cityhood it is time to celebrate our shops, services and citizens! The COVID-19 virus has hit the city harder than many issues in our colorful 40-year history. It has brought out the best and the worst in some of us, and has left many of our businesses struggling with how to succeed under restrictive public health orders designed to protect us from an invisible disease. Now is the time for our community to come together to support local businesses of all kinds, as the jobs mean more to our neighbors than most of our online purchases. Over the past 40 years Santee has developed a wonderful collage of stores and services. These companies in turn support our citizens of all colors, age, and breadth of backgrounds.

What do you like about working for the City? “In 2018, I moved my family over 400 miles to become the new City Clerk for the City. Working and living in Santee has been a great experience for both my family and me. I have developed great relationships with my fellow co-workers and neighbors. The family-like culture resonates through the people I encounter at work and in the community. I have never lived in such a friendly place, where everyone says hello or good morning and even wants to stop and talk to you. Even during these difficult times, I am especially grateful for the closeness of the community in which I live and work.

Since 2013, Pacific Islander Beer Company (PIB) has been bringing the aloha spirit of the islands to Santee, building a loyal following of Santee locals that have become part of the PIB “ohana” (family) for brewery founder Ku’uipo Lawler and his wife Tracy.

In PIB, Lawler has recreated a special Islander hideaway, complete with wood-carved tiki totems and handmade furniture, spacious patio, Islander music, food, and offering a wide array of Island-inspired Craft Beers, Ales, IPAs, DIPAs, Stouts, Lagers and Seltzers, which are also available in local stores. Lawler noted, “Our aloha for our customers have gotten us through -- each one of our customers bringing friends, kids, and even their dogs, to our very laid-back special hideaway in Santee.”

But Lawler has been anything but laid-back in responding to the pandemic. “We made a plan. Long hours. Adapt daily to changes and new items.” They expanded their outdoor patio venue to accommodate family groups, implemented new safety protocols and created virtual brewery events. “We had very few choices, no history to fall on, we furloughed our staff, government paperwork was insane, but in the end, we laughed while thanking each and every customer for coming to our brewery.”

“We just come out and do our job every day, you know. We just come in to work, get our mail out, packages out, and get everything delivered. Trying to keep things normal. It’s kinda crazy.”

“We get thank you cards all the time, people leave stuff left in mailboxes, you know ‘thank you for being an essential worker,’ constantly. People appreciate us. They tell us that. There is not one specific time. It is daily. ” “I just want you to know that your mail is safe with us. Everybody works really hard to make sure everything gets out every day. We’re busy with packages right now. I have been here for 25 years, and I have never seen the amount of packages like we are seeing now, with everybody being shut in. Hawthorne Country Store opened its Santee location in April of 2020. We are excited to be serving the community of Santee and Greater San Diego County with the addition of this 3rd location in Santee.

Hawthorne County Store is a feed, livestock, and homesteading supply store which, during this shutdown, has had ups and downs. Opening at the beginning of a pandemic was definitely hard as we had to cancel all our grand opening events and classes.

We are specialists in animal nutrition and husbandry, from pets to livestock. We also enjoy helping folks with their homesteading goals, and supporting the slow food and home-grown food movements.

We offer everything our customers need to pamper their dogs, cats, birds, small animals, fish, and reptiles with a wide variety of independent brands (not found in mainstream retail stores), quality pet food and supplies, knowledgeable and helpful staff, and hard to beat prices. We invite our customers to bring in their pets to visit our store, sign up for our email club, and like us on Facebook. One unique feature at All 4 Pets is our resident green iguana, Sophia. Customers are encouraged to come in (bring their children) to visit & learn all about her & her custom-made enclosure.

As an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been committed to remaining open for our customers/community to ensure that customers are able to provide/replenish food & supplies for the pet members of their family. We have had to modify our hours (until further notice) to 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. while remaining open seven days a week.

While complying with social distancing/health regulations for in-store shopping, we also offer phone-in orders and curbside pickup to further assist customers. We hope that these efforts will help keep everyone safe, healthy and limit social contact/exposure for everyone. We appreciate our customers’ continued loyalty & support.

Give Local Support

Nonprofits Santee is home to a handful of successful nonprofit organizations that do amazing work. From kids and teens, to adults and seniors, there is an organization that can help. Featured in the photos below are many of the extraordinary volunteers, who also happen to be compassionate Santee citizens who help with these activities. Below are some of the nonprofit groups that have gone the extra mile to help out during these difficult times.

The Santee Food Bank continuously supports those in need of food and groceries, and fulfills an even more important role during times like these when people may not have the funds for their daily needs. Santee Santas, which usually coordinates an annual holiday food drive, came together to deliver food to the elderly at a time when they might not be able to go out for their own groceries. ElderHelp of San Diego was able to double the work with Santee Santas with food deliveries to Santee seniors. Meals on Wheels helped by delivering home delivered meals to homebound Santee Seniors who may not be able to go to the store themselves. Crisis House provided emergency housing to homeless individuals. And finally, the Cameron Family YMCA and the Boys & Girls Clubs provided coronavirus-safe child care while many parents had to work.

We thank all of the amazing citizens who have volunteered their time to keep these wonderful organizations going to help our community. Santee couldn’t do it without all of you!

Lightn’ Things Up

For the past 6 months, Hot Yoga Santee has been the embodiment of the strength and resiliency they teach. When open, their full range of classes include heated and non-heated yoga, strength training, cardio, conditioning, and cardio-yoga fusion classes. In the midst of COVID-19 closures, they’ve transitioned to a full line of online classes, initiated outdoor classes in local parks, and recently reopened their studio to smaller focused instruction—all with the goal of keeping Santee fit.

Co-owner Lisa Barlow noted that they now have the best of both scenarios. “Our in-person classes allow us to tailor flows and workouts based on those clients, and we also have all these unexpected offerings online so people can keep moving while indoors.”

Co-owners Lisa Barlow and John Szczepanowski opened Hot Yoga Santee three years ago because they saw Santee as a young community interested in being active and fit, and this was a missing piece in local fitness offerings. As a veteran-owned

business, they are heavily involved in giving back to the veteran community, and are active in the Warrior-Yoga Program, which provides scholarships for veterans to become certified yoga instructors.

Pups n’ Parks

Animal Control As an essential service provider, San Diego Humane Society quickly modified operations so that we could stay open, and stay safe. Most of our services at our three campuses in Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego are now curbside and by appointment only in order to promote social distancing. We are also responding to an incredible need to help pet families with free pet food. In fact, last month, we reached one million pet meals distributed since the start of the pandemic.

As a Humane Officer in the field, we are taking precautions and wearing personal protective equipment. While we’ve seen fewer stray animals because more people

are staying home, animals still need us — especially wildlife. Spring is baby-season and this year has been very busy for wildlife rescue calls.

Because Santee is a small and close knit community, we as Humane Officers have become familiar with our community members, which enables us to better serve Santee residents.

Day-to-day, we assist the public with reuniting animals and their owners, helping injured wildlife, protecting communities from public nuisance and dangerous dogs, assisting Sheriff ’s Deputies when needed and protecting animals from abuse and neglect.

“Honestly, it just feels surreal, just because with everything that has happened, it has been so crazy that Chick Fil-A was considered essential. But, as soon as we were given that title, just seeing everyone’s reaction to us still being open, like it was obvious to see why. Everyone has been impacted by this entire thing. We are not just meeting people that live in this community, but people that own businesses that have really felt this impact.

As soon as I asked my boss what we could do for our community, he was like ‘yeah, we already helped Grossmont, and gave all the essential hospital workers a whole bunch of sandwiches.’

Chick Fil-A isn’t just about helping our (local) community with those that come through this drive-thru, but I love that they are taking the extra step to help those that are on the frontline. The Luu Family have owned Style Cleaners and Alterations since 2012.

Before they opened their business, they looked at many other possible locations all over San Diego County and decided to start their business in Santee based on the welcoming they felt from Santee residents, who make up most of their customers, and also appreciated the sense of community.

Even though the prior owners did not take great care of the business, they knew Santee was the right location for them.

The coronavirus pandemic has slowed their business since more people are working from home and don’t need their working attire dry cleaned or laundered as frequently. In response to the pandemic, Charlene Luu used her clothes designing and tailoring skills to start making masks to donate to the UCSD medical facilities and later to Rady’s Children’s Hospital. Eventually, Charlene began making masks to sell at Style Cleaners & Alterations and has made more than 1,000 masks in many different sizes, styles and colors, including masks for children. The masks have been selling well and have helped to make up some of the decrease in laundry and dry-cleaning business since the beginning of the pandemic.
