A Saturday Staple Returns: May 16 Mark your calendars! The Westerville Saturday Farmers Market, hosted

by Uptown Westerville, Inc., officially returns for the season on Saturday, May 16. The market will remain in the COhatch and North High Brewing parking lots (240 S. State St.) throughout the season. Join us every Saturday from 9 a.m. - noon through September to support local growers, bakers and makers.

Streamlined services now available

The City Hall Improvement Project is nearing completion as Westerville’s City Hall building will reopen later this summer. The highly anticipated transition will mark the beginning of the City’s new fully streamlined Centralized Customer Service experience. Residents currently have access to the recently-implemented live chat feature on the City’s website and a designated Centralized Customer Service phone number; both of which enable residents, visitors and members of the business community to quickly connect with City staff and locate information at the point of need.

The once-in-a-generation project also streamlines our operations into a more efficient footprint. City operations now take up less space in the historic Uptown district and throughout the community, leaving more room for the vibrant restaurants and local experiences that make our City shine.

A Lifelong Dream Realized

Former WFD Chief Brian Miller reflects on 26-year career

In early April, Westerville Division Fire Chief Brian Miller retired, concluding a remarkable tenure that spanned 26 years. More than a career, Miller’s work with the division was the realization of a lifelong passion that impacted his professional and personal life just as much as he positively impacted others throughout the division and the City through his steady, visionary leadership.

“This is pretty much all I ever wanted to do since I was about 3 years old,” said Miller. “I’ve actually been walking the halls here at Station 111 for about 35 years now.”

His journey with the WFD began long before he was officially on the payroll, starting as an explorer at the age of 15 with what is now the Westerville Youth Public Safety Academy. Miller later launched his career with WFD as a Firefighter/Paramedic in 2000, rising quickly through the ranks to become the City’s Chief Fire Marshal in 2012, and then Fire Chief in 2015. He vividly recalled the moment his dream became reality: being hired part-time, sitting on the back of Engine 111 on his first call.

“I was just grinning ear to ear like I finally realized my dream, and on top of that, I was getting paid to do it,” said Miller.

Throughout his career, Miller’s philosophy has been one of servant leadership.

-Chief Brian Miller “This job was never about me. It was always about serving the community and working with our firefighters,” said Miller. “I always try to listen to what people say, be engaged with the community and look at data to see what’s going on and what the needs of the community are.”

His data-driven, community-centric approach led to the development of key initiatives, including the creation of a Community Service Coordinator position to help residents connect with essential services. The development of the position was based on prior discussions with older adults and the Westerville Division of Police, where the Public Safety teams recognized a gap between available resources and public awareness.

Miller also stressed the importance of making fire prevention a core mission. Under his direction, all full-time firefighters are required to be fire inspectors and regularly engage with residents, organizations and the business community to identify hazards and promote fire prevention best practices.

“I’ve always said the best fire to have is the one that never happened,” said Miller.

Chief Miller’s leadership approach was also shaped by his background in disaster management, which was heavily influenced by a deployment to St. Bernard Parish after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

“That was life-changing for me,” said Miller. “I learned a lot down there.”

That experience provided invaluable insight that helped shape Westerville’s preparedness for subsequent events, including providing safety support for the fourth Democratic Presidential Debate at Otterbein University in 2019. Throughout his tenure, he was also responsible for overseeing the City’s disaster plan and running the Emergency Operations Center during special events.

City Manager Monica Dupee lauded his impact, stating, “Chief Miller has been a pillar of safety and leadership in Westerville for over two decades, particularly in emergency management. His dedication to the highest level of commitment is evident in the professional, life-saving organization he leaves behind.”

WFD’s community-centric nature, a legacy from its volunteer roots, is also a point of pride for Miller.

Whether it’s through the Citizens Fire Academy, the Citizens Auxiliary Resource Team or providing education at events like Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays, community engagement and relationshipbuilding are critical.

“My philosophy is we're a community-based fire division here for you, so we work with the schools, Otterbein University, and we have relationships with a lot of the businesses here in town. We're out doing fire inspections on a daily basis, and that community engagement is vital for our fire service,” said Miller.

“We're a full-service City, so we also work with all the departments. It’s about having relationships with all those different groups to make our services the best that they can be, not just for the Fire Division, but for the City as well.”

Looking back on a career built on passion and service, Miller offers advice for those considering a similar path: “It’s about serving the community. A lot of times when people are calling us, it’s their worst day,” said Miller. “It’s our job to really show up and try to make that day better for them. I can’t say enough about the communities of Westerville and Blendon Township. They’ve always been so supportive of us, and we do everything we can to support them.”

Splish, Splash to 15 Years of Fun! HPAC continues to make big waves The Highlands Park Aquatic Center (HPAC) opened in 2011, and the popularity of the facility has grown every year since. In 2025, HPAC received nearly 80,000 passholders and daily admission visits and more than 3,000 rentals.

Miller’s oldest child will enter high school this coming August, and her other two children will be in middle and elementary school. Throughout the years and across the age ranges, HPAC has continued to meet the family’s evolving needs.

Located at 245 S. Spring Rd., HPAC offers more than a typical neighborhood pool experience. The facility features an 8-lane, 25-meter pool complete with a diving well, along with a lazy river, spray playground and a tower with speed and body slides. The zeroentry toddler pool and simulated rock slide are also available for younger visitors.

“All three of my children use nearly every amenity HPAC has to offer. They are constantly going between the slides, the diving boards, the lazy river and the pools,” said Miller. “There is just always something to do to keep them busy! They sometimes still play on the splash pad during safety breaks.

They love the snacks, slushies and ice cream treats at the Otter's Den snack bar. The Christmas in July event is always super fun for them—they love the Wibit inflatable obstacle course so much.”

Community member Jen Miller frequently visits HPAC with her family an estimated 20-30 times per season. The family of five became pass holders when their oldest child was around 7 years old.

The natural design and landscaping also made it feel very peaceful for a public pool.”

HPAC also offers a haven for adults seeking refuge from the summer heat.

“I am an educator and have graduated to the phase of motherhood where I can read while my kids play in the pool, so I love that there are chairs in the shade! I love the adults-only time in the lazy river during the rest breaks,” said Miller. “I love being able to bring in my own food and snacks, but also appreciate the convenience of the snack bar. As a passholder, I know I can get into the pool even on the hottest days. While I am not a ‘regular,’ I really enjoy meeting friends for Water Walkers when it fits in my schedule. Also, the slides are still fun for adults too. I love that I can go down the slides during the safety breaks without waiting in a long line!”

The Dreamers: Westerville’s Future of Possibilities State of the City outlines goals, celebrates achievements

The 2026 State of the City was held Monday, March 2 at the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel. The event kicked off with an inspiring video showcasing residents' dreams for Westerville followed by City Manager Monica Dupee outline of a dream that includes maintaining the City's authentic charm while thoughtfully creating new job opportunities and amenities for residents, visitors and members of the business community.

A dream and the determination to make it happen remain the foundation for a community that boasts an impressive 88% satisfaction rating. While residents celebrate Westerville as a safe, family-friendly sanctuary, leadership is pivoting to address modern anxieties like property taxes, City development and rapid regional growth. By anchoring the City’s governance in the principles of transparency and nonpartisan competence, City leaders are working to maintain high levels of local trust. This commitment to exemplary service is evidenced by innovative social shifts, such as the Fire Division’s new full-time social worker and a $2 million investment in the Home Improvement Grant Program to support neighbors with financial needs.

Looking toward the horizon, the City is strategically balancing historic preservation with bold commercial expansion. The East of Africa roadway network is set to become a hub for corporate innovation and job creation, all while keeping the historic Sharp House intact as a link to the past. Simultaneously, a commitment to an authentic and alive Uptown district remains in the City’s heart. The reopening of the City Hall building this May marks a consolidation of staff that supports the reduction of the government's footprint in Uptown, making way for unique development opportunities. However, these dreams are not a solo venture. City leaders are asking residents to engage with the new Westerville Community Plan and the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Master Plan; the first of such updates in a decade. The City honored former Westerville Council Chair Michael Heyeck as the 2026 Westerville Champion.

In December 2025, Mr. Heyeck sunset his 32-year career of public service to the community. He is one of the longest-tenured Council members in the City’s history, having served in every Council role: Vice Mayor, Mayor, Vice Chair and 14 years as Council Chairman.

Mr. Heyeck understands that municipal government has a complex model of development for revenue and financial management to ensure stability. A champion for economic development, from the Medical Mile to Westar, his fingerprints are embedded in many successful projects.

There is also a certain pride to be taken in Westerville’s tradition of excellent financial management. Mr. Heyeck’s work on Council has contributed to the City’s longtime Moody’s Aaa Bond Rating and more than 30 consecutive years of award-winning audits.

He advocated for increases in public safety personnel to keep pace with Westerville’s growth, and he coined the phrase “a city within a park” to recognize Westerville’s excellence in parks and recreation. As an added bonus, Mr. Heyeck has a passion for utilities, especially the electric utility, as he worked to keep Westerville’s utilities affordable, reliable and 73 cents on the dollar.

He has always made it clear to staff that the historic Uptown district is Westerville’s jewel. For Mr. Heyeck, the approach has been about balancing growth with creative solutions, along with parking and community space. The Uptown façade improvement program, support for Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Fridays, City Hall improvements, redevelopment projects and the Uptown Fire Suppression program were completed in his tenure to strike that balance.

Considering the number of years of his service, Mr. Heyeck has worked with hundreds of City staff members who have appreciated his curiosity, candor and sense of humor. His lessons and ideas will long carry on, and the City expresses immense gratitude for his 32 years of service.

William Heaphy III

Since 2007, William “Bill” Heaphy III has served as a foundational pillar of the Westerville History Museum, contributing over 7,200 hours of volunteer service. A former lawyer with a keen eye for detail, Bill has meticulously cataloged tens of thousands of records, including the nationally renowned AntiSaloon League collection and the papers of former Ohio Governor John Kasich. His work transformed inaccessible archives into searchable resources, enabling staff to develop exhibits, assist researchers and engage the 12,500 visitors annually who explore Westerville’s heritage. Beyond simple data entry, Bill’s deep institutional memory and commitment are unrivaled. He often fills in for staff during breaks and was the first volunteer invited back following the pandemic-related lockdown, reflecting the immense trust he has earned within the organization.

Bill’s impact is defined by a blend of technical proficiency and community advocacy. In 2024, he mastered new collection software to further modernize the museum’s digital reach and played a critical role in the "Ohio Women Vote" exhibit by identifying key historical artifacts, such as 1917 poll books. His contributions also extend to sensitive social history. Notably, he synthesized complex research for the "Undesign the Redline" exhibit at Otterbein University, helping students and faculty map the local history of structural racism and redlining in Westerville.

By consistently going beyond his duties—logging over 400 hours in 2025 alone—Bill ensures that the City’s history is not just preserved in boxes, but is actively shared, understood and used to build a more informed community.

Westerville Youth Baseball and Softball League Since its founding in 1951, the Westerville Youth Baseball and Softball League (WYBSL) has evolved from a small, four-team operation into a cornerstone of central Ohio’s recreational landscape. Now celebrating 75 years, the entirely volunteer-driven organization supports over 1,500 children annually through the dedication of board members, coaches and families. The league has demonstrated adaptability and inclusivity over the decades, expanding to include girls’ softball in 1975 and tee-ball in 1987. By focusing on characterbuilding, sportsmanship and teamwork rather than just the scoreboard, WYBSL has created a multigenerational legacy of community pride that serves young athletes from ages 4-18.

The scale of the league’s impact is matched only by the staggering level of volunteer commitment required to sustain it. In the 2025 season alone, coaches and staff contributed more than 18,000 volunteer hours to manage 136 teams—a figure that doesn't account for the additional time provided by umpires, parents and board members.

By maintaining a safe, inclusive and positive environment for three-quarters of a century, WYBSL has proven itself to be a premier example of how collective volunteerism can shape the lives of thousands of families and foster a resilient community spirit.

A New Kind of Day in Uptown Westerville Three new businesses in and around Uptown Westerville are offering fresh ways to spend a day in one of Ohio’s most charming cities. Long known for its walkable streets a nd welcoming atmosphere, Westerville continues to evolve in 2026 with new places to eat, sip and shop.

These additions reflect the City’s growth as a thriving community hub and the creativity of local entrepreneurs who are shaping experiences for residents and visitors.

A New Kind of Day in Uptown Westerville Three new businesses in and around Uptown Westerville are offering fresh ways to spend a day in one of Ohio’s most charming cities. Long known for its walkable streets and welcoming atmosphere, Westerville continues to evolve in 2026 with new places to eat, sip and shop.

These additions reflect the city’s growth as a thriving community hub and the creativity of local entrepreneurs who are shaping experiences for residents and visitors.

Morning Starts Here — WestHouse by Espresso Air Espresso Air has long been known for great coffee, but its new Uptown concept, WestHouse, is about more than what’s in the cup. Owner Talip Kucuker envisioned a space that encourages visitors to slow down and savor.

“Traditional coffee culture often revolves around speed, productivity, and caffeine as fuel,” he explains. “There’s nothing wrong with that, but we felt there was space for something slower and more intentional. With WestHouse, we wanted to create a place that feels like a pause in your day rather than a pit stop; less about rushing in and out, and more about staying, connecting, and enjoying something thoughtfully made in a calm, welcoming space.”

That intention is reflected in the shop’s focus on ceremonial matcha, an option that welcomes those who don’t experience caffeine the same way.

"My wife has a caffeine sensitivity to filter coffee and espresso,” said Kucuker. “When we discovered matcha together, we saw how it didn’t affect her negatively as coffee does. Coffee gives you a fast spike of caffeine all at once, while matcha releases caffeine more slowly and steadily. We wanted to bring a new space to Uptown Westerville to include people like my wife.”

While matcha draws guests in, the chocolate fondue boxes encourage them to linger. Beautifully arranged and designed to share, they transform a simple treat into a memorable experience.

“Shared food naturally slows people down. It creates conversation, laughter and moments that aren’t planned but end up being remembered,” he said.

“With the fondue boxes, the goal isn’t just the food, it’s what happens around it. We hope people put their phones down, talk a little longer and leave feeling more connected to whomever they came with.”

And when guests step back onto Uptown’s sidewalks, Kucuker hopes they carry something intangible with them.

“I hope they leave feeling calmer than when they walked in,” he says. “That they felt welcomed, unhurried and genuinely taken care of. If they walk away thinking, ‘That place felt good,’ then we’ve done our job.”

Supporting Families with Little Sparrows Westerville is recognized as one of Ohio’s best places for families thanks to excellent schools, safe neighborhoods and a strong sense of community.

It’s the kind of place where strollers walk through Uptown as part of daily life, and where small businesses grow alongside the families they serve.

That spirit inspired longtime Westerville entrepreneurs Amy and Tony Cabilovski to introduce Little Sparrows Baby & Pet Boutique, the newest sister shop to Stone & Sparrow and Edwin Loy Home.

Located at 34 N. State St., Little Sparrows is expected to open mid-to-late March 2026. The shop is set to offer a thoughtfully curated destination for the City’s youngest residents and their furry friends.

Amy Cabilovski says the idea emerged organically.

“We tested the waters with baby and pet items at Edwin Loy Home, and the reaction was positive enough that we thought there would be enough demand to open an independent boutique dedicated to baby and pet apparel and gifts,” she said.

Little Sparrows is designed to feel less like a retail stop and more like an extension of home.

“We hope that families feel at home and are comfortable in the knowledge that we strive to provide the same quality of service, care, and products that we do at Edwin Loy Home and Stone & Sparrow.”

Inside, shoppers will find charming gifts, keepsakes, apparel, and accessories chosen with practicality and delight in mind.

“We always try to find the balance of the best unique products at reasonable prices, creating symmetry between value and quality that we can stand behind,” Cabilovski said. “And the products must be cute.”

Code, Cultivate, Contribute Local web developer re-wires the modern native garden Westerville resident Doug Cichon, a web developer for nearly two decades, never spent a lot of time thinking about his home garden or flower beds at his Annehurst home. Actually, he never gave it much thought at all. They were just things that needed to be maintained. However, those back-of-mind garden chores took top priority when Cichon read Douglas Tallamy’s books “Bringing Nature Home” and “Nature’s Best Hope.”

The first book examined the unbreakable link between native plant species and wildlife, and the second presented a vision of a homegrown approach to conservation that can happen right in your own backyard, helping protect native wildlife and plant habitats. Cichon didn’t need further convincing and began putting those words into action by starting his journey into native gardening and backyard habitat creation.

“These books really resonated with me. So much of the conservation dialogue is about doing ‘less damage’ and this was something you do to build things back up,” said Cichon. “It’s such a hopeful and optimistic take.”

The journey to becoming a backyard conservationist wasn’t an easy start. When Cichon and his wife were planning their garden, they struggled to figure out what to plant. They scoured dozens of websites, but found many were designed for use by horticultural experts or were outdated, slow and burdensome to use, and often didn’t present all of the needed information.

Through the database, Planting.Life, home gardeners can find an abundance of information to support their local ecosystems from anywhere in the country. Users simply enter their ZIP code and the type of plants they are looking for and the database produces the available options for their growing zone.

“When I first started working on this project, I leaned heavily on AI to get information,” said Cichon. “But as time went on, I connected with experts and started replacing the AI bits with information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Wildflower Center [at the University of Texas at Austin].”

After completing substantial work on the website, Cichon participated in an event called GiveBackHack, a pitch session for local entrepreneurs who develop sustainable solutions for pressing social issues.

The Planting.Life website project won $5,000 for further development at the event. Cichon donated his project award to the City to use for the purchase of native plants to be planted throughout the parks system.

“This is an open-source project. I share all of the data I have,” said Cichon. “This was never about extracting value; it was about creating something valuable and useful for people.”

Cichon saw an opportunity to fill that knowledge gap and went to work creating a native plant database that was easily accessible for and usable by home gardeners. Charitable, political and faith-based organizations are exempt and not considered solicitors that must obtain permits to visit private residences; however, those entities must still honor posted signs prohibiting solicitation and the 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. approved hours requirement.

Free, printed No Solicitor signs are also available at the Justice Center (229 Huber Village Blvd.), City Hall (21 S. State St.) and the Community Center (350 N. Cleveland Ave.).

The No Solicitation Registry is a living document, so it will be possible for permitted solicitors not to have the latest edition of prohibited resident addresses as soon as an opt-out request is made. Opt-out information will be updated monthly on the first day of each month. Provisions are based on Section 741.03(a)(1) and 743.03(a) of Ordinance Ord. No. 2025-20.

Westerville Continues Tradition of Tree City USA When Westerville first received the Tree City USA recognition in 1976, the City maintained a handful of parks and did not have a dedicated trail system.

Today, the City boasts a nationally accredited and gold medal-winning Parks and Recreation Department, with 51 miles of paved recreation trails, 26 parks spanning 650 acres and 67 acres of wetlands. These spaces provide residents and guests with outdoor spaces to enjoy fitness, recreation and relaxation and are all wrapped in the tree canopy meticulously managed by the City’s Parks Maintenance Urban Forestry Division.

This April, Westerville again earned the Tree City USA designation for the 50th year, one of only 16 cities nationwide to receive this honor since the program's inception.

Tree City USA Beginning with only 42 communities in 16 states, Tree City USA, a national recognition program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, has grown to include more than 3,550 communities spanning every state in the nation, sharing the vision of greener, more vibrant cities that prioritize urban tree planting. By meeting the following fundamental standards, an incorporated municipality of any size can qualify: • The City must have a tree board or department.

• The City must have a tree care ordinance.

• The City must have a community forest program with an annual per capita budget of at least $2.

• The City must have an Arbor Day proclamation and observance.

“Maintaining more than 15,000 street trees, along with all trees in parks and other public spaces, is about caring for a vital part of our community’s infrastructure. Our urban forestry team regularly inspects, prunes and manages these trees to keep them healthy, safe and thriving,” said Parks Forestry Manager Adam Williams. “This ongoing care helps maximize the benefits trees provide—cooling neighborhoods, improving air quality, supporting wildlife and making our streets and parks more beautiful and welcoming.

By actively managing our urban forest, we ensure it continues to serve and strengthen the community for years to come.”

Tree Selection Process Planting the right tree in the right site ensures healthier growth, reduces maintenance and increases long-term survival. Certain trees need to be planted in specific locations because each species has different needs for drainage, sunlight, space for roots and canopy and tolerance to urban stressors.

“Fifty years ago, many communities planted long rows of fast-growing shade trees, such as elms and maples, along residential streets and in new subdivisions to quickly establish a canopy,” said Williams. “At that time, the focus was often on uniform appearance and rapid growth with less emphasis on species diversity or long-term resilience. Today, we’ve learned from that approach and prioritize planting a diverse mix of species in appropriate locations to reduce pest vulnerability, improve longevity and better match site conditions.”

The Parks Maintenance Urban Forestry Division plants nearly 500 trees with a 2-inch diameter at breast height (DBH) each year to expand on the

City’s tree canopy and to replace trees that may have been damaged, are unhealthy or have been removed. DBH measures the diameter of the tree trunk and is an industry standard for monitoring tree health and growth.

New Street Tree Options for Residents Westerville's Street Tree program promotes environmental sustainability and enhances the City’s well-being by expanding the urban canopy to improve streetscapes. An increased number of trees contributes to improved air quality, reduced stormwater runoff and significant carbon storage.

The program prioritizes areas lacking street trees and will fulfill these areas as budgets allow. A variety of tree species are chosen for each area based on the streetscape plan. Residents may contact ParksTrees@Westerville.org to be added to a waiting list if their address falls in a different area. Parks Staff Present at Annual OPRA Conference Westerville Parks and Recreation staff organize and lead classes at the Westerville Community Center while managing their own divisions. They also volunteer their time to share expertise with other Parks and Recreation professionals at the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association's (OPRA) annual conference. In February, two staff members presented at the 2026 OPRA annual conference.

Bill Plessinger manages the Westerville Senior Center and Older Adults Program and has more than 30 years of experience working in parks and recreation. He first thought about organizing a panel during a Senior Center roundtable at the Ohio Parks and Recreation State Conference in February 2025.

His goal was to bring senior center managers from organizations of varying sizes together to discuss patron offerings.

“Westerville is fortunate to have a larger center,” said Plessinger. “Other centers are much smaller and are limited in what they can offer. Some municipalities have Senior staff but no facility and use other buildings, churches and rented space.”

“I wanted to create a presentation for the municipalities that do not yet offer adaptive programming, and offer some options that could help set their staff and participants up for success,” said Thompson.

During the presentation, Thompson addressed specialized programs, sensory-friendly events, accessible facilities and equipment, and provided guidance on working with individuals with disabilities and managing behaviors.

“I've had a few organizations follow up since then with questions or to set up meetings with me,” said Thompson.

Both Plessinger and Thompson plan to continue supporting the community by offering more classes and presentation and presentations.

While planning, Plessinger met with staff from nearby senior centers. He decided that sharing how a senior center moves from an old facility to a new one, along with the challenges faced, would be helpful at the OPRA annual conference. With the other senior center staff members from around the area, he co-developed a presentation called “What’s New and Old with Senior Centers,” which was accepted for the Senior Programming Learning Track.

Adaptive/Inclusive Program Supervisor Shane Thompson also serves in the Westerville Parks and Recreation Department. He presented “A Beginner’s Guide to Adaptive and Inclusive Programming,” which drew a large audience at the OPRA conference. Thompson has more than 10 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities, and before his current role, he spent 10 years helping students and adults with developmental disabilities in classrooms and day programs.

Giving the Past a Presence Local historians restore cemetery history Tucked away at the end of West Lincoln Street, adjoining Otterbein University’s campus, is a place that fades into its surroundings. Hundreds of college students walk past the site every day, unlikely to turn their heads to discover a site of remarkable local history. Within its perimeter of wrought iron fencing and canopy of mature trees, the Olde Methodist Cemetery holds the stories of Westerville's earliest settlers and first supporters of Otterbein College, now University. The cemetery was founded on land given to the Methodist Church in 1849 by Garrit Sharp, an abolitionist and early settler in the Westerville area.

Two years ago, local historian Don Foster decided to walk through the cemetery, something he hadn’t actually done before, much to his own surprise. He was a student at Otterbein and then retired from his role as registrar at the university. During his visit, Foster realized that he couldn’t read some of the gravestones. Time had taken its toll on the sandstone markers. Foster left the cemetery that day, but the visit didn’t really leave his mind.

Foster began working with Church of the Messiah historian and fellow Otterbein alumna Pam Allen to research the site and create a detailed burial record to clean up the cemetery.

“Cemeteries have a lot of history. Every stone holds a story, and in this case, it was stories about my church and the founding of my church,” said Allen.

“This cemetery holds all of this history and nobody really knows about it.”

Foster echoed Allen’s sentiments about this crucial local landmark.

“The site contains the graves of people who settled this area,” said Foster, “This cemetery is a bit forgotten, but these are the people who founded this City. We wanted to bring this cemetery back to life.”

One of the significant projects Foster and Allen completed was the installation of a new secondary marker at the grave of Garrit Sharp. Sharp and his family moved to the area in 1810, initially naming the land Sharp’s Settlement, which later became Westerville.

The Sharps were abolitionists and aided slaves seeking freedom via the Underground Railroad that passed through Westerville from Columbus to Sandusky. Three Sharp homes still stand in Westerville today.

During the course of restoration work, Foster decided the Olde Methodist Cemetery would be the perfect candidate for a Remarkable Ohio historical marker, a program managed by the Ohio History Connection (OHC). Applying for a historical marker is not an easy task. It took considerable research into first-hand accounts of the cemetery’s history.

Foster and Allen pored over every document they could find—old census data, marriage and death records, land deeds, Sanborn fire maps and articles from the Westerville Public Opinion, Westerville's earliest newspaper.

“Every sentence you write has to be proven. You

have to have sources for everything,” said Foster.

“The OHC doesn’t want second-hand information.

They want the original source.”

The duo’s dedication to the project paid off, as the cemetery was approved for a historical marker in 2025.

Many notable figures in Westerville’s history have a final resting place in the Olde Methodist Cemetery. Among them is Thomas Alexander, a mayor of Westerville, founding member of Blendon Masonic Lodge #339, businessman and dedicated abolitionist.

Artists Commemorate 250 Years of America In commemoration of America’s 250 anniversary, a multi-organization America250 Westerville Committee (the City of Westerville, Westerville Public Library, Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce, Otterbein University and the Westerville Historical Society) spearheaded a city wide mural program to tell Westerville’s undertold stories. The committee conducted a competitive selection process for 8 muralists to complete 12 murals across the City.

Here is a sneak peek at some of those murals and the artists behind them.

"DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY" Zach Cardoza From the sandy beaches of South Carolina to the rugged, forested hills of Vietnam, Black veterans from Westerville have been serving with excellence in the military since the Civil War, sometimes making the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of their nation. Cardoza’s mural represents three of those veterans: Capt. W.S. Thomas, Norman Wesley Tarpley and Jack Dempsey Foster.

“While artistic interpretation is always present, my primary goal was to depict these men as they truly were, their real faces, their character, their humanity. This mural was not only an honor to create, but a responsibility to ensure their presence is seen, and remembered.”

Zach Cardoza, a Westerville resident, is a professionally trained artist with over a decade of experience, rooted in classical fine art traditions and driven by curiosity around material and process.

"FOOTPRINTS ACROSS TIME" Jill Chronister The Westerville District Agricultural Society's fairground, established in 1871, found success after a $10,000 investment created the seasonal Westerville Tri-County Fair, featuring livestock, produce, horse racing, and entertainment like hot-air balloon rides.

In 1895, a new electric railway spurred the creation of The Minerva Amusement Park and Casino to boost ridership. It offered a lake, rides (including a roller coaster and ferris wheel), a zoological garden, and a grand casino with concerts and vaudeville, until its abrupt closure on July 27, 1902.

“Today, that same land thrives as a modern community, where neighbors connect on the very ground once alive with celebration. Through this work, the painting illustrates how places continually evolve, while the fundamental human longing to gather, rejoice, and feel a sense of belonging remains eternal and unchanging.”

Jill Chronister is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends realism and whimsy to create spaces of connection, curiosity and joy.

Based in Ashland, Ohio, she has developed a body of work with a particular focus on murals that celebrate community and storytelling.

"LILLIAN GOSSETT AND FAIRCHILD HALL" Yao Cheng Timothy Lee moved from New York to Ohio in 1807, buying land on Big Walnut Creek.

He established a grist mill, saw mill, woolen factory, and distillery. By 1816, he and neighbor Gideon Hart platted the village of Amalthea, now called the Central College area. Lee donated land for its first meetinghouse (now Blendon Central Cemetery) and aimed to found a classical school, building a chapel, boarding house, and schoolroom.

In 1841, he offered the land and buildings to the Marion Presbytery, and Central College opened the next year. The college and the Central College Presbyterian Church formed the village's core. Later, the Ohio Home for the Aged & Infirm Deaf opened in an old college building in 1896, becoming another community cornerstone focused on selfsufficiency for Deaf and Deaf-Blind people statewide.

“I wanted this mural painting to celebrate the story of Lillian Gossett and her contribution to Fairchild Hall.

As I was painting this artwork, I imagined a bountiful bouquet of peonies and roses swirling around her to show her dedication for this building and its community.”

Yao Cheng is a Columbus-based artist who fell in love with drawing at age four and has been creating art ever since. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and moved to Columbus and designed for Abercrombie & Fitch before founding her own art studio.

"GOOD CITIZENS" Carly Mitchell Westerville’s citizens have worked to make the world a better place throughout time.

These exceptional history makers inspire us on the anniversary of our country’s founding.

Westerville had a strong pre-Civil War Underground Railroad network led by figures such as William Hanby, George Stoner, and Thomas Alexander. To preserve both this history and the legacy of songwriter Benjamin Hanby, Dacia Shoemaker and William Fouse advocated for the preservation of the Hanby House, where Fouse, the first black graduate of Westerville Schools and Otterbein University, once lived.

Today, Westerville’s individuals and organizations continue to serve others. ““Good Citizens” honors the spirit of service and innovation that defines our community. This mural celebrates those who have worked, past and present, to make the world a better place. The artwork reflects unity, resilience, and care, inspired by the citizens, organizations, and changemakers who uplift others through compassion and empowerment.”

Carly Mitchell is a Columbus-based artist who loves turning everyday spaces into bright, joyful landmarks that celebrate community and connection. Her mural work blends bold design, vibrant color, and playful shapes to reflect the stories and energy of each place.

"MVSKOKE" Dexter Komakaru William Apueka (born ca. 1850s) and Taylor Chissoe (born. ca. 1855) arrived at Central College to study in the late 1870s as part of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation's Youth-in-the-States program. The program financed Muscogee students and sent them to white universities so the English fluency & civil service skills they gained there could become valuable tools in the Muscogee Nation’s resistance against US encroachment on Muscogee land, culture, and sovereignty. Following their education by the tribe (including here in Westerville) they ended up in leadership positions in the tribal town and in Muskogee governance.

“Native history is not a footnote to this nation’s story. It is the ground beneath it. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family. Meet at the Senior Center to travel by Senior Center bus to Westerville Central High School. We will go to dinner (on your own) before the show.
