Enhancing Salisbury’s Environment The City of Salisbury sees the ecological health of the city as a vital component to maintaining and improving quality of life for our residents. This is supported by our ongoing commitment to strong environmental management, rehabilitation works and focus on sustainability.

The City of Salisbury recently hosted a forum on grassland ecosystems as part of our ongoing work to revegetate Council corridors, while this year’s Streetscape Renewal Program is progressing well.

The program is Council’s way of, in consultation with the community, renewing our Street Tree Assets and contributing to a healthy environment throughout the City. This is one the few capital investments that councils can make that appreciate in value over time.

Outlined inside this edition of Salisbury Snapshot are a series of events and programs designed to improve local green spaces while also focusing on community education. These include tree planting events as well as an all new community fruit tree program for Heyford Reserve.

These initiatives build on Council’s ongoing efforts to improve the ecological health of the area, which includes community education, leading by example and strategic partnerships, reducing waste, investing in solar energy, encouraging recycling and providing recycled water.

Snapshot Is Going Digital!

Welcome to the final hard copy edition of Salisbury Snapshot which, from August 2014, is being converted to an all new digital publication!

The change of format will see Salisbury Snapshot become a bi-monthly digital publication simply titled Snapshot.

It will continue to be available for free and will be accessible via email subscription.

Snapshot is a great way for the community to read and learn about ongoing initiatives, works and programs relating to health and wellbeing, learning, environment and sustainability, recreation and infrastructure within the City of Salisbury. The move to a digital platform was endorsed by Elected Members at the February 2014 council meeting.

A Message from Salisbury’s Mayor

Creating a beautiful, green and healthy urban environment for our residents is something the City of Salisbury takes great pride in, while also encouraging participation from the community.

We also look at volunteering as a way of learning new skills, meeting new people and building your confidence, and of course, feeling good about contributing to your local community! There are so many different ways to become involved in your local community, so why not get out there and give it a go?

Inside this edition, you can learn more about some of our projects, which include the continuing maintenance and development of our street trees, and revegetation and planting events.

If passive viewing is more your style, remember our fantastic annual event the City of Salisbury Watershed Art Prize is exhibiting shortlisted works from 2 May to 30 May. I am proud to say that, for the first time, our Art Prize includes a young emerging artist’s section, which is a great way for South Australian artists of all levels to showcase their work. The competition focuses on raising awareness of water as a precious resource and significant environmental issue.

While Council is working hard on these and other initiatives, volunteering plays an important role in managing the local environment, which was on show during Clean Up Australia Day activities on Saturday 2 March. This annual event is always well supported within Salisbury. The City of Salisbury greatly appreciates the efforts of local volunteers and – as outlined inside this edition – hopes everyone in the community will take the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ during National Volunteer Week 2014, which runs from 12 to 18 May.

The Art Prize is a wonderful way of showcasing our Council’s and the community’s commitment to sustainable environmental management practices through an entertaining and thoughtprovoking medium. I hope everyone takes the opportunity to view these works during the month of May.

Local Knowledge At The Touch Of A Button Do you ever get confused over which bin you should put out on what day? Or see an issue in your community like graffiti or a pothole and think about reporting it, but have completely forgotten by the time you arrived home?

Recognising the need for a single smartphone application to service the entire state and remove the need for each Council to develop their own, the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA) has released the My Local Services App. My Local Services App is a specialist smart phone application that allows residents to find out information on vital services or even report a problem in the community right from their phone. A collaborative effort which shares data between multiple councils around South Australia, the smart phone app automatically knows where you are, what Council area you are in and provides you with the information you need right there and then. This is particularly helpful if you find yourself in an unfamiliar council area.

Featuring local events, parks, information about local Elected Members and of course the most pressing issue of all, when you need to put your bin out, the app puts local information at your fingertips.

The reporting function has been designed to allow you to take a photo of an issue with your smart phone, pinpoint the exact location you are in and let you add in additional information that you feel is important. Please include your contact details in the additional notes area.

The app is available for both iPhones and Android devices and can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store for iPhones users or from the Google Play Store for Android owners.

Rates Payments Made Simple The City of Salisbury is now offering a new service that will allow your letterbox to never see another rates notice.

The City of Salisbury is committed to maintaining effective service delivery and is mindful with the increasing use of computer and mobile devices that customers want to transact more and more electronically. It is very convenient, has a lower cost than sending a paper account which helps to keep rates low, and is friendlier on the environment.

Revegetating Council Corridors

Tree Planting Events: Can You Dig It?

The City of Salisbury is already a leader in stormwater management through its extensive wetland systems, and is now working towards becoming a leader and innovator in revegetation strategies and restoration techniques.

As part of our continuing efforts to rehabilitate and beautify the community, the City of Salisbury is holding a number of planting events throughout July.

The City of Salisbury endorsed the Biodiversity Corridors Plan in 2010 with the main aim to restore pre-European vegetation conditions throughout five significant corridors (Little Para River, Dry Creek, Escarpment, Coast & Edinburgh/Helps Road Drainage Corridor). These corridors serve to link discrete areas of native vegetation and important habitat, allowing for a continuous corridor of movement for flora and fauna species.

Other aims include enhancing the visual experience along each of the corridors, creating opportunities for community involvement, and reducing urban and climate change pressures on biodiversity. As part of this work, the City of Salisbury hosted the ‘Fire Management within Grassland Ecosystems’ Forum on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 March. This was well attended by 140 expert fire management officers, grassland practitioners, researchers and ecologists from around Australia.

The City of Salisbury is grateful to each of the presenters for the knowledge, skills and experience they brought to the event and their involvement contributed greatly to the depth and breadth of the industry event. The City of Salisbury was overwhelmed by the large number of registrations it received and particularly the large number of interstate delegates that attended.

Fantastic feedback has been received regarding the event and strong support for a similar industry event to be held again in 2016.

Community members are welcome and encouraged to attend these planting days, which will be held on the following dates: Sunday 6 July from 10am to 1pm The City of Salisbury is partnering with Conservation Volunteers Australia for a planting event at the Edinburgh Biodiversity Corridor (off Waterloo Corner Road in Springbank Waters, Burton).

This is a significant corridor for the City of Salisbury and the project aims to recreate pre-European vegetation associations that existed throughout the Northern Adelaide Plains.

Sunday 27 July 10am to 12pm The City of Salisbury will be holding a community planting event for National Tree Day at Upper Little Para Reserve in Salisbury Heights.

Little Para River is a major corridor for the City of Salisbury and a natural corridor from the foothills to the coast. Meeting location is off Queensborough Drive, Salisbury Heights.

Tasty Treats From Community Trees The City of Salisbury is trialing fruit plantations in reserves as a community asset for future generations.

In 2013, Council approved a plan to upgrade 14 local reserves to increase community pride and provide more opportunities for people to visit their local park. Heyford Reserve on Catalina Avenue in Parafield Gardens is the first park to be upgraded under that program.

Extensive community engagement was carried out that involved local residents and included students from the Parafield Gardens Primary School. The final plans presented to the community and endorsed by Council included the provision of more grassed areas, more play equipment, a refurbished tennis court and a new community fruit orchard.

This is particularly important with back yard fruit production diminishing as more families opt for low water and low maintenance back yards. The community surrounding Heyford Reserve will have the opportunity to select and then plant fruit trees including a mixture of citrus, pommes, stonefruit and nuts. Species selected will be suitable for the climatic conditions and a showcase for what could be grown at home in the area.

The provision of fruit trees is a point of difference for Heyford Reserve and recognises that Salisbury was historically a fruit bowl for greater Adelaide featuring extensive almond an orange orchards. There was even a local cultivar of oranges grown across the plains known as the Salisbury Orange.

Healthier Trees Through Streetscape Renewal Street trees play a leading role in the ecosystem across the City of Salisbury, and an important part of their management is Council’s Streetscape Renewal Program.

Council uses this program to renew its Street Tree Assets and contribute to a healthier environment throughout the City, which is one the few capital investments that councils can make that appreciate in value over time.

Healthy green spaces have many positive effects on the environment in which we live by providing shade, improving microclimate, ensuring comfortable pedestrian environments, contributing to urban biodiversity and improving habitat for birds and animals. They can also reduce costs to the community by ensuring trees are healthy and require less maintenance.

The streets that form part of the 2013/14 Streetscape Renewal Program are listed below. Consultation has already taken place for these and tree removals should be occurring to facilitate new trees being planted this coming winter season.

Creating Opportunities for Youth Through Education

The Power To Help

The Mawson Centre’s ‘Where to from here?’ program is offering young people aged 17 to 24 who are not engaged in learning or employment a chance to overcome barriers and achieve positive educational outcomes. Eligible people may include those who have not achieved adequate ATAR scores, who have dropped out of high school and not engaged in learning, or who face intergenerational bias presenting barriers to education.

The City of Salisbury greatly appreciates the hard work and dedication of its enthusiastic and invaluable community of volunteers.

The course will commence with a career assessment tool administered via UniSA, which will help give students career direction according to their interests and skills. Participants will then be presented a range of options to identify pathways and work to overcome barriers. Positive mentoring will also be part of this course together with getting participants ‘job ready’.

This year’s theme is ‘Celebrate the power of volunteering’, with Australia’s six million volunteers forming a workforce that powers many essential community, environmental, sporting, welfare, emergency services, education and cultural services.

Dr Doug McTaggart of the COAG Reform Council recently outlined the widespread benefits of transitioning youth into education and training pathways, stating:

Did you know 12% of the City of Salisbury community is engaged in volunteering? More than 550 people participate in volunteering through Salisbury Council alone. The Council actively promotes and provides opportunities to volunteer via www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/volunteering.

Tablets Putting Seniors In Touch with IT

Join a Social Ride Today

In 2013 the City of Salisbury endorsed the purchase of tablets for use in local libraries and community centres. This resource has been successfully tapped into by the Mawson Centre to enhance and significantly improve an IT program.

Would you like to get back into cycling and explore the trails or quieter roads of Salisbury in the safety of a supportive and encouraging group?

Under ACE grant funding, the Centre was to provide an introductory course on internet and email. Despite extensive advertising, the Centre was unable to secure sound numbers until switching the delivery method to learning internet and email on tablets. Using the IPad and Samsung tablets from the City of Salisbury digital hub, the Centre has been able to reach a far greater audience and the class is now fully booked with a waiting list.

The greatest demand for this program is from seniors within the local community who are struggling with the new IT age. There are many stories coming from the group about how they feel under pressure from family members to connect online, but feel overwhelmed and anxious when they attend other courses.

The feedback has been incredibly positive and students are now learning how to access community and other valuable information online as well as reconnect with their families and friends using social media. Whilst some bring their own tablets, many others borrow those available to work out which tablet they prefer or to learn more about their purpose.

This program has been valuable from a social inclusion perspective and enabled many to overcome isolation issues and build stronger connectivity to their community, not just through the tablet but also through social interaction at the Centre during class.

If the answer is yes, then why not join a Cycle Salisbury Social Rides program? These rides are low level rides (short distance, low difficulty) led by trained Bike SA Volunteers (Ride Leaders) which have participating adults of all ages and in most cases finish with a social chat and coffee.

Participating riders have said: ‘Becoming involved with the Cycle Salisbury Social Rides has given me the confidence to get back on the bike. What a great lot of Gals and Guys I have met along with seeing the many bike trails in Salisbury’ – Kathie.

‘Get on that bike of yours and enjoy the great outdoors – ride with Cycle Salisbury’ – John and Val. ‘It’s great to be able to go on a ride that is achievable for beginners – and a good opportunity to meet others who enjoy cycling’ – Helen.

Why not get the whole family involved, as the Cycle Salisbury program also has specific family rides called ‘BoB’ (Burton on Bikes). These rides are a regular (monthly) family ride that will help children (who must be accompanied by a riding adult) develop riding skills and become more familiar with riding in the local area. Each ride will start at a playground and will include en route other playgrounds or places of interest to the younger riders. These rides are led and supported by Bike SA trained Ride Leaders.

Salisbury Craft & Hobby Fair The Salisbury Craft & Hobby Fair 2014 will feature more than 140 stalls including woodwork, spinning and weaving, teddy bears, glassware, dolls, jewellery, pottery, decoupage, toys, statues, pictures and framing, temporary tattoos, sweets, demonstrations, rides, food and much more.

The 2013 Fair saw more than 5,000 customers through the doors over the three days, and with such a wide variety of stalls there’s something to cater for everyone’s tastes and interests – even the kids! There are a few stall sites still available for 2014.

The Fair will be held at Parafield Gardens Recreation Centre (corner Kings Road and Martins Road, Parafield Gardens), from 10.00am to 4.00pm over the June long weekend (7, 8 and 9 June). Entry is just $4 for adults, $3 concession, and under 15’s are free! There is also free parking available.
