A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MICHAEL J. RYAN

Summer is in full swing here in Sunrise, and with it comes a season filled with sunshine, energy, and community spirit. There’s something special about the long days and warm nights that bring us together to enjoy all the wonderful things our City offers.

Whether you’re cooling off at our splash pads, hitting the links at The Bridges at Springtree Golf Club, or enjoying a game of pickleball or basketball at one of our covered or indoor courts, Sunrise has something for everyone this summer. I encourage you to explore our parks, pools, and community centers and to take advantage of the exciting lineup of events happening all season long.

We’re thrilled to invite you to our annual July 4th Celebration, a full day of patriotic fun for the whole family. The festivities kick off at 9:00 a.m. with our “The Great Outdoors” parade along Sunset Strip, leading into a Family Fun Day at City Park (6600 Sunset Strip) featuring children’s rides, inflatables, music, and a variety of food and beverage vendors. In the evening, head over to Amerant Bank Arena for an outdoor concert by the Paradigm Party Band from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., culminating in a spectacular fireworks display. Admission and parking are free. We can’t wait to see you and your family out there!

In August, join us for our Back to School Splash on Saturday, August 2nd. Sunrise students will receive free school supplies and a grade-appropriate book while enjoying fun, familyfriendly activities. Then, on August 5th, our National Night Out event returns, bringing residents and first responders together to strengthen neighborhood connections with music, food, and public safety demonstrations. It’s a fantastic way to get to know our amazing team members serving our great City.

Sunrise City Commission, Mayor’s Seat | mryan@sunrisefl.gov

In September, we will reflect and honor those affected by the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, during our annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. Later that month, we celebrate community and tradition at events like the Kids’ Fishing Derby (September 13th), our Fall Harvest Festival (September 27th), and the always popular, and honestly one of my personal favorites, Mayors’ Chess Challenge (September 20th).

We are especially proud of the resources and support available to Sunrise’s veteran community. From assistance programs to recognition events, the City is committed to honoring those who have served. If you or a loved one is a veteran, check out the special feature on page 9 in this issue to learn more about how Sunrise supports our local heroes.

We hope everyone is enjoying the newly opened Village Art Plaza in East Sunrise. Looking ahead into this next quarter, we can’t wait for you to experience some additional upcoming upgrades throughout our City. As they open to the public, we invite everyone to enjoy the newly remodeled Sunrise Civic Center Amphitheater and Signature Sunrise location (formerly the Grand Ballroom) — a perfect spot for your next reunion, office party, or reception.

As always, thank you for being active in what makes Sunrise shine. On behalf of the City Commission and our dedicated City staff, I wish you a joyful summer filled with fun, connection, and community pride.

Michael J. Ryan, Mayor

A MESSAGE FROM DEPUTY MAYOR NEIL C. KERCH

Hello Sunrise!

I am grateful for your support, and I truly appreciate the confidence you showed in me as one of your elected City Commissioners. Since being elected, I have followed my three guiding principles as an elected official, which are: follow your vision for the city, serve with integrity, and deliver results. Every day, I look forward to working with the residents, neighbors, stakeholders, businesses, city staff, and my colleagues on the Commission to make Sunrise the best place to live, work, play, learn, shop, and eat.

During my tenure, I have enjoyed speaking and participating in numerous community meetings and events. I am proud of the improvements to the parks and recreation facilities in neighborhoods citywide, the improvements in our Sunrise Police Department’s community-based policing, and improvements in Sunrise Fire Rescue. We are blessed to have the best Public Safety professionals in all of Florida.

As we continue to tackle the challenges of the economy and inflation, I want to let you know that as a fiduciary of the public’s tax money, I will continue to make sure that the city maintains a structurally balanced budget without raising the tax millage rate, continues to provide excellent programming and services, and continues to plan for the City’s future with infrastructure improvements and investments throughout the city.

I hope over the summer, you will take the time enjoy the many amenities that Sunrise has to offer. Come explore the heart of Original Sunrise at Village Art Plaza, a vibrant public space designed to bring together art, culture, and community. Whether you’re looking for world-class art, delicious bites,

For more art opportunities, stop by our Art Gallery to appreciate one of the traveling exhibits or the work of area artists, or check out the Civic Center Theatre for quality, affordable entertainment, including theatrical presentations, musical performances, and children’s programming. Grab your friends and play some tennis at our beautiful Tennis Club or grab the clubs and enjoy a round of golf at The Bridges at Springtree Golf Club, or cool off at the Sunrise Civic Center Aquatic Complex, Welleby Pool, Village Beach Club, Roarke Pool, or at any of the Splash pads located in our beautiful parks.

Check out the Athletic Club at the Sunrise Civic Center as well as Multipurpose Centers located at Sunrise Athletic Complex (SAC) and adjacent to City Park (Village). All three facilities have gymnasiums that host a variety of recreation activities which include pickleball, basketball, and fitness programs for all ages and offer free access to select amenities for Sunrise residents. For our Seniors, take advantage of the Sunrise Senior Center which hosts a wide variety of events - including trips, classes, support groups, dances, fitness programs, games, and arts and crafts.

As you can see Sunrise has something for everyone and I look forward to seeing you out and about in our city. Sunrise is the city that rises above the rest.

A MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT DEPUTY MAYOR JACQUELINE A. GUZMAN

Sunrise City Commission, Seat D | jguzman@sunrisefl.gov

Dear Community Members,

It is a true honor to serve the vibrant and resilient City of Sunrise. I remain committed to working hard each day to ensure that programs are in place to help our families not only survive but truly thrive. This past Spring was our first Teen Summit, a two-day program providing our youth with valuable professional development, local government knowledge, and team-building exercises. It was a powerful event that helped prepare our young people for brighter futures.

In April, I’m proud to have hosted a Housing Resources Town Hall in collaboration with Congresswoman Sheila CherfilusMcCormick, Commissioner Hazelle Rogers and several key organizations. Many community members received vital support—including a single mother who was able to access the resources she needed to return to school.

Did you know? Broward County is facing a growing housing crisis, with over 50% of renters considered cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing. The City of Sunrise is actively working with responsible developers to create sustainable workforce housing. These future developments will offer affordable options for essential workers like teachers, nurses, police officers, retail staff, and others who are the backbone of our local economy.

In partnership with Broward College, we launched the Broward UP program to provide free workforce training opportunities, with a special focus on supporting aspiring entrepreneurs. This initiative continues to empower

residents by building valuable skills and advancing economic mobility.

Thank you to Torre Fuerte Community Church for hosting our Quarterly Food Distributions to support families in need. Food insecurity is a real challenge—even in our own backyards—and while we may not solve it all, we are making a difference one family at a time.

Lastly, I’m thrilled to share that the Village Art Plaza is now officially open! We’ve already hosted some amazing events, and I encourage you to check the community calendar for all the exciting things happening. As we look ahead, I would like to take a moment to congratulate all our summer graduates—you make our community proud. I’m wishing everyone a productive and positive summer and fall season!

Thank you for the opportunity to serve!

A MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER LATOYA S. CLARKE SCAN

I am thrilled and incredibly honored to serve as your newly elected commissioner! Making history as the first African American woman and the first woman of Jamaican descent to represent the City of Sunrise is truly one of the proudest and most meaningful moments of my life. This isn’t just a role for me; it is one of my greatest achievements and honors, and I’m so excited to serve this amazing community I call home.

Throughout my campaign, I made a pledge to prioritize collaboration and foster open communication, ensuring that the residents of Sunrise feel heard and effectively represented citywide. In the past few months, I have championed initiatives designed to prevent homelessness, broaden educational opportunities for our youth and young adults, enhance waste management efforts, and improve the City’s infrastructure. These efforts reflect my commitment to addressing the critical needs of our community and building an inclusive and thriving future for all.

In collaboration with my fellow commissioners, I remain firmly devoted to upholding a balanced budget that sustains essential services and impactful programs while strategically investing in the long-term prosperity of our City. Our collective dedication to keeping the tax millage rate low underscores our commitment to fiscal responsibility. By enhancing public safety and ensuring safer roads and communities, we create an environment that is not only inviting but also conducive to economic growth. These efforts are designed to attract new businesses, support smart and sustainable growth, generate job opportunities, and extend a warm welcome to new residents as they become part of our beautiful City.

Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of immersing myself in our vibrant community. I have toured the various city-owned facilities, visited 11 of our City’s public schools, celebrated the grand opening of the Village Art Plaza, read

stories with children during Story Time in the Park, engaged in our City’s advisory boards, participated in Senior Center programs, worked along with the Veterans group, enjoyed Tunes ‘N Trucks events, and joined business owners for their grand openings. Each experience has deepened my connection to our community.

With summer here, I cordially invite you and your family to participate in our many community activities, like our City’s first Caribbean American Heritage Festival last month in June. The event celebrated the rich Caribbean contributions to our City and country. The Village Art Plaza features various activities, including yoga sessions, a Farmers’ Market, and Village Art Bites food truck events. The Run Club offers an excellent opportunity to stay active and connect with other residents and friends. The Sunrise Civic Center Amphitheater will open this summer, providing even more opportunities for celebration. Our parks, recreational facilities, and pools offer perfect settings for family bonding and enjoyment.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my predecessor, former Commissioner Mark Douglas, for his eight years of dedicated service to our City and to the Mayor, fellow Commissioners, City Manager, Chiefs, and team for their gracious welcome. I am excited about our collaborative efforts to advance the interests and welfare of our City.

As we look forward to the 2025-2026 cycle, let us embrace this new season with enthusiasm and expectation. Join us as we navigate uncharted territories and seize new opportunities together.

46 years as a Sunrise resident!

My family moved here from Brooklyn when I was 12 years old when Sunrise was a small town with just 25,000 residents. As the youngest of five brothers and two sisters, I grew up playing baseball and riding dirt bikes on trails that later became Sawgrass Mills mall and the Amerant Bank Arena.

I attended Sunrise’s own Bair Middle School and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, which gave me a strong foundation. Sunrise is where I met the love of my life, Allison, at Nob Hill Hall, and we have two beautiful daughters, Kaitlyn and Alyse.

I’m so grateful to our outstanding employees who maintain our incredible 250 acres of parks, green space, and facilities, including incredible splash pads, pools, Safety Town, Pawgrass Dog Park, covered basketball courts, indoor gymnasiums, the fitness center, sports fields, The Bridges at Springtree Golf Club, Sunrise Tennis Club, Village Art Plaza, Veterans Park, and new upcoming planned pickleball courts.

In 1985, I became a Sunrise business owner, founding a ceramics company, Michael Anthony’s Designs. I founded Scuotto’s Pizza in 1997. I also had the honor to serve as a board member of the Greater Sunrise Chamber of Commerce. Over the years, I have worked with great Managers, employees, and colleagues to give our residents the best quality of life. As a City Commissioner since 1997, I enjoyed the Sunrise Musical Theatre and Sunrise Ice Skating Rink; I was part of the building of the Florida Panthers Arena (home of the Stanley Cup Champions), the American Express Headquarters,

and the Oasis and Colonade expansion of Sawgrass Mills mall, including the new AC Marriott Hotel. The Commission also developed Florida’s fourth-largest corporate office park and a variety of diverse housing options to support the workforce, including 950 new single-family and townhouses on the old Sunrise Country Club site.

I’ve always been here for the community. I was inspired to support the Neighborhood Participation Program, which helps bring sidewalks, landscaping, streetscapes, and monument signage, and soon, you will get to name your neighborhood along Sunset Strip. I proposed the AIM (Accessibility, Inclusion, and Mobility) Board, which has been ensuring support and access for adults and children of all ages and disabilities. My involvement includes annual fundraisers, golf tournaments, 5K runs, and sponsorships, providing more than 50 $1,000 college scholarships to Piper High School students throughout the years. Our family has also made a difference with Wish Trips, the annual Kaitlyn’s Gift toy drive, the Sunrise Italian-American Civic Association, the Scuotto/Marziliano Family Foundation, support to the Dan Marino Foundation, the Anthony Rizzo Foundation, Gilda’s Club, Special Olympics, Knights of Columbus, Relay for Life, American Cancer Society, Piper JROTC, American Legion, and the Paralyzed Veterans of Florida. This is my City, I’m part of it, and I’m proud of it!

A Summer of Safety and Community in Sunrise Summer in Sunrise is a time for connection, celebration, and safety. At the Sunrise Police Department (SPD), our mission goes beyond law enforcement—building trust, engaging with residents, and ensuring everyone feels secure and supported. As we move through the heart of summer, we want to highlight key events and initiatives that reflect our commitment to a safer, more connected Sunrise.

Fourth of July Celebration: Safety First

Our annual Fourth of July celebration is one of the city’s biggest and most beloved events. From the morning parade to the evening concert and fireworks at Amerant Bank Arena, our officers will be out in full force to ensure everyone has a safe and memorable day. We ask residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals and keep safety at the forefront of their minds. If you choose to celebrate at home, follow essential safety tips: light fireworks away from people, never relight duds, soak used items before disposal, and always supervise children and pets.

National Night Out: Join Us on August 5th

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 5th, for the biggest National Night Out (NNO) Sunrise has ever hosted. Held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Sunrise Public Safety Building, NNO is our annual opportunity to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Expect food, live music, family-friendly games, police demonstrations, and community booths. There’s something for everyone, from K-9 demos to face painting and SWAT showcases to free giveaways. Come out, meet your officers, and help us build a stronger, safer Sunrise.

Introducing the SPD Gaming Trailer

We’re excited to unveil the Sunrise Police Department’s newest outreach tool: our mobile Gaming Trailer. Outfitted with the latest

gaming consoles and fully accessible, the trailer is designed to connect with our youth through the power of play. Whether it’s Mario Kart with a School Resource Officer or a virtual reality experience, this space creates positive, relaxed interactions between officers and young residents. You’ll see it at National Night Out, school events, and future community gatherings.

What It All Means

These efforts are rooted in our community-first philosophy. We believe that trust, engagement, and visibility are essential to preventing crime and creating safe spaces. The SPD Gaming Trailer, National Night Out, and our presence at summer events all serve one purpose: bringing people together and reinforcing that Sunrise is a place where every resident matters.

We encourage everyone to follow us on social media @ SunrisePoliceFL and stay informed about upcoming events and programs. Your partnership is what makes this community special, and we’re proud to serve alongside you. Here’s to a fun, safe summer in Sunrise—see you out there!

We’re now a month into hurricane season, and I want to remind you how important it is to be prepared before a storm is on the radar.

Sunrise Fire Rescue is ready to respond when severe weather strikes, but your safety truly begins at home. If you haven’t made your hurricane plan yet, now is the time. Talk with your family about where you’ll go if you need to evacuate, how you’ll stay in touch, and who to call in an emergency. Share your plan with relatives or friends outside the area so they can help if needed.

Every home should also have an emergency supply kit with at least three days’ worth of food and water, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, medications, chargers, pet supplies, and personal items. Important documents, like ID, insurance, and medical records, should be kept safe in a waterproof container.

Don’t forget to clean up your yard. Tree limbs, loose furniture, and outdoor decorations can become dangerous in high winds. Trim your trees early and remove yard waste well before a storm warning is issued.

If you or a loved one may need extra help during an evacuation due to age, disability, or medical needs, please register with the Broward County Vulnerable Population Registry (Broward.org/Registry). This confidential tool helps first responders plan and prioritize assistance.

As always, check on neighbors, especially seniors or anyone needing a hand. Being prepared is not just about protecting ourselves; it’s about how we protect each other.

For detailed information, checklists, evacuation zones, and shelter info, visit sunrisefl.gov/hurricane.

Thank you for taking hurricane preparedness seriously. The more we prepare now, the safer we’ll all be later.

Stay safe.

EPHEMERAL CREATURES

Opening Reception: Friday, July 18, at 6:00 pm On exhibit through Saturday, August 23 Civic Center Art Gallery

Works by Sarah E. Huang

Sarah E. Huang is a Taiwanese-American multidisciplinary artist and arts educator based in Delray Beach.

“Ephemeral Creatures” explores identity, impermanence, and the tension between physicality and memory through abstract paintings, drawings, and installations. Animalistic figures and fragmented forms emerge and dissolve across the work, acting as ephemeral stand-ins for the self—bodies and identities caught in flux. These “creatures” embody the instability between the physical and the surreal. Built from layered paint and sewn together from fragments of past works, this exhibition reflects how identity is shaped by memory, emotion, and lived experience, constantly shifting and reforming over time. Materiality plays a central role in this exploration. Suspended sculptural forms, constructed from reassembled paintings, bear stitched seams and frayed edges. Raw canvas, cut, stitched, stretched, and reshaped, evokes flesh—exposed, vulnerable, and mutable. Expansive abstract paintings form immersive environments—luscious fields of color and texture that recall emotional landscapes, distant memories, and dreamlike spaces. Through layers, fragments, and fluctuating forms, EPHEMERAL CREATURES reflects an ongoing fascination with the negotiation of identity. It invites viewers to consider how we continually reconstruct who we are—piecing together what remains, letting go of what fades, and carving out a space for our individual selves. Meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments at our free opening reception.

VISIONS OF SOUND

Opening Reception: Friday, August 29, at 6:00 pm On exhibit through Saturday, October 4

His exhibit celebrates the magical unifying force of music throughout all languages and cultures. The vibrant images of musicians, dancers and music inspired photos captured by professional photographer and musician Jeremiah Jenner stir the rhythmic notes of life and spirit.

Step into a world where melody meets imagery in “Visions of Sound”, a dynamic photography exhibition that celebrates music as a universal language—one that transcends borders, cultures, and generations. From the thunderous pulse of a Japanese Taiko drummer to the moody haze of a jazz saxophonist lost in a smoky dive, Jenner’s work pays homage to the timeless magic of music. Iconic influences such as John Coltrane and Eddie Van Halen echo through his compositions, evoking the freedom, emotion, and innovation that music inspires. Known for his sleek, minimalistic style, Jenner’s limitededition works have earned the admiration of both the media and serious art collectors.
