SOUTH EL MONTE
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
UPDATE
The City of South El Monte continues to make significant progress on various capital improvement projects. These projects are part of the City’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, commitment to sustainability, safety, and enhance community spaces to improve the quality of life for all residents.
Merced Avenue Greenway Project
The Merced Avenue Greenway Project was a year-long planning and design initiative aimed at improving stormwater management and water quality along a 1.1-mile stretch of Merced Avenue. Key project goals included:
• Reducing flood risks in surrounding areas.
• Increasing vegetative cover through habitat restoration and greening initiatives.
• Enhancing active transportation with improved pedestrian and bike access.
• Combating urban heat with innovative design solutions.
This transformative project received funding from the California Coastal Conservancy, Disney Foundation, California Natural Resources Agency, State Water Resources Control Board, Rivers & Mountains Conservancy, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSmart Program. Additional funding came from Measure W: Safe Clean Water Program through both the Infrastructure and Municipal Programs.
Aquatic Center Pool Replastering Project
The South El Monte Aquatic Center Pool Replastering Project addressed critical renovations to the facility’s pools to improve safety and usability. Key project goals included:
• Removing and replacing tiles, including those with depth and lane markers.
• Removal and replastering of both pools.
• Updating lighting fixtures for better visibility and energy efficiency.
• Replacing handrails and drain covers to meet updated safety standards.
This project is funded by grants from the California Natural Resources Agency and Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) administered locally by the Los Angeles County Development Authority.
FY 24-25 Pavement Rehabilitation Project
The FY 24-25 Pavement Rehabilitation Project is part of the City of South El Monte’s Pavement Management Program (PMP), which prioritizes street paving and maintenance projects over a five-year period. This initiative reflects the City’s commitment to proactively maintaining its roads as South El Monte continues to grow in population, demographics, and infrastructure needs. Key project goals included:
• Asphalt reconstruction and rehabilitation of existing streets.
• Curb and gutter repairs.
• Restoration of pavement markings and striping.
Streets included in this project are select segments of Rush Street, Klingerman Street, and Floradale Avenue. The project is expected to be completed by mid-January 2025.
