The Power of Parks and Recreation

Westerville celebrates Parks and Recreation Month

July is Parks and Recreation Month, and this year’s theme is “The Power of Parks and Recreation,” which was assigned by the National Recreation and Parks Association. Throughout the month, the City will celebrate the many ways parks and recreational programs and activities provide opportunities for community members to unite, build relationships and maintain health.

The Power of Connection and Belonging

Westerville Parks and Recreation offers many opportunities to connect with family, friends and the community. With more than 2,000 classes and events offered yearly; 650 acres of parkland, 51 miles of trails, 4 facilities and 29 parks; vast nature areas and wetlands, Westerville truly has something for everyone.

“I have attended this particular class for many years. When the Community Center had to close in March of 2020, some of us decided to meet outside and walk together for an hour at the times we had already set aside for class. We thus had something to look forward to, friendly people to chat with (masked and distanced), Westerville's many great outdoor trails to enjoy and much-needed safe exercise. We did this every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the acute pandemic year and when the Community Center and our favorite class reopened, we continued to meet with our walking group year-round on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and we still do.

None of us really knew each other before and now we celebrate birthdays, support each other's joys and challenges, and acknowledge that our hours of activity begun in a health crisis have been an enormous blessing to us all. Thank you, Community Center, for providing vigorous activity in classes for all ages that have probably sparked more life-affirming relationships than ours.” - *Kay W.

*Some acronyms in the original quote have been spelled out for clarity.

The Power of Play

Westerville proudly offers space for all types of play in specially designed parks with playgrounds, sports fields and nature areas. Parks and Recreation playarea updates for the remainder of the year include the following:

Millstone Creek Park Playground and Nature Area

The Millstone Creek Park playground will tentatively reopen in August when the following construction plans are completed, weather permitting:

Demolition of the existing playground surface and select equipment

Installation of a new bonded rubber surface

Installation of refurbished playground equipment, furniture and accessories

Installation of drip irrigation equipment to feed new planters

Replacement of the existing wood bridge

Walnut Ridge Park Renovations

The renovation project at Walnut Ridge Park focuses on realigning Walnut Ridge Run and creating a wetland floodplain for the tributary along with a boardwalk. Additional updates include consolidation of the parking lot and reconstruction of the ballfields and basketball courts.

The shelter and playground will remain open for as long as possible during the park reconstruction. The project is estimated to be completed in the fall of 2026.

Visit www.Westerville.org/NewProjects for the latest Parks and Recreation project updates.

The Power of Community

A strong community provides a built-in support system that can help reduce stress and promote a healthier lifestyle. Along with the many events and classes for all ages offered through Westerville Parks and Recreation, the City and community partners offer a variety of opportunities to gather and foster relationships:

The Power of Nature

The City is dedicated to the protection of wetlands, floodplains, woodlots, ravines and other natural corridors to ensure the availability of wildlife habitat, water quality and public access for both enjoyment and education. The Urban Forestry Division within the Parks and Recreation Department maintains more than 15,000 street trees, 166 acres of designated greenways, 42 acres of wetlands and 31 acres of open water in the City.

“This is an amazing slice of nature in the middle of the suburbs. Once you walk down the pathway into it, it's like you're transported. There is a pond with a path that runs around it, multiple benches, a boardwalk portion over the marshes and there is usually a blue heron in yearly residence. It's such a peaceful place for nature sounds, so take out your earbuds.” - Emily T., referring to Boyer Nature Preserve

The Power of Well-Being

The recently renovated Community Center, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026, is now 145,000 square feet and houses state-of-the-art equipment and activities, programs and services for people of all ages with various interests. Staff members are committed to providing enhanced recreation and fitness experiences to meet patrons’ holistic wellness needs. Passes may be purchased annually, monthly and daily and are available for individuals and families. The new Westerville Parks and Recreation mobile application provides easy access to event and class listings, and conveniently connects patrons directly to the registration and payment portal.

“Several months ago, I began taking the Great Shapes classes and it has been such a phenomenal experience for me. Everyone in the afternoon class is very welcoming and Ellen is one of the best in terms of being encouraging and switching up the routines and music, so every class is a good workout. Often, I go in and think I’m too tired to work out and plan to do the bare minimum, but the energy in the room and music gets me moving. I am blown away, though not at all surprised, when someone tells me they’ve been in her classes for 10-20+ years. On the days I work out alongside her and others in the class, all of life seems easier and more joyful.” - Jackie W.

A New Rhythm in Westerville Inside Good

Vibes Winery's transformation

On a Friday night in Westerville, the sound of live music spills out into the street. Inside Good Vibes Winery, the warm, welcoming and artistic energy is unmistakable. At the center of it all is owner Tonjia Coverdale, whose recent journey into winemaking felt serendipitous.

Coverdale didn’t plan to buy a winery, at least not yet. After nearly three decades in the tech industry as a professor and executive, she imagined someday stepping into a lifestyle business rooted in community. A bookstore, a café, a charming storefront in a walkable town. But one afternoon while in the Uptown district, she wandered into Good Vibes Winery for the first time, and had a friendly conversation with then-owner, Jen Blaser. Shortly after, she discovered the business was for sale.

“It felt like the business chose me,” said Coverdale.

Rather than reinventing what was already there, Coverdale saw something worth amplifying. With more than a decade of community already built, her vision was simple: help more people experience it.

“The wine is delicious and locally-crafted, but the wine is not the vibes,” said Coverdale. “The people are the vibes.”

Today, Good Vibes Winery has evolved into an experience-driven destination centered around music, wellness and connection. Live music, already part of the winery’s DNA, with each wine named after a song, has expanded from just Fridays to also include Saturdays, with a full summer music series bringing artists in multiple nights a week. For Coverdale, a lifelong performing artist who grew up in New York City, music isn’t just entertainment, it’s a unifying force.

“Music creates a shared context,” said Coverdale. “It brings people together, eliminates division and makes everyone feel welcome.”

Beyond music, the calendar is filled with communitycentered events: sip-and-paint nights, sketching sessions, writing workshops, yoga and meditation through “Soul Sundays,” and even drum circles and sound baths. Coverdale’s goal is to create a space where people can show up exactly as they are. No dress code, no pressure, just presence.

Coverdale wants to break down the intimidation that can sometimes surround wineries. At Good Vibes, guests might arrive in sweatpants or dressed up for a night out, but either way, they belong.

“You are the vibe,” said Coverdale. “Every person who walks in contributes to the energy of the space.”

Behind the scenes, Coverdale is also blending her deep tech expertise into the business in a way that’s quietly innovative. She’s developing a system of AI-powered agents to handle operations like event inquiries, inventory forecasting, financial tracking and even marketing insights. By automating timeconsuming tasks, her team can stay focused on what matters most—creating meaningful, in-person experiences. She feels strongly that the goal with AI is to support people, not replace them.

"The wine is delicious and locally-crafted, but the wine is not the vibes. The people are the vibes."
- Jen Blaser

“Is this taking away from the six beautiful souls that I am working with now? No!,” said Coverdale. “At no point will AI take over the six jobs. It makes their jobs easier so we can be here with you and be more present.”

The impact is already being felt beyond Westerville. Guests from other Columbus-area suburbs are driving across town to experience the local, authentic energy of Good Vibes Winery.

“Guests have been telling me that some other Columbus-area suburbs are starting to feel sterile, losing local charm,” said Coverdale. “Some of these people are coming all the way to Westerville to listen to live music. So there is a demand. And I want to make Westerville the music capital of suburban Columbus.”

That same local-first philosophy carries into the wine itself. Every bottle is handcrafted on site; smallbatch artisanal style. Coverdale is often behind the scenes herself, blending and producing. It’s not mass-produced, and sometimes selections sell out, but that’s part of the charm.

“This is your neighbor making your wine,” said Coverdale.

For Coverdale, the most rewarding part of it all is the moment the door opens knowing each guest is making a choice to spend time in the space.

CONQUERING KILIMANJANRO

Westerville native climbs for a cause

In August 2022, Fernandez climbed 3,000+ feet elevation in Anchorage, Alaska, with a friend before his senior year of college.
“Are

we there yet!?”

The phrase cuts sharply through the noise of the radio while one parent sighs heavily and another passes a juice box to the back seat. It’s an interjection many people have heard more than once on a family vacation or road trip. For the Fernandez family, the phrase was uttered more times they could count.

James Fernandez, one of 11 children, remembers his family vacations fondly. His entire family frequently packed into a 15-passenger van to travel across the United States to many National Parks and even across the Canadian border to Banff. Those family vacations instilled many values in Fernandez; particularly a sense of adventure and a restless desire for new challenges.

Fernandez’s current expedition takes him across an ocean to Tanzania, where he will undertake a solo climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. This adventurous climb fulfills two goals for Fernandez—a lifelong dream of reaching Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit and giving back to the community.

Though he has dreamed of scaling the nearly 19,350-foot mountain since childhood, Fernandez didn’t start planning his climb until the beginning of 2026. After a few different career moves, he decided it was time for a big change; a change that would reinvigorate him. At 25 years old, Fernandez recognized that there may be no better time to live out his dream than now.

“Did I go wrong somewhere?,” asked Fernandez. “Everyone told me to follow these certain steps, but that just wasn’t realistic for me. My life wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I decided It was time to live out a lifelong dream that may inspire others.”

Reaching Mount Kilimanjaro’s peak requires a significant amount of training, both mentally and physically. Only 60% of people who attempt the climb make it to the summit. Fernandez is treating his training much like he does when he trains for a marathon with daily running and weightlifting. He also cut out caffeine and alcohol and has been focusing on staying hydrated to maintain a high level of physical fitness.

“I’ve always been someone who tries hard things,” said Fernandez. “You have to prepare mentally for something like this too. I have to train no matter what. If it’s raining, I am going to go on that run. It’ll be raining on that mountain too.”

"My life wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I decided It was time to live out a lifelong dream that may inspire others."
- James Fernandez

It was also important to Fernandez to use the undertaking as a chance to raise awareness and money for a cause that is close to heart—ending childhood hunger. He hopes to raise $19,431, Mount Kilimanjaro’s exact height in feet, for the Mid-Ohio Food Collective (MOFC).

“I’ve volunteered at MOFC. They have such an impact on people’s lives,” said Fernandez. “Food has always been a big thing for me. How people in our own country are still hungry is unthinkable to me. How can kids do well in school or sports or other things when they have to wonder where their next meal is coming from? It was an easy choice for me.”

Fernandez hopes to prove that with a dream, determination and a heart for service, anyone can conquer any mountain and inspire others to do the same. His climb is planned for late June 2026 and he is likely scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro at the time of this article’s publication.

You can contribute to James’ campaign by visiting Fundraise.Mofc.org/EndHunger and search his name in the “Find a Participant" section.

WFD Shares Tips to Stay Cool and Safe

As temperatures rise throughout the summer months, the Westerville Division of Fire (WFD) encourages residents to take simple but important precautions to stay safe in the heat. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to serious health risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, both of which can escalate quickly without proper care.

“One of the most effective ways to prevent heatrelated illness is to stay hydrated. Drinking water consistently throughout the day, even before you feel thirsty, helps regulate body temperature and maintain energy levels,” said Interim WFD Chief Josh Lester. “Avoid beverages with excessive caffeine or alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration. During periods of intense heat, it is especially important for children, older adults and those working outdoors to increase fluid intake.”

Residents are also advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, typically between late morning and early evening. If outdoor work or exercise is necessary, schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing can also help the body stay cool by reflecting heat and allowing for better airflow.

Recognizing the warning signs of heat-related illness is critical. Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps and fatigue. If you experience any of the previously mentioned symptoms, move to a cooler environment, drink water and rest immediately. Heat stroke is more severe and may include confusion, a lack of sweating despite high body temperature or loss of consciousness. Call 911 right away if heat stroke is suspected.

The WFD will also increase resources on emergency scenes during warmer months, including Box 15, a dedicated first responder rehabilitation unit that provides hydration and cooling services, along with other fire apparatus, to increase safety measures for all personnel.

The WFD also partners with LifeCare Alliance for a fan drive to ensure community members can receive a fan during hot months. If a community member needs a fan for cooling, they are encouraged to reach out to the LifeCare Alliance, call the Fan Hotline (614) 437-2870. The WFD is a donation drop off site for new fans at any of the fire house locations.

WFD also reminds residents to remain mindful of vulnerable populations and changing weather conditions. The WFD encourages everyone to check on their neighbors and family members during these hot months. By taking precautions and planning ahead, community members can enjoy a safe and healthy summer.

Summer Heat Safety Tips:

Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.

Avoid being outside during peak heat hours, if possible.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, lightcolored clothing.

Use sunscreen to prevent sunburn, which can affect the body’s ability to cool itself.

Check on neighbors, especially older adults or those without air conditioning.

Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

A Love Story, Served Daily

The heart behind Uptown Deli and Brew

In the heart of Westerville, Uptown Deli and Brew is more than just a place to grab a sandwich and a beer. It’s the result of a chance meeting that turned into a shared life, a growing collection of businesses and a deep investment in the surrounding community. Owners Tony Cabilovski and his partner Amy Cabilovski first met in early 2015, just steps from where their businesses now stand. At the time, Amy owned Edwin Loy Home, a boutique located across the street. One evening after closing up shop, she stopped into the deli for a beer. Mr. Cabilovski happened to be working that night, and the two struck up a conversation.

“Here we are 11 years later with two more boutiques and loads of adventures together," said Mr. Cabilovski. “That beer changed both of our lives. Best beer I’ve ever had.”

The couple has built not only a life together, but a vibrant business presence throughout Uptown. What started with one conversation has grown into multiple boutiques and ventures, each reflecting their shared creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

At Uptown Deli and Brew, that passion is evident in the love and attention they give to the quality of their beer and food.

“Many of our ingredients are imported from Europe, be it Italy, Spain or my family’s home country of Macedonia,” said Mr. Cabilovski. “Those ingredients can be tough to come by, but they really are worth the effort.”

Regulars rave about the cheese curds, which have developed something of a cult following. Made using a full-circle local process, the deli donates spent grain from its brewing operation to nearby dairy farmers, then purchases fresh curds back from them. Breaded and fried to perfection, they’re a must-try. The reuben sandwich is another bestseller, featuring house-corned beef layered with Swiss cheese, grilled sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing on rye. Meanwhile, the Paesano

sandwich—stacked high with Italian meats and fresh toppings on bread from local favorite Auddino’s Bakery—delivers bold, satisfying flavor. Even the house-made potato chips have a fanbase of their own, especially when paired with their addictive sour cream and onion dip. “It’s so good, we have to lock it up at night!,” Mr. Cabilovski said jokingly.

What truly sets the deli apart; however, goes beyond the menu. Tucked behind the deli is Temperance Row Brewing Co., the on-site brewery that nods to Westerville’s Prohibition-era roots, as the Cabilovskis intentionally “hid” the brewery behind the deli. The beers are thoughtfully crafted to complement the deli’s offerings, adding another layer to the experience.

The couple’s journey as business partners grew naturally from their shared interests and ambitions. While Mrs. Cabilovski was considering expanding her boutique into nearby Delaware, Ohio, the two decided to take that step together, launching additional concepts like Stone and Sparrow and, most recently, Little Sparrows, a baby and pet boutique located in the very space where they first met. Each new venture builds on their commitment to quality.

Looking ahead, the couple is exploring a potential expansion for Uptown Deli and Brew. While still in the early feasibility stages, the vision includes additional booth seating, flexible table arrangements for larger groups and possibly hosting private events. For customers, that means more room to gather and an even cozier atmosphere, especially during colder months when patio seating isn’t available.

“There are some fun things we want to do with the addition, but we first need the engineers to let us know if our ideas are possible,” said Mr. Cabilovski.

Through it all, Uptown Deli and Brew remains rooted in a simple moment of connection from years ago: a conversation sparked over a beer that continues to shape everything they create.

Education in Action

Local student leads battery recycling drive

At 18, Westerville South High School (WSHS) student Henry Whittington took action at the local level to address a global challenge. Whittington, a senior at WSHS during the 2025-26 school year, was also a participant in Global Scholars, a program from Columbus Council of World Affairs, offered in partnership with the Westerville City Schools District.

As part of the program, Whittington was assigned a project to address an issue that he could improve locally that would also have a global impact. After learning about the dangers of battery pollution in his Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science class, he thought a battery drive would be a great fit for the project.

“It was around Christmas time, so I thought people could just save their dead batteries and if enough people could do that and drop them off in a box, I could do the rest of it–counting, bagging, everything,” said Whittington. “The drive started right as school opened up at the beginning of the year.”

"I thought people could just save their dead batteries and if enough people could do that and drop them off in a box, I could do the rest of it–counting, bagging, everything."
- Henry Whittington

Whittington recognized that collection was only one part of the solution; education was equally vital. To help spread the word about the drive, he gave short presentations to fellow students in WSHS Ecology and Environmental Science classes, focusing on heavy metals, battery production, groundwater pollution and recycling. Whittington had previously contacted the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine where the batteries should go after the drive. The agency shared the location of the Westerville Electric Division’s (WED) battery recycling drop-off bins, and also donated chargers, which were used as incentives for the students who listened to his lessons throughout the campaign.

“I told teachers too, because I thought if teachers could tell the students, that's a much better way and everyone pays attention to the announcements,” said Whittington.

He placed a bright green drop-off box in the school’s front office, and began receiving discarded batteries from students as well as teachers and school administrators.

“Teachers brought in a lot more than I thought they would,” said Whittington. “I know that my AP Environmental Science teacher Aislynn Schmidley donated a lot. She donated every type–the big ones, the small ones, everything. It was really helpful.”

Through his personal efforts and support from WSHS students and staff, Whittington collected 4,500 batteries for recycling. After packaging them for proper disposal, he concluded his project by dropping off the batteries at the drop-off bins conveniently located in front of the WED building in the spring. By ensuring the proper disposal of the collected batteries, Whittington helped keep materials containing heavy metals from entering the landfill and potentially contaminating local groundwater.

Following the campaign, Whittington reflected upon his greatest lesson from his efforts–understanding the ripple effect of small actions.

“It's a lot easier to take action and make a change than I thought it would be. All it takes is a little bit of research and that can jumpstart something way bigger,” said Whittington. “The impact is just knowing that those batteries aren't going into our groundwater here. They're going to be resourced to something else. So, that's really the biggest impact is knowing that we did what we can."

Looking ahead, Whittington has plans to combine his passion for environmental science and history with law, and hopes to someday become an environmental lawyer.

This Must Be the Place

Birdie Books reimagines community in Uptown

Tucked into the heart of the Uptown district, Birdie Books may seem like just a bookstore, but it’s a carefully crafted experience that brings the people of Westerville back to something many didn’t realize they were missing.

Following a recent renovation, Birdie Books has expanded into a fully immersive space that blends a thoughtfully curated bookshop with a microbakery, coffee shop and full bar. But the physical transformation is only part of the story. At its core, Birdie Books is built on a deeper idea; the revival of the “third place.”

“It’s not home, it’s not work—it’s a space that the community needs as much as the space needs the community,” wrote Birdie Books owner Shari Russell in a recent newsletter.

Her philosophy is felt in every detail. From the handcrafted white oak front door made by a local Uptown woodworker, to the Ohio River Valley-made china used in the café, Birdie Books leans heavily into local sourcing and intentional design. The coffee program features beans from central Ohio’s One Line Coffee, known for its traceable, single-origin sourcing, while the wine list highlights family-owned vineyards focused on organic and biodynamic practices. Even the baked goods—pies, puddings and cookies—are made fresh in-house.

Inside the shop, every book is hand-selected by a team passionate about uncovering unique and meaningful titles. It’s a tactile, human approach to bookselling that feels increasingly rare. That sense of nostalgia is intentional.

Birdie Books, Russell says, is “built on a memory… of a Gen X kid who frankly misses the 20th century. It’s a nod to a time before constant digital distraction when coffee shops weren’t filled with laptops, albums were listened to from start to finish and conversations unfolded naturally.”

"It’s not home, it’s not work— it’s a space that the community needs as much as the space needs the community."
- Shari Russell

That desire for connection extends into the programming. Birdie Books regularly hosts poetry jams, book clubs, screen-free writing sessions, story time for children, cozy crafting events and author visits, which create consistent opportunities for people to gather, create and relax.

Customers have quickly embraced the space.

“Walking in feels like walking into a magical space,” said one Westerville resident. “It’s not just a bookstore, it’s an escape… a place that invites you to stop and stay awhile.”

Others highlight the love and care evident behind the layout and offerings, from the book displays to a thoughtfully designed children’s area that encourages early learning and imagination.

For Russell, Birdie Books is also a response to what she calls an “anti-social, anti-connected community culture.” Her goal is to create a space where independent businesses support one another and where people feel comfortable to take a seat, grab a coffee and a danish and leaf through a book (or four!) while having impromptu conversations with their neighbors.

That vision feels especially fitting as National Coffee Month approaches in August—a reminder of the role spaces like Birdie Books play in everyday life. Whether stopping in for a cup of coffee, a freshbaked treat or a new favorite book, visitors are invited to slow down and reconnect.

In a world that often prioritizes speed and convenience, Birdie Books offers something different; a third place rooted in community, expression and presence.

Investing in the Future: How Marzetti is Helping Shape

Westerville’s Next Generation

On a typical weekday morning, while her high school friends are settling into their first class, Vanessa B. arrives at The Marzetti Company—not for a tour, but for work. Dressed professionally and stepping into a corporate environment, she’s gaining something few high schoolers experience firsthand: real-world exposure to the expectations and rhythms of a professional career.

This hands-on experience is part of a multi-year partnership between Marzetti and Cristo Rey Columbus High School, a collaboration that will reach its seventh year in 2026. At the heart of the relationship is Cristo Rey’s nationally recognized work-study model, which allows students to earn a portion of their tuition by working in professional settings while completing their high school education.

For Marzetti, the partnership started with alignment in values.

“What originally drew us to Cristo Rey… was a shared belief in the power of education and opportunity,” a spokesperson for the Marzetti team shared. “Their innovative work-study model aligns closely with Marzetti’s commitment to nourishing growth and developing future leaders by giving students realworld experience and access to career pathways they might not otherwise have.”

And over time, that belief has only deepened.

“Over the past six years, what’s kept us committed is the impact we’ve seen, both in the students’ growth and in the meaningful relationships our associates have built as mentors,” said the representative.

Inside Marzetti, students are fully integrated into the workplace. They contribute to daily operations while learning how to communicate professionally, manage responsibilities and navigate expectations—skills that can’t always be replicated in a classroom.

Sometimes, the most meaningful growth shows up in small but powerful moments.

Marzetti leaders recalled a recurring experience where student interns meet with President and CEO Dave Ciesinski. At first, the students are quiet, unsure, even intimidated. But as the conversation unfolds, something shifts.

“They begin to open up, sharing their goals and asking thoughtful questions,” said the representative. “As the meeting goes on, there’s a noticeable boost in confidence. They’re speaking more freely, thinking bigger and seeing new possibilities for their future.”

Moments like these are a reminder that access and encouragement can change how young people see themselves, and what they believe is possible.

The impact isn’t just felt by students. Inside Marzetti, the partnership has created a ripple effect across the team.

“Employees who mentor students gain valuable leadership and coaching experience, but beyond that, the program brings a strong sense of purpose and truly energizes our workplace,” said the representative.

Mentors often find themselves remembering what it felt like to be at the beginning of their own careers. Across departments, there’s a shared commitment to making the experience meaningful.

“Together, we are not just providing education or work experience, but building futures and strengthening our community one young leader at a time.”

That commitment extends beyond Cristo Rey. Marzetti continues to invest in the broader Westerville community through partnerships focused on nutrition, education and workforce readiness.

“We focus on improving access to nutritious meals, advancing health outcomes, increasing workforce readiness and furthering economic stability,” said the representative.

Through organizations like the Westerville Education Foundation, Jobs for America’s Graduates and the Children’s Hunger Alliance, Marzetti supports initiatives ranging from school-based food pantries to weekend meal programs while also donating products to food banks across multiple states.

For students and their families, the impact is tangible. The financial support makes education more accessible, while the professional experience builds confidence and direction. For the community, it represents a local company actively shaping the future of its workforce.

As the partnership continues to grow, it stands as a reminder that meaningful impact doesn’t always happen in the spotlight. Often, it happens in quiet conversations, first opportunities and the steady investment in helping young people see and step into their potential.

Best Practices to Avoid Utility Scams

The City of Westerville has received reports concerning fraudulent telephone calls targeting utility customers. Fraudulent callers may claim to be affiliated with general Utility Billing or the Electric Division while attempting to obtain personal data or demanding immediate payment. However, the City of Westerville does not request credit card details over the phone.

The Westerville Division of Police (WPD) reminds community members to treat any unexpected contact requiring financial information as suspicious. Please also remember the following tips when conducting business over the phone:

Reputable organizations will not require advance payments. Even if you play the lottery or enter sweepstakes, be cautious if contacted. Make sure you understand the protocol of how winnings would be collected in the games you play.

Ask any unknown callers for specific information, including business name, mailing address, phone number, website and federal tax identification information. Then, contact the Better Business Bureau to confirm their existence and view any potential complaints.

Talk to other adult members in your family about any contacts made from unknown sources, particularly requesting payments or financial information.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you receive a suspicious call, email or letter, please contact the WPD non-emergency line at (614) 882-7444. Visit the Scam Awareness page of the WPD website at www.Westerville.org/Police for more information.

My favorite flavor is probably butter pecan. Whit's is my favorite uptown shop and I prefer to try their flavor of the day when I visit.

GIS Analyst Information Technology

I love cookie dough ice cream, but lately I have been splurging on Dairy Queen's Fruity Pebbles shake.

Web Administrator Community Affairs/Information Technology

When I was in preschool, my class took a field trip to Graeter's Ice Cream and I chose mint chocolate chip, because it was green. Decades later, Graeter's mint chocolate chip is still my favorite ice cream, and green is still my favorite color.

Executive Administrative Assistant City Manager’s Office

Ice cream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. My favorite ice cream is vanilla, but during recent visits to the state of Maine I discovered blueberry ice cream and totally loved it! It's hard to find locally, but walking past Whit's in April, I saw their calendar and blueberry was the flavor of the day! I was excited and marked my calendar for that day to make sure to get a cup of the blueberry ice cream. So vanilla is my favorite but every time I can get a taste of blueberry ice cream, I do.
