National

Older Americans Month Recognized in May

In honor of National Older Americans Month this May, Westerville promotes its Age-Friendly Initiative, a program adopted in 2021 that prepares a future community for the health, wellness and social needs for older adults.

Initially led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), the initiative was launched to learn how local government and residents can work together to keep our community a great place to live, work, play and retire.

According to the ACL, this year’s Older Americans Month theme is "Powered by Connection," which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. “Powered by Connection” dives into the role connectedness plays in supporting independence and aging in place by combating isolation, loneliness and other challenges older Americans face daily.

“Westerville is fortunate to have initiatives and facilities in place that aid in increasing older adult wellness,” said Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Director J.R. Fourqurean. “The Senior Center at the Community Center (350 N. Cleveland Ave.) is a vibrant place for older adults to explore new hobbies, develop interpersonal skills and build new friendships. It’s an important place that cultivates community, meaning and purpose into the lives of seniors and older adults within and surrounding the City,” Fourqurean continued.

Age-friendly communities promote healthy aging and improve the quality of life for residents. Goals for the Westerville Age-Friendly Initiative plan are grouped into eight sections:

1. Outdoor Spaces and Buildings: Provide accessibility to recreational facilities.

2. Transportation: Provide accessibility to modes of private and public transportation.

3. Housing: Provide a wide range of housing options.

4. Social Participation: Provide access to activities for older residents.

5. Respect and Social Inclusion: Provide programs to support and promote diversity.

6. Work and Civic Participation: Provide professional and volunteer opportunities including lifelong learning.

7. Communication and Information: Provide various communication methods to keep older residents informed and connected to their community, friends and family.

8. Community Support and Health Services: Provide access to homecare services and programs to promote wellness and active aging.

Developing an age-friendly Westerville is crucial in understanding the needs of every resident and meeting them where they are. At its core, the Initiative is about everyone in the City coming together so everyone can be engaged and as self-sufficient as possible; promoting a healthy, balanced and fulfilled lifestyle.

Small Steps to Improve Health and Wellness

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which is a great time to share resources and educational information to help combat the stigma associated with mental health concerns. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five Americans will experience a mental illness during their lifetime. Due to the prevalence of this issue, it is critical to do something to promote mental health every day; just as we should with our physical health.

Self-Care

Self-care is the act of doing something for oneself that provides a sense of peace and relaxation, improves focus or simply provides a break from daily, mundane activities. Planning to regularly incorporate self-care into your daily routine will help the practice become a part of your daily life, and can lead to increased mental clarity and improved overall health and wellness.

“I highly recommend people give themselves easily achievable goals to start,” said Linda Jakes, LISW-S, Executive Director of Concord Counseling Services (700 Brooksedge Blvd.). "When you take small steps and are successful, it gives you the impetus to add on and continue on your journey.”

“A self-care plan can be something as small as sitting quietly and breathing for 15 minutes every morning or even treating yourself to an ice cream cone once a week,” said Mike Preston, MSW, LSW, Director of Clinical Operations at Concord. “When creating a self-care plan, it should be very specific and behavior-focused, in terms of what you’re going to do, and then have someone aware of that plan to hold you accountable to it. The best thing to do is to do it as a team; with an accountability buddy.”

Connect with People Who Share Similar Paths

Creating social connections is a great way to boost mental health. Westerville Parks & Recreation offers a wide range of programs that present opportunities for participants to create meaningful connections with other community members. Explore current offerings in the class catalog.

Spending time with people who understand your unique journey can also improve your ability to recover from stress, anxiety and depression, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jakes and Preston recommend support groups, which provide safe spaces for connection with people dealing with similar issues.

“There are a lot of support groups out there with people who have similar experiences and that can really combat feelings of isolation,” said Preston. “There’s understanding that comes from the other folks in the group. They just understand.”

“Finding that niche and establishing that support net can be tremendously helpful,” said Jakes. “There are a lot of groups out there, and they’re usually free.”

When to Seek Professional Help

Sometimes preventative measures can eliminate the need for a higher level of care, but that is not always the case. Anyone who is experiencing persistent feelings of isolation, anger, depression or hopelessness is encouraged to seek professional help.

If you or a loved one have thoughts of self-harm, call or text #988 to be connected with a crisis specialist or visit the nearest emergency room.

“Peace Dawns Today”

Rotary Mural Brings New Life to Main Street

From street art in Bristol, England to graffiti parks in Capetown, South Africa, and Columbus Crew murals in central Ohio, local artist Adam Hernandez is jumping into his next project, right here in Uptown Westerville. The project is expected to be complete by the end of May.

Hernandez was selected as the artist for the new Rotary Club of Westerville Noon Club peace project mural on the Amish Originals building on East Main Street. His work is most known for its modern hieroglyphic-inspired style that pays homage to his Puerto Rican heritage. Hernandez shares his perspectives on his new project.

When did you first know that being an artist was your calling?

I have always wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. My family is filled with artists --musicians, singers, oil painters, clowns; we got it all. It wasn't until I was in my early 20s when someone bought a painting from me at an art show that I realized that it might be possible to pursue art as a profession.

Do you have training as an artist? How did you get here?

I have not had any formal training as an artist and I did not attend art school. I am here through a lot of hard work and trial and error. I just kind of jumped in and figured it out as I went along. Luckily, Columbus has a very supportive artistic community. There were

always other artists around who were able to help point me in the right direction.

Can you share your artist statement?

In my work, I draw inspiration from hieroglyphics and graffiti, two art forms that share a commonality in their intention and meaning. I showcase their relationship by borrowing techniques and concepts from both to create my own mythology. By referencing and reinterpreting these traditions and practices, I help to preserve their legacy and maintain their relevance for future generations.

What was your inspiration for the peace mural project?

"Peace Dawns Today" is a mural that is meant to engage and beautify the community, allow space for reflection and be an encouragement to live a life of peace and acceptance. The main subject of the mural is the dove. No matter your background, a dove is an instantly recognizable symbol of peace, a visual unifying moment.

Why is this project important to you?

It’s about finding common ground with each other. Elements of the mural are a nod to the peacemaking circles from the restorative justice practices taught at Westerville City Schools. These circles allow us to confront our challenges headon and not ignore them.

Do you have any other hobbies or interests?

When I am not making art, I am probably walking in nature with my wife and son, reading comics or playing music with my friends. I also love birds. I am an amateur birder, so the opportunity to paint one at such a large scale will be a lot of fun. Plus, when I was a kid, we had a pet dove named Wishbone!

Financial Planning Firm

Moves to Westerville

Incentive Programs Provide Businesses with Competitive Advantages

Bluestone Wealth Partners (BWP) became a part of the Westerville business community last fall. Before moving to Westerville, the firm provided financial planning services from their long-time home in Northern Columbus, near Worthington. When the iconic Westerville office building located at 162 Wetherby Ln. became available, BWP decided to relocate its executive branch, while maintaining operations in downtown Columbus and the Worthington area.

The City of Westerville offers a wide range of programs and incentives that provide competitive advantages for local businesses. The BusinessWISE program and potential access to the WeConnect Data Center were both attractive to BWP. BusinessWise, a rebate program for eligible energy efficiency and conservation projects, helps businesses reduce operating costs while increasing sustainability. The WeConnect Data Center is a reliable, one-of-a-kind IT infrastructure that provides access to advanced technologies so local businesses can efficiently operate on a global scale without limitations.

“In the big picture, Westerville’s robust lineup of products and initiatives provided a wonderful indication of how the community is run,” said Ric Martin, BWP’s founding partner. “All of these features will directly benefit our team.”

The building came complete with a workout facility, lower-level swimming pool and ornate structural designs, but it was not optimized for energy efficiency.

“Through a few changes and collaboration with Westerville’s energy consultants, we will likely be in line to receive some rebates from the BusinessWISE program,” said Adam Weingartner, BWP Partner.

As the team contemplates use for the fun spaces throughout the building, they also plan to utilize WeConnect Data Center, the nation’s first municipal data center that provides an array of connectivity advantages through an advanced fiber optic network.

“Our server is still located at our previous location, but we plan to move that to the WeConnect Data Center in the next year or two. That will be a major solution for us,” said Courtney Walls, BWP Partner.

BWP has proudly served the central Ohio community for more than 30 years, but its Westerville location is supported by City-owned and operated electric, fiber and water utilities that provide low utility costs, faster response times and improved reliability.

“The utilities system is world class, and our Internet speed is much improved from our previous location. We are new to owning a building, so all of these items have thoroughly impressed us!” said Gabe Martin, BWP Partner.

BWP works with corporate executives, retirees and high net worth families to develop plans to protect and optimize finances and offers a unique perspective to comprehensive financial planning that can be beneficial for people in various stages of their lives.

“One of our big differentiators is the ability to break down complex compensation structures and make sure our execs are maximizing their benefits package,” said Weingartner. “We bring your tax professionals and attorneys into the conversation to make sure that everyone on your team is pulling the rope in the same direction. In an industry that is characterized by high upside and low job security, we are proud to provide a much-needed service.”

Sensience Selects Westerville for New Headquarters

Since development of Westar began in 2014, the commercial development area has become home to an array of leading corporations, including banking institutions, manufacturers, technology firms and medical providers. Conveniently located at Polaris Parkway and Cleveland Avenue, Westar has helped create jobs for Westerville residents as the business community continues to flourish.

Sensience, a leader in advanced sensing technologies that improve safety and sustainability, recently relocated its global headquarters to the Westar Center. The move enables the company, formerly the Therm-O-Disc business of Emerson, to better capitalize on growth opportunities available to it as an independent company.

Sensience works with original equipment manufactures in the consumer appliance, automotive, HVAC, and other industries to design and manufacture sensors and controls that put systems in touch with their surroundings to maintain safety and enable sustainability. Producing nearly one billion sensors annually, Sensience counts leading manufacturers such as Whirlpool, Daikin and BAE Systems among its customers. The company has also recently taken a leadership position in supporting the transition to low-environmental impact refrigerants in commercial and residential air conditioning systems by becoming the first to offer certified sensing solutions for refrigerants.

“The key markets we serve are advancing and evolving in ways that are increasing demand for reliable and innovative sensing technologies and we are moving aggressively to take advantage of those opportunities,” said Julie Furber, Sensience Chief Executive Officer. “This new location gives us the space to grow, expands the talent pool we can access, and puts us close to both major highways and an international airport.”

Sensience, which had been headquartered in Mansfield, will lease 30,000 square feet at 570 Polaris Parkway in Westar. The location will house engineering, product management, sales and support functions.

“Westerville is excited to welcome Sensience to our community,” said Westerville City Manager Monica Dupee. “They join a number of other companies that have chosen to headquarter in the Westar area, which offers convenient access to a talented workforce and amenities including nature trails and dining options. As a community that values diversity, we are particularly excited for a woman-led global engineering and manufacturing company to call Westerville home.”

“We are committed to keeping jobs in Ohio and growing our workforce here,” said Furber. “This move enhances our ability to support our customers today and gives us the space to expand as we grow.”

First Parks and Recreation Director

Honored

The Westerville Parks Foundation's financial assistance program was recently renamed the Richard Rano Financial Assistance Program in honor of the first Director of the Westerville Parks and Recreation Department. Richard “Dick” Rano was a trailblazer who strove to improve the quality of life for all Westerville residents through increased access to City resources.

Rano served the City of Westerville for 30 years and laid the foundation for the Department under the philosophy that everyone should have access to the City’s phenomenal natural spaces, facilities and programs.

Under his leadership, the Parks and Recreation Department was recognized by the National Recreation and Parks Association with the Gold Medal for Excellence in Parks and Recreation in 1974 and 1997. Rano was responsible for the acquisition and/or redevelopment of many of Westerville’s signature parks, including Alum Creek Park North, Boyer Nature Preserve, Brooksedge Dog Park, Hanby Park, Heritage Park and Everal Barn, Highlands Park and Aquatics Center, Hoff Woods, Huber Village Park and Metzger Park. Additionally, Rano was recognized as a Westerville Champion, the City’s highest honor, in 2016.

The Westerville Parks Foundation Financial Assistance Program was established in the 1980s under Rano’s leadership. The program was built upon the idea that all people could have equitable access to the City’s parks and recreation services. After he passed away in June 2023, Rano’s family requested donations to the Westerville Parks Foundation in lieu of flowers. To date, more than $4,000 has been donated, which have been directed to the assistance program.

The newly branded program will help continue Rano’s legacy by reducing or eliminating financial barriers that prevent individuals from living healthy, active lifestyles. Through the program, Westerville residents may receive up to $100 per person or $500 per family per year in support of daily or monthly passes and registration fees.

To learn more about the Westerville Parks Foundation and how to donate to the financial assistance program, visit www.westervilleparksfoundation.org . Visit www.westerville.org/parks to learn about the City’s award-winning Parks and Recreation programs and services, including financial assistance.

City Intern

Nurturing the education of future leaders, Otterbein University is home to more than 2,000 undergraduate students. The City has been fortunate to partner with the university through internship opportunities for current scholars.

Graphic design intern Nevaeh Ellis has interned with the City’s Community Affairs Division for the last two years. She shared her insight into her collegiate experience in Westerville and why Otterbein was the right fit for her.

Ellis said her decision to attend Otterbein was influenced by the community she ultimately has had the opportunity to serve. “When I was deciding on what college to enroll in, I had a lot to consider. Ultimately, I decided to enroll at Otterbein University because I could tell there was a great community here and I felt it was a place I would genuinely enjoy and be able to call home. Otterbein is less than a 20-minute drive from Easton, Polaris and downtown Columbus. Being so close to home, I knew Otterbein was the perfect location for me.”

Ellis completed a double-major in Studio Art and Art History and Visual Culture, with a focus in graphic design and a minor in Film Studies. She noted the wide range of courses Otterbein offers and how being a Liberal Arts college has allowed for the development and nurturing of unique courses that ultimately led her to major in her fields of study.

“Beginning college during COVID was extremely difficult. It was hard to make friends because we were social distancing and were not allowed to gather in groups bigger than four anywhere on campus. Uptown Westerville provided me with many different activities, stores, coffee shops and parks to spend time in. I felt like I was welcomed into the community and supported immediately and have felt that way since,” she said.

Having a space off campus, within walking distance, provided Ellis a place to still feel connected to her collegiate community while being able to explore all Westerville has to offer. She explained the community she found in Westerville will be one of the hardest things to leave behind after graduation.

Homecoming weekend is a time to celebrate Otterbein and be with friends and family. Nevaeh (second from left) completes the day with a picture with friends Nate (left), Lilly (right) and school mascot, Cardy.

12

“A lot of my friends and places I like to go are all in this area and I have built a little life for myself. I think leaving that will be hard and I will miss that. I feel like a completely different person than I was four years ago and I owe that to my college experience as well as my time in Westerville,” said Ellis.

After graduating, Ellis plans to move to New York City to pursue a career in art, design and art history.

Congratulations, Nevaeh and the entire class of 2024!

One of Nevaeh's favorite classes at Otterbein was painting class where she learned so much and met great people. Above are paintings she created from that semester.

City Hall Project Update

The Westerville City Hall project is advancing, most recently through Uptown Review Board and making its way to Planning Commission in May. The project is viewed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity since the last major investment in the municipal facility was in 1987. It is central to the City’s ongoing work in maintaining an alive and vibrant Uptown, with more opportunities at the site for events, gatherings and centralized customer service.

Construction could begin later this year (see the following timeline), and is expected to take 18-24 months. Permits, utility bill and tax payments and other services will continue at 64 E. Walnut St. Check the City website for service updates during construction at www.westerville.org

State of the City 2024

"A Bold Day in Westerville"

On March 21, the City hosted its annual State of the City address at the Renaissance Westerville-Polaris Hotel. City Manager Monica Dupee delivered an inspiring speech about Westerville’s future in the face of the rapid development in Central Ohio. Dupee’s core message about the community’s future was “we will not stop being bold,” and focused on responsible, sustainable growth.

“In 12 short months, Westerville and Harlem Township looked at ways to grow reasonably and responsibly, and we found a common goal–controlling our future,” said Dupee. “Last year, I told you the headline was ‘Change Is Happening All Around Us.’ Well that’s still the headline for Central Ohio, but we’ve created our own headline, and by doing so took historic steps to protect the Westerville that we love for generations to come.”

Dupee closed her speech by sharing insight into next steps as the City prepares for the proposed merger. Asst. City Manager Jason Bechtold gave praise for the City's remarkable leadership, and announced the recipients of the Volunteers of the Year, Larry and Tiffany Jenkins, and the Organization of the Year, Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries. Lastly, City Council Chairman Michael Heyeck ended the evening with the presentation of the Champion Award, the City's highest honor to former City Law Director Bruce E. Bailey. Turn to pages 18-19 to learn about the award recipients.

Assistant City Manager Jason Bechtold greets attendees and presents the Organization of the Year and Volunteers of the Year awards. City Manager Monica Dupee delivers a speech about Westerville's future.

Bruce E. Bailey

The Westerville Champion award was created more than a decade ago to recognize the contributions of volunteers and servant leaders in our community who make a difference in Westerville. These are people who donate their time, treasure or talentand usually all three - to improve the quality of life for others. They are among the most selfless people who prioritize their community and focus on giving back–not for recognition, but because they are capable of fulfilling a need.

Bruce E. Bailey was named the 2024 Westerville Champion. Bailey has had a lifetime of contributions of making a better Westerville, because he’s spent his life in Westerville. He is nothing short of a legacy in the community; graduating from Westerville High School, raising his family here and serving the public as the Law Director of the City of Westerville.

Larry and Tiffany Jenkins

Larry and Tiffany Jenkins were named the 2023 Volunteers of the Year due to their exceptional commitment to volunteerism and their ongoing support of special projects and activities throughout the community. The couple have shared their time and expertise in a variety of ways through the many volunteer hours they have provided to the community.

Never seeking recognition, the Jenkins have worked together and individually to help maintain Westerville’s authentic charm and the City’s appeal for people from all walks of life, including new and longtime residents, students, first responders, veterans and members of the business community.

The Jenkins were the visionaries of the Field of Heroes, a proud display of thousands of flags during Memorial Day, and they also provide storage for the flags throughout the year. Additionally, the Jenkins have led the Westerville South Instrumental Music Boosters for the last six years with Larry as President, handyman and transportation coordinator and Tiffany as leader of countless endeavors including uniforms, meals, fundraising and serving as group mom.

Together, the Jenkins have financially supported a number of parks, including First Responders Park and the Westerville Veterans Memorial. Individually, Larry has served on the Westerville Parks Foundation, Westerville Rotary, Friends for Westerville Parks and Citizens for Westerville/Blendon Fire Service. Tiffany has served on the City’s Community Partner Funding committee to evaluate funding requests that benefit residents and businesses.

Bailey has helped Westerville in ways that most people would not know. He has always been interested in protecting the history, community and integrity of Westerville. His advice over time has protected a beautiful and vibrant Uptown, a thriving business community and an unmatched quality of life for residents.

Advocacy has always been central to Bailey’s mission for Westerville. He and his family have supported Westerville parks and facilities, Westerville for Honor Flight and countless Otterbein University activities and initiatives. He has also protected a part of Westerville’s history through the commission of “The American Issue,” a sculpture representing Westerville's role in prohibition.

Bailey is thoughtful by definition. He puts intention and care into his words, deeds and actions. He has been the protector and friend of Westerville his entire life. He’s always there to help. Westerville is transitioning to a future that is very bright and that is overwhelmingly a legacy of citizen Bailey.

Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries

Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries (FACT) received the 2023 Organization of the Year award in honor of its longstanding contributions to the community. Organization members have collectively volunteered more than 20,000 hours, working to protect Alum Creek and tributaries, the primary source of water supply in Westerville, for the past 26 years. The group has organized more than 6,000 individual, civic group and corporate volunteers in service projects that directly impact daily water quality.

Organization volunteers recently secured grant funding for the implementation of a rain garden at Otterbein University and a water quality study to assess the impact of the Westerville Road/270 Industrial site on Alum Creek and water supply. The group previously worked with Westerville Parks and Recreation and 60 corporate volunteers to plant 1,675 trees along Alum Creek in less than two hours.

FACT also supports student service projects at all three of the Westerville high schools and Genoa Middle School. Community Center Provides Lasting Benefits

Community Center programs positively impact participants’ lives in a variety of ways. Passport holder Kay W. shares her experience:

I have attended a particular Community Center class for many years. An outcome of the class that was surprising to me was the formation of lasting and rewarding friendships. When the Community Center closed during the height of the pandemic, some of us decided to meet outside and walk together during our regularly scheduled class time. The walking group gave us something to look forward to, friendly people to chat with, Westerville's many great outdoor trails to enjoy and much-needed safe exercise.

When our favorite class reopened at the Community Center, we resumed classes and also continued to meet with our walking group. None of us really knew each other before and now we celebrate birthdays and support each other's joys and challenges. Who knew we could still make new friends in our 60s, 70s and beyond! Thank you, Community Center, for providing vigorous activity in classes for all ages that have probably sparked more life-affirming relationships than ours. Mission accomplished!

Adam McDowell Named Westerville Water Utility Manager

Adam McDowell has been named the Water Utility Manager for the City of Westerville. McDowell previously worked for the City of Defiance, Ohio, for nearly 33 years, and served as Superintendent for the last 13 years. He holds an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Class 4 Water Operators License and an Ohio EPA Class 1 Wastewater Operators License. McDowell specializes in source water protection efforts, plant upgrades and project management.

“It is an honor to join Westerville’s highly esteemed Division of Water,” said McDowell. “My goal is to utilize my experience and technical skills in water utility operations to serve Westerville residents by providing reliable services that meet and exceed the standards they are accustomed to.”

McDowell began his role with the City in March 2024 and will build upon the Division’s exceptional reputation as the community continues to develop and expand.

“The need for high-quality water, and efficient operations and management will become increasingly important as the Westerville community continues to develop and expand,” said Westerville Assistant City Manager Jason Bechtold. “We are fortunate to have identified McDowell as the leader who will build upon the dependable services and standards set forth by his predecessors and will continue to guide the delivery of outstanding water service for Westerville residents, schools and businesses.”
