Citizen Engagement

THE CITY OF SANFORD offers an annual Sanford Citizens’ Academy program to residents and community members.

The mission of the Academy is to educate residents about how their city government functions. At the end of the program, participants have a greater understanding of how and why municipal decisions are made.

The ultimate goal is for residents to be more engaged in and knowledgeable about the decision making process.

Citizens Academy graduates become key ambassadors of information who help benefit our city and its people in immeasurable ways.

The program runs for 12 weeks with each week featuring a different department, including the police department and the municipal golf course. Some standout sessions include trips to the Raleigh Exec Jetport, Sanford Fire Department, and the Central Carolina Enterprise Park.

Since its inception in 2014, the program has had nearly 100 graduates and continues to attract newcomers and life-long residents who see the benefit of this unique education option.
