The Suffolk Police Department is a progressive organization committed to fostering healthy community relationships while combating crime through developing effective lines of communication, the application of advanced technology, and the provision of innovative training. We will strive to retain and recruit diverse personnel that are well informed, service oriented, and embrace the ideals of integrity and honor.

CHIEF’S COLUMN

Can you believe that we’ve already made it through February 2024? Time moves very fast, so please do not take it for granted. Spend as much time as you can with your family and friends. I remember how easy it can be to get wrapped up with work and making money but remember, money cannot buy back time that we miss with our loved ones. Our families are our biggest support system and we need them in order for us to be successful in this very trying occupation.

The department will be holding another hiring event on March 23, 2024. We need each one of you to share this information so we can continue to fill our vacancies throughout the department. By maintaining retention and continuing our recruiting efforts, we can continue to build our staff. Once we begin to do this, we can open the door to our specialty units and promotions.

We are looking forward to recognizing our staff and citizens for their outstanding service provided in 2023 at the next Awards ceremony on March 13th. In addition, our Promotional Ceremony will be held on April 10th. Prior to that ceremony, several promotions and changes will be announced.

On another good note - our Part One Offenses stats compared to last year at this time are down 29%. That is attributed to each one of you and the strong work ethic you bring with you every day. I am very confident that we have the best men and women here at the Suffolk Police Department. Please continue to stay safe and look after each other.

FEATURED OFFICERS

On January 22, 2024 at approximately 1308 hours, Suffolk Police 911 Dispatch received a call in reference to a dog being stabbed six times. The dog’s owner advised that her son was the person that stabbed the dog. The owner advised that her dog (Bennie) bit her son, and to protect himself, her son stabbed the dog. Animal Control Officer Mason was the first to arrive on scene and stood by until backup could arrive. Officer Mason made contact with Bennie’s owner, however, she was enroute to the vet for emergency care for him.

Once uniform patrol officers and Chief M. Lanier arrived on scene, they attempted to make contact with the offender at the front door. This initially produced negative results but the officers noticed movement behind the blinds on the second floor. Officer Mason walked to the back yard and noticed a large amount of blood behind a grill to the right of the back door. Officer Mason took photos of the blood. Officer Mason walked back towards the front of the residence when she noticed that the offender was speaking to Chief Lanier and Officer Boone. The offender admitted to stabbing the dog and advised that he did it to defend himself. The offender had one small cut on his right forearm and one small scratch on his right thumb.

After a brief discussion between Chief Lanier and Officer Mason, Officer R. Brown and Officer Boone took the offender into custody. The offender was subsequently charged with Cruelty to Animals; Maiming, Killing or Poisoning Animals, Fowl etc, and Obstruction of Justice.

Due to the cost and care needed for Bennie, his owner elected for euthanasia. Thank you to all officers involved. Animal Control Officers often deal with issues and calls for service that can be overlooked, but we appreciate your time, effort and dedication to the citizens of this great city.

On February 22, 2024, Officer Daniel Nesbitt was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Nesbitt was hired by the Suffolk Police Department on September 16, 2013. During his tenure of service, Officer Nesbitt has worked primarily on B1 (downtown evening shift). He is a member of the Drone Team and a former Field Training Officer. Officer Nesbitt was named Field Training Officer of the Year in 2021. Let’s all take a moment to congratulate Sergeant Nesbitt on this milestone in his career. Sergeant Nesbitt is currently assigned to C2 (midnights/northern Suffolk)

Commu fin and Michele D’s first in-house communications class. This was a 8 week class taught by Amanda Utter and special guests. The program is designed to get our new dispatchers familiar with the basics of call-taking, nature codes, dispatching and zones. They will now be assigned a trainer and train on the dispatch floor until the DCJS Academy begins where they will be certified.

As a reminder, all officers should perform a functional test for the Taser 7 prior to their shift. This ensures that the Taser 7 is functioning properly and that the battery life is sufficient.
