The AARP Income Tax Service will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from February 2 through April 13 at the Center from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. by appointment only. AARP Representatives will prepare Federal, State, and City income tax forms. Please bring 1099 forms for 2016 showing Social Security, interest, dividends, pension or annuity income, your W2 form reporting wages, and a copy of last year’s tax return(s). Appointments for Center members will be accepted beginning Tuesday, January 3 and nonmembers beginning Monday, January 23 by calling the Center at (614) 901-6560.

Golf Leagues

Registration for the Men’s and Women’s Golf Leagues will begin March 1. All members will need to stop in the Senior Center and fill out the golf league form - these forms WILL NOT be ready prior to March 1.

Returning members of the Men’s 18-hole League will have priority registration from March 1 - 31. Open registration for this league will begin April 3. Neither the Women’s or Men’s 9-hole League have a cap, allowing registration to run throughout the summer.

Complete details about all three leagues will be announced in the March/April/May Newsletter as well as at the membership meeting on April 5.

& NOTES

With the days growing shorter and the weather turning colder there’s a chance we may be required to close. If the Westerville City Schools close due to inclement weather, then we are also closed.

Transportation to a doctor’s appointment or to the grocery store is a decision made by Senior Center staff. If you have signed up for this service, you will receive a phone call from us.

Congratulations to both Margi Rundio and Floyd Siebert for their additions to the Senior Center’s Star Wall of Fame. Turn to the back cover to see images from their special day.

This past fall we welcomed Becky Fennig to our team as the new Senior Center Cook. Becky has done a great job learning the position and working with the volunteers. She’s also increased our menu options to include heartier meals. As a result, meals will be priced to more accurately reflect the cost associated with their preparation. Weekly menus, including prices, will be available by Friday afternoon the week before. This will allow us the opportunity to take advantage of any sales our local grocery stores offer. Wednesdays will continue to be sandwiches with hot soup or fresh fruit. Fridays will be a heartier meal offering a hot entree with sides and dessert. Prices will not exceed $5.

The Senior Center Garage Sale will be held April 27 & 28. Think of us when you’re spring cleaning.

Donations can be dropped off beginning March 1.

Holiday Open House at Dublin Retirement Village

Learn how to control your digital camera and create more pleasing photos in a variety of situations.

Enhance your technical skills in exposure, depth-offield, autofocus, flash, white balance, scenic modes, camera operation and maintenance. Students should have completed Beginning Digital Camera or be proficient in taking pictures in Automatic Mode.

Learn how to create High Dynamic Range (HDR) photographs using Photomatix software and Photoshop Elements. In this three session course you will learn how to shoot photos for HDR, how to create HDR pictures in Photomatix, and finish the process in Photoshop Elements. You will need a camera capable of shooting bracketed shots, good computer skills, and have some experience in Photoshop Elements.

Walk along the comfortable, glass-enclosed suspended “Cat-Walk” and observe nine lines producing 30,000 pounds of chocolates per shift. Experienced tour guides explain each process step-by-step from the kitchens to final packaging. View interesting sights such as our huge copper kettles where the centers of some of the candies are created and unique silverwrapped pipes that carry liquid chocolate throughout the factory. TRIPS & SKIPS SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES Lacomedia – Steel Magnolias Rate: $65 due at reg We will travel to Springboro, Ohio and enjoy the famous buffet that includes their house signature salad, chef carved meats, some dishes to represent the “flavor” of the current production and much more. A tribute to the charm and wit of Southern women, Steel Magnolias is a touching comedydrama that shows the healing power of laughter and friendship. The women of Chinquapin, Louisiana find strength and comfort in one another as they deal with life’s struggles, often through a fair amount of verbal ribbing.

National Road & Zane Grey Museum Rate: $25 due at reg We will have a private tour (admission included) when you will learn about the National Road, early America’s busiest land artery to the West, stretched from Cumberland, MD to Vandalia, IL. Begun in 1806, the “Main Street of America” was the only significant land link between the east coast and the western frontier in the early 19th century. Explore the adventure novels and Westerns of Zanesville author Zane Grey and see examples of the art pottery for which this region of Ohio was famous in the 20th century. After our tour, enjoy lunch (on your own) at Muddy Misers, a local tavern named for a reclusive, market fisherman.

Westerville Underground Railroad History Rate: $10 due at reg Beth Weinhardt, local history coordinator, will teach us about the role Westerville residents played in the Underground Railroad. Westerville was known to be an anti-slavery town and had stops on the Underground Railroad. Learn how the towns people here had a reputations for their abolitionist sentiments and how the residents participated. Many Underground Railroad homes still stand in this area today. We will enjoy a late lunch (on your own) after this program.

This past fall we welcomed Becky Fennig to our team as the new Senior Center Cook.

Becky has done a great job learning the position and working with the volunteers.

She’s also increased our menu options to include heartier options. As a result, meals will be priced to more accurately reflect the cost associated with their preparation. Weekly menus, including prices, will be available by Friday afternoon the week before. This will allow us the opportunity to take advantage of any sales our local grocery stores offer.

Wednesdays will continue to be sandwiches with hot soup or fresh fruit. Fridays will be a heartier meal offering a hot entree with sides and dessert. Prices will not exceed $5.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES Safe Call Rate: FREE

Safe Call is a daily telephone check-in service for home-bound, handicapped and elderly residents. Once you are enrolled in Safe Call, a computer will call your home every day at a time you have chosen. For further information, or to sign up, please call the Safe Call Coordinator, Kippy Shurman, at (614) 901-6790.

Financial Assistance for Bus Passes Rate: FREE

The Westerville Senior Association, Inc. has established a program for those members who require financial assistance to participate in the Senior Center’s Transportation Program. This program is open to members whose incomes are 150% of the poverty level, according to the 2014 Guidelines. Those wishing to apply, or reapply, should pick up and return the forms at the Senior Center to Sande. All requests for assistance are confidential.

Westerville & New Albany Senior Support Rate: FREE

This program is an in-home consultation service. Your consultant will be able to provide: emotional support, limited transportation, referral and linkage to other county services, assistance with questions and problems, and friendship. To reach a consultant, call the Westerville/New Albany Senior Support Program at (614) 901-6560 between the hours of 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Mon - Fri. We will take the needed information, answer any questions and link you with a consultant.

We offer personalized delivery of books, movies and music to those in need. Simply tell us the items you want and they will be delivered them free of charge. If you are home-bound and live in the Westerville City School district, please call us for details at (614) 259-5034.
