JANUARY 2011

Dear COPM Family,

As our young people go back to school and head off to college, we are excited that this issue of the Lion’s Roar will focus on the most important type of education that you and I can receive – Biblical education. Bishop James and Apostle Betty Peebles placed high value on formal education that, when completed, results in diplomas and degrees. But even more important to them was Christian education. Knowledge that comes from simply opening the Bible and reading the divinely inspired and infallible Word of God will richly bless your life and relationships. The September issue is packed with resources that will challenge you and your family to get you hungry for God’s Word every single day. We know from our own experience that daily study of God’s Word will bless you beyond your wildest imagination. PASTOR & FIRST LADY,

God’s Big Instruction Book

Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. - 2 Timothy 2:15

God’s Big Instruction Book

by Pastor Joel Peebles

I

f you are like most Americans, you have a disdain for instructions and you have started assembling a piece of furniture or toy simply by looking at the image on the box. The question that we inevitably ask, usually a third of our way into the task is, “Why didn’t I just read the instructions in the beginning? Now I’m confused and bewildered and on the verge of destroying it.” Ron Byrne of HCi Journal, an organization that specializes in technical manuals, writes that one of the main reasons people avoid reading manuals is because “deeply entrenched in the human psyche is a little voice that says, ‘You can work it out – and it will be too hard to find what you need to know in the manual anyway.’” We could say a similar phenomenon comes to play when referring to our relationship with the most important instruction manual of all – the Bible, God’s Holy Word. Even though research shows that at least 92% of

all American households have at least one copy of the Bible, only 59% of Americans report that they occasionally read the Bible. Thirty seven percent of Americans say that they read the Bible at least once a week. I find these statistics nothing short of baffling.

youversion.com and biblegateway.com, the excuses for not reading the Bible begin to evaporate before they can be uttered. Anyone with a smart phone can download these free mobile applications that will literally read the Word of God to you.

Your word is a lamp to

In the same way that an IKEA desk will collapse because of a refusal to read and follow the instructions, our lives and the world that we create become lopsided and off course because of our refusal to read the Holy instructional manual. How to address issues of abortion, same-sex marriage, gambling, care for the homeless are clearly addressed in the Holy Word. How to manage and prosper relationships with your siblings, your parents, your children and your spouse are addressed in the Holy Word of God our Father.

my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

As Christians, we believe that the Bible is the divinely inspired infallible Word of God. Why then do we find it such a challenge to make consuming the Word a mandatory part of our day? One common refrain is, “With work and family and church and every other demand placed on my time, I am just too busy to read the Bible. In reality, you and I both know that we are just too busy NOT TO READ the Bible. With free Bible tools like

My prayer for you today is that you grow hungry for God’s Word in a way that is not satisfied until you are immersed in it daily. 3 - Lion’s Roar

Consecration of Pastor Joel R. Peebles

Consecration of Pastor Joel R. Peebles

by Theresa Parco

O

n August 5th, The City of Praise Church Ministries celebrated the consecration of Pastor Joel R. Peebles at the Waterford in Springfield, Va. The ambiance was beautiful, like heaven on earth. The beautiful blue lights brought in the atmosphere of heaven. Waterfalls were at the entrance. White roses on blue pedestals, twelve doves and huge crystal lights were throughout the building and ballroom. The family color was a soft baby blue. This was perfect for a king, a royal priesthood and a holy nation. (1Peter 2:9) Pastor Peebles’ only daughter,

Janay, surprised him with a song, which brought tears to his eyes and to those of the audience. Tears of Joy were in the place. The “Service of Ecclesiastical Elevation” for Pastor Peebles was beautiful. Bishop Ralph Dennis asked questions of Pastor Peebles. This part of the service was reminiscent of the marriage vows given before a man and a woman say, “I do.” (Ephesians 5:27-29 NKJV “… and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.” In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who

loves his wife loves himself. ) First Lady Ylawnda Peebles had the honor of placing the “Pastoral Ring” on Pastor Peebles’ finger. Bishop Dennis said, “The ring is a sign of covenant relationship with God.” He continued, “Receive this ring as a symbol of authority and sonship. Guard the faith, unity and discipline of Christ’s Holy Apostolic Church.” Upon these words, the crowd cheered with the joy of love to finally have Pastor Peebles recognized for all the hard work he has done, and will continue to do.

A

t the City of Praise Church Ministries every activity from youth basketball to the Project Life Givers Ministry is designed to build richer relationships with Christ. However, no activity can take the place of one on one time with the Lord’s Word.

Many of you consume God’s Word every day. It has become the thing that you crave in the morning when you wake up and the only thing that can quiet your heart and give you peace before you go to bed at night. For those who do not have a daily practice of reading God’s Word, The City of Praise Church Ministries wants to encourage you through a new blog series, Praying God’s Holy Word. We know that once you begin reading God’s Word, it will become a regular practice. Once your appetite is wet, it will not be settled until you have quenched your thirst for your daily sustenance of scripture. You can download a weekly Bible reading by logging on to the City of Praise Church Ministries Facebook page or by visiting my blog at http://www.ylawndapeebles.wordpress.com. Each Sunday scripture readings and prayer encouragement will be posted.
