. They are bringing access to healthcare to the LBGTQ community and the minority population of King Lincoln. They are creating employment for veterans and the disabled. They are helping youth to thrive, the homeless to have homes, and the hungry to be fed.

Philanthropitch

How a first-ever, four-hour event raised more than $100,000 for seven local nonprofits

Seven local nonprofits earned a seat at the pitch table and were invited to present on stage at Jo Ann Davidson Theatre in downtown Columbus earlier this year to raise awareness and money—to the tune of $104,475—for special projects in their organizations not covered through traditional grant money. It was the first-ever Columbus Philanthropitch and it was a big success.

hilanthropitch is a high-energy, intense race for area nonprofits to compete for a donation.

In this inaugural competition, nonprofits ECDI, Equitas Health, Freedom a la Cart, Furniture Bank of Central Ohio, ModCon Living, ROX, and the YMCA were pushed to showcase their organizations in a unique way while building pitch-giving skills and awareness for their cause.

Founded in 2013 in Austin, Texas, Philanthropitch’s debut in Columbus was a bonafide success for the nonprofits and for the event’s numerous local sponsors.

“We were looking to connect the traditional nonprofit community with the startup community in Columbus,” says Wes Strickling, a member of the Charity Start-Up Competition Funding Committee of CITYPULSE COLUMBUS

Kiwanis, who put in several hours to make Philanthropitch a reality. “We thought this was an amazing opportunity to connect the two and fund some great nonprofits in a fun and innovative way.”

More than 400 attendees purchased tickets in support of Philanthropitch, which was presented by Kiwanis Club of Columbus and co-hosted by SocialVentures.

“Internally our club members were able to see a different way to make an impact by funding nonprofits in a pitch style event,” says Strickling of Kiwanis, an organization dedicated to serving youth and networking through leadership roles within the club. The club played a crucial role in bringing Philanthropitch to Columbus.

to show the community that a traditional nonprofit service organization can make an impact in a dynamic way.”

Nonprofits from around Central Ohio were invited to submit their proposals to Philantropitch last fall. From the more than 50 groups who answered the call, a group of judges narrowed it down to seven finalists – seven organizations that would have the opportunity to publicly present their concept and to vie for the more than $100,000 of available funds.

The seven nonprofits were

required to step onto the Philanthropitch stage to pitch their organization to a panel of judges and an audience of hundreds. They weren’t awarded a standard set of first, second, or third-place prizes. Instead, each judge donated their own money and decided how it should be distributed among the finalists.

The nonprofits also received cash awards from corporate donors (ranging from $5,000 $25,000) and audience awards via text message donations, as well as receiving top-notch pitch training and awareness

SocialVentures, an organization dedicated to empowering businesses to eliminate the social and economic divide in Central Ohio, was inspired by the opportunity to help smaller nonprofits in the Central Ohio region.

“We saw how Philanthropitch has been able to engage mediumsized businesses in Texas to channel their employee engagement budgets toward philanthropy,” says Allen Proctor, President & CEO of SocialVentures. “Columbus philanthropy is still largely led by the largest corporations and foundations, so a program that was successful in bringing medium-sized businesses into philanthropic support of social impact could be transformative in Columbus.”

Social Ventures also worked countless hours with Philanthropitch to make its Columbus opener a success.

The push started in 2017, when Proctor invited Dan Graham, head of Notley Ventures and co-founder of Philanthropitch, to be the keynote speaker at their 2017 Nonprofit Sustainability Showcase.

“Since then we have spent countless hours in meetings and conference calls with Philanthropitch staff to assist them in choosing venues, recruiting judges, reaching out to nonprofits, participating in the selection process, and coaching the finalists on their

pitches,” says Proctor.

Both Kiwanis and SocialVentures look forward to working with Philanthropitch again following the smashing success of the event.

“As we had hoped, Philanthropitch is a concept that attracted more people and more businesses to support social enterprise than has ever occurred in Central Ohio,” says Proctor.“ We look for future events to expand the pool of medium-sized businesses that see philanthropy and Philanthropitch as a meaningful way to engage their employees and their companies in the civic life and welfare of Columbus.”

ABOUT THE NONPROFIT FINALISTS ROX ROX is all about making the world better for girls by empowering them to make stronger choices for themselves. Their focus for girls is confidence and control of their own life.

This all happens through the work of training and licensing school professionals (counselors, social workers, and educators) to deliver a 20-week empowerment program to girls, conduct large national research, and provide professional development to share data for ROX and help adults in influential positions 38

to create powerful, confident young women.

“We love seeing our supporters share ROX in ways meaningful to them, whether that’s introducing my book, ‘Girls Without Limits: Helping Girls Achieve Healthy Relationships, Academic Success, and Interpersonal Strength’ to their book club, sharing ‘The Girls’ Index’ with their community leaders, workplace or affinity group, or by donating to ROX or attending a fundraiser event,” says Lisa Hinkelman, Founder and Executive Director of ROX. “The launch of The ROX Research & Training Institute will also offer an opportunity for parents, mentors, coaches and advocates to receive research-based education and tools that can support their relationships and work with girls and women.”

Through working with Philanthropitch, ROX has gained more attention to their program right here in Columbus, their original goal since the beginning. They’ve also obtained opportunities such as a place in the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation portfolio in 2017.

MODCON LIVING Modcon Living, formerly known as Rebuilding Together Central Ohio, is dedicated to providing affordable home care and home modification services while being a reliable service for valuable, aging homeowners. They believe that everyone deserves the choice to age in place with dignity and independence.

Since being established in 1991, Modcon has provided year-round emergency home repair and the Tool Library memberships (DIY home repairs) throughout Central Ohio.

Home repair assistance has been provided to nearly 1,800 homeowners, 24,500 volunteers have served more than 270,000 hours, and home repairs were valued at a total of $5.5 million since Modcon’s inception.

FREEDOM A LA CART Freedom a la Cart provides support to victims of human trafficking through job skill and self-sufficiency training that empowers them to overcome their hardships and start fresh through fresh food and drink

“We believe that true social change and empowerment happens when we invest in the workforce development, life skills training and job placement assistance needed to help survivors become personally and financially self-sufficient,” says Paula Haines, Executive Director of the program that provides catering and other food services to fund their initiatives.

Through their work with Philanthropitch, Freedom has secured new catering orders from people who support their work and over $18,000 from new corporate partners and donors.

“We’re continuing to pursue funding and investment opportunities introduced as the result of Philanthropitch,” Haines says.

FURNITURE BANK OF CENTRAL OHIO The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio helps families in need of furniture turn a house into a home. Receiving gently used furniture from over 7,000 donors, the Furniture Bank served over 3,400 families with 50,000 pieces of furniture in 2018.

“The best support we receive are donations of gently used furniture,” says Steve Votaw, President of Furniture Bank.

“We are in need of beds, dressers, kitchen tables, chairs, sofas, and appliances.”

Being one of the largest furniture banks in the country, and earning multiple awards for their program, the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio is helping families in need every day to build a stronger family unit, improve quality of life, and build a better community.

ECDI Supporting inclusive entrepreneurship to help foster a more generous and successful Ohio, ECDI has been helping low-income communities start their own small businesses for more than 15 years. 8 Great Public Art Projects to Love in Columbus

With everything from live demonstrations to awe-inspiring murals to grassroots street art movements, there is something here for everyone. Dream Together

Dream Together is a 96 ft wide, 21 ft tall mural for the Boys & Girls Club of Columbus in Franklinton. This inspiring piece was designed by Jeremy Jarvis in partnership with the Ohio Art League and the Harmony Project. In the spirit of transforming the community by creating together, the mural was completed over one week by more than 100 volunteers. This feat was accomplished using a projector and ladders to sketch an outline over two cold nights in April, 2014, followed by a “paint-by-numbers” approach using over 100 mixed colors during the next five days. While Jarvis – professionally trained at the Columbus College of Arts and Design – accepts a variety of contracts across the United States, he most enjoys murals that convey a message of optimism or provoke the viewer to think differently. A time-lapse video of this mural’s creation is featured on the Jarvis Art Studio website.

Dedication

Eric Grohe is a highly accomplished artist who has been working as a graphic designer and illustrator since 1961, specializing in archaeological and architectural projects in the U.S. and abroad. For his murals, he often uses Keim mineral paint from Germany on account of its longevity and ability to be appreciated by future generations. Dedication is a 58 ft wide, 50 ft tall mural that gives a three-dimensional appearance to one face of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing, located on the campus of Mount Carmel CLOCKWISE FROM West. Eight Great Public Art Projects to Love in Columbus // going strong since its start in 2015 under the vision and leadership of multiple co-founders, including Josh Miller and Justin Withrow. Motivated by a desire to share elements of hip-hop culture with others, Miller got the idea to begin the festival after throwing art and music events near Ohio State’s campus. He stresses the importance of balancing MC, DJ, Bboy / Bgirl (breakdancing) elements along with graffiti writing, the public art aspect of the event. Withrow, owner of the Lookout Supply, works with local property and business owners to paint their buildings multiple times a year, and has helped the live graffiti demonstration grow from a handful of artists to a group of more than 20 people painting throughout the day. The 5th annual 2x2 Hip-Hop Festival will be held on Saturday, July 27th at 3440 W. Broad St.

Spring on Spring Street

This vibrant downtown mural brings color and warmth to an urban district lined with older, otherwise unremarkable architecture, reminding us that “It’s Always Spring on Spring Street.” Sponsored by Columbus Inspires, Columbus Young Professionals, and the Germain Family, the project was created by local artists and designers Carrie Phillips, Julie Martin, and Suzy Bureau. The mural brought the building at 225 E. Spring Street to life upon its installation between August and October 2018. Martin, who has lived in Columbus since 2013, expresses her hope that the painting will be a light to the people who normally rush past on their commute, and her vision that the project will expand and inspire other artists to create similar works all the way up and down Spring Street.

Richard Pryor Mural

Terry Norman grew up in Columbus listening to actor / comedian Richard Pryor. Norman was awarded a children’s scholarship to attend Saturday classes at the Columbus College of Art and Design, teaching himself other techniques on the side, but he didn’t fully invest in his passion for drawing until 2014. He then discovered his preferred medium of charcoal sketches, which, he says, allow for more intense detail and deeper value. In August, 2018, Norman was selected by the Marcia Evans Gallery in the Short North to adapt his drawing of Richard Pryor into this mural as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Harlem Renaissance. “Just capturing the essence of an individual’s spirit in a portrait is so rewarding for me,” he writes. “People’s reaction to my art work is my inspiration and gratification.” More of Norman’s work can be found on his Instagram, @ tnorm10.

Kinney is currently working on a sister piece called the #cbuslovecart, which he describes as “a ride-behind shopping cart / sound system / LED lightship mashup,” to be unveiled in the spring to inspire mobile dance parties all over Columbus this summer.

Premiering in September of 2015, this ambitious street art project was orchestrated by Columbus artist Stephanie Rond and collaborator Catherine Bell Smith. It is the physical embodiment of the Greater Columbus Art Council’s “Art Makes Columbus / Columbus Makes Art” initiative.

Professional artists designed 64 wood tiles to serve as an inspiration for some 700 amateur artists who made their own tiles at the Columbus Arts Festival that year, approximately 300 of which were chosen to be displayed for four weeks. The tiles were installed in groups of five – with each group including one professional and four amateur tiles – on street signs spread out across Columbus to spell out the word “ART” from one end of the city to the other when pinned on a Google map. New tiles were painted and displayed at the same locations after the Columbus Arts Festival in 2017.

Gravity Project Mural

Gravity, an elaborate community project by Kaufman Development in the Franklinton area, is home to this mural painted by Adam Hernandez.

Hernandez’s creations portray stories of a mythical world he has named the Land of the Thunderbirds.

“Stylistically,” he says, “I strive to blend my influences from graffiti as well as ancient hieroglyphic art to tell one cohesive narrative ... Through this imagery, I hope to convey messages of independence, personal growth, and transformation.” This mural, which depicts a kind of gate or portal, uses a bright geometric pattern inspired by the Ndebele people of South Africa combined with layered, graffiti-style text that reflects the values and lifestyle of the Gravity community.

Hernandez will be putting on an art show in September at Blockfort called “Rival Lands” in collaboration with Brian Gonnella, a Pittsburgh-based artist who also creates highly in-depth worlds in his work.

In 2011, co-founders Christina Vera-Reid (left) and Maylin Sambois-Sanchez started with a mustard seed of an idea: they wanted to create a simplified process for sharing community resources to women. Vera-Reid and Sambois-Sanchez wanted to foster opportunities for women to connect, while at the same time, create an additional layer of daily support. It was during those meet-ups that the two friends identified many similarities amongst participants, who openly shared much about their childhood struggles, regrets and current challenges they were facing with their daughters. Often, the consensus was, “We all wished we would have had more support and enrichment-based opportunities and access as girls.” It was passion and faith that led the ladies to officially launch Femergy (a portmanteau of Female and Energy) in 2014. Since Femergy’s inception they have gone on to create exploratory programs and events that serve girls and women in the state of Ohio and surrounding areas.

“My mother implanted in me at a very young age a strong sense of purpose and the importance of education. She helped so many people during her life without a need or desire to be thanked – my mother did this because it was the right thing to do.”

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, it doesn’t just impact that child. The whole family – parents, brothers, sisters – is affected and needs support in healing, moving forward and the chance to share some light-hearted and happy moments during an otherwise stressful and tumultuous time. That’s where A Kid Again steps in to provide “ongoing recreational therapeutic relief,” not only for the child facing a life-threatening illness, but for the entire family. In a group setting, A Kid Again provides adventures and experiences where families come together and have fun, allowing everyone to truly feel like they are a kid again.

“Whether this is from me, my organization or someone else that I know through work or volunteering, I find myself constantly thinking; there has to be a way to fix this, there has to be a better way.”

Columbus Early Learning Centers (CELC) welcomed their very first students in January of 1887 as a one room nursery serving low income families at the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union at 65 South Fourth Street. “A day nursery allowed mothers to work and older siblings to attend school, while their children and younger siblings spent the day in a safe and stable environment,” shares Gina Ginn, CEO of CELC. “At the end of the first year, the daily average at our nursery was five children and tuition was a mere five cents per day.”

LC Johnson

Founder, Zora’s House

When LC Johnson was a college student, two of her favorite spots were the Women’s Center and the Black Culture Center.

As a woman of color attending a predominantly white university, she knew that “stepping foot into either of these two spaces meant the ability to connect with like-minded individuals.”

Johnson felt comfort in the fact that she would find herself in the company of mentors and friends who looked like her, with access to resources that “spoke directly to [her] particular identity and experiences.” She was able to count on these places while in college, but after graduating, she says she, “quickly realized that spaces like these were not the norm out in the ‘real world.’”

Enter, Zora’s House. Zora’s House is a community and creative space created by and for women of color. Their mission is to provide women of color with the clarity, confidence, and connections they need to amplify their authentic voices; grow and contribute their talents; and powerfully transform their lives, careers, and communities. Fittingly referred to by one member as a “sanctuary,” Zora’s House is a safe space where “women can bring all of their messy, vulnerable, authentic truths AND be rooting in their identity as black and brown and Indigenous women.” To find a space like Zora’s House is “so much more rare than most people know,” says Johnson. “I created this space because I needed it for myself and couldn’t find it.”

“Sometimes people will mention an off-hand comment or idea to me and if I can’t get it out of my head, I know it’s something worth exploring further.”

David Brown Creative Director, Harmony Project

Harmony Project was started in 2009 to unite diverse people throughout the community with something they all have in common: a love for singing. “Full-throated, powerhouse musical performances” for massive audiences are the outcome. Some may find this surprising, especially considering there are no auditions and no previous professional singing experience required. While auditions aren’t required; participants must earn their place on the stage by serving their community. Volunteers give back in various ways, doing everything from serving meals to planting trees to installing public art projects.

“When our voices unite, the weaker are lifted by the stronger: it’s the sound of a city if we all began to sing together.”

“Harmony exists at the intersection of artistic passion and social purpose,” shares Creative Director, David Brown. “Harmony Project reaches all ages, across all social and cultural divides, and serves the greater Columbus population by providing accessible arts/education programs in schools, transitional housing facilities, theatres, and even a prison.”

In 1988, two Harvard Law School students and roommates, Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, founded City Year on the notion that “one person can make a difference.” Specifically, they placed a focus on young people as a “powerful resource for addressing America’s most pressing issues.” Fast forward to 1994, and City Year Columbus made its debut as one of the first five City Year locations. Presently, City Year spans 29 cities in the United States, as well as two international locations in the U.K. and South Africa. “At City Year, we believe that every child can be successful through the power of education,” says City Year Columbus Executive Director, Tanya Booker Fowler. City Year Columbus “partners with public school systems to keep students in school and on track to graduate from high school ready for college and career success.” The impact: service to 234,000 students in 349 schools at 29 sites, including seven Columbus City Schools.

Paula Haines Executive Director, Freedom a la Cart

Founded as a single food cart to bring hope to survivors of human trafficking, Freedom a la Cart is an “innovative, nonprofit business born to empower survivors of human sex trafficking,” shares executive director Paula Haines. Now a thriving catering company, Freedom a la Cart has grown to provide job training to survivors. “We believe that women who have lived in slavery should be empowered to gain freedom through personal and economic independence,” says Haines. “Through offering supportive services, practical life skills, paid workforce training and one-on-one case management, Freedom is a place where survivors can heal, learn and grow as they prepare to live independently in the community.”

“We launched our social enterprise seven years ago with a small food cart purchased on ebay for $1200.

Since then, we’ve employed more than 90 survivors.”

Per Scholas was founded more than 20 years ago and has been fostering “positive and proven social change in communities across the country,” says managing director Toni Cunningham. The impact: Per Scholas has helped more than 9,000 individuals across eight U.S. cities to date. The Columbus Per Scholas site opened in 2012 and has already graduated more than 425 community members.

Executive Director, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra Currently in their 40th season and led by music director David Danzmayr, and their creative partner, violinist Vadim Gluzman, ProMusica is a chamber orchestra comprised of 37 musicians who come from Columbus and all over the country. Scott Woods Founder & Director, Streetlight Guild

In 2017, Scott Woods put together a series of events called Holler: 31 Days of Black Columbus Art, where different art-based shows were put on every day for a month. “Thousands of people attended, a hundred artists were utilized, and almost a dozen venues and institutions participated,” according to Woods, who is now the founder & director of Streetlight Guild. “Seeing how powerful the response was inspired me to figure out how to bring that level of quality art and culture to the city on a regular basis, and Streetlight Guild was the answer.” Streetlight Guild has a goal of generating, curating and preserving “Columbus-based art and culture in a variety of disciplines with a focus on local, original work from underrepresented voices.”

Shadowbox Live was founded in 1988 by Stev Guyer and his then partner Rebecca Gentile after Stev had written a rock opera called, Dawn of Infinite Dreams. “Truth be told, the first effort was very flawed, but that laid the groundwork for company to continue creating/revising original work and pushing the artistic boundaries,” shares executive director, Stacie Boord. Today, Shadowbox Live is the largest full-time resident ensemble theatre company in the country. Annually, Shadowbox Live produces 19 different original works of more than 400 performances. “We use the power of live performance to share our artistic expressions within our community through engaged educational programming, enhanced corporate partnerships and inspired civic givebacks.”

Dr. Melissa Crum

Diversity & Equity Practitioner / Founder, Mosaic Education Network Dr. Melissa Crum, artist, author and researcher, was working with African-American parents, helping them use community resources and the arts to homeschool their children when she began to wonder why they chose to homeschool. She began interviewing African-Americans across the country who were homeschooling their children to find out what drove them to make that choice. What she found was a common thread woven throughout. No matter what level income or region these families were from: “Parents had a negative interaction with teachers when they were students or their children had negative experiences with teachers.” So impactful were these experiences, that it drove these families away from traditional school systems.

“I began to wonder how I could support diverse parents and students in having a productive and healthy educational experience,” said Dr. Crum, who went on to found Mosaic Education Network. She, along with her team of experts, work with “principals, superintendents, executive directors, and thoughtful leaders who are ready to figure out how to make substantive change.” Mosaic Education Network also works with schools,

Founder and Program Director / Visual Artist, The Artmobile As the former senior vice president for marketing at United Way of Central Ohio, Tobi Furman was “acutely aware of the increasing poverty and disparities that many students in our community face, academically and culturally.” Tobi started The Artmobile in 2016 and saw an “opportunity to combine my love for the arts with my desire to improve the quality of life for underserved children.” In the summer of 2017, The Artmobile Program launched in Hilltop and Franklinton as an “affordable and innovative way to deliver high quality, arts inspired learning experiences to at-risk children ages 5-14 living in underserved neighborhoods where access and exposure to the arts and art education is very limited,” shares founder & program director, Tobi Furman. Arts professionals staff, something Furman says is vital to the quality of the artistic experience for the young people they serve.

Since its inception, The Artmobile has served more than 1,800 students through its summer learning and after school programming. “The Artmobile team believes that all young people should have the opportunity to benefit from the creativity, fun and self-confidence that comes from a well-structured mobile arts and art education program, particularly in struggling neighborhoods where access and exposure to the arts and art education is very limited.” Benefits from exposure to the arts at a young age include: better academic performance, higher attendance rates, greater likelihood of taking leadership roles and pursuing higher education.

Doug Ulman President & CEO, Pelotonia

The Pelotonia community is making an amazing impact in Columbus and around the world, and Doug Ulman is leading the charge as President/CEO. Pelotonia started in 2009 as a 3-day cycling event in Columbus, with the goal of raising money to fund cancer research at The Ohio State University. “Over the last decade, the ride has grown into a movement based on the shared belief that when we work together, we go further,” said Ulman, “and when we push ourselves, individually and as a community, we can achieve great things.”

Since inception, the Pelotonia community has raised more than $184 million to support innovative, life-saving cancer research.

Through their collective efforts, Pelotonia has brought together hundreds of thousands of people to ride, fundraise, volunteer, and donate, and is helping to create a significant impact in the fight against cancer, in a big way. “The Pelotonia community has accomplished more than we ever imagined and raised more than we ever dared think possible,” says Ulman. “And we’ve only just begun.”

As the city continues to grow, Columbus’ arts community only gets better. We wanted to put a spotlight on the city’s live theatre scene, and to explore the history of some of our favorite venues. Whether you’re looking for laughs, drama, or something for the kids, here are ten places to get your theatre fix in the capital city.

OHIO THEATRE CAPA, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, manages several local theaters and is known for hosting dozens of original and Broadway shows across the city. The organization was originally founded as an effort to rescue the historic Ohio Theatre, a 1928 milliondollar movie palace that was demolished in 1969. With fundraising efforts, CAPA was able to restore the space, staying true to the original Spanish Boroque design with intricate carvings, red velvet seats and curtains, opulent, gilded ceilings, and a giant chandelier. Since

its revitalization, the Ohio Theatre has become home to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and BalletMet, and hosts over 100 yearly CAPA shows and Broadway plays like Wicked, The Lion King, Hello! Dolly, and many more.

PALACE THEATRE Situated at the base of the LeVeque Tower downtown, the Palace Theatre is another CAPA-owned venue that is a staple for live entertainment.

Opened in 1926 as a vaudeville house, the space was designed with particularly excellent acoustics to accommodate performers who had to be heard without electronic amplification.

The theatre is also quite visually lush, designed with inspiration from France’s Palace of Versailles. It boasts a grand staircase, fountains and chandeliers, 2,827 seats, and elegantly-carved ceilings, all truly chateau-worthy. The theatre hosts CAPA plays and concerts, Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Arts Group specials, and Broadway shows.

Today, the 150-seat Garden Theater hosts shows from the Short North Stage and visiting troupes, Broadway classics like Dreamgirls, Hair, and Hedwig and the Angy Inch, and other events like puppet shows, readings, and concerts. It also features an adjacent small-capacity Green Room stage for intimate cabaret and comedy shows, and Ethel’s Lounge, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar.

ACTORS’ THEATRE OF COLUMBUS AT SCHILLER PARK Although fall marks the end of the season for the Actors’ Theatre of Columbus, the group still makes our list for their not-to-miss outdoor shows popular during the warmer months. Since 1982, the group has spent their summers performing tales from Shakespeare and other literature classics on the Amphitheatre Stage at Schiller Park in German Village.

LINCOLN THEATRE Nestled in the heart of the King-Lincoln District on the east side of Columbus is the Lincoln Theatre, a beloved gem to the neighborhood since 1928 and entry on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally known as the Ogden Theatre and Ballroom, the location was a hotspot for movies and live

jazz amongst the area’s affluent African American community in the 1930s & 40s. In ‘60s and ‘70s, heavy highway construction displaced over 10,000 people in the area, leading to the theatre’s closing of three decades, until Mayor Michael B. Coleman began revitalization of King-Lincoln in 2002. CAPA has since taken management over the Lincoln, investing $13 million in renovations to the 566seat Egyptian Revival-style space. The venue now hosts readings, concerts, and plays with CAPA, the Lincoln Theatre Association, and other resident and visiting groups and artists.

1893, it was established as the Great Southern Fireproof Hotel and Opera House, one of the first facilities in Columbus to use electricity. The location hosted touring theatrical productions until it was sold and renovated into a full-time movie house by the 1930s, and was later closed, re-bought, and gifted to CAPA by the ‘80s.

After a fundraising drive, CAPA spent 14 months restoring the theatre, which now boasts 925 seats, giant blue stage curtains, and stunning golden arched ceilings. It hosts various CAPA concerts and shows and is home to the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, and Chamber Music Columbus.

One unique platform that’s part of The Giving Store, is the crowdfunding platform Better Together, which highlights nonprofit organizations who are raising money for a unique project or need outside of their regular mission that is funded through standard charity giving. For example, the Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services is currently raising funds to help skilled immigrants earn certificates and licenses, Central Community House raised $6,195 to provide monthly

community dinners in 2019, Sunrise Animal Sanctuary raised $2,560 to provide shade for farm animals, and much, much more.
