CITY PARTNERS WITH VALLE LINDO SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PROVIDE

SUMMER LEARNING RECOVERY SERVICES

Each year, the City of South El Monte provides a traditional safe, enriching and fun summer day camp for children ages 5 to 13. The program typically runs for 11 weeks, which begins at the conclusion of the Valle Lindo School District (VLSD) academic school year and concludes at the commencement of the upcoming school year. However, this year, the City and VLSD have partnered to provide youth summer learning recovery services, under the Summer Partnership Program (SPP), which will be held from June 16th to July 29th. The collaboration is the result of a one-time grant that was awarded to VLSD from the State’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P). The program encourages partnership between organizations to join forces to provide youth with enriched educational experiences. “The City of South El Monte is excited to partner with the Valle Lindo School District for this innovative and expanded summer program that ensures our community’s children have access to the highest quality education in a safe and engaging environment,” said one City official. “The Summer Partnership Program will help our students recover from the lost instructional, social and extracurricular time our children have experienced due to the pandemic.”

The VLSD will hold two SPP sessions from June 16th to July 8th and July 11th to July 29th. Students may enroll in either or both available sessions. The program will be held at Dean L. Shively Middle School, located at 1431 Central Avenue, South El Monte and will operate from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. The City will offer supervised after-hours summer school at the daily conclusion of the SPP program from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm at the school site. Registration for the SPP is being taken at the VLSD office inside the Dean L. Shively Middle School site, Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Parents may also register online at https://bit.ly/3JIHO7S. The SPP will consist of two primary segments. The first, will focus on providing students with academic and educational assistance through summer school from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by lunch provided by VLSD from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The second part will consist of afternoon enrichment activities including music, science, engineering, arts, crafts, movement and dance from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The City’s recreation leaders will continue with the enrichment programming from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm.

The SPP program will provide summer learning support and enrichment services for up to 500 students. It’s open to all students who attend school between kindergarten and eighth grade at no cost to students, regardless of the school district they attend during the regular school year. The City will participate in the program by assigning 20 Recreation Leaders, who will be trained by VLSD on COVID-19 protocols, student safety and curriculum, and instruction to assist with the programing. Under the supervision of school administrators, City Recreation Leaders will assist teachers in providing summer learning support and enrichment activities with SPP and will receive first-hand experience for those who seek a career in child development or education. The City will be reimbursed for staff costs, materials, and supplies. As a result of this partnership with VLSD, the City will also see savings in its traditional summer programming budget.

The City will offer its traditional summer day camp at the Community Center for the first and last weeks of the students’ summer break, but participants must register with the City directly for that program. See page 8 for dates, pricing and the registration process.
