SYRACUSE PAL

Meet Our Team KIDS. COPS. COMMUNITIES.

Together, we can turn our dreams into reality and achieve greatness.

Jimmy Oliver Director of Community Engagement

Thank you all for reading our Winter Newsletter. Please see my message to the Syracuse PAL family on the following page.

Adonia Wade Marketing and Communications Director

I joined the Syracuse PAL team in July and I am honored to be a part of such a great organization for the youth of the community I am passionate about. I cannot wait to continue making connections and advocating for our youth in this role. Their stories matter, and being a part of this team gives me the opportunity to help impact and tell their stories.

Abigail Jones Administrative Coordinator

I am a junior at Syracuse University studying policy studies and public relations and have had the pleasure of working for Syracuse PAL since 2022. In my time with PAL, I have worked in communications, research, event planning, and recently developed PAL’s Skills Win Tournament Program.

GIRLS' EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Our Inagrual Girls' Empowerment Program ran for seven weeks. Through interactive workshops, mentorship, and empowering activities such as detecting our insecurities and releasing them, learning about proper hygiene, learning about haircare, etc. we provided tools and supported the young girls of our community to embrace their uniqueness and remain confident in a world that sometimes can break them down.

This program was particularly important to us at Syracuse PAL because it is helping us to empower and help the young girls of our community. A special thanks to Cynthia Thomas for seeing a need for this in our community and working with us to make it happen for the youth. Thank you to all of the volunteers and law enforcement that supported the girls!

SYRACUSE PAL RUNNING CLUB

The Syracuse PAL Running Club consisted of two groups of youth. The first group was ages 6-12 and the second was youth 13-18.

We want to give a special thanks to Chief Mark Rusin and all of our volunteers for training the youth and getting them ready for the big run. The youth learned proper running technique, stamina building exercises, played games, and got in some good exercise.

Thank you to Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens for coming out and joining us at our first session of running club!

Thank you to Tipp Hill Neighborhood Association, Hancock Estabrook, Bond, Schoeneck & King, and Onondaga Community College for helping our running club come to fruition.

SKILLS WIN! TOURNAMENT

We want to thank Professor Bill Coplin and his passionate team of Syracuse University students for partnering with Syracuse PAL once again to bring the Skills Win! Tournament back for another session.

Skills Win! is a six-week project dedicated to coaching 30 middle school students right here in Syracuse and to empower these students with essential computer and interpersonal skills, encompassing typing, goal-setting, Microsoft 365 proficiency, and even the art of creating a compelling elevator pitch.

Skills Win! goes beyond just technical skills and focuses on the students as an individual and gives them tools to become a well rounded individual. We want to give a special thank you again to professor Coplin and his team of students, their dedication has been crucial in making this program a reality.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH DRAWING CONTEST

First Place: Chase C.

Our Third Annual Black History Month Drawing Contest was another success. We are proud to be able to show the positive attributions our Syracuse youth are making in the community and to illuminate their talent.

Our winners of this year's contest are Chase C. from Corcoran High School who won our first place prize of $500, Joanna E. of Syracuse Academy of Science who won our second place prize of $400, and Cory B. of the Institute of Technology who won our third place prize of $300.

Second Place: Joanna E.

We want to thank all of the youth who participated in our Third Annual Black History Drawing contest. This contest allows us not only to commemorate Black History Month, but also allows us to showcase the artistic talent among our youth.

Third Place: Cory B.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME

Syracuse PAL youth were invited to the Onondaga Community College Men’s Basketball game. Our youth were able to enjoy the game and enjoy food!

After the game our youth were given Onondaga Community College gear and got to talk with some OCC officials. We want to thank Onondaga Community College for continuing to support our youth and giving them opportunities to attend their events and be in a collegiate atmosphere.
