inside the guide About This Guide Program & Facility The City of Waterloo’s Community, Culture & Recreation Services produces the Program & Activities Guide four times a year, in Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

The Guide promotes leisure, arts, culture and sports opportunities offered by the City, the Region, community organizations and local businesses.

There is something for all ages and abilities-preschoolers, children, youth, adults, seniors and families.

From the newest classes to the popular favourites, the guide brings you the best programs in active living, wellness, aquatic leadership and lessons, leisure pursuits, and personal development.

INTERNET REGISTRATION

We will begin accepting Internet registration at 7 a.m. on the specified registration dates.

What do I need?

All you need is your Family Personal Identification Number (PIN) and Client Numbers (for each family member). If you have not registered before, please call the registration desk at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex at 519-886-1177. We can set up your account and provide you with the information that you need to use ExpressReg. Due to the high volume of calls we ask that you call prior to the registration date to set up your account.

Register online— you’ll always be first in line!

Forgot Your Numbers?

If you have an account with us and have provided your email address, you can go to the ExpressReg website, My Account, and follow the instructions to have your numbers emailed to you.

Quick and easy steps to register:

1. Go to http://expressreg.waterloo.ca HINT: it is a good idea to have a couple of choices of programs that you would like to register for, if your first choice is full. This will make your registration process quicker.

2. Search for programs on the Activities tab and when you find the desired course, click on the ADD button to put that program into your basket. HINT: the fastest way to locate a program is by entering the Course Number.

3. If the selected course is full, you may place the selected client on the waitlist by clicking on the WAITLIST button.

4. If there is no ADD button, it means that particular course is not available for Internet registration at this time or the course is full.

5. You will be directed to login with your Client Number and Family PIN Number.

6. You may move back and forth between My Basket and the Activities screen using the tabs at the top of the page.

7. When you have finished, proceed to GO TO CHECKOUT to make a payment.

NOTE: Exiting the system before selecting GO TO CHECKOUT will cancel all requested waitlists during this transaction.

8. If you were not able to successfully register in a course, but have placed clients on your account on a waitlist, you must select the GO TO CHECKOUT option to complete your transaction.

Confirmation & Receipts:

** Please print the on-line receipt once your payment has been successfully completed. An additional copy of your transaction WILL NOT be mailed to you.

If you are registering for Camps, you will also be required to print the Parent Information Package at the time of registration. If you are unable to print, please contact us.

IMPORTANT: all online registrations must be paid for in full using a valid MasterCard, Visa or American Express credit card. Any outstanding balance on your account (including facility booking balances) must also be paid at this time.

Any credits on your account will automatically be applied to total balance due.

A registration fee of 75¢ will be applied to each Expressreg Registration.

Step-by-step guide for Touch Tone Telephone Registration

Please note: All payments MUST be complete and accepted before disconnecting, or all registrations will be void.

This service allows you to register, check course availability and make payments from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week.

In order to use this service you will require a Family PIN and Client Number for each family member.

You will also require a credit card in order to complete your payment.

1.

Review and select the courses for which you would like to register from the Program & Activities Guide.

2.

Call 519-747-8585 and listen closely as the automated system leads you through the process with voice prompts.

3.

If you have trouble using the system, you will be prompted to dial “0” to reach a customer service representative (between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.).

4.

When you are registering, the system will prompt you to input the following information: CLIENT NUMBER, FAMILY PIN, the CLIENT NUMBER of the person you are registering, and the appropriate COURSE NUMBER.

5.

Once you are finished registering, the system will ask you for payment. You will need to enter your credit card number (VISA, MasterCard or American Express) followed by the expiry date. A registration fee of 75¢ will be applied to each Touch Tone Telephone Registration.

6.

You will receive a confirmation in the mail within 7 to 10 business days.

If you do not wish to pay for registration with a credit card over the phone or via internet, you may pay in person prior to registration by leaving a “credit on your file”. Please Note: this DOES NOT reserve a spot in classes/programs until you register.

LEISURE SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS

Leisure Support Volunteers are available for 1:1 assistance to provide physical assistance and/or support at any City of Kitchener or City of Waterloo Community, Culture & Recreation Services programs.

Information packages are available at the Swimplex Reception. All arrangements are made through the City of Kitchener at 519-741-2226.

RETURNED (NSF) CHEQUES

If classes are unexpectedly cancelled, announcements will be made online and on most local radio stations. Email notifications will be sent to those who have agreed to receive email communication.

Payments made by cheques that are not accepted by the bank must be replaced immediately upon notification by the City of Waterloo. An administrative fee of $25.00 will be charged for each returned cheque.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS

Classes may be cancelled in the event of insufficient registration.

We reserve the right to change, cancel or alter any class times or instructors if necessary. You will be contacted in the event of a cancellation.

Recreation programs may qualify for the Child Fitness Tax Credit. Please review your eligibility by visiting the Canada Revenue Agency website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/fitness

FEE ASSISTANCE LEISURE ACCESS CARD

Fee assistance is available to Waterloo residents with low income participating in City of Waterloo programs. To apply you must submit a completed application form prior to registration. Once approved you will receive a Leisure Access Card to show at time of registration to verify the fee assistance payment.

Applications are available at all City of Waterloo recreation facilities or online at www.waterloo.ca/feeassistance For more information, please call the Fee Assistance Administrator at 519-885-1220 x225.

WAITLISTS

If your class of choice is full and you do not have any other choices, you will have the option of being placed on a waitlist. We will contact you if space becomes available before the second lesson/camp start date. Due to time restrictions as program dates approach, you may only be given 24 hours to respond to our notification of availability.

Think outside the box in this “sculptacular” studio! Sculpt animals and imaginary creatures using Crayola Model Magic clay; create landscape sculptures out of natural materials like rocks, twigs, and leaves; invent creative vehicles out of recycled materials; and bring your sculptures to life using stop-motion animation techniques.

Still Life Drawing with Steve Lavigne THURS | FEB 3 – MAR 10 | 6 – 9 PM $130 + HST / 6 WEEKS

Draw, sketch, shade, and blend. Create still life arrangements using objects of your choosing and render them in full detail. Experiment with a variety of dry media including graphite, conte, and charcoal.

This introduction to drawing course includes demonstrations of techniques for shading, blending and composition, and slide presentations outlining the history of still life.

Shadow Boxes with Karoline Varin-Jarkowski TUES | OCT 26 | 6 - 9 PM

Participants will explore the process of working with mixed media to create a 3 dimensional shadow box assemblage from man-made and natural found objects. History of assemblage, cohesive composition, antiquing and technical considerations will be discussed and approached.

Visual Journaling with Karoline Varin-Jarkowski SAT | NOV 13 | 10 AM – 1 PM

This is a workshop for creative minds interested in the integration of the written and the visual. Participants will work with various paper media, drawing, collage, printing, image transfers and texts, to develop a personal journal/artist book.

Japanese Watercolour with Kate Carder-Thompson TUES | NOV 23 | 6 - 9 PM

This workshop will introduce students to sumi-e and suibokugastyle painting techniques. We will practice different brushwork styles and types of mark making while creating several natureinspired paintings.

Abstract Collage with Steve Lavigne SAT | FEB 12 | 10 AM – 1 PM

Participants will explore the endless possibilities of abstraction while being introduced to the history of “cut and paste.” Cut, tear, fold, and layer various types of paper to create an abstract composition.

Contemporary Quilting with Kate Carder-Thompson TUES | FEB 22 | 6 - 9 PM

Look to examples of contemporary North American quilting for inspiration to create a spontaneous quilt block using new and “upcycled” fabrics. Discuss new contexts for quilting within the current art scene, and complete at least one block during the workshop (but be inspired for it to grow into a much larger project!) Basic sewing skills required, own sewing machine encouraged.

Organic Soap Making

with Karin Kliewer of Little City Farm SAT | MAR 12 | 10 AM – 1 PM

Learn the simple art of traditional cold-process soap making, to create beautiful, natural handmade soaps. Participants will be walked through all the steps of making their own coldprocess soap using organic herbs, lye, and basic essential oils.

Participants required to bring in a few of their own household items and materials.

Arts & Culture Dance Craze JOIN IN OUR RECREATIONAL CO-ED DANCE CLASSES FOR CHILDREN HELD AT THE WATERLOO MEMORIAL RECREATION COMPLEX! Our recreational co-ed dance classes are designed to introduce children to various dance forms in a fun and creative atmosphere.

Classes will be held in the dance studio, room 101.

Fee Assistance available to Waterloo residents.

Applications are available at City of Waterloo recreation facilities and online and must be submitted prior to registration for approval.

Your instructor will hand out theme day information on the first day of class.

All classes will host an Open House on the last class for friends and family to attend.

To enter in this level the participant needs to have completed Salamander and must be 3 to 5 years of age. Preschoolers will work on unassisted front and back glides with and without kicking. Learning also focuses on good judgement in, on and around the water, and entries and floats in deep water and working on a 2m front swim. This program meets criteria for Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

To enter in this level the participant needs to have completed Sunfish and be 3 to 5 years of age. Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims to 5m. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skill in the water.

This program meets criteria for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

Ranger Patrol In order to enter Ranger Patrol, participants must have completed Swim Kids 9 and be 5 to 15 years of age. Participants must be able to treat partially and completely obstructed airway, tread water for 2 1/2 minutes, 15 metre sculling , 25 metre breaststroke, 75 metre of both front and back crawl, swim 200 metres continually and 100 metres in 3 minutes.

Private Lessons Private and Semi private lesson registrations must be done in person. If your child needs extra attention on a certain skill then privates are for you.

The minimum age is 3 years old and all classes are 30 minutes in length. You must request in increments of 3 lessons and indicate the level you wish to register for. Semi private lesson forms must be submitted together and it is your responsibility to find the other participant. To ensure quality lessons, we can only provide semi private lessons to participants who are in the same level or one level apart. Please note the cost of semi private lessons is based per registrant. A new report card is given out for participants who register for 6 or 9 lessons with the same instructor. Missed lessons will not be refunded or rescheduled without a doctors note.

Must be age 16 or older or accompanied by an adult (maximum 2 children per 1 adult). Swirlpool is open all swim times unless otherwise noted. During lane swim time the swirlpool is open for adults only. Swim lessons may be taught at this time.

Takes place in deep end unless otherwise noted. Deep Water Belts are available. Customers MUST circle swim.

In Jackie Chan’s latest Karate Kid movie there were scenes of Wudang kung fu and the temples such as Purple Heaven Temple, the South Cliffs and the Golden Peak.

Wudang Internal Kung Fu has the characteristics of overcoming toughness with flexability, hardness with softness & movement with stillness. Wudang Kung Fu not only provides the function of body-strengthening & self-defense but can also preserve ones inner energy.

Excessive Noise Please keep the noise down!

The City of Waterloo’s noise by-law restricts people from making noise that disturbs the public.

Examples of prohibited noise include excessive dog barking, loud stereos or musical instruments, and construction equipment operated before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m. or on Sundays and statutory holidays.

In certain circumstances, by-law officers can use handheld meters to measure noise and assess if it’s exceeding the set decibel level.

Charges may be laid if the by-law is violated.

Overnight Parking on City Streets Overnight parking on City streets is prohibited year round. Please remember, vehicles cannot be parked on City streets in Waterloo between 2:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. (year round). Every household within the City of Waterloo will be allowed a maximum of eighteen exemptions per year.

Exemptions for Visitors Exemptions are for visitors’ vehicles and/or if there are extenuating circumstances that do not permit household vehicles access to their driveways. Exemptions may be denied at the discretion of the City should road maintenance and/or snow removal be required. All households must register any vehicle that will be parked on a City street between the hours of 2:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
