LETTER TO RESIDENTS Welcome to spring! It’s nice to enjoy some warmer weather, increased sunlight and see the trees and flowers starting to bloom.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, we continue to persevere and adapt. We are hopeful we can continue to open facilities and maintain programming. We ask our customers to work with us to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by following the guidelines provided by Region of Waterloo Public Health – practices include mandatory vaccination to enter sports and recreation facilities, wearing a mask, staying home when you’re feeling ill, increased and proper handwashing, and maintaining a two-metre physical distance from others. Waterloo residents continue to do a tremendous job adapting to new procedures and rules, and being patient and resilient.

The City of Waterloo recreation services team’s approach is to reopen facilities and reactivate programs as the province, regional public health, and facility resources permits. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to open up slowly and safely.

We are looking forward to offering a variety of options for recreation this spring. The program information provided in this guide is dependent on direction from the provincial government and Region of Waterloo Public Health, and is subject to change. We encourage you to visit ActiveWaterloo online for a complete list of all recreation programs for spring 2022. We will communicate changes or additions to protocols and practices through a variety of channels including the City of Waterloo’s website and social media channels, along with emails, phone calls, and notices on ActiveWaterloo.

Please visit www.waterloo.ca and our social media channels for the most up to date information on facility schedules and program offerings. Recreation customers are also encouraged to check ActiveWaterloo and Waterloo’s Own PickupHub for program offerings as they become available.

We are also excited to share the new spaces at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex with the community throughout 2022. New areas include the Community Pavilion (a home for our older adult programming), the Civic Front (where an updated lobby, customer service and café welcome customers and an activity court provides more recreation space), and the Hauser Fitness Core (two fitness studios and a walking track).

We look forward to providing safe and enjoyable recreation services this spring.

Fee assistance is available to Waterloo residents with low income who wish to participate in City of Waterloo recreation programs or affiliated arts, culture or minor sport programs. You must confirm your eligibility prior to registration. Applications are available at City of Waterloo recreation facilities and online at waterloo.ca/feeassistance For information, call 519-747-8512.

LEISURE SUPPORT SERVICES

The cities of Waterloo and Kitchener are happy to assist those who require accommodations/ support in order to participate in municipal programs.

One to one support is available through a new application process.

Individuals seeking inclusion support in our recreation programs, including camps, require an inclusion membership. To get your inclusion membership, please fill out our online participant information form, which must be completed before you register for support.

To request inclusion support in a program follow these 3 easy steps: 1) Obtain an inclusion membership – fill out the online form at kitchener.ca/leisuresupport 2) Register for inclusion support 3) Register for the program you are requesting support for. Be sure to match the support program with recreation program.

PROGRAM CANCELLATIONS

Programs and individual program dates may be cancelled due to insufficient registration or other circumstances. You will be contacted if your program or program date is cancelled and full or prorated refunds will be provided. An administrative fee will not apply.

EMERGENCY CLOSURES

Announcements will be made online and on local radio stations in the event of an unexpected class cancellation. Email notification may be provided to those who subscribe to email communication.

PROGRAM TRANSFERS

Program transfers may be requested if: 1) made prior to the withdrawal deadline, 2) space exists in the alternate program and both programs are within the same program session.

Our policies on withdrawals and refunds have changed. Please review carefully before registering.

WITHDRAWALS

Withdrawals may be done if requested before the withdrawal deadline by contacting customer service at 519-886-1177.

WITHDRAWAL DEADLINES

To receive either a refund or credit on account, withdrawal requests must be made as follows: single day program • 14 calendar days prior to the program date camp programs • 14 calendar days prior to first program date registered weekly program • prior to the third class adult leagues • teams - prior to communication of game schedule • free agents - prior to first game REFUND POLICY

Refunds are pro-rated and subject to an administrative fee of 10%.

Cheque refunds of $25 or less may only be available as a credit on account.

CREDIT POLICY

Credits on account are pro-rated and subject to an administrative fee of 10%. Credits can be used for any City of Waterloo facility rental, program registration, Fitpass, or pay as you play fee. Credits are not transferable to another customer.

IF YOU KNOW THE COURSE NAME

FILTERS

Type the program name or key words you are looking for into the Activity page search box. (i.e. Yoga, Splash 2, etc.)

Filters are another great search tool. Easily narrow down program results by adding filters including location, days of the week, start dates and start times.

JUST BROWSING?

Narrow your results by selecting a category from the Activities Tab. Categories are great for when you don’t know the program name, or want to see all that is offered in one area! You can also search by age categories such as Preschool or Adult.

WISH LIST

Use this feature to save your preferred programs before registration opens. Click on the button to the right of every program to add to your wish list.

On registration day, go right to Manage Wish List from My Account and register – no need to search again.

An explorer hat will be given to each child and each week a craft will be completed to attach to their hat. There is a maximum of two children per adult. Each child must register. Bring LEGO, action figures and toys to life in your very own stop motion animation blockbuster workshop. Use our equipment and your props! Under the guidance of a master filmmaker, young filmmakers learn how to storyboard, develop a script, create camera angles, edit, add special effects, music and titles. By the end of the workshop, young filmmakers will have created a blockbuster worthy of the next Oscar. Offered in cooperation with Film Camp in a Box.

Music makes life better. This introductory course is designed for children 5-8 years old interested in learning how to play the ukulele. Ukulele Kids classes are based on the enjoyment of music through playing and singing. Repertoire that spans the decades brings an understanding of various forms and styles of music.

Ed-UKE-ators incorporate theoretical concepts as they appear in the songs being learned. As singing is an important part of each class, students learn to be more expressive which leads to more self-confidence and creativity as classes progress. Ukuleles may be rented on a weekly basis or purchased at time of registration. This program is offered in cooperation with Ukulele Kids.

ROOT CODING ROBOT (5-8Y)

The Root® coding robot delivers real-world coding experience suitable for any expertise, from pre-readers to advanced coders. Use projects with the Root® coding robot to capture your child’s attention by programming it to move, light-up, flash difference colours or even draw shapes! This class is offered in cooperation with Stemotics.

VEX IQ ROBOT (9-14Y)

VEX IQ is a plastic snap-together construction system tailored for elementary and middle school students to encourage STEM learning. VEX IQ robots can be driven immediately using the handheld VEX controller and builtin programs. VEX IQ sensors, including a colour sensor, gyroscope, potentiometer, allow for advanced robots and teaching opportunities. Robots can be programmed on the LCD or with a computer. This program is offered in cooperation with Stemotics Inc.

FULL DAY CAMPS DAY CAMP: EVOLVE SKATEBOARD & SCOOOTER (6-14Y)

Evolve’s Skateboard and Scooter Camp focuses on improving campers fundamental and physical skills like balance and coordination, mastering tricks, and challenging themselves to learn and find their own style. Each camper will receive personalized instruction and work side-by-side with qualified coaches on their scootering and skateboarding skills. Campers will also participate in traditional camp programming and other daily sports for a well-rounded summer experience. Campers will bring their own scooter or skateboard, helmet, elbow and knee pads, wrist guards, and lunches, snacks and water.

A two-week program designed to teach specific advanced skills for the elite hockey and ringette player. Skaters will have well established advanced skating skills and elite edgework. This energizing Zumba class is perfect for girls aged 8-14.

KARATE (4-6Y)

This beginner karate program is taught by a black belt Instructor who will teach self-defense training for boys and girls. Participants will learn basic stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks as well as good balance, co-ordination, strength and flexibility. The goal is to help the student become focused not only on physical aspects of karate and self-defense, but to become a well-rounded individual by teaching discipline and self-confidence.

Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport. This program is suitable for swimmers who have completed Waterloo Splash 11/Teen 4 or have taken a break from traditional swim lessons.

BRONZE MEDALLION/EMERGENCY FIRST AID/CPR B (13Y+)

This leadership level challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness are the four components of water rescue that form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Prerequisite: Must be 13 years of age by the first day of the course or have successfully completed the Bronze Star certification.

Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities.

LSS ASSISTANT INSTRUCTORS (14Y+)

Through classroom learning, in-water practice and volunteer scheduled hours, the Lifesaving Society’s assistant instructor course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes.

This course provides an introduction to swimming instruction and some of the key competencies required for successful teaching. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching as they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. The trainer will make arrangements on the first day of the course to set up volunteer hours. Prerequisites: Must be 14 years of age as of the first day of the course and have a current Bronze Cross certification or higher.

LSS INSTRUCTORS & SWIM INSTRUCTORS COURSE (15Y+)

The last step in becoming a fully certified swimming instructor with the ability to be employed by the City of Waterloo! Learn to instruct the LSS program from parent and tot up to the leadership program including Bronze Medallion and Cross. Entry requirements: Current Bronze Cross or NL award within 2 years.

Assistant Instructors Course would be considered an asset. Must be 15 years of age by the first day of course.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD (15Y+)

National Lifeguard (NL) is the highest lifeguard training award in the country and is the basic certification required to lifeguard as recognized by the Ontario Health Act. The course emphasizes teamwork, leadership, emergency procedures and accident prevention. Candidates must bring their own pocket mask and whistle by day two of the course. Pocket

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD RECERT (15Y+)

This recert tests skills attained during the NL course.

LSS STANDARD FIRST AID & CPR C RECERT (13Y+)

Note: it is suggested that participants sign up for this course with a person they feel comfortable performing first aid scenarios on. This course is subject to change due to WSIB direction and regulation.

LSS Standard First Aid and CPR C provide comprehensive training and cover in-depth understanding of legal aspects, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burn and medical emergencies.

This course is approved by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Book: First Aid Student Manual (please bring with you). Please note: Standard First Aid holders may recertify Lifesaving Society SFA certification just once in a Lifesaving Society SFA recertification course.

To renew SFA certifications subsequently, award holders must repeat the full SFA course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertification’s and original

YOUTH LEADERSHIP

Does your child want to volunteer at camp this summer? The YLDP is a mandatory program for all camp volunteers. This counts as high school community service hours if the participant is currently enrolled in high school.

This exciting program teaches participants leadership skills, with an emphasis on the skills required to be a future camp counsellor. Topics include communication, teamwork, program planning, leading activities, child development, resume writing and more. Past YLDP participants expand on topics from the Year 1 program and increase their leadership skills during training.

Participants learn in a hands-on environment, which allows them to put their new skills in action during a mandatory two-week camp placement at one of the City of Waterloo summer camps (does not include contract camps).

Each participant receives leadership training, 2-week camp placement, manual, T-shirt, and appreciation party.

The appreciation party is held Wednesday, August 24 from 6-8 p.m.

Please fill out the online consent form immediately after you have registered. Volunteers may not receive their first or second choice and must be flexible.

Did you enjoy volunteering at camp as a YLDP and are looking for your next challenge? Year 3 participants expand on their YLDP knowledge with increased leadership and responsibility.

You will join summer camp leader training in June and receive advanced training in group behaviour management, conflict de-escalation, interview skills and learn how to take initiative at camp. After your Year 3 training you will participate in a three week placement at several of our City of Waterloo summer camps.

Volunteer hours will begin July 4.

Participants must have the ability to get to all of our camp facilities (Albert McCormick Community Centre, RIM Park and the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex) as placement and training locations will vary in June and July. An exact schedule will be provided in late May. Toward the end of your volunteer placement you will have the opportunity to interview for a position as a summer camp leader for August 2022 (interviews will be held July 22).

Included in your registration fee is a Standard First Aid and CPR C with AED course and a HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development certification course.

You will also receive your own fanny pack, pocket mask, gloves and goggles to be used throughout your placement.

100% attendance is required during training dates.

SWIM LESSONS LET’S GET STARTED!

The most important step is to make sure your child is placed in the right swim level. Staff reserve the right to move a child to a different level if a class is too challenging, so it’s best to get it right before classes start.

If your child requires one to one support in our group lessons, please call the inclusion coordinator up to 3 weeks in advance to complete a membership registration, 519-741-2200 ext. 7229. Volunteers are subject to availability.

If you’re uncertain what level your child should be in, follow the recommendations from the child’s last progress report card, and review the detailed standards of performance for each level. Ask for details at Customer Service.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Requests for specific instructors are considered, however we are unable to guarantee all requests.

Registrations are accepted up to the start of the third lesson.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR SWIM EXPERIENCE

Lockers, showers and change rooms are available for use. Please leave valuables at home and bring a lock to secure your belongings. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Shower with soap and water before your swim lesson.

Footwear is not permitted on the pool deck. Be prepared to go barefoot, or purchase reusable shoe covers at the customer service desk for 75¢.

Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear watertight elastic pants or specially designed disposable swimming diapers, available at the customer service desk for $2.00.

Do not send a child to lessons if they are not feeling well. Pool fouling affects all lessons. If a pool fouling happens, lessons are conducted on the pool deck instead of in the water. Refunds/credits are not given for pool foulings.

Entry and other protocols are subject to change.

The upper pool gallery is open for spectators. Physical distancing standards of 2m applies.

There will be no Feedback Day as lessons are 6 weeks in total. A written progress report is provided in the last lesson and will identify the next recommended swim level. Badges may be purchased at the customer service desk for all Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels.

Photography or videotaping is not permitted on the last day of lessons for the winter session. The use of cell phones and PDAs is strictly prohibited in City of Waterloo recreation facility change rooms, washrooms, pool decks and gallery.

In the event of bad weather, listen to local radio stations in case the program has been cancelled unexpectedly. We are unable to make up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures, but will credit the value of the missed class.

This is an advanced level for 2–5 year-olds. They'll have fun jumping into the water and getting out without assistance. They learn to hold their breath and open their eyes underwater to recover an object from the bottom. Mastering front and back floats in "starfish" and "pencil" positions and kicking on front and back provide the building blocks for swimming stroke development in the Preschool program. Note: one parent per child may attend these lessons. Ratio 1:5.

PARENT & BABY WATERFIT (3M-3Y)

This registered waterfit program is designed for the busy parent who finds it difficult to exercise while watching children. Swimmers are positioned in the water with their baby/preschooler to experience the best possible workout using water resistance. Each participant must provide a floatation seat for their child to sit in during the class. Due to age prerequisites you must register your child for this 45 minute shallow water fit program. Max. 5.

PRESCHOOL A (3-5Y)

In this level, preschoolers develop a foundation of water skills while having fun in the pool. They learn to get in and out of the water. Instructors help swimmers jump into chest deep water. Preschoolers are introduced to lifejacket skills on their front and back. They get their face wet and blow bubbles under water. Preschoolers become comfortable performing front and back floats unassisted. Ratio 1:4.

PRESCHOOL B (3-5Y)

Preschoolers jump into chest-deep water by themselves, and get in and get out wearing a personal floatation device. They submerge and exhale underwater.

They glide on their front and back while kicking all by themselves. Ratio 1:4.

PRESCHOOL C (3-5Y)

Youngsters try both a jump and a side roll into deep

water while wearing a personal floatation device. They recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water.

They work on kicking and gliding through the water on front and back unassisted for longer distances. Ratio 1:4.

PRESCHOOL D (3-5Y)

Preschoolers learn independent jumps into deep water and to get out by themselves. They open their eyes under water and recover objects from chest-deep water. They build endurance by completing 5m swims while doing front crawl, front glide with kick and kicking on their side. Ratio 1:4.

PRESCHOOL E (3-5Y)

Advanced preschoolers build on deep water skills by demonstrating a forward roll entry while wearing a personal floatation device. They develop endurance by holding their breath under water for up to 10 seconds.

Interval training and whip kick is introduced at this level.

CHILD/YOUTH 7-12 BEGINNERS (7-12Y)

This is an introductory class for children aged 7 to 12 with little or no experience in the water. Participants learn head and face submersion, front/back and side swims with an introduction to surface support.

Participants repeat this level until the instructor feels they are ready for Waterloo Splash 3. Ratio 1:4.

WATERLOO SPLASH 1 (5-12Y)

These beginners jump into chest deep water all by themselves. They learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back. Ratio 1:4.

WATERLOO SPLASH 2 (5-12Y)

Swimmers develop swimming skills by learning whip kick as well as front and back crawl. They tread water for 30-45 sec. and interval training repetitions are increased (4x9m). Ratio 1:4. .

WATERLOO SPLASH 4 (5-12Y)

Swimmers learn in-water handstands and work towards the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard®: roll into deep water, tread 45-60 sec. and swim 25-50m. They improve the front crawl, back crawl and whip kick and transitions from front to back flutter kick. Ratio 1:5.

WATERLOO SPLASH 5 (5-12Y)

These junior swimmers dive into deep water and perform in-water front somersaults. They work on increasing their distance and efficiency in front crawl, back crawl and whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15m. Ratio 1:5.

Intermediate swimmers increase efficiency in front crawl, back crawl, and whip kick. They are introduced to a 5m under water swim and breaststroke arms learning breath control. Endurance is further increased by interval training (4x25m) and front crawl sprints (over 25m). Ratio 1:5.

They develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25m. They swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke, and they complete a 300m workout. Ratio 1:5.

Did you know...

It takes about four sessions for a swimmer to master the skills required to progress to the next level of swimming lessons.

• Advancing your child before they’re ready can cause undue stress, especially if they aren’t ready to master new, challenging skills.

• All requirements must be checked off before a swimmer moves up a level.

• If your child is repeating a session, share their previous report card with the swim instructor so they can focus on areas of improvement.

Swimming is a life-long skill. Giving your child time to learn this skill benefits everyone.

Swimmers continue stroke development with 50m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

Lifesaving sport skills include a 25m obstacle swim and 15m object carry. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS, and treatment for bleeding. Fitness improves in 350m workouts and 100m timed swims. Ratio 1:5.

WATERLOO SPLASH 10 (8-15Y)

Swimmers develop better strokes over 75m swims of each stroke. They tackle lifesaving sport skills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Swimming drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation. Ratio 1:5.

WATERLOO SPLASH 11 (8-15Y)

Swimmers are challenged with 600m workouts; 300m timed swims and a 25m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100m swims. First aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defense methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water.

Ratio 1:5.

TRIATHLON SWIM TRAINING - YOUTH (8-15Y)

This one hour program focuses on the swimming component of the triathlon. The instructor works on increasing stroke efficiency, speed and swimming endurance through drills and other active stations. Focus is on achieving personal bests. No triathlon experience necessary. Prerequisite: Participants must have completed Waterloo Splash 8. Ratio 1:4.

LEADERSHIP STROKE ENHANCEMENT (12Y+)

Swimmers learn corrective drills and tips for all the basic swim strokes to be successful in our leadership programs. Prerequisite: Ready for Bronze Medallion or higher. Ratio 1:4.

TEEN 1 (12-17Y)

Work on front and back floats and glides and front, back and side flutter kicks. Learn breath control and tread water wearing a personal flotation device. Improve fitness and kicks with 4 x 9-12m interval training. Ratio 1:4.

TEEN 2 (12-17Y)

Jump into deep water and tread for 60 sec. Learn to recover an object from the bottom in chest-deep water.

Improve the flutter kick over longer distances and work towards 15m front crawl and back crawl swims. Improve both fitness and flutter kick with 2 x 25m interval training. Ratio 1:4.

TEEN 3 (12-17Y)

Kick it up a notch! Work on front crawl and back crawl and kicking in 25m - 50m swims and 25m interval training workouts. Learn how to swim under water and how to do breaststroke arms and breathing over 10-15m. Support yourself at the surface for up to 2 min.

ADULT STROKE ENHANCEMENT

Swimmers learn corrective drills and tips for all the swim strokes. Prerequisite: Successfully completed Adult 4. Ratio 1:4.

TRIATHLON SWIM TRAINING (16Y+)

Participating in an upcoming triathlon? Register for this training session and work on skills, drills and secrets to improve the swim portion of the triathlon. Entry requirements: Must be able to swim 100m (4 lengths) of front crawl and back crawl. Must be a competent deep end swimmer. Max. 4.

Private lessons are a great idea if your child needs extra attention on a certain skill. The minimum age requirement is 6 years and all classes are 30 min. in length. Lessons are in blocks of six for the spring session (except Friday Session #1, five lessons).

Note: Participants in private lessons at the Waterloo Splash 5 level or below will require an adult (from the same household/ same gender preferred) in the water during class for any holds or instruction required as swim instructors maintain a 2 metre distance.

When registering, please indicate the class level your child needs to work on. Semi-private lessons are not available.

A report card will be given to swimmers registered for 6 weeks of lessons. Bring your previous report card on the first day of your session for the new instructor.

Missed lessons will not be refunded or rescheduled without a doctor's note within 7 days of the scheduled lesson. Same instructor not guaranteed for second block of spring private lessons.

HELP US PROTECT WATERLOO’S NATURAL AREAS Respect property boundaries Extending your property on to public land or natural areas is not permitted.

Mowing or pruning natural areas, or using public land for garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles and bird feeders smothers native vegetation, introduces non-native species, compacts soil and causes erosion.

Respect our wildlife Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes, which are beneficial because they help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats! A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Respect wildlife and their habitat by observing wildlife from afar to avoid confrontation.

Mammals and birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects foster healthy forests. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.

Don’t disturb natural areas Ferns, leeks, berries and wood found in natural areas should be left alone. Planting vegetation, removing vegetation (including wood for firewood), controlling wildlife, creating new foot paths and dumping are all detrimental to Waterloo’s delicate ecosystems. The accumulated effect of these activities is costly to tax payers and creates great problems for the natural area. Plants are depleted past restoration, habitat, food and nutrients are lost, soils can become eroded, and invasive plants become established.

Try planting your own native plants, found at most garden stores, in your own backyard to enjoy. This will help keep native plants for our wildlife and future generations.

Drain pools and hot tubs properly Chemicals in hot tubs and pools can be harmful to vegetation and water features when drained into a park or natural area.

Place the drain tube on your property, away from the park or natural area, to allow water to filter into the soils in your yard.
