As the Program Coordinator, I enjoy planning a varied lineup of programs for each season. Our staff approaches each semester with the same vision: provide as many enriching educational opportunities as possible for learners by welcoming back previous instructors and opening the door to new facilitators with knowledge to share. What a joy it is to once again, offer over 20 multi-week courses! OVERVIEW: Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill (LL@RH) – Where Curiosity Never Retires – is an inclusive community of adults, age 50+, who share knowledge through unique educational opportunities and local excursions. Each semester, outstanding volunteer facilitators provide programs covering a range of engaging topics, experiences and skills related to personal growth, enrichment and more. The only prerequisite is a curiosity to learn!

REGISTRATION: Registration begins Wednesday, February 21, 2024 (see times below). All adults 50+ in the community are welcome to participate in these exciting educational opportunities.

There are THREE easy ways to register: 1. Register Online (beginning at 10:30 AM on February 21) – Visit cityofrockhill.com/ lifelonglearning and select the “PROGRAM REGISTRATION” icon. See page 45 for complete online registration instructions.

2. Register In-Person – Attend the Spring Semester Kickoff Social on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 9:30 AM-10:30 AM (see page 2). *REGISTRATION OPENS AT 10:30 AM. 3. Register By Phone (beginning at 1 PM on Feb. 21 and thereafter) – Call 803-329-5527 or 803-3252568 to register by phone.

General Information WAITLIST POLICY: Due to their popularity, programs often reach capacity quickly. Registration limits are set by the facilitator’s preference or space availability. Do not be discouraged by a waitlist! Instead, see the list as a tool for communicating a request for more seats in a program or for scheduling an additional section of the program. Adding your name to a waitlist is the most effective way to communicate this demand! Any openings that become available will go to individuals in the order in which they are entered on the waitlist. Waitlist communications may come directly from LL@RH staff OR as an autogenerated email from the City of Rock Hill with the subject: Waitlist Notification. You must respond to this notification within 24 hours to secure your spot in the program. With over 50 programs open for registration, be prepared with second and third choice options when you register.

CANCELATIONS: All programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment. If the minimum enrollment is not met one week prior to the start date, the program will be canceled, and fees will be promptly refunded.

If a cancelation of any program must occur, such communication will come via email or phone call.

You will be contacted by email approximately one week prior to the start of your program with the specific location (upstairs or downstairs) and information as to which parking lot at Northside Recreation Center (upper or lower) is most convenient.

OPPORTUNITIES: Many opportunities exist for volunteering with LL@RH. Assist with hospitality; serve as a class host/ hostess who assists facilitators with technology or other needs; welcome participants as a greeter or more. As always, please do the easiest task of all—spread the word about LL@RH to your friends, family and peers!

ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Citizen input is vital to the PRT Department. The individuals on the LL@RH Advisory Committee are active participants who provide input and guidance for the program. The expertise of these individuals is valued and appreciated!

The hope is for these codes to aid in registration, especially for those who register in-person. When you register online, the numbers are sequential although separated by category. In the multi-week descriptions listed on the pages that follow, the courses are listed by days of the week and due to the two-session format, the numbers are not listed chronologically.

MONDAYS 001-BEGINNING UKULELE Dave Cole MONDAYS, 9:30 AM, March 4-April 15 (no class April 1) 6 Weeks: $30; Seats: 12 Take the first steps on a journey that could last the rest of your life! In this course you will study basic Ukulele. The goal is to give you a toehold that can eventually be used as a springboard to much greater accomplishments. You will learn 8-10 chord shapes, as well as several strumming techniques. These will be combined to learn several songs with the goal being you can then learn any song you want to play. You must provide your own ukulele. *Priority registration will be given to those on the Fall 2023 waitlist for Beginning Ukulele.

002-GUIDE TO ESTATE PLANNING Kent Chalmers, Ascendancy Law MONDAYS & TUESDAYS, 9:30 AM, March 4-March 12 2 Weeks, 2x/Week: $20; Seats: 45 Back by popular demand, Kent Chalmers returns for the Estate Planning course. Learn how to ensure your loved ones are protected in the event of incapacity or death. Understand, from a legal perspective, what needs to happen when a loved one passes away.

Learn what your options are for long-term care and when it is time to take action. A time for Q&A will be offered at the end of each class.

003-THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD Joanne Gaskins MONDAYS, 1 PM, March 4-March 25 4 Weeks: $20; Seats: 24

GET TO KNOW JOANNE GASKINS Joanne believes she had the career of her dreams at Northwestern High School where she taught English for 28 years. She enjoys teaching for LL@RH as she can relive her teaching days. Join in a study and discussion of Their Eyes Were Watching God, an American classic by Zora Neale Hurston. A writer for the Saturday Review says this book “belongs in the same category—with that of William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway—of enduring American literature.”

Class participants will follow Janie’s journey to selfhood and happiness through three marriages.

Despite being an African American woman during the Depression in the Jim Crow South, with no education, family, or means, Janie refuses to settle for what everyone she knows feels should make her happy.

TUESDAYS 004-LEARN TO PLAY BRIDGE Barbara O’Connell TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS, 9:30 AM-11:30 AM, March 5-March 21 3 Weeks, 2x/Week: $30; Seats: 12 Whether you are a bridge player who wants to sharpen your game, or a beginner wanting to learn to play, this class is for you! Learn the basics and advance to an intermediate skill level, but, above all, learn to love the game of bridge! *Please note each class will last 2 hours.

005-DOUBLE NINE CAFE Terry Plumb TUESDAYS, 1 PM, March 5-March 26 4 Weeks: $20; Seats: 20 Early in the last century, Ybor City, FL was a major center for the manufacture of handmade cigars.

Thousands of immigrants arrived from Cuba and Sicily to work in multistory factories. Double Nine Dominoes, a favorite pastime of the cigar makers, is still played by their descendants in the social clubs and cafes of Ybor City. This class delves into Ybor City’s rich history and introduces participants to the rules and strategies for Double Nine Dominoes.

PLEASE NOTE: The spring semester operates with two 4-week sessions. The first session is March 4-March 29. The second session is April 8-May 3. As you select your programs, please pay close attention to the start and end dates, along with the start and end times.

006-LEARN TO PLAY PICKLEBALL Nancy Needham TUESDAYS, 1 PM, March 5-March 26 4 Weeks: $20; Participants: 12 With thanks to Ms. Needham, you once again have the opportunity to learn to play pickleball! If you plan to register, please be sure that you can endure mild physical activity, with breaks, for 60-75 minutes. The course meets at Boyd Hill Recreation Center.

Tuesdays

This course is designed for individuals who completed the beginner-level course or who have prior experience in playing the mountain dulcimer. Participants must provide their own instruments. Throughout the course, you will delve into techniques aimed at elevating your playing style. The exploration of chords will enable you to skillfully accompany fellow players or singers, elevating the melody to new heights. Most importantly, participants are guaranteed to derive joy from the delightful experience of engaging with this wonderful instrument!

Multi-Week Courses 015/016-INTRODUCTION TO WATER AEROBICS Susan VanZile TUESDAYS, 10 AM, April 9-April 30 4 Weeks: $20; Participants: 20 This class will offer low-impact water workouts that build muscle strength and boost your energy.

The instructor will lead you through a series of movements using pool noodles, weights and other equipment. The buoyancy of the water is easy on your joints, which makes water aerobics a good choice if you have joint problems, chronic pain or are recovering from an injury. This course will meet at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center and is open to nonmembers of the YMCA who want to try the class before committing to membership. Members of the YMCA are allowed to attend as well. Please choose the correct non-member (015)/member (016) option when registering.

017-LEARN TO PLAY DISC GOLF Austin Adams & Corrie Wooten, Innova Disc Golf TUESDAYS, 1 PM, April 9-April 30 4 Weeks: $20; Participants: 12 Thanks to Innova Disc Golf, this course continues!

WEDNESDAYS 007-CHAIR YOGA Tami Windell WEDNESDAYS, 9:30 AM, March 6-March 27 4 Weeks: $20; Seats: 15 Have you thought about starting a yoga practice but don’t know where to turn? Join this course where the instructor will guide you into a yoga program with the aid of a chair. You will use the security of a chair to bend and flex, reach and stretch! Tami began her own yoga practice in 2009, became a certified instructor in 2017 and added an advanced certification in 2021. She has over 1200 hours of teaching experience in Rock Hill with a focus in Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative and Chair Yoga. Tami assures you she is not a yogi who can turn herself into a pretzel; she is a real person with a real body that sometimes has aches and pains, just like you! Multi-Week Courses 008 / 008H-ROCK HILL HISTORY Pat Grant, Chip Hutchison, Gary Williams WEDNESDAYS, 1 PM, March 6-March 27 4 Weeks: $20; Seats: 50 Embark on a fascinating journey through brandnew history talks that unveil the rich tapestry of Rock Hill's past. From its earliest days to navigating economic survival post the cotton mill era, Pat and Chip will delve into the roots of the Village of Rock Hill. Discover the historical significance of the ancient Nation Ford as the bedrock for settlement in this area. Cathy Rose Hicklin will share insights into her ancestor, James Milton Cherry, a distinguished Founding Father. Stephen Turner will guide us through the economic resurgence following the demise of the cotton mills, shedding light on the construction and subsequent demolition of the Town Center Mall. Pat will highlight the early milestones of the Village of Rock Hill and Gary will provide a glimpse into the future of Rock Hill.

This comprehensive session is your opportunity to intimately acquaint yourself with Rock Hill's journey from its inception to the present day. *Members of Historic Rock Hill should register for 008H. 009-MURDER MYSTERY CLUB—CASE #2 Todd Harland-White WEDNESDAYS 1 PM, March 6-March 27 4 Weeks: $20; Seats: 20 The Murder Mystery Club started in Fall 2023 when, over the four class sessions, the class worked its way through a fictitious case using a pre-packaged collection of investigation documents and physical evidence items. For this Spring 2024 offering, a new collection of case material will be used with the same process covered in the first course to move on to investigate a second case. No prerequisite is required to enjoy participating in this new case.

Join this fun and mood boosting ZUMBA Gold class for people of all levels and all abilities, especially designed for the older adult. Using music of all genres, you will learn easy to follow rhythms and routines. No experience needed to enjoy this upbeat, calorie burning class. Chairs will be provided for anyone who needs one. This course is designed to open a world of ideas and to offer an opportunity for lively listening and communication.

The format is inspired by Italian and French salons that flourished during the Age of Enlightenment (1685-1815) and remain popular throughout the world today.

Multi-Week Courses 012-INTRODUCTION TO GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH John Skardon, York County Library THURSDAYS, 1 PM, March 7-March 28 4 Weeks: $20; Participants: 35 Explore the methods and sources for learning about your ancestors and your family heritage. In this class, you'll learn about proper research methods and genealogical standards, how to effectively analyze sources and apply evidence and build an accurate family tree. Recommended for beginners to intermediate researchers.

GET TO KNOW JOHN SKARDON Mr. Skardon is a part of the reference staff and the genealogy librarian at the York County Library. He holds a master’s degree in archives and records management from UNC Chapel Hill.

He has been helping researchers and teaching genealogy at the library for almost 10 years. Mr. Skardon is also a genealogy author and has been researching his own family for more than 30 years.

013-INTRODUCTION TO FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY Dr. Brent Woodfill, Winthrop University THURSDAYS, 1 PM, March 7-March 28 4 Weeks: $20; Participants: 20 Learn the basics of forensic anthropology in this course that is a combination of lecture, discussion and handson learning. The course will focus on basic laboratory and field techniques with some activities based on model bones that will allow you to reconstruct traits like age, sex, height and trauma.

020 / 021-BIRDING IN THE FIELD Dr. Bill Rogers THURSDAYS, 9 AM, April 11-May 2 4 Weeks: $32 (Members of ASCG: $25); Participants: 12 This course is for learners of any experience level who want to acquire or improve the ability to identify birds in the wild. We will cover basics of birding techniques and visit a variety of habitats to search for and learn about the local avifauna, as well as perhaps catch up with some migrant species. Binoculars are essential to participate! The National Geographic Field Guide to North American Birds will be quite useful, as well. You are responsible for your own transportation for the first three gatherings.

More details will come about meeting locations prior to each class. The registration fee includes admission to the ASC Greenway and Landsford Canal State Park. Register accordingly based on ASCG membership.

Join this course specifically designed for people new to yoga. The instructor will guide you through very accessible poses and breathing techniques. When you complete this course, you will be ready to join any beginners or intermediate yoga class with confidence!

023-GARDENING IN THE CAROLINA PIEDMONT Dr. Barbara Allbritton-Grant, Master Gardener THURSDAYS, 1 PM, April 11-May 2 4 Weeks: $20; Participants: 30 Now is the time to look, dream and prepare for the upcoming growing season! Join Dr. Albritton-Grant as she guides individuals towards success with gardening in the Carolina clay.

For a variety of reasons, Robert Frost is one of America's most beloved poets. This course will introduce you to his background, influences and contributions to literature in America and around the globe. A variety of poems will be read and discussed. During the final class, the poems will be put into context as the class considers Frost’s various approaches and his significance to us.

This course is intended to be interactive in which everyone learns together.

027-BASIC LANDSCAPE DESIGN I Halle Russell, Master Gardener MONDAY, March 4, 1 PM Fee: $5; Seats: 25 Landscaping is quite the art but knowing where to begin can be challenging. The popularity of this regularly offered workshop proves there are many questions to answer and much knowledge to acquire.

Participants will learn the basics of landscaping to apply at home. This is not a hands-on class but is a prerequisite for registering for Basic Landscape Design II (030 or 032).

028-EXPLORING ROCK HILL WITH MY RIDE Oriana Moore & Katie Quinn, City of Rock Hill Marketing Team TUESDAY, March 5, 9:30 AM-11:30 AM Fee: $5; Participants: 15 Learn everything about My Ride Rock Hill! This free bus service is available to all of Rock Hill's residents and visitors. In this workshop you will learn how to ride on any of our four fixed routes, track the bus and plan trips ahead of time using the My Ride Rock Hill mobile app. Following the lesson, the class will then board a bus and travel along the route. If you are new to using public transit or need a refresher, this beginner-friendly course is perfect for you! *Please note this workshop will last approximately two hours and will meet at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center.

029-CAMELLIA CULTURE AND PROPAGATION Stephen Bott, Member-Charlotte Camellia Society MONDAY, March 11, 1 PM Fee: $5; Participants: 30 This workshop will include general information about growing Camellia plants in the landscape and detailed instructions about several methods of propagation. These methods include air layering, rooting cuttings and grafting. These methods could also be applied to other species of plants.

030 / 032-BASIC LANDSCAPE DESIGN II Halle Russell, Master Gardener THURSDAY, March 14, 9:30 AM; or MONDAY, March 25, 9:30 AM Fee: $5; Seats per date: 8 This workshop is for those who have taken Basic Landscape Design I, either previously or doing so this semester. You will only register for one of the offered dates. Prior to this workshop you will provide pictures of your landscaping situation to receive guidance for addressing specific situations.

One-Session Workshops 031-DECLUTTER TO DOWNSIZE Margaret Johnson MONDAY, March 18, 9:30 AM Fee: $5; Participants: 30 In this workshop, you'll learn effective strategies to initiate the process of decluttering and organizing your living space, preparing you for a move or enabling you to age comfortably in your current home. Engage in conversation focused on handling the belongings we tend to accumulate over time. The class will give you a starting point to begin cleaning out so that your loved ones are not burdened with a mess, and you won't find yourself overwhelmed by excess belongings in your later years.

033-SHADE GARDENS Dr. Barbara Allbritton-Grant, Master Gardener MONDAY, April 29, 1 PM Fee: $5; Participants: 30 A thriving garden does not hinge on abundant sunshine. This class will explore the different types of shade, the advantages of shade gardening and how to overcome its challenges. Examples of plants that do well with less sunshine will be presented, including shrubs, perennials, annuals and wildflowers.

ART CLASSES 034-MAKING FUSED GLASS JEWELRY Bill Belchee & Kim Fulmer TUESDAYS, March 5 & March 12, 9:30 AM 2 Weeks + Materials: $15; Seats: 8 Design and create unique pieces of jewelry which will be fired in a kiln. GET TO KNOW BRET BARONAK Bret Baronak serves as the Director of the Carolina Thread Trail (CTT), a non-profit organization leading the development of trails in the Charlotte region. Bret is a Rock Hill resident and a lifelong lover of the outdoors. Along with being called into ministry 40 years ago came an introduction to folk instruments when informal jam sessions took place in school each week. Quickly realizing his innate talent for learning instruments and possessing a keen ear for lead and harmony singing, Larry embraced music as a powerful tool throughout his tenure as a pastor. Even in retirement, he continues to share the gift of music. Larry previously taught the Beginning Dulcimer course for LL@RH and is offering the Next Level Dulcimer course this spring.

050 / 051-GET CLOSE TO HISTORY Bill Robinson, Anne Springs Close Greenway Cabin Docent THURSDAY, March 21, 1 PM-4 PM Fee: $12 (ASCG Members: $5); Participants: 12 Each year some 297,000 people visit the Anne Springs Close Greenway (ASCG). Most of them are unaware that the history on display is rich, dating back to the 1780’s and beyond. In this tour you will be immersed in the histories of two 18th century cabins, the Nation Ford Road, the tragic demise of the American Chestnut tree and more, drawing on documentation of excellent local historians. Please note this tour may last for 3+ hours. You will be on your feet most of the time. Participants need to be able to walk 2-3 miles. Register accordingly based on ASCG membership. *You are responsible for your own transportation to the ASC Greenway.

Learn more about the site’s history from its settlement in 1766 through the present, with a special focus on the site’s three periods of significance: the Revolutionary Era (1775-1783), the Antebellum Era (1815-1861) and the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877).

Along the way you will be introduced to the diverse Brattonsville community which included enslaved people of African descent, Freedmen, farmers, planters, educators, merchants, skilled laborers and sharecroppers. *Transportation will be provided for those who need it.

055-WINTHROP WALKING TOUR Gary Simrill, Winthrop University MONDAY, April 15, 1 PM Fee: $5; Tour Limit: 15 This popular tour returns! Join alumnus Gary Simrill for a walking tour of the Winthrop campus. The tour will include historical facts and information about the people who made a difference for higher education and the architecture that endures today. Participants will also get an interior view of some of the campus buildings. A small break will be provided during the tour, but you must be able to walk and stay on your feet for at least 2-2.5 hours.

Polk State Historic Site is home to the birthplace of the 11th President and the only Chief-of-State born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. During this guided tour, you will visit the main house, the two cabins and the kitchen house, the historic cemetery, the kitchen garden and the museum. The site aims to bring the life of Polk’s boyhood and Presidency alive in a unique and engaging way. This walking tour will begin on the west side of the historic Friedheim Building (now Wells Fargo).

Throughout the walk guides will give the history and trivia of the landmark buildings. Sites of interest on side streets will be noted as well as now-demolished buildings that were important to the economic development and social life of Rock Hill. The tour will also identify some of Rock Hill's most notable buildings, while also talking about the big changes in downtown Rock Hill over the years and the impact on the lives of the people.

Participants must be able to walk approximately 0.5 miles and remain on their feet for the duration of the tour. *Members of Historic Rock Hill should register for 060H.

Local Tours & Excursions 061-POWELL FARM The Powell Family FRIDAY, May 3, 10 AM (9:15 AM Departure from Northside) Fee: $40; Tour Limit: 20 The Powell Farm experience includes a guided tour of the historic Osborne House, (established 1862-63), the organic garden, old country store, molasses mill, bee apiary, the historic Jehu House (c.1877) and vineyards. The tour will conclude with lunch at the Osborne House. *Transportation will be provided for those who need it. Priority registration will be given to those on the Fall 2023 waitlist for the Powell Farm tour.
