Adult Learn to Skate is aimed at people who are new to skating or people that have been away from the Rink for a while and that want to get comfortable on the ice. Our skilled instructors will tailor the program to the needs of each participant.

Adult Hockey 101 -

Ice Play

This program is for adults and youth and is ideal for a great family hockey experience. Qualified instructors take you through the basics of holding a stick, stickhandling, passing and, of course, playing the game. Basic learn-to-skate ability is a requirement. Full Hockey gear is required to participate in this program

Come for a visit and have some fun on the ice! This is a parent participation course where parent’s and their kids will be able to explore and learn on the rink. There will be stations spread out on the ice for children and parents to partake in together.

You can register for 5 sessions or do a drop-in.

If you can dodge a wrench – or even if you can’t – you can play Powell River dodgeball! This fun, social league will bring you back to your childhood days of playing doctor dodgeball in the elementary school gym, except this time without a teacher! Teams of 6 will face-off against each other once a week in a battle for dodgeball supremacy! Bring some fuel, because you’re guaranteed to be dodging, ducking, dipping, diving and dodging yourself into shape while having a blast doing it. Register as a team or individual to be put on a team.

Aqua yoga adapts traditional hatha poses to the water environment. With the assistance of water, the muscles can work harder while allowing the joints to be supported and may allow students a greater range of motion increasing their flexibility.

The gentle nature of Aqua yoga makes it ideal for all ages & fitness levels. In addition, the support of the water makes it ideal for those who cannot enjoy the benefits of regular yoga due to past injuries.

Some projects take more time to complete. From Sea Otter up to Level 10, skills must be mastered as the building blocks for the next level. These charts show common challenges that bring kids back for more practice before moving to the next level

4 – 12 Orientation to water for babies between the ages of 4-12 months old, assisted by their parent/ months caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. This is a participation-based (with adult) level only, without formal evaluation. This is a great opportunity for parents and babies to learn how to have fun and stay safe in and around the water.

12 - 24 Orientation to water for toddlers aged 12-24 months with their parent/caregiver. Age is the only months condition for entering this level regardless of swimming experience. This is a participation-based (with adult) level only, without formal evaluation; a great way to discover water through play.

2-3 years Orientation to water for toddlers between the ages of 2-3 years old, assisted by their parent/caregiver. (with adult) Age is the only condition for entering this level, regardless of swimming experience. This is a great opportunity for toddlers and caregivers to gain an understanding on how to safely play in and around water environments while having lots of fun.

SEA OTTER

3-6 years

Previous swimming experience is not required to enter Sea Otter; however, previous water play will help the swimmer have a more enjoyable experience. Toddlers must be 3 years old and are ideally toilet trained. Swimming skills are evaluated based on criteria and kids progress to the next level once all Sea Otter skills have been successfully demonstrated, such as general water comfort & submersion with breath control.

SALAMANDER

3-6 years

This level is packed with basic swim skills that are evaluated for completion; it is common for children to be working on this level for multiple sets of lessons to master basic kicking, back glides and roll over floats. If your swimmer was working on Salamander skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 1 Swim Kids.

SUNFISH

3-6 years

To enroll in this level, swimmers must have successfully completed all Salamander skills or be recommended through an assessment. Skills to learn include a 5-metre distance swim and deepwater recovery with front/back/roll-over swims. If your swimmer was working on Sunfish skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 2 Swim Kids.

CROCODILE

3-6 years

Swimmers enter this level after they have successfully mastered all Sunfish skills and are still under 6 years old (or be recommended through an assessment). Skills to learn include 10-metre distance swim and side glides. If your swimmer was working on Crocodile skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 2 Swim Kids.

WHALE

3-6 years

Swimmers enter this level after they have successfully completed Crocodile and are still under 6 years old (or be recommended through an assessment). Skills to learn include a 15-metre distance swim and 10-metre side glides which prove to be challenging in Swim Kids Level 3. If your little swimmer was working on Whale skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 2 Swim Kids.

Red Cross Swim Kids Swimming is like a craft.

It’s not a fail if you need more time to practice the skill - some projects take more time to complete. Register for levels as recommended by an instructor. Free assessments can be arranged if you are not sure what level to register in.

Skills to Master

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 1

This is the entry level for kids aged 6 years and up with little to no swimming experience. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool. It introduces floats and glides, basic kicking and builds to a 5-metre swim with face in. Note, older children with no swimming experience may prefer private lessons until they are able to join group classes within a common age group.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 2

A second orientation level helping children build their skills for front and back swims. Swimmers are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is built on basic flutter kicking, roll over glides and a 10-metre swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 3

This level provides an orientation to deep water, an introduction to front crawl, and a foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving is introduced and children will work on various surface support techniques, side glides and 15-metre swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 4

The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed in this level. Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety. Endurance is developed through a front/side combo drill and a 25-metre swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 5

Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives and receive an introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through the dolphin kick and a 50-metre swim. Front crawl breathing continues to be refined.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 6

Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary backstroke is newly introduced. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive. Endurance is built through a 75-metre swim, and increased distances for all strokes.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 7

Continue building skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke. It also introduces whip kick on your front and kids learn about airway and breathing obstructions. Endurance is built through timed treading water, and a 150-metre swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 8

Introduction to breast stroke, foot first surface dives and rescue entries. Kids learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia and perform rescue breathing on manikins for adult and child rescues. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and a 300-metre swim, and increased distances for all strokes.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 9

Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. In this level children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first shallow dives, standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400-metre swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 10

Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice and head-first and feet-first shallow dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim. This level concludes the Swim Kids program.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course

The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs.

Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop fitness activities, skills and water safety, and swimming skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross Swim @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp, Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens, and Red Cross Swim Adapted programs.

Certification Upon successful completion, candidates are certified for 2 years as a WSI, which allows them to teach Red Cross Swim programs without direct supervision.

Complete 3 Water Safety Instructor—Online Professional Development Courses: Evaluating Strokes, Supervising the Teaching Experience, and Teaching Parented Classes, before attending the WSI Recertification Course.

Recertification Attend a recertification course every 2 years (2 hours classroom, 3 hours pool).

Completion Criteria

Attend, participate in, and complete 100% of all four course components.

WSI—Teaching Experience: complete a minimum of 4 hours** in each of a Red Cross Swim Preschool and a Red Cross Swim Kids class within 6 months of finishing the WSI—Online.

Bronze Medallion Prerequisite: minimum age 13 or hold Bronze Star (proof required) Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Timed continuous swim of 500 metres in under 15 minutes. Must attend all 9 sessions and demonstrate all requirements for certification. Includes CPR-A certification.

MEET OUR CERTIFIED TRAINERS Bianca Hoppe

Bianca Hoppe has a professional background in the medical field and is a certified BCRPA Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Third Age, Weight Training, Spin and Pilates instructor. She is also a certified Personal Trainer on land and in water. Bianca is fascinated by the human body and all its capabilities and the science that always discovers new and improved workouts to either get people in better shape, helps them to recover from injuries or improve their everyday mobility.

Gail Westgate

Gail Westgate; certified personal trainer. Gail has studied fitness theory, weight training and personal training for over a decade. Gail has focused on helping people achieve positive health and fitness changes that support their day to day life. She has learned from personal experience how to overcome fears and blocks and develop new skills that promote well being and accomplishment. Gail is especially adept at engaging with clients to realize important life style challenges and integrate new strengths and interests into their day to day life. Her good humour and positive attitude have inspired many people to make long lasting changes and gain confidence in their abilities. Gail is excited to offer personal training courses for the fall season and looks forward to working with her clients.

PERSONAL TRAINING Our certified trainers can provide training one on one or in group sessions. Whether you are new to fitness, need personalized motivation or sport specific training our personal trainers can develop a program individualized to you and your specific goals. The viscosity of water provides an excellent source of resistance when incorporated into an Aquatic Personal Training program. This resistance allows for muscle strengthening without the need of weights. This program is especially useful for those with arthritis, healing fractured bones or who are overweight.

Follow-up Session $55 Clients can use the follow-up to get some input into their existing programs if they have been training for a few years. Follow-up session will not include a full new program but will include a progression of an original program or a substitution of some exercises that are more appropriate.

Follow-up programs are also designed for people who would like a personal trainer to check their form, correct faulty movement patterns or have some input in their usual program to make it better.

You have heard of the drumming classes; you are intrigued; but, something is holding you back from trying it? Then come to this 5 week series where you will learn all the basics to Drums Alive! Feel and experience the pulsating rhythms, dynamic movements and powerful percussion’s of this new and unique high-energy rhythmical workout. Drums Alive combines movement with the power of drumming.

The Hearts in Motion Walking program is designed to encourage people to participate in regular physical activity by walking. Walking is a great way to boost health and energy and it’s easily incorporated into any lifestyle. You can reduce risk factors such as stress, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and body fat by incorporating over thirty minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Walking with a group as your form of social physical activity is a great way to get connected to your community. Walks will occur in various locations around the community. Bravehearts is a partnership program with VCH, Tla’Amin Health Services and the Powell River Parks, Recreation & Culture department. The programs is a community-based education and support group on self-management, exercise, nutrition and healthy lifestyle for individuals who have experienced a cardiac event. Participants are referred directly from our local internist office. Registration fee includes 3 month membership to the Recreation Complex.

Are you 65 and older looking for motivation to become physically active? Join Choose to Move to help introduce the habit of physical activity into your daily life in ways that make sense for you. Choose to Move is free, flexible and provides you with motivation and support to become more active. In Choose to Move, you receive both individual and group support. You will work with a trained activity coach to develop and stick to a physical activity plan made just for you. You choose activities that you know you will enjoy and are able to do! You will also join a group of other Choose to Movers to share successes and challenges. With the help of your activity coach and support group, you will find the motivation and accountability you need to achieve your goals.
