Hello Vallejo,
It is truly a pleasure to join the team here in Vallejo. I look forward to meeting our community members and learning more about the opportunities and challenges shaping our city. There are many positive developments underway, both locally and with partners across the region, and I’m excited to help guide these efforts while advancing new initiatives in the months ahead.
As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, please note that City Hall will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. Vallejo will host two memorial services honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. The first ceremony will take place at the Mare Island Military Cemetery at 9 AM, followed by a second ceremony behind City Hall at 11 AM.

This week also marks National Public Works Week. Vallejo’s Public Works team plays a vital role in keeping our city running smoothly. Their hard work is especially visible as they push forward on several road repair efforts now that spring rains have eased. The delayed Cape Seal project is nearing completion, and crews are fully engaged in the first phase of a major street repaving program that will improve key thoroughfares across the city.

State Route 29 Pavement Rehabilitation & Complete Street Project
Work is gaining momentum as curbs are being filled in.
For this issue I would like to highlight bike lanes. SR29 will have Class II and Class IV bike lanes implemented in different areas of the project. What does this mean?
A Class II bike lane is a striped lane on the street meant for people riding bicycles. It’s not separated by a physical barrier, but with pavement markings and sometimes green paint to help it stand out.
Think of it like giving bicyclists their own dedicated space on the road, so everyone has a predictable place to be. Some of the features to thebike lane are that they are usually 5 to 6 ft wide and often painted green for visibility. They are exclusive or semiexclusive for bikes, cars should not drive in it except when turning or merging safely. They improve safety by giving bicyclists a clear, consistent space and reduce conflicts with drivers by making it a more predictable path of travel for everyone.
The other type of bike lane that will be featured on SR29 is a Class IV. A Class IV bike lane gives bicyclist their own protected path right next to the road. The path usually separated with barriers the help keep bikes and cars apart.
In addition you can see to the right, the map of SR29 and where the bike lanes will be added and how they connect cyclist to the Carquinez Bridge.

County Honoring Centenarians
The Solano County Board of Supervisors is inviting the community to help identify local centenarians for recognition by the Board of Supervisors later this fall as part of the 20th annual Centenarian Commemoration Celebration.
Now in its 20th year, the program has become one of the County’s most cherished traditions, celebrating the lives, legacies and wisdom of residents who have reached the extraordinary milestone of 100 years or more. To date, the Board has honored 347 centenarians, representing more than 35,000 combined years of life experience.
“Our seniors deserve to be supported, protected and given every opportunity to thrive,” said Monica Brown, District 2 Supervisor and Chair of the Solano County Board of Supervisors. “From helping them remain safely in their homes to expanding access to services, we must continue investing in programs that honor their dignity and recognize their lasting contributions to our community.”
Each year, the celebration shines a spotlight on the remarkable stories of Solano County’s oldest residents, preserving their history, honoring their contributions, and recognizing the invaluable role older adults play in shaping the community. As part of the commemoration, participating centenarians are invited to share their life stories through personal interviews, which are featured in a commemorative video presentation and preserved in a hardcover yearbook for families and future generations.
“This program holds a special place in my heart,” said John M. Vasquez, District 4 Supervisor and cosponsor of the annual event. “Twenty years ago, the Board launched this effort by honoring my first-grade schoolteacher when she turned 100 years old. What began as a tribute to one incredible woman has grown into a countywide celebration of hundreds of centenarians whose lives continue to inspire us all.”
Over the years, the program has also recognized rare “super-centenarians,” individuals who live to age 110 or older. These individuals are exceptionally rare, with only about 60 people living in the United States at any given time and roughly 300–500 worldwide, and reaching this milestone occurs in only about 1 in every 1,000 centenarians. In that context, Solano County’s recognition of two super-centenarians—Marie West (2011) and Reta Wills (2021)—over the past 20 years is an extraordinary and uncommon distinction that underscores the uniqueness of the County’s centenarian community.

If you know of a centenarian, or someone who is currently 99 years old and will be turning 100 by year’s end. please email Centenarian@SolanoCounty.gov and/or call (707) 784-6129 by or before August 1, 2026. Please relay the following information over the phone or in an email to the Supervisor, including (1) name, (2) address, (3) phone number, (4) and best contact email address.
The City of Vallejo is submitting a grant proposal to fund improvements at Wilson Park. Your input in advance of the application is needed to guide the proposal based on your feedback.

Good Neighbor Day by
Cleaning Local Streets
Last Saturday morning, May 16, a group from LifeChurch (400 Adm. Callaghan Lane, Vallejo) showed love to their neighbors by picking up trash around and up their block (Kathy Ellen Dr., Fleming Ave., Skyway Dr.).
“It was our simple way of celebrating Good Neighbor Day,” they announced. Sure enough, this brought smiles, waves, and “thank you’s” from neighbors. This day also launched their participation in the Adopt A Block program of the City of Vallejo.

Vallejo’s two annual Memorial Day ceremonies set for Monday, May 25, 2026
Vallejo will hold their two annual Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 25 and Veterans are cordially inviting everyone to attend the 9 a.m. ceremony at the Mare Island Naval Cemetery, 167 O’Hara Court, and the 11 a.m. ceremony at the Vallejo Warriors’ Memorial behind City Hall at 3 Capitol Street.
Memorial Day, a federal holiday held on the last Monday in May, is the nation’s foremost annual day to remember and honor its deceased service men and women, but particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. For both events, everyone is advised to bring water and wear wide-rim hats as warm and sunny weather is anticipated. The RADM Richard O’Kane Division, US Naval Sea Cadet Corps will Parade the Colors, Travis AFB Band of the Golden West musicians will play patriotic music, and the US Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco will conduct helicopter Fly-Bys.

City of Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce and County of Solano Supervisor Cassandra James will give the welcome remarks, and the prayers will be given by US Navy Veteran and DAV CA 21 Junior Vice Commander Kari Lacy.
“I hope that we all take a moment every day and especially on Memorial Day May 25 to reflect, remember, and honor all the men and women who shall have borne the battle and made the ultimate sacrifice for our great and grateful Nation,” said Nestor Aliga who proudly volunteers for Veterans events.
