>>> TRAINING WITH A GUARANTEED JOB INTERVIEW With ambitious construction and transport projects across the region, the growth in the electric and hybrid vehicle market, and demands on health and social care services, there is a constant need for staff to work in these priority sectors. To support employers who are looking to recruit staff the college offers a range of free sector-based work academy programmes (SWAPs) to enable local people to develop the skills and knowledge needed to work in theses specific areas. Each programme offers sectorspecific pre-employment skills training and development, a work experience placement and a guaranteed interview with an employer with vacancies on successful completion of the course. SWAPS are funded by West Midlands Combined Authority and are available in construction groundworks and plant, electric and hybrid vehicle awareness, health and social care, laying and maintenance of rail track, and West Midlands Metro, with new programmes in hospitality, and manufacturing and welding coming soon. After trying for a few years to get a job in the care sector, 31-year-old Claire Smith has finally got her dream job after doing a preparation for work course at the college. Claire, who previously worked as a bar manager, was told about the college’s health and social care sector-based work academy programme (SWAP) – which enables participants to develop the skills needed to work in the sector and guarantees an interview with an employer at the end of the programme – by her Jobcentre adviser. After completing the course, Claire was offered a job as a carer at Handle with Care (Black Country) Ltd and won the Best Carer award at the recent Black Country Excellence in Care Awards. Claire said:

It was a great course and I learnt a lot. I’ve wanted to work in the care sector for many years and when I was offered the job as a carer I felt like I’d finally achieved what I really want to do. If you want to work in care I’d really recommend doing the SWAPs course as a way of getting into the sector.

CITY LEARNING QUARTER

Work on the new City Learning Quarter city centre site is set to get underway around the end of the year following the appointment of the main contractor by City of Wolverhampton Council. The £61 million scheme, which will establish transformational facilities for the college, Adult Education and Central Library, is set to be completed for the start of the 2025/26 academic year and will enable the relocation of facilities and courses from the Paget Road campus and improve skills and employment outcomes for people across the city and wider region. Work to erect the steelwork for the new Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre is underway and once installed the ground and first floor slabs will be poured, blockwork for external walls laid, the building will be clad and the roof added to make it watertight. The centre - designed for automotive and engineering studies with facilities for new electric, hybrid and traditional vehicles, as well as fabrication, manufacturing CAD and robotics - is due to be completed in July 2024 and will welcome students from the start of the 2024/2025 academic year. Pete Merry, deputy chief executive at the college, said: “The installation of the steel framework is a major step forward in the construction of our Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre and the relocation of our automotive and engineering workshops from the Paget Road campus in Compton.
