CITY MANAGER’S CORNER Every day in our community, many people go hungry, find themselves in need of shelter from domestic violence or homelessness, or in need of support while caring for a child with a chronic health condition. United Way steps in to bridge the gap between those in need and the resources best equipped to help their unique circumstance in a myriad of ways.

One way is through partnerships with agencies such as ours. Each year, through Employee Pledges and events like the Treasurer’s United Way Golf Tournament, our United Way fundraising efforts raise thousands of dollars – and that’s great! However, it is about more than just money. You might volunteer your services at a Food Bank, Shelter or Fundraising Event. Perhaps you know of an organization that has been serving the community and could reach more people through United Way; or know of someone in need of help. You may simply have an idea to share.

All are valuable contributions to help build a healthier and stronger community. As we embark upon the 2019 United Way Campaign for the City of Suffolk, please consider contributing in the best way for you.

National Hands-Only CPR Training Comes to Suffolk Employees The American Heart Association, in coordination with Anthem, will be bringing their mobile Hands-Only CPR training event to us on Tuesday, October 22nd. The event will be held at Constant’s Wharf Park & Marina,100 E Constance Rd, from 10:00-3:00.

The AHA’s goal is to train as many people across the nation to respond to a cardiac event, without requiring the traditional breaths, in hopes of saving more lives. The event is free to all employees.

We hope to train up to 250 employees at this event! The AHA Tour brings a DJ, photo both and other fun activities with them. Each participant takes home their own mannequin and training DVD, to then teach hands-only CPR to family and friends.

Hampton Roads Chamber Valor Awards Recipient The Hampton Roads Chamber

sponsors the Valor Awards to thank the men and women of the Police, Fire, and EMS Departments from our region for their selfless acts of heroism and commitment to protecting our communities.

Congratulations to Suffolk Police Officer Corey Hubbard who was recognized for his heroic actions on December 5, 2018, when he responded to a reported shooting incident. The suspect remained

on scene inside of a residence where he and the victim struggled for control of the loaded gun with hysterical family members right next to them. The first Officer to arrive on scene and witness the dangerous chaos, he singlehandedly subdued the suspect, retrieved the loaded weapon, and applied a medical tourniquet to the gunshot wound on the victim’s leg. Before any other aid could arrive on scene, Officer Hubbard took the suspect into custody, preserved the crime scene, and prevented further harm.

SUFFOLK EMPLOYEE RECEIVES VIRGINIA AIRPORT MANAGER OF THE YEAR AWARD A Suffolk employee has been selected to receive the Virginia Airport Manager of the Year Award for 2019.

Tim Daniel, Airport Manager at the Suffolk Executive Airport, was selected by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Aviation to receive the Virginia Airport Manager of the Year Award for 2019 due to his outstanding contributions toward the development of aviation in Virginia. He was especially commended for his assistance in, “Bringing both a restaurant and flight school to the airport, thereby making it a wonderful attraction to pilots, and helping create the next generation of aviators.”

He was further praised for a number of capital and safety achievements.

JOE BAGLEY VFW POST 2582 HONORS SUFFOLK PUBLIC SAFETY PERSONNEL The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) presents Public Servant Awards to emergency medical technicians, law enforcement personnel, and firefighter personnel each year nationwide.

Congratulations to the following employees: Suffolk Fire & Rescue Lieutenant Roger W. Stinnette, Jr. – VFW Emergency Medical Technician Public Servant Citation Lt. Stinnette was noted to be an exceptional ALS provider that is always calm, focused, clear, and concise. Lt. Stinnette keeps personnel informed of all important issues related to equipment, hospital interactions, patient encounters, and unusual calls. He continually exceeds the minimum hourly requirements for re-certification while keeping current with the ever changing world that is EMS. He takes advantage of many extracurricular activities to keep sharp.

His role as a SWAT medic provides his team with another set of ‘out of the box’ skills that allows him to be a resource during calls of behavioral emotional stress as well as blunt and penetrating trauma emergencies.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue Lieutenant Christopher K. Hehl – VFW Firefighters Public Servant Citation Lt. Hehl was credited with bringing personality, passion, motivation, inspiration, organization, book smarts, street smarts and a charisma that is hard to come by to the profession. His passion for the job was lauded along with his performance on the scene of incidents and ability to communicate with others. Lt. Hehl was noted to remain calm, focused, clear and concise while being decisive.

Suffolk Police Officer Kyle Valois – VFW Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation During the course of 2018, Officer Valois investigated a common nuisance in his patrol zone and was able to obtain a search warrant for the residence. The search warrant produced drug paraphernalia and an arrest warrant was secured for the homeowner. In May 2018, Officer Valois assisted the detective bureau in identifying a suspect of a commercial robbery. In October 2018, Officer Valois responded to a shooting in the Downtown Suffolk area. While en route to the call, he was involved in a vehicle pursuit of the suspect. The pursuit ultimately led to the apprehension of two suspects. These are only a few examples of the meticulous and exemplary work performed by Officer Valois during the course of 2018.

Public Utilities Utility Crew Leader Victor Arrington and Skilled Laborer Andre West

recently achieved certification as Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) technicians. The certification process required specialized classroom training as well as the successful completion of a written examination developed by the nationally recognized National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO). The training allowed Victor and Andre to increase their skills in the area of advanced condition assessments of buried sewer piping. This ultimately leads to increased levels of reliability of the sewer system. Congratulations Victor and Andre on your hard work!

Public Utilities Senior Engineering Technician Kellie Burchfield

was recently selected as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Promise Program scholar at Tidewater Community College. She is one of twenty applicants that were selected from a competitive pool of over 100 submissions. The program provides Kellie with two years of free tuition and fees as part of the TCC Women’s Center STEM Promise Program. The program is intended to boost the number of women in STEM careers in the Hampton Roads area. Kellie plans to eventually complete a degree in engineering and with this scholarship, she is off and running!

TREASURER’S OFFICE INSIGHTS The City Treasurer’s Office has once

again met the requirements for accreditation from the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia. City Treasurer Ron Williams was presented with the certification at the Treasurers’ Association of Virginia’s annual conference in Arlington in June. Pictured (L-R) are Deputy Treasurer Andrew Owen, Chief Deputy Treasurer Shirley Snead, Delegate Emily Brewer, and Williams.

According to Treasurer Association President Evelyn Powers, “those Treasurers that choose to submit to the accreditation process take an extra step to ensure they are good stewards of their locality’s funds”, and “have demonstrated they are of the highest caliber and integrity.”

On Wednesday, June 5th, City Treasurer Ron Williams hosted the Virginia Department of the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division in Suffolk City Hall to assist citizens in determining if they had any unclaimed funds due to them. Several hundred people took advantage of this service, which resulted in claims for close to $100,000 in unclaimed property being filed that day, and nearly $200,000 in additional unclaimed property being found for Suffolk residents and businesses. Williams hopes to host the Unclaimed Property Division again next year, as there was a high demand for the service.

The Awards & Recognition Committee of the Virginia Library Association (VLA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Jennifer Brown, Youth and Family Services Manager for the Suffolk Public Library, is the recipient of the 2019 Donna G. Cote Librarian of the Year Award bestowed by the Awards & Recognition Committee of the Virginia Library Association (VLA). This award recognizes an exemplary achievement of a working Virginia Librarian who demonstrates the value of Libraries, enhances the image of Librarians and/or Libraries, promotes an accessible and positive climate in the Library, advances community relations, or initiates a new Library service or program. Jennifer Brown was chosen in part for her work on “SPL Mess Hall,” a summer lunch program in the Library as part of the No Kid Hungry Initiative. She collaborated with churches and community organizations to ensure the success of the program.

SPL Staff, I just want to recognize and commend all of you for your efforts and programming. As a resident of Suffolk for just a few years, I am always impressed with your programs. I’ve lived in several major cities, which I am sure have a greater budget, but do not come close to delivering the programs and activities that SPL provides for its community.

HOME OF THE BRAVE 5K SPONSORED BY PARKS & RECREATION Suffolk Parks & Recreation presents the Home of the Brave 5K and Kids ¼ Mile Dash which will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019. The race will begin and end at 150 North Main Street, Suffolk, Virginia.

The ¼ Mile Dash will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Registration is available online at www.roadrageevents.com for the 5K and the ¼ Mile Dash. The registration fee for the 5K is $39. The ¼ Mile Dash is open to ages 2 to 10, and the registration fee is $24. Prices will increase on October 2, 2019. Runners are encouraged to dress in red, white and blue attire to show support for the Nation’s veterans. All registered participants will receive an event t-shirt.

The 5K course will begin on Main Street, continue down Prentis Street, then back by Pinner Street. Visit us on Facebook @SuffolkParksandRec to view the 5k course map. The entire course is stroller-friendly. The 5K will have an allowed time of 90 minutes to allow walkers to finish. Age Group and Top Finisher Awards will be given for the 5K. This event is timed by A&R Timing.

RECIPE SPOTLIGHT Sheet Pan Chicken Sweet Potatoes and Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Balsamic Glaze Credit to Cooking Classy www.cookingclassy.com An easy and amazingly flavorful sheet pan chicken dinner that will leave everyone craving more! Packed with veggies, sprinkled with bacon and finished with a sweet and tangy balsamic glaze.

Servings: 4 Prep Time 15 minutes Cook Time 32 minutes Total Time 45 minutes

INGREDIENTS 20 oz. sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into 3/4-inch cubes 16 oz. brussels sprouts, bottoms trimmed, halved 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 5 slices bacon, diced 1 1/2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, diced into 1 1/4-inch cubes* 1/2 medium red onion, diced into chunks 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 Tbsp minced fresh rosemary 2 Tbsp minced fresh parsley (optional) 3 Tbsp store-bought or homemade** balsamic glaze

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a rimmed 18 by 13-inch baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.

2. Place sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts on baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil then to toss to evenly coat.

3. Sprinkle bacon over everything then roast in preheated oven 15 minutes. Remove from oven.

4. Add chicken, red onions, garlic and rosemary then season everything with salt and pepper and toss to evenly coat. Spread into an even layer (don’t overlap chicken pieces).

5. Return to oven and roast until chicken has cooked through (center of thickest pieces should register 165) about 17 - 20 minutes longer.

6. Drizzle everything (or each serving) with balsamic glaze, sprinkle with parsley and serve immediately.

7. Recipe source: Cooking Classy

Recipe Notes *Try to cut all of the chicken pieces close to the same size so they’ll finish cooking through at the same time. **For homemade balsamic glaze: In a small saucepan whisk together 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar and 1 Tbsp honey.

Bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring frequently, until reduced to about 3 Tbsp, about 10 - 13 minutes. Let cool (it will thicken more as it cools).

The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office wanted to thank everyone for their hospitality during National Night Out. It was an amazing night with amazing friends. Thanks to all for their hard work and remember it’s a good time to be in Suffolk!

The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office collected school supplies at the downtown Suffolk Walmart which were delivered to Nansemond Parkway, Elephant’s Fork Elementary School, and Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School.
