2017 Parks & Recreation Department Services Guide
message
from the
department
Our Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to present the 2017 Annual Play Plan. It is our goal to provide the citizens of Winter Park with the best in parks and recreational programming. As part of our effort to furnish an excellent variety and selection of recreational opportunities, our department has met and exceeded the requirements of the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The city’s Parks & Recreation Department is one of only 145 other departments nationwide that can claim the highest level of performance recognized in the professional field of parks and recreation. We invite you to read our Annual Play Plan, visit our facilities, and experience our commitment to a healthy and active lifestyle that is available in Winter Park. ~ Your Parks & Recreation Team
do you know
about this park? As Winter Park’s crown jewel, Central Park is the centerpiece to not only our department but to the entire city. This beautiful gathering space is where you can find a quiet place to read, a family having a picnic with their children, an evening movie, an internationally-renowned art show and so much more. It was deeded to the city on April 6, 1906, by Charles Hosmer Morse. The plaque (shown right) is found in the south portion of the park, and was donated by the Friends of Central Park on November 20, 1986, honoring the life and generosity of Mr. Morse. The plaque reads: “Charles Hosmer Morse was born in 1833 in St. Johnsbury Center, Vermont. From 1883 until his death in 1921, he considered Winter Park his second home. His vision and generosity are responsible for much of its beauty today. The park which surrounds you is one of his benefactions. Charles Hosmer Morse was one of the pioneers who gave this community the character which brought so much happiness to so many. Dedicated by Friends of Central Park, November 20, 1986.”
Be sure to visit the park, have a seat on a bench, and absorb the amazing character of our city. Just look and listen, and you will soon see how this park is indeed our crown jewel!

parks, parks The Parks & Recreation Department is proud to maintain 346 acres of park property. Central Park Our “flagship” park, Central Park is located right in the heart of the city and the location of most of our large events such as the art festivals. On a daily basis, this park is just perfect for a noon-time lunch break, a walk with a friend, or just a place to sit and people watch. And don’t miss the amazing Rose Garden!
Shady Park Located at the corner of New England and Pennsylvania avenues, Shady Park features a reservable picnic pavilion and our amazing spray ground. It will sure cool you off on a hot summer day!
Dinky Dock Park Our main lake-front park, Dinky Dock, has boat access to the Winter Park Chain of Lakes. Park patrons love to use this park for paddle boarding, kayaking and other water sports.
Lake Baldwin Park This park has a diverse offering of amenities. There is a ramp for boats without combustible engines, a playground, and connectivity to a 3-mile exercise path. And don’t forget the offleash dog area ~ voted one of the most popular dog parks in the nation! Dogs of every shape and size visit the lake-front park daily with their owners. Don’t miss this special place ~ it is just too dog-gone fun!

Ward Park
Featuring three multipurpose sports fields, a stocked fishing lake, great playground, one half-mile walking path and an outdoor fitness experience, this 28-acre park is very popular. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is located at the corner of Denning Drive and Morse Boulevard. Be sure to visit and walk the path as you will see a number of water birds in the lake!
The George Morgan Ward Memorial Park, more commonly known as Ward Park, is extremely active. Nearly every sport including soccer, lacrosse, football, basketball, tennis and track, has a place in this 66-acre property. The newly reconfigured, computer-controlled lighted fields maintain regulation sizing for most sports which has enabled even more teams to schedule games and practices.
mini park
Over 346 acres of parks properties are maintained by our department. An additional 56 acres of properties such as medians, rights of way, city building grounds and parking lots are also the responsibility of the Parks Maintenance Division.
Golfview Park Located off Webster, just East of Park Avenue, this unique mini park is the centerpiece to a beautiful enclave of homes. It was platted in 1921 with the neighborhood and has served as the gathering place for neighbors ever since. It features a fountain that was designed, built and installed by Howard G. Lindsay, the same fountain designer who donated the Veterans Memorial Fountain in Central Park.

winter park golf course The Winter Park Golf Course re-opened to rave reviews on October 1, 2016, after a $1.2 million renovation project. Built in 1914, the historic course closed its doors on March 1, 2016, to undergo some much needed repairs. New fairways, rough and greens, combined with a state of the art irrigation system, and a redesign by Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns of Integrative Golf, brought this second oldest course in Orlando back to its glory days and turned it into a gem in central Florida. So much so that The Golf ChannelÂŽ and Golf Advisor, named it the 5th Best Short Course in the entire country. The course itself is unique in many ways. It is a nine-hole walking course topping out at around 2,500 yards from the tips. Although there are a few electric carts available for senior and
disabled players, most prefer to take a pull cart and stroll the fairways while enjoying the surroundings. It is the true definition of urban golf as road traffic and the occasional train are very common sights during your round but seem to blend seamlessly with the majestic oaks, two churches and cemetery that also envelop the property. You will actually cross the street five times during your nine hole trek. The pro shop has a wide variety of merchandise to choose from as well as plenty of snacks and beverages for you to enjoy during or after your round. The course is open every day except Christmas day and starting times can be made up to three days in advance for the general public. Members can make starting times up to seven days in advance. Rates range from $12 to $19 per round, annual memberships start at $900 and the course is available to rent for private events including Night Golf.

fitness trails Lake Baldwin Park
Fishing is allowed (with a freshwater fishing license) and very popular in most city parks. Lake Mendsen, in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at Denning Drive and Morse Boulevard is a great fishing spot. It is stocked by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission primarily with channel catfish. Largemouth Bass, bluegill, sunfish and blue tilapia can also be found. There is a 14” minimum size for keeping the bass and a five bass limit in this lake. Other species have no size limit and the maximum for keeping is 50 fish. Be sure to attend our annual “Test the Waters” fishing tournament for children, held the first Saturday in October and no fishing license is required. And don’t forget that fishing is also popular at Dinky Dock Park and Kraft Azalea Garden.
Located along a 3-mile path that is used for biking, walking and skating. This path surrounds Lake Baldwin.
Howell Branch Preserve A 1/5-mile paved path features 10 exercise stations. The park has natural scenery to enjoy on your walk from sunrise to sunset.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Park A 1/2-mile walking path nicely decorated and features a fitness area with hydraulic fitness equipment such as cardio stepper, chest and back press, and ab crunch from sunrise to sunset.
Ward Park A 1/3-mile trail features fitness stations that are geared toward our senior population, but can be used by all ages. Included are a bench stepper, balance station and forearm rolls.

There are two municipal cemeteries that are managed by the Parks & Recreation Department. Palm Cemetery is located at New York and Webster avenues and is 17 acres. Pineywood Cemetery is located at Lakemont and Glenridge avenues and is 11 acres. With over 18,750 grave spaces in total, these cemeteries have served our community since the late 1800s.
palm&pineywood cemeteries
Palm Cemetery As early as 1883, Palm Cemetery was on land privately owned by Loring A. Chase. Then known as Chase Cemetery, the land accepted burials as early as 1898 which is the earliest recorded burial on the property. In April 1906, the 17-acre property was officially deeded to the City of Winter Park by Mr. Chase, who was buried in Palm Cemetery on August 24 the same year. You can find his monument, a marble obelisk over five feet tall, in the southeast corner of the cemetery. The inscription memorializes his historical importance to the city as “One of the founders of Winter Park in 1886.” rk Ave. 1005 N. New Yo
1900 S. Lakemont Ave.
Pineywood Cemetery
Pineywood Cemetery has been in existence since the early 1900s like Palm Cemetery, but the city’s ownership did not occur until 1970. It was formerly managed by the Pineywood Cemetery Association and deeded to the city in early 1970. Recorded burials date back to the 1890s and a rich history of Winter Park is recorded on the markers with the names of the families who are at rest in Pineywood. The cemetery represents the city’s history, its people and families.
