BRINGING NEWS, PEOPLE AND EVENTS TO THE CITY OF SOUTH EL MONTE

City Encourages Community Members to Participate in the Annual Great ShakeOut Set for October 20, 2022

Following FEMA’s “National Preparedness Month” in September, the City of South El Monte is encouraging community members to take part in this year’s “Great ShakeOut” earthquake drill at 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, to practice what to do in the event of a major earthquake.

“Recent earthquakes, not far from our community are a vital reminder that disasters can happen at any time and being prepared for the next big one is critical,” said one City official. “The ShakeOut is a great opportunity for everyone to learn how to protect themselves during an earthquake.”

During the self-led drill, participants practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”. Endorsed by emergency officials and first responders, the safe response to an earthquake is to:

• DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.

• COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand

- If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter

- If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows)

- Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs

• HOLD ON until shaking stops

- Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts

- No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.

To take part in the Great ShakeOut, South El Monte community members can register online at shakeout.org.

In addition to participating in the earthquake drill, community members are encouraged to take precautionary steps to prepare for an earthquake. Preparedness tips to help prepare for an earthquake include:

• Secure or store heavy items around the home and keep breakable items on low shelves.

Create a family emergency communications plan to know how to contact one another if the phone lines are down or other unknown variables.

• Building a seven-day emergency kit for your family and pets.

Emergency preparedness information can be found on the City’s website at cityofsouthelmonte.org.

For more information about the Great ShakeOut drill visit shakeout.org.

KEEP SOUTH EL MONTE

BEAUTIFUL

The City of South El Monte’s greatest asset is its residents and the neighborhoods they live in. A community with clean and presentable properties is more likely to have higher property values; cohesive and aesthetically pleasing neighborhoods; less crime; more civic pride and participation from residents; better economic development opportunities; and overall, a higher quality of life.

Residents are strongly encouraged to preserve the beauty and character of their neighborhoods. As residents of South El Monte, we are stakeholders in our City and responsible for the image of our properties and neighborhoods.

Below are few tips for maintaining beautiful and safe neighborhoods.

Property Maintenance

Maintaining the exterior of all structures on your property is vital to keeping our neighborhoods pleasant. A lack of maintenance in the following areas are detrimental to a neighborhood:

• Deteriorated fences, gates, and garage doors

• Broken or missing windows, damaged window screens

• Weathered or damaged roofs

• Peeled or cracked paint

Landscaping

Landscaping is an important element of any property and has the potential to positively or negatively impact property values and a neighborhood. Despite water restrictions and the drought, property owners are required to maintain their yards. All front-yard landscaping must be trimmed regularly to keep the public right away clear to prevent safety hazards and ensure public safety.

Debris

Discards, debris, and junk accumulations must be promptly removed from the exterior of the property. Such items are not only unsightly, but they also attract rodents and become a fire hazard. Broken, unusable or abandoned items, appliances and furniture are considered discards.

Trash Containers

In attempt to discourage blight and scavenging, the City prohibits trash containers from being placed on the street or curbside prior to 24 hours before the scheduled service day. Once trash collection services have been provided, residents must remove and store their trash containers out of public view.

Inoperable Vehicles

Inoperable vehicles are not permitted to be parked on a property within the public view. A vehicle is considered inoperable if it has the following:

• There are flat or missing tires, the vehicle is dismantled or wrecked

• Junk is piled in, around, or under the vehicle

• The vehicle has no license plate or expired registration

• There are cobwebs or an accumulation of dirt or dust indicating non-use
