The sunny days and golden evenings of summer have returned, and with them comes a brand-new edition of the Suffolk Program Guide your map to adventure, creativity, and community connection all season long.
This year, we’re excited to introduce a new way to experience Suffolk’s natural beauty with kayak rentals available now for the first time at Constant's Wharf Park & Marina and Sleepy Hole Park! Whether you're looking for a peaceful solo paddle or a family outing on the water, our local waterways are ready to be explored from an entirely new perspective. Suffolk has other opportunities to get outdoors and make the most of the season. There's no shortage of ways to stay active and engaged, from hiking trails and disc golf to summer camps and recreation programs for all ages. For those who prefer to keep cool, the Suffolk Public Library offers an impressive summer programming lineup including DIY workshops and arts sessions to game nights and tech-focused fun.
You'll also find plenty of ways to immerse yourself in Suffolk's vibrant cultural scene. Stroll through the Farmers’ Market, take part in guided tours, check out new exhibits and performances, or join one of the many hands-on experiences hosted by the Suffolk Visitor Center and our partner organizations.
Remember to mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 5, 2025, for one of our most anticipated annual events : National Night Out. This community-wide celebration of public safety and neighborhood unity continues to showcase what makes Suffolk strong and unique.
Thank you for making Suffolk a dynamic and welcoming place to call home. However you choose to spend your summer, we hope it's filled with inspiration, exploration, and unforgettable moments.

There are many opportunities to become civically engaged with the City of Suffolk! We work to match volunteers and interns with opportunities that fit their interests, talents, knowledge and skillsets.
Volunteers and interns are a valuable asset to the community and assist us in creating quality programs, activities and events and help our community shine. From athletic coaching to community clean-ups - there is something for everyone!
School clubs, civic groups, scouts, individuals and interns are welcome. Volunteers and interns receive valuable training and job experience, socialization, a great volunteer environment, career enhancement, recognition, and the opportunity to meet and assist others. With a variety of volunteer options to choose from, you can find something for your group, your family or just yourself.
Have another idea for a volunteer project? Send us an email at parksemail@suffolkva.us and we’ll help structure a project that fits you or your group perfectly.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2025
It’s that special time of year when Suffolk citizens and public safety personnel take time to celebrate National Night Out. Tuesday, August 5 is the day nationally recognized for National Night Out and the evening where everyone joins together to say “NO” to crime and to strengthen their bonds within their communities. Over 100 communities, homeowner’s associations, civic organizations, neighborhoods, churches, and business sponsors are partnering to make this year’s event extra special with block parties, cook-outs, and minifestivals covering the landscape of Suffolk. For more information, or to be a part of this extraordinary event, visit the Suffolk National Night Out website at www.suffolknno.com.
Join us for the annual Clean the Bay Day with Keep Suffolk Beautiful on June 7, 2025, from 9 AM until 12 PM at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina. This is a great opportunity to help clean up our beautiful local waterways and make a lasting impact on our environment.
No preregistration is required! Simply come to the event and sign in on-site. Supplies and registration will be provided, so all you need to do is show up ready to make a difference. Since its inception in 1989, over 165,000 volunteers have participated in Clean the Bay Day events. In 2024, 74 volunteers in Suffolk alone removed over 2,500 lbs. of litter from the Nansemond River and surrounding areas.
Let’s continue this tradition of preserving and protecting our local environment together! For more details, visit http://www.suffolkva.us/331/ Clean-the-Bay-Day. We hope to see you there!
Join us for a free event hosted by Keep Suffolk Beautiful on Saturday, June 28, from 8 AM until 11 PM, located at Florence Bowser Elementary School (4540 Nansemond Parkway, Suffolk, VA 23435).
As a new service, Keep Suffolk Beautiful and the Suffolk Master Gardeners are teaming up to collect unwanted but usable plant pots. This initiative not only reduces waste in local landfills but also supports our mission of promoting eco-friendly practices.
Other items being accepted are household hazardous waste (ID required), common recyclables, electronics, clothing, plastic bags, eyeglasses, and hearing aids. Additionally, document shredding services will be available to protect your sensitive information. Food and toiletry donations will be accepted and dispersed by the Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center.

While Mills Riddick’s contemporaries may have mocked his Greek Revival home when it was built in 1837, the house now stands as a beautiful reminder of the past and is one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions.
The impressive structure features striking architectural details. The five frieze band windows across the front of the house are rarely seen in eastern Virginia. The front of the mansion is bricked in Flemish bond, and double chimneys rise from both ends of the stately historic landmark. Slender columns of the Greek Revival period frame the main entrance. The interior showcases intricately carved moldings and elaborate ceiling medallions throughout the house.
Riddick’s Folly has four floors, 21 rooms, and 16 fireplaces. All four floors are open to the public. The building features elegantly furnished double parlors, a gentleman’s library, and adult and children’s bed chambers. Also open are the laundry, dining rooms, and kitchen.
Registered with the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission and the National Register of Historic Places. During the Civil War, Riddick’s Folly served as headquarters for the Union Army.
Riddick’s Folly hosts an American Girl event every two months, showcasing eight- to fourteen-year-old female characters of various ethnicities, faiths, nationalities, and social classes throughout different time periods in history. There will be two seatings for each event: 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM. Space is limited (20 girls per seating) and reservations are required. Donations welcome. Ages 6-12; all children must be accompanied by an adult. Call for reservations at 757-934-0822 or email riddicksfolly@verizon.net, beginning 14 days before each event. If you are unable to attend the program (once you have a reservation), please call the museum. There is always a waiting list and no child should miss this opportunity!
