OTE FROM THE CITY MANAGER

On April 4th, 2022, the Sanger City Council voted to approve the Sanger 2040 Comprehensive Plan. Over the coming months and years, you will hear me reference the Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan) whenever talking about the future and growth of Sanger. What is the Comp Plan? In 2020, our community embarked on the momentous effort of developing a modern Comprehensive Plan for our City. Through various public meetings, insight into what you thought was important for the future of Sanger was woven into this Development Plan. The result is a guiding document that defines the vision and growth of the community over the next twenty years. It addresses City-wide and Downtown Development, describes the general location, character, and relationship of future land use, and outlines the public policies governing the City’s future physical, social, and economic development. The Comp Plan will be the framework for decision making; it describes the City’s vision and desired outcomes and outlines the steps that can be taken to achieve them over time. With the approval of the new Comp Plan, the City Council also approved the new branding for the City. You will soon see the new approved logo and color pallet. The key objective for the new brand was to, first and foremost, have the character of our roots. Additionally, our new brand needed to inspire, feel approachable, and show progress & growth. As you begin to see the new branding roll out, please let us know how you like it. It is no secret that growth is coming, and I am excited about Sanger’s future. Without growth, we could never achieve the vision that you, our community, told us you wanted. As we grow, the Comp Plan will ensure that we grow smartly and remain mindful of the vision for Sanger now and for decades to come.

SANGER POLICE DEPARTMENT The Sanger Police Department is proud to announce the promotion of Officer Cole Thompson to the rank of Patrol Sergeant. Sergeant Thompson is a five-year law enforcement veteran and has been employed with the Sanger Police Department since February 2020. Sergeant Thompson has his Advanced Peace Officer Certificate, and he is the Department’s Firearms Instructor and a member of the Department’s Field Training Program. Recently, Sergeant Thompson received the American Legion Post# 268, 2020 Sanger Police Department Officer of the Year Award. “I am confident that Sergeant Thompson will make a great addition to the Department’s supervisor team,” said Sanger Police Chief Waylan Rhodes.

Meet Pneuma. She is an 18 month old boxer. Pneuma is in training to become a therapy dog. She already knows many commands and her owner says that she will sound the alarm for stranger danger if someone approaches the house. Clearly she loves being outside in the sunshine. She has a favorite toy cow that is lovingly named “Moo Moo.” - Owner wishes to remain anonymous.
National Pet Month April is National Pet Month - A celebration of the benefits that our pets bring to our lives and to the joy and love we bring to theirs. April focuses on some of the important aspects of pet care: heartworm prevention, pet first aid, Lyme disease and prevention cruelty. In this month, we also give a shout-out to National Cat Lady Day (19th), Bulldogs are Beautiful Day (21), Ferret Day (2), Hairball Awareness Day (24), National Therapy Animal Day (30), and Adopt a Shelter Pet Day (30). To celebrate our own fur babies and to increase awareness around their needs, the City of Sanger employees decided to share with you some of our four-legged family members.

The saying goes that “dogs are man’s best friend.” Some would say that other pets are also up to the task. The companionship that animals offer is different from human interaction. As humans, we communicate through speech, touch, and body language. While these forms of communication are welcoming and easy to understand, in some instances, they may not be enough. Sometimes people struggle to say the right thing when what we really need is to be simply there for each other. Because animals cannot talk they are superior to humans in detecting the feelings of others. A pet may be able to offer a level of companionship that is deeper and more satisfying than human interaction.

A poem about pets - Lesley M. Patterson Pets are people, too, just like me and you. They need food in their tummies and lots of beefy yummies. They are little, but their hearts are BIG. They like to go outside, get fresh air, and dig. From big to small, they give their all, And you can play with them with a toy or with a ball. To the special bond between human and pet, always by your side, forever, I’ll bet. Your faithful pet depends on you and all the special things for them that you do. Pets help teach us nature’s true compassion. They do not withhold love, nor with it do they ration. And with our pets, I have no doubt, that we are lucky not to have to live without. A furry friend that’s always happy to see you, from life’s ups and downs and all that people do. It’s quite a sight for sore eyes to behold, because that bond is as special as gold. Always show them love and good measure, and reap each day a true friend to treasure. Children, remember to be good to your pet. Be loving to them, no matter how old they get. Never abandon them or leave them out in the cold or heat, and you’ll have a pet that’s super neat! Always treat them with kindness and love,for they are truly a gift from above! Be understanding and patient with them, because they will be for you. And never, ever forget this, my friend, for pets are people, too.

PARKS AND RECREATION Operations:
The Parks Division continues with our spring clean-up programs within the parks system. The Parks Staff has also been working on the Railroad Park Baseball infields. Porter Parks is also ready for a exciting Spring season.

Reservations fill up quickly and are on a first come first serve basis. You can find our facility rental calendar as well as the reservation forms for the Community Center, Hisotorical Church Building, and all pavilions on our website at www.sangertexas.org under the Parks and Recreation tab.
Recreation:
After a year off because of Covid, the Mother/Son Dance made a strong comeback. On Feb 19th 101 people were in attendance and everyone enjoyed the food, music, dancing and limo rides. Our Sanger, TX Parks & Recreation Facebook page is still experiencing a steady growth. We are up to 3,821 followers for the end of February. Animal Control Officer Sara Sexton
Meet Animal Control Officer Sara Sexton. Sara was born and raised in North Texas and has spent all of her adult life working with or around animals. She has served as the Animal Control Officer in Dallas and Addison, and she worked for a vet clinic and the SPCA. She proudly lives here in Sanger with her two cats and one dog. During a ride-a-long with Sara in late March, I came to understand exactly what an Animal Control Officer does, and I learned a little about Sara, the Sanger Animal Control Officer.

They put out live traps to help catch stray kittens, and when they know of someone who has lost their pet, they are quick to call Sara if they spot the missing animal.
As we drove through each neighborhood on patrol, it became apparent that Sara had spent a great deal of time building relationships with the residents of Sanger. We were stopped many times by different residents so that they could say hello. But more than that, Sara has built relationships with so many people. She knew of residents that had been under the weather, so, in her patrols of the neighborhoods,
We cannot always get a found pet back to its home immediately. In these cases, the City of Sanger partners with All American Dogs in Pilot Point. They are a no-kill shelter. Whenever an animal has to go to AAD, the policy is for them to keep the animal three days before making it eligible for adoption. In

Beyond rescuing a stray pet or assisting with removing the snake in your backyard, Animal Control provides code enforcement that is meant to protect both the animals and their owners. Additionally, Sara spends a great deal of her time educating the public on the laws to protect your animals. For example: • • •

The City of Sanger has a leash law that states that all animals be kept under restraint at all times.
The goal of the Sanger Animal Control Division is to ensure the safety and care of animals as well as the safety of those who might come in contact with your fur baby. All American Dogs
Meet Bob and Meredith Matthews, owners of All American Dogs (AAD) Animal Shelter in Pilot Point. AAD is not a city shelter. It is run by All American Dogs, a private animal control company. AAD provides animal control and code enforcement to over 29 municipalities in the DFW area. They have partnered with Sanger for the last 9 years.
With April being Pet Appreciation month, I contacted Kirk Sissner, Shelter Manager, and asked if he could arrange a behind-the-scenes tour and have someone tell me more about the shelter. Owners Bob and Meredith, along with Kirk and AJ (both Shelter Managers), were more than happy to show off the facility. It was straightforward to understand why instantly. We have all been to pet shelters. I have often walked away feeling very sorry for the animals and their living conditions. This was not the case at All American Dogs. Let me first say that this facility was excellent. The staff has a genuine love for all animals. And the animals that come to AAD are living their best life. I was thrilled to see that currently, they don’t have
a lot of cats. I am a cat person, terrified that I would get there, feel sorry for all the cats, and try to bring them all home. These little guys and gals are living their best life. The animals don’t spend all their time behind bars. Every animal (all 89 – cats and dogs combined - as of the day of my visit) gets human playtime every day. If you are in the market for a cat, might I suggest Twinkie? He is about five years old and a complete lover. He is a high attention cat that wags his tail and sits. Adorable! AAD has been in business for just over 14 years. This amazing facility sits on 12+ acres. Owners Bob and Meredith have been steadily building and improving the shelter. Currently, they are in the process of adding an additional cat room and adding a brand-new building for their dogs. Additionally, as the new facilities come online, the older buildings are being remodeled to provide the animals with the best housing facilities available. AAD is considered a no-kill shelter. Animals don’t get put down just because they have been there a long time. They boast a 90+% adoption rate. They are careful as they grow their facility not to grow so big that it negatively affects the animals under their care. They partner with Petco to show and get their animals into forever homes. Additionally, they partner

with Adopt a Pet and Miles of Hope Animal Rescue to list all of their animals online. If you visit All American Dogs, you will notice they have some unexpected pets on the property. Their primary focus is on domesticated animals (dogs and cats). However, they do have three pot-belly pigs that are crazy cute. These pigs act a lot like dogs. They love pats on the head, and if you rub their bellies, you are certain to have a friend for life. They share a very large field with a donkey and several goats. Upon entering the facility’s main office, you will notice a couple of very large fish tanks. They don’t necessarily take fish but having the tank did originate from a surrender. Now they breed Cichlids and sell them. Next to the front desk, Kada, a beloved bearded dragon, is nestled in her habitat. Don’t go there to adopt her. The Matthew’s and staff have decided she now belongs to the shelter. She is exceptionally cared for and spends many hours outside her cage being loved by everyone.
AAD offers many services. First and foremost, you can find your new family member at the facility. They encourage
visitors to call before coming to the property. They have a pet surrender program, and concerned residents can file a code enforcement complaint or report an animal control concern. Additionally, when your 4-legged family member crosses over the rainbow, they provide cremation services along with a memorial cast of your furbaby’s paw print.
While the animals at All American Dogs are living great lives, they all would love to go to forever homes. Right now, they have 70+ dogs that need homes. I was fortunate to get to spend time with all of them. One, in particular, Wilson, a six-year-old American Bulldog Mix, stole my heart. This little guy is super friendly and affectionate. He is not an easily excitable dog. While all the dogs around me were barking and vying for my attention, he came up close and sat by me while waiting for me to notice him. AJ, Shelter
Manager, informed me that he is always very chill. He explores his area then likes to come to be by your side. According to his profile, he is excellent with other dogs, great with kids, and house-trained. When you adopt a pet from AAD, it will be 100% up-to-date with its shots; it will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and tested and treated if positive for heartworms. While the shelter doesn’t do an FBI check on you before you can adopt a dog, they do want to meet you and talk to you. Their goal is to make every effort to place the animal in a forever home. They want to make sure that the adopters of the animals are ready for a furbaby and that the baby they are getting fits nicely into their lifestyle. ATHAN KIRKLAND FAMILY AND THE PINK HOUSE HISTORY
For those that may have wondered about the history of the “Pink House” on the northeast corner of Elm and Fifth Streets, the daughter of Nathan Patrick Kirkland, Miss Bessie Kirkland, lived in the home for her entire adult life.
Submitted by Sanger Area Historical Society using information from an interview with Bessie Kirkland written by Eunice Sullivan Gray.
The oldest child, Emmett, built the first garage in Sanger in 1913 (where the child care business is now located) after their home was relocated, which later became the LeGear Ford Motor Company, and eventually an auto repair shop owned by several local men for many years. In this block on Bolivar Street, Dr. Wall’s dentistry office was located, and at one time, the Sanger Courier operated in this block but later located two blocks east.
Nathan Kirkland was a very active businessman and delved into the real estate business. Kirkland and his family consisted of his wife Lou Rainey Dodd Kirkland and eleven children; seven lived to adulthood: Emmett, Eugene, Ray, E.L. Berry, Cashier of the First Walter, Jeff, Ola, and Bessie. Bessie was salutatorian of her graduating class of 1917. Many memories of Sanger by Bessie included the “Chautauqua Week” in the early days. The park area was called The Square, and advance tickets were sold, and culture came to Sanger. Various programs were given, sometimes a lecture, a musical program, and a Shakespearean play. This week was always set aside and never conflicted with the revival meetings that would last most of the summer for two weeks at a time. There was no television to compete with these significant religious events. Churches holding revivals included Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Landmark Baptists, and the Assembly of God. In closing the interview with Miss Bessie, she was most appreciative of the Modern Era Department of Wednesday Club helping make her home more comfortable with the gift of a new television. Her Sunday School class provided a hot meal each day for two weeks after she was injured from a fall. Sanger was indeed a helping community. Miss Bessie Kirkland passed away in January 1984 at the age of 85. As you drive by this home across from the City Park, may you reflect on the history that this home held over the years.

As people increasingly read and listen to books on their smartphone or tablet, they’re discovering one of the best resources is their local public library. Sanger library cardholders can access a wide selection of popular digital ebooks, audiobooks, and videos free of charge. With our library card, members of the community are fortunate to have three different digital collections: Overdrive, Freading, and Hoopla. For this issue, Overdrive is in the spotlight.
OverDrive Overdrive is probably the most well-known since it has been around for quite a while, and many libraries around the country offer the service. Its award-winning reading app, Libby, is available for download through the App Store and Google Play. We share this collection with other libraries in the North Texas Independent Digital Consortium, which has allowed us to provide more titles than we could afford to purchase alone. The disadvantage is that most items are limited to only one user at a time, so you may have to wait to check out the more popular titles. The hare was said to be the symbol of the Pagan Goddess of Spring and Fertility. • More than 1.5 million Cadbury Creme Eggs are produced every day. (500 million Creme Eggs every year) • The act of painting eggs originates from a Ukrainian tradition. For countless generations, Ukrainians have been decorating eggs as a calling out to the Gods and Goddesses of health and fertility. • The world’s largest Easter egg weights in at 5000 lbs. Standing at 31ft tall and 18ft wide is the world’s largest Easter egg. Found in Vegreville, Alberta, Canada, the egg weighs a hefty 5000 lbs and took 12,000 hours to complete. • Pretzels used to be associated with Easter. Pretzels are associated with Easter because the twists resemble arms crossing in prayer. From the 1950s, it was tradition for Germans to eat a pretzel and a hard-boiled egg for dinner on Good Friday. • In 2007, an Easter egg sold for 9 million pounds or $11,702,115. Possibly the world’s most expensive egg was sold at Christie’s in London for £9 million in 2007, breaking Faberge records.
