SOUTH EL MONTE CITY COUNCIL APPOINTS NEW CITY MANAGER

The South El Monte City Council is pleased to appoint Rene Salas to serve our community as its new permanent City Manager.

The City Council unanimously selected Salas and approved his appointment during the January 24, 2023, regular City Council meeting. The South El Monte City Council’s unanimous vote reflect their confidence in Mr. Salas to operate the City with accountability, vision, collaboration and transparency for the betterment of the community and staff.

“We welcome Rene Salas as our new City Manager. He has done a tremendous job in communicating with staff, the public and all City Councilmembers. He is the first one in and the last one out each day at City Hall. He is committed to his new position and has been a breath of fresh air with his professionalism and willingness to move South El Monte forward in a positive aspect . We are very thankful that he accepted this challenge,” said one City Official.

Salas began his career with the City of South El Monte in 2017 as the Public Works Director overseeing the Engineering and Public Works Department. Salas was then temporary assigned to oversee Community Development overseeing various departments including Economic Development, Housing, Planning, Building and Safety, and Code Enforcement. In September of 2020, Salas was promoted to Deputy City Manager overseeing the Recreation and Senior Divisions, Public Safety and Homeless Services. Salas also has 12 years of experience working for Sempra Energy International, the parent company of Southern California Gas Company and San Diego Gas and Electric. For two of these years, Salas worked and lived in the countries of Uruguay and Argentina working on natural gas pipeline networks.

“I’d like to thank the Mayor and City Council for appointing me as City Manager. I’m honored and humbled. I can say proudly that South El Monte is a great place to work. The staff is amazing and dedicated to providing excellent community programs, safe road improvements, clean parks, and friendly planning/building services for the community and meeting the goals of the City Council,” said Salas.
