We can help you study the subjects that interest you and the combination that best suits your plans for your future career. You’ll also have access to wvSixth – our own sixth form centre which is solely for our A Level students and is full of computers and places to relax. Achievement rates are high, and many of our students go on to university or into employment.

#DoMore WITH FINANCIAL SUPPORT Age 16-18? All our courses for 16-18-year-olds are fully funded meaning they are FREE! You may also qualify for a travel pass, (based on a household income of £25,000 or less per year), lunch card for free college meals, printing credit and support with educational visits and equipment, (based on a household income of £20,000 or less per year). Age 19-23 and studying for your first level 3 or below? Financial support may be available if your individual income is £25,000 per year or below and the course is eligible for funding. Age 19+ and studying at level 3 or above? You could be eligible for a student loan to help you access the financial support you might need to study for a qualification. You do not have to start paying back the loan until you are also earning over £25,725 a year, with payment not being taken until the April following your course end date.

FAQ What are the minimum entry requirements? Whilst successful candidates may have a wide range of different GCSE grades, the college minimum entry requirement is for at least 5 GCSE subjects at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including maths and English. You will also need to meet any minimum entry requirements that in some cases apply to individual subjects (these requirements will be discussed at interview and are available on our website). Qualifications such as BTECs will be considered when deciding whether an offer will be made, however they do not form part of the minimum entry requirements.

What is the interview like? All interviews are conducted in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Interview questions are structured to enable our staff to learn more about your strengths and ambitions, whilst also ensuring your subject choices support your long-term ambitions. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn more about college life.
How many A Levels can I take? Most students taking A Levels choose three subjects and will commit to these courses for the full two years. This is because all A Levels are now twoyear linear courses. Our most able and ambitious students (usually with at least five grade 7s at GCSE) may wish to study four subjects at A Level. These students must commit to four subjects for the full two years.

How can I find out which combination of subjects will best support my future aims and aspirations? • If you have a certain career or degree in mind, do some research online to find out which subjects provide the best foundation for this – or you can talk to our extremely knowledgeable staff at an open event. • If you are uncertain, you can keep your options open by selecting A Levels which are highly regarded for their academic rigour and the transferable skills they help you develop. • If you are considering a Russell Group university, you should read the ‘pathways’ advice offered by this group of top universities.

ART This A Level will prepare you for your future as one of the next generation of artists and designers. This course offers you the opportunity to explore a wide range of practical media, technical methods and a variety of theoretical ideas that are central to art and design in its contemporary context. It provides an intensive and realistic experience in a range of specialist areas and is organised in such a way that you are encouraged to build upon your previous experience while developing new skills, knowledge and understanding of your personal practice. This course will give you experience as you may have the opportunity to study

different art and design disciplines including 3D design, visual studies, textiles, illustration, photography, print making and graphic design. Each term you will work on a number of assignments and exhibit your practical work around the college with an end of year final exhibition in the city centre. You will take part in practical workshops, lectures, debates, gallery visits and independent research. You will learn new skills and develop experience in a number of specialist techniques and approaches from an experienced and dedicated tutor, together with a range of guest speakers. BIOLOGY Biology happens all around us and governs who we are. As you understand it more, you can appreciate how much every bit of our lives depends on our understanding of this. By taking biology you develop some very useful skills that can be applied well outside of the subject discipline; these include problem solving, numeracy and practical skills as well as developing a broad scientific background. A Level Business is an inter-disciplinary subject that brings together the study of marketing, finance, human resource management and operations. DANCE If you want a career in the world of dance - either as a performer, choreographer or critic – this A Level will give you theoretical and practical experience and enable you to develop dance appreciation skills though the analysis of professional work, as well as gain an understanding of the historical and cultural context of dance, dancers’ physiology and the rehearsal and performance process. DRAMA & THEATRE STUDIES Whether you want to be a performer, designer, director – or a combination of all three – this course will ignite and engage your creativity, passion and interests and expand your theatrical skills as you learn through experiencing, creating and analysing theatre. You will explore drama as a practical art form, analyse texts, work independently to create your own drama performance and apply your knowledge of the process of creating and developing drama and theatre to your own work.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE Are you interested in the way English language works? Are you curious to find out how and why new words are formed? Did you know that the origins of many of the words we use today such as coffee, chocolate and potatoes come from South America? Are you keen to learn more about the way toddlers acquire language and learn to develop their vocabulary? Why is ‘m’ the first sound babies utter – and no, it is not because they spend most of their time with mum! In our study of English Language we explore peoples’ attitudes to accent and dialect, gender roles and ethnicity. You will explore how language is used to
represent celebrities or social groups in the media – essential knowledge if you are not to believe all you read in the press! During this course you will study: seeing through language, the language of representation, language explorations-language variation and change-language discourses, language interventions and investigations. The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in marketing, journalism, speech therapy, primary and early years teaching, secondary education and lecturing.

ENGLISH LITERATURE Do you love the arts and have a passion for reading? Then this is the right course for you! A Level English Literature from its study of Shakespeare plays to the modern novel - explores all aspects of the human condition.
It is an exciting subject that encourages you to explore stories and narratives from different eras. It is a wellrespected subject and welcomed by all universities and employers in all career paths.
The historical context in which the texts are set often influence the characters’ responses to love, politics, nature and the world in general. Did you know that English literature explores, from its earliest form, the psychology of the mind and provides an insight into the societies from the time they were written?
During this course you will study: literary genres (aspects of tragedy or comedy), texts and genres (aspects of crime or political writing) and theory and independence.
While you are on this course you will have the opportunity to visit National Theatres, The Globe, The Tower of London and A Level student conferences. We also have guest speakers who we invite in to college to enhance your learning. These have included the world expert on English language David Crystal and visiting authors and actors.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE If you are passionate about the sustainability of our planet and what we can do to protect it for future generations, the A Level in Environmental Science will enable you to study the living and physical environment and work scientifically to develop an understanding of how different events and cycles within the environment interrelate. Environmental science is a holistic subject with many interconnected systems and processes where a change in one process many affect many others and you will learn how this can influence subsequent environmental events, the human impact on these events and

HISTORY Are you passionate about discovering how the world today has developed? Are you interested in analysing events from the past and hoping to improve the future? Then this is the right course for you! A Level History brings together the study of history, culture, politics, economics, sociology and psychology. It is an exciting subject that encourages you to question events of the past and to draw your own conclusions. As part of your course you will learn about how Lenin came to power in Russia, how Russia became the dominant force with which we are familiar today, the birth of the teenager in modern Britain and
whether the swinging sixties really deserve that title. History is a well-respected subject and welcomed by all universities, while the skills you learn are highly valued by employers in all career paths. During this course you will study: Tsarist and Communist Russia 1855-1964, the making of modern Britain 1951-2007 and complete an historical investigation. Some of our past students have progressed on to study history at Queen Mary’s London, history and politics at Cardiff University, philosophy at the University of Warwick and history at the University of Wolverhampton.

LAW If you are interested in discovering how the law works, this A Level will develop your knowledge and understanding of the English legal system. You will learn about different areas of law, including criminal law, human rights, contract law and tort law, as well as society from a legal perspective, the rights and responsibilities of individuals and how law connects with business, economics, history, politics and technology. You will develop analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills through the application of legal rules, and an understanding of legal methods and reasoning. You will learn how to analyse scenarios by

identifying key facts, construct clear, concise and logical legal arguments using appropriate terminology and referencing legal rules, and critically evaluate legal issues by identifying different perspectives and viewpoints. You will also further develop your academic, communication and team working skills and the course will prepare you for progression to a higher education qualification or university degree and a future career in the legal profession.

MATHS Are you passionate about exploring mathematical ideas and methods, including calculus and trigonometry, and understanding how to construct logical arguments? Are you interested in learning more about the power and wonder of algebra? Then this course is right for you! Maths can be used to model and simplify many aspects of the situations we encounter in everyday life, from the distribution of heights in the population to the mechanics of the operation of a lift. Maths is an A Level entry requirement at university for all sorts of subjects,
while the skills you will learn will make you more desirable for almost any job! In fact, careers in finance, computing, engineering, and business are all crying out for people with maths qualifications, while studies have shown that people with a maths A Level tend to earn more on average than people without it. During this course you will study compulsory units of core (pure) maths, decision maths and statistics. The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in pure and applied sciences, engineering, computing, economics, business, actuarial work or social sciences.

PHYSICS Physics is arguably the most exciting part of all science and technology. It looks all the way from the inside of atoms out to the whole universe and in between. It covers such things as mechanics, optics, waves, materials, particle physics, fields, electricity, radioactivity and energy. An understanding of the concepts in physics leads some way to understanding nature itself. It is the glue that holds the other sciences together. Physics is playing an important part in the development of telecommunications, medical diagnosis, space exploration, manufacturing and countless other applications, both in industry and the home.

During this course you will study: measurements and their errors, particles and radiation, waves, mechanics and materials, electricity, further mechanics and thermal physics, fields and their consequences and nuclear physics. The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in research and development, scientific laboratory work, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Some of our past students have progressed on to study physics at Imperial College, London, and Birmingham University, optometry at Cardiff University, engineering at
UCL, electrical engineering at Aston University, medicine at Keele University and veterinary science at the University of Middlesex.

POLITICS A Level Politics is an inter-disciplinary subject that brings together the study of history, economics, sociology and psychology and covers UK politics and the UK government, and how these compare to the political system in the USA. You will learn how the government in Britain works and the role of the prime minister and the cabinet, as well as gain an understanding of political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media. You will investigate the advantages and disadvantages of ‘first past the post’ and proportional representation, look at the impact of the Human Rights Act and European Court of Human Rights
on the British political system, examine the differences between capitalism, communism and fascism, and gain an understanding of how it is possible for extremist governments to be voted into power. PSYCHOLOGY The study of the mind and how people and animals behave is an exciting and ever advancing science. This A Level will teach you about how people interact, how memory works, the influence of the unconscious mind and the relationship between biological processes and psychological functions. It is an ideal complement to anyone studying a physical science, and will prepare you for a wide range of careers.

During this course you will study: social psychology, cognitive psychology, biological psychology, learning theories, clinical psychology, criminal psychology and child psychology. The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in teaching, human resources, police force, counseling, probation services, social work, marketing and nursing.

SOCIOLOGY Studying sociology offers insights into social and cultural issues. It helps you develop a multi-perspective and critical approach to understanding issues around culture, identity, religion, crime, childhood and social power. More than once during the course you’re bound to ask yourself the question, “why have we developed like this. Poverty, ignorance, crime, injustice... shouldn’t we have left them in the Stone Age?” Over a two year period you’ll cover a spectrum of topics including: education, families and households, crime and deviance, and beliefs in society, which, between them, will help you make sense of the society we
live in and understand the culture and identity issues which affect us all. The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in social work, psychology, nursing or medicine. The subject is also useful in a number of other careers, like marketing, advertising, PR, journalism, law, teaching and the caring services. While you are on this course you will have the opportunity to visit the UCAS conference in Manchester or Liverpool, the University of Wolverhampton and the ‘Behind Bars’ conference – a conference with ex-convicts.

ACCESS TO A LEVELS Are you interested in studying A Levels but haven’t met the entry criteria? Then this is the right course for you! Access to A Levels will give you the opportunity to study a range of GCSEs including English and maths, with the intention of progressing onto the college’s A Level programme. The Access to A Levels programme intends to open doors to further and higher education while allowing you to study a range of subjects and develop a broad skills base. We are the only college in the West Midlands that offers a programme like this! During the course you will study: • GCSE English • GCSE maths • Science GCSEs (including biology, chemistry, physics and psychology)
