Growing From Our Roots

How did Sugar Hill get such a sweet name?

The story that’s been told for generations describes a traveling wagon that lost a wheel on a hill in our city, spilling sugar across one of the highest points in Gwinnett County. Tales of the ground being covered in white sugar spread and the area came to be known as “the hill where the sugar spilled.” As our community grew, the name was shortened to “The Sugar Hill” and then, simply “Sugar Hill” when we were incorporated as a city on March 24, 1939.

Sugar Hill honors the history of our name through the official city logo, the Sugar Maple tree. Leaves on the logo are made up of colorful handprints representing the diverse residents that make our city so sweet. Like the tree, our roots run deep and wide with a strong history of community champions as well as moonshiners on the nearby Chattahoochee River and goldminers near our present-day downtown. The Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society diligently works to preserve this shared community history much like the bark on the Sugar Maple protects the heart of the tree, allowing it to build on old growth and withstand new challenges and changes.
