Greetings, Sanger, June is the month when we take a moment to honor our fathers, step-fathers, or other significant male influencers/role models in our lives. Many of us can recall the various times throughout our lives when they pushed us to do more, be better, and supported our dreams. As I reflect on the purpose of Father’s Day and the mentors in my life, I am reminded of our own responsibility to be the same role models to not only our children but to our friends and loved ones.

Throughout history, we find multiple accounts of courageous men who stepped out and dared to do what others were afraid to do or said couldn’t be done. Where would we be if the great men of history had not stepped up and dared to do the impossible? Without Thomason Jefferson, there would be no Declaration of Independence. Winston Churchill led Britain, standing alone against Nazi Germany, through their darkest hours during World War II. Jacques Cousteau plumbed the depths of the oceans, and Yuri Gagarin was the first to experience the vastness of our galaxy uncoupled from the earth. These men understood that all long journeys begin with a few small steps and that every challenge is an opportunity to achieve the things you never thought you could achieve.

Imagine a world where we were all looked up to by our friends, family, and peers, just like many of us look up to our dads. How much better could things be if we encouraged each other to take chances, helped each other when we fell, and if we cheered for each other like Texans cheer for their hometown football team on Friday night?

As we honor our fathers and male role models in our lives this month, I challenge all of us to be better. Support each other through the impossible. Help your neighbors, support our local businesses, and continue to encourage our City leaders to push the limits to make Sanger more than we ever dreamed possible.

Ricky grew up in Oak Cliff, a suburb of Dallas with a current population of just over 30,000 people. Ricky’s mom remarried before his Junior year of high school, and with the new marriage and employment, the newlywed couple moved their blended family to Sanger.

Having visited multiple times, Ricky knew Sanger was night and day different from Oak Cliff. Still, he struggled through the transition.

Coming from the outskirts of Dallas, where the streets were never empty, and there was never a lack of something to do, Ricky never quite felt like he fit in.

He recalled, “I was so excited to leave for college. I was offered the chance to serve as a Resident Advisor for my dormitory. They told me if I accepted the role, I would have to leave for Texas Tech early. I jumped at the chance.”

Being the typical college attendee, Ricky changed his major a couple of times.

He started in Petroleum Engineering. By his sophomore year, he had moved on to Agricultural Economics. Life in Lubbock agreed with Ricky. Soon he was making friends and enjoying life moving at a faster pace. Ricky recalled how he and his buddies would hang out and go to the football games. It was during this time that Patrick Mahomes was also in attendance. Ricky told me, “Initially, no one knew who Mahomes was. Then in 2015, he suddenly became a star. It is funny when I look back to when no one knew his name and see where he is now. To me, he is just someone that went to the same college that I did.”

After his sophomore year, Ricky decided to take a break from college. Liking Lubbock, he went to work for O’Reilly’s Auto Parts. After work, he spent much of his free time doing audio engineering for aspiring musician hopefuls. In 2016, desiring to be closer to his old friends and family, he moved back and settled in Denton.

In 2018, at the advice of Ricky’s sister’s husband, Ricky applied for a Public Works position with the City of Sanger. He was hired and went to work in the Water Division. Not being one to settle for very long and being someone who is constantly trying to do more, a position opened in Customer Service, so he applied and got the role, and that is where you can find him today.

What’s next for Ricky? Laughing, he said, “Maybe I will be City Manager.” “On a more serious note, I would like to go back to school and finish my degree.

Other than that, I’ll have to see what comes next.”

Lake Ray Roberts State Park is just 3 miles east of the heart of Sanger on FM 455. The lake offers a bit of something for everyone.

On the water, you can swim at one of the beach areas (no lifeguards on duty), paddle, or wet a hook in our kids’ fishing pond or the lake. Or enjoy quieter pursuits: photography, nature watching, or simply relaxing!

Ray Roberts Lake State Park has nine units. Three offer recreation and overnight facilities: Johnson Branch, Isle du Bois and Jordan. The Greenbelt Corridor offers trails, fishing and more.

Six satellite units have boat ramps.

The full-service Lake Ray Roberts Marina is at the Sanger unit; Lone Star Lodge and Marina is at the Jordan unit.

Stay at one of the many campsites or reserve a room at Lone Star Lodge. They have group walkin campsites, four picnic pavilions overlooking the lake, and meeting rooms at Lone Star Lodge.

Fish the 29,000-acre Ray Roberts Lake. Anglers catch largemouth bass, crappie, white bass and catfish here. The current lake record for largemouth bass is 15.18 pounds. The lake offers boat ramps, a marina, a fishing pier and fish cleaning stations. Remember, you can fish from the shore or a pier in a state park without a fishing license!

Lake Ray Roberts Marina: This full-service marina has boat storage and a boat repair shop. The marina sells and rents boats and motors, sells fuel and rents boat slips. Lone Star Lodge Marina: The only marina on the east side of Lake Ray Roberts with outdoor electricity available in the parking lot to charge your boat batteries. Explore the trails. The 20-mile multiuse Greenbelt Corridor runs from the Ray Roberts Dam to Lake Lewisville, along the Elm Fork Branch of the Trinity River. Horse riders can use 12 miles of the trail, while 10 miles are for hike and bike use only. Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois have multiuse trails, some of which are paved.

eet Ramie Hammonds, Director of Development Services. Ramie is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. She has a heart as big as Texas, especially when caring for animals. Not just the dog and cat variety, but Ramie has a soft spot for all animals. Currently, she is fostering Hank, an opossum! You read that right, an Opossum. She found him without his mother when he was so small that she had to feed him from a bottle. During her first few weeks of caring for Hank, she brought him to work with her so she could care for him and keep him warm throughout the day.

Now that he is getting bigger, Hank spends his days waiting for “mom” to get home in his two-story opossum condo.

Everything about Ramie’s story is a bit unique, especially by today’s standards. She was born and raised right here in Sanger, Texas. She has an enormous family support structure. Ramie’s mom, one of 7 children, and dad, one of 8 children, met in Pilot Point when they were kids. They fell in love, married, and raised four beautiful kids! Following her family tradition, Ramie met her now-husband and long-ago high school sweetheart, Mitch, on the square in Pilot Point. Ramie recalled, “He asked me out, and I told him no.” One of Ramie’s close friends had shown an interest in Mitch, and she was certainly not going to cause a rift between them over a boy. She told me, “Mitch was persistent. A few days later, he asked again, and I again said no.” On Mitch’s 3rd attempt, Ramie discovered that her friend had nothing more than a fleeting crush on Mitch, and she had already moved on to showing interest in someone else; Ramie finally said, “Yes.” That was more than 37 years and three kids ago. Today they are still as crazy about each other as they were in the beginning.

Ramie spent all of her school years right here in Sanger. She attended Sanger High School, and shortly after graduation; she went to work for the Sanger ISD. She spent 17 years working for the SISD. Her children were then grown up and ready to start their adult lives, so Ramie didn’t have any other ties to the school system. An opportunity came available with the City of Denton Building Department. Not confident she would get the position, Ramie decided to apply anyway. Fate would have her get the job, so she spent the next nine years working for the City of Denton.

About five years ago, Ramie became interested in working closer to home. She discovered a position with the City of Sanger similar to what she was doing in Denton and applied. Now, five years later, she is our Director of Development Services.

Ramie and her husband have a home on 30 acres here in Sanger. Her love for animals shows when she describes her home. They have horses, cattle, ducks, and chickens. Of course, she has dogs, and then there is Hank. Recently Hank got a close friend to play with. Knowing that Ramie had already taken in one opossum, her neighbors brought one they found in their barn over for her to care for. Until she can figure out if the new addition is a boy or a girl, she calls her new friend, Cranky. Being a bit older than Hank was when she got him, Cranky doesn’t know what a great life he is set to live.

So, what will become of Hank? Ramie swears that she intends to return him to the wild. I have to say that I am less confident. How do you let go of something you have cared for so deeply? Hank has it pretty great. He is litter box trained and gets a regular diet of watermelon and other fruit.

Hank’s favorite thing to eat (other than watermelon) is dog food. However, if she does set him free and one day you see an opossum that is not hissing at you and wants to climb in your lap, don’t be scared. It’s probably, Hank!

Ramie’s office is very much a home away from home. When you enter, it feels peaceful, almost like a meditation room. She has flowers and beautiful wall art. She even has a pink Christmas tree that she keeps decorated year-round. Her office almost feels like a setting for a Hallmark movie.

Nestled over in the corner lives her Beta fish. The setting is made complete by the soft floral scent that makes you want to sit down and stay awhile. And she always welcomes her guests. She has two Queen Anne style, soft leather chairs for you to curl up in.

Wealth of Physicians for Sanger

Since the establishment of Sanger in 1886, the community was always fortunate for the physicians that served the people of Sanger and surrounding areas.

died in 1897 and is buried at the Bolivar Cemetery.

The Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad built their tracks in Purcell, Oklahoma; thus, a station was established in Sanger as a water stop for the steam engines. The cattle owners began herding the cattle into Sanger to ride the rails to market, and thus the town of Sanger was officially established in 1886.

The town began to grow with the businesses needed for these cattle drivers. F.M. Ready opened a hotel, became postmaster, and the two physicians of Bolivar moved to the newly developing town.

Dr. George D. Lain moved from Bolivar to Sanger in 1900 after practicing in Bolivar since 1892. He attended St. Louis Medical School from 1885-86, returned to Bolivar, and taught school for one year. The doctor was teaching and ministering to the sick in the area but was persuaded to quit the teaching position and focus entirely on the area’s medical needs. Lain also owned the drugstore in Bolivar, and as all pioneer doctors, he rode over the land attending to his patients. Lain and his family moved to Sanger and bought the home of Dr. E. W. H. Shelburne of Sanger, who had been elected Dr. George to the Texas State Legislature.

There is not much information about Dr. Shelburne and his practice in the area. Lain’s home was just west of the Methodist Church.

Dr. Ervin L. Howard was the first physician to relocate to Sanger from the Bolivar community. Dr. Howard lived in Pope County, Arkansas, enlisted in the war, and fought in Pea Ridge’s Battle in 1862. After the war ended, the doctor and his wife came to Texas as many veterans did. After the establishment of Sanger, Howard built a new home at the corner of Bolivar and Fifth Street. Dr. Howard

In 1910 Sanger had several cases of typhoid fever. Previously there had been 25-30 cases of typhoid, which was attributed to the water supply system. The addition of a new water system corrected this. There was an influenza epidemic in 1918, and the physicians of Sanger spent many hard hours traveling the surrounding areas attending to the ill. During this time, it was reported there were funerals

During the early 1800s, the settlement of Bolivar was a thriving community. It was home to three hotels, several stores, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, a church, a gin, a flour mill, and a school for the community’s children. Doctors E.L. (Ervin) Howard and George Lain were community physicians serving patients via their horses throughout the night as needed by seriously ill residents.

every day for 16 straight days. A surgeon from Denton, Dr. J. M. Inge, came to Sanger for emergencies such as those Sanger encountered, and he worked with Dr. Lain on many of the cases, performing surgeries on kitchen tables. Dr. Lain died in 1926 and left five children, one of which was Mrs. Alma Chambers, who became quite a historian of Sanger’s beginnings. It was reported that Drs. Lain and Howard decided upon moving to Sanger that one would cover the eastern portion of the area and the other would cover anything in the western part.

Dr. Samuel Alexander Gotcher was a native of Garza, Texas, now known as Lake Dallas. He was the son of a doctor and brother of a doctor and came to Sanger in 1897 to practice. Dr. Gotcher was quite prolific in many areas other than as a physician. He began practicing medicine in Bartonville, Texas, in 1895 and moved to Sanger upon his marriage to Willie Sullivan, daughter Dr. Samuel Alexander Gotcher of Jack Sullivan, pioneer resident of Sanger and Denton County. Gotcher graduated from Marion Sims College in St. Louis, Missouri, and later took post-graduate studies at the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Gotcher began experimenting with different drugs for a topical application. He developed Numotizine to treat pneumonia, bronchitis, typhoid fever, and other infections. It was a pink paste formulated in Gotcher’s home, which is still in existence at the northwest corner of Fifth and Plum Streets. The drug was also used in the D. Lain treatment of livestock. This drug was later advertised only for livestock use and was produced in Hobart, Oklahoma. This ointment is still available for purchase.

He was very inventive and developed a small piece of equipment for keeping his feet warm while traveling the countryside in the cold winters. He placed coils between two lanterns and connected them with a small hose. Water was passed through the hose from one lantern to the other and was the means of keeping his feet warm.

Dr. Gotcher was also a minister and always carried a bible in the inside pocket of his long, black overcoat. He relocated to Chicago, attended the Moody Bible Institute in 1917, and became an ordained minister. This prolific medicine and the religious man passed away in Chicago in 1922.

Dr. John C. Rice was born in Tennessee and moved to Texas in 1868. He attended school at the Belew School and later Truitt’s Business College. In 1889 he decided to become a physician, graduated from Vanderbilt University, and began practicing medicine in Sanger in 1890. He was the first in Sanger to purchase an automobile. The Rice home was built in 1918

by J.T. Chambers and sold to Dr. Rice three years later. This home is still located in Sanger at the northeast corner of Fifth and Peach Streets. Rice served as a health officer in Sanger and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was the local physician for the Santa Fe Railway and was active in Denton County and the Texas Medical Associations. Rice was a charter member of the First Baptist Church and was a deacon. He taught Sunday school throughout his life. Rice practiced medicine in Sanger through 1939, serving almost 50 years in the community. He died in 1948 after 58 years of practicing in Sanger.

Dr. John M. Sullivan began his practice of medicine in Sanger after returning from medical college. He finished with top honors in his graduating class of 1906 and enrolled in Fort Worth University Medical School, later a part of Baylor University Medical School. Sullivan was a dedicated man to the people of Sanger and was known to get out of bed to attend to the sick and was known to have swum the swiftly rising Elm Creek to get to farmhouses where people needed him. He also would spend the night with a family attending to their sick.

Sullivan was born in 1885. He practiced medicine for 47 years in Sanger and was very civic-minded. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Denton County, and Texas Medical Associations. He was a charter member of the Lions Club of Sanger. It was estimated Dr. John M. Sullivan Sullivan delivered about 3,500 babies but claimed this was a conservative estimate. Dr. Sullivan’s son, John L. Sullivan, became a prominent attorney in Denton and was the City Attorney for Sanger for many years. His office was located in the back of the Palace Drugstore, owned by Buck Bailey, later becoming Lillian’s Drugstore. He passed away in 1982.

A large population still remembers Dr. J. Clyde Chapman of Sanger today. Chapman was born in Gainesville in 1914 and attended pre-med at the University of Texas, and transferred to Baylor University School of Medicine. He graduated from medical school in 1937 in Kirksville, Missouri.

He practiced medicine in Clovis, New Mexico, where he met his wife, Frances Littleton. Upon

moving to Sanger, he operated in the back of Pansy Freeman’s Drugstore as the drugstore was a gathering place and would stay open until 11:30 p.m. to midnight, and the doctor would stay until close. He later opened a small clinic on Bolivar Street near the railroad tracks. In 1962 Chapman, Harold Easley, and Gene Hughes built the Sanger Manor Nursing Home, and he moved his offices to this facility. He donated the small clinic building to operate Sanger’s first library.

If Dr. Chapman ever treated you, you may remember the throat swab that was instrumental in treating nearly every ailment. This throat swab medicine was a formula he developed, and the resident pharmacists of Sanger over the years had the formula and mixed it for his practice.

Penicillin shots were in abundance during these early years of practice. It was the wonder drug of the times. In an article for the Denton Record-Chronicle, Chapman reminisced that he saw between 35 and 60 patients a day. When he began his practice in Sanger, the country was coming out of the Great Depression, and money was scarce. Doctors were often paid in goods, produce, and meat and once received a half-gallon of molasses for delivering a baby.

Dr. Clyde Chapman was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sanger and was a charter member of the Lions Club. In 1956 he was named Outstanding Citizen of Sanger by the Lions Club. The town named the road known as FM 455 within the city limits as Chapman Drive to honor the man that served the citizens of Sanger and surrounding areas. He passed away in 1990 and continued his practice up to his passing.

Sanger, Texas, was most fortunate to have had a wealth of physicians for its citizens. Times have changed, and medicine has become more advanced, but these small-town physicians were instrumental in the community.

Residents whose utility account is in good standing, will be permitted one pick-up per calendar month of up to four cubic yards, at no charge. * Pickups will be made on Wednesdays. Only one pickup per calendar month permitted. * Inclement weather may delay your scheduled pickup. * You must schedule your brush pick-up by 5:00 PM the Friday prior to your pickup. * Pickups can be scheduled using our free app “Sanger Solutions” (preferred method) or by calling 940-458-2571. Calls can be made M - TH 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM and Friday 7:30 - 11:00 AM. * Brush left on the curb without scheduling a pick-up will not be removed. * Tree limbs larger than 1” in diameter must be cut from the main branch. * Brush must be less than eight (8) feet in length and less than eight (8) inches in diameter. * Place limbs and brush on the curb with the cut side out. Recyclable Guidelines Effective Immediately

Waste Connections received notification from Pratt Industries USA Recycling, whom they utilize for the processing of all of recycling materials, that Pratt can no longer accept any contaminated recycling materials.

Due to the drastic changes in the market pricing materials that had been previously allowed to be delivered to their facility are now under enhanced scrutiny.

New recycle guidelines have been put in place. Drivers will inspect inside the recyle carts to ensure only allowable items are inside. If the recycle cart or bin has trash or other debris, the container WILL NOT be serviced.
