HELLO!

Wow! Where has the year gone?

I am sure like all of us here at Riverside you’re amazed by the way 2022 seems to have flown by, and before we all know it we’ll be rocketing into 2023! Over these past months it’s been so wonderful to see our houses full again, and to be sharing the joy, laughter, tears and drama that only live theatre can deliver, with you, our audiences.

As we head towards summer, we have so many wonderful (and happily ‘La Nina’-proof!) shows on offer as to kick off our 2023 season.

Starting straight out of the gate in early January, we have a high-flying start to the 2023 Sydney Festival with the extraordinary Afrique en Cirque’s daring acrobats, accompanied by skilled musicians performing authentic and original choreography to the pulsating rhythm of the djembes of Guinea. This Australian exclusive is sure to be a major hit of this year’s Festival and is not to be missed. The Festival fun doesn’t stop there and includes the mind-blowing and provocative fun of one man show, Paradise or The Impermanence of Ice Cream and laughs galore with the fabulous Multi-cultural Comedy Gala featuring some of Australia’s hottest and riotously diverse comedy stars!

For the little ones, the crowd-pleasing story of the Gruffalo continues with The Gruffalo’s Child sure to be the family hit of the holiday season followed later in the year by even more family fun from CDP Kids with Are We There Yet and Tall Stories The Snail and the Whale

In early 2023 we are so thrilled to be a key partner to the wonderful celebration of love and inclusion that is Sydney WorldPride. Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta (NTofP) is proudly partnering with Sydney WorldPride to present the Australian premiere of Broadway sensation, Choir Boy. This is joined by a colourfully eclectic trio of works with NTofP’s The Life Cycle of Blanco, the fabulous Queerstories X Worldpride Celebrity Edition, and the pizzazz of dance, burlesque and circus that is Matador.

We happily see many Riverside favourites returning in 2023, including our regular Sydney Comedy Club and fabulous Cinema Seasons and Festivals. March marks the return of the hilarious crew from The Wharf Revue with Looking for Albanese, sure to give some light relief to counter the election furore. 2023 is yet another big year of musicals and world-class theatre at Riverside. Get your sultry 90’s groove on for the return of last year’s hit production of Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical Later in the year join us to see if you can solve the mystery as the international theatrical phenomenon The Mousetrap plays its limited return season exclusively in Parramatta after the sold-out Theatre Royal Sydney season. Fan favourites Packemin Productions are also back with their spectacular production of global crowd-pleaser Les Misérables.

In the second half of 2023, Riverside is also proudly presenting some unique and all new Australian works, including the theatrical staging of Colleen McCullough’s Tim, and the riveting, deeply researched insight into one of the most impactful days in Australia’s history when we present Sydney Theatre Company’s ground-breaking The Visitors. Riverside Members have the exclusive access to these productions until they go on sale to the General Public in the new year.

Whether it’s bringing a taste of Broadway and the West End to Western Sydney, staging the latest original or cutting-edge Australian works, or something lighter for a laugh or some fun with the kids, Riverside’s 2023 program has something for everyone. The team and I can’t wait to welcome you to our house – your local house – to celebrate the joy of live performance throughout the year.

Until then, stay happy and safe, and we will look forward to seeing you in the foyer soon!

RIVER CITY VOICES PRESENTS

SLAM MESSIAH

One iconic masterwork. 60 powerful voices. 3 magnetic soloists. An energised chamber orchestra. And 3 surprising performance poets.

Be part of something new when a choral Christmas tradition meets a beloved Western Sydney artform. This is Handel’s Messiah, iconic since 1742, as you’ve never seen it before.

Walk back with us from the concert hall of today to Messiah’s origins in a complex tapestry of politics, belief and social justice. The text was born from one man’s struggle to keep his faith alive in the face of changing times and governments; the music would become a gift, dedicated time and again through Handel’s lifetime, to children in need. Messiah is a story, spanning centuries and peoples. What messages will our poets find in it, as they respond to the music and meaning? And what message will be in it for you?

Featuring talented local artists including internationally-acclaimed baritone Warwick Fyfe, soprano Sarah Cherlin, and poets J. Marahuyo, Paris Rosemont and Alasdair David Carter, alongside Parramatta’s flagship symphonic choir River City Voices.

Conducted by Sarah Penicka-Smith. In partnership with WestWords.

PRESENTS THE LIFE CYCLE OF BLANCO

DATES AND TIMES:

Thurs 2 Mar at 7pm

Fri 3 Mar at 7pm Sat 4 Mar at 1pm & 6pm

A creative first look supported through Riverside's National Theatre of Parramatta’s True West program.

A tale of invisibility, rage and the uplifting power of survival. Part monologue, part eulogy, and packing more than a punch, Blanco honours his dying creative ambitions with documentarian flair. An Asian character study with weights and floor work, movement and audience interaction, this fusion of verbatim and physical theatre explores the fractured mind of one man.

Blanco has decided to end the ‘short life cycle’ of his acting career due to the culminating effect of hidden and casual racism on his psyche. How do we thrive in life when faced with so many dead ends in our artistic endeavours? Blanco proves that sometimes the truth can be more entertaining, but it’s up to you if you want to laugh.

With cigarette smoke curling through the air, and Jatz cracker crumbs settling on the carpet, Maureen sits before you. You’re her guest, so you’d better sit up and listen.

It’s in this bohemian living room, accompanied by minimal props or costume, that writer and performer Jonny Hawkins transforms into Maureen: a razor tongued doyenne with stories to tell, inspired by Hawkins’ friend and self-described “working class glamour queen”. Co-created with director Nell Ranney, Maureen: Harbinger of Death, is a celebration of the rich lives of older women. Acerbic, hilarious, poignant and moving, it is an uplifting demonstration of the wisdom, vitality, kindness and humour of women too often overlooked or dismissed by society.

ACCESSIBILITY

Riverside is committed to making our programs and venues welcoming and accessible for all people. If you require specific seating, audio or accessible parking please contact our Box Office team on 02 8839 3399 who will be happy to assist. Our Front of House staff can also help you to your seat if required.

LEVEL ACCESS

Level access from the street leads into our foyer. Level access continues into all venues. Space for wheelchairs is available in all venues but requires booking in advance.

BATHROOMS

Accessible bathrooms are available at each end of the foyer.

PARKING

Limited paid parking at Riverside is available for patrons with a current disability parking permit only. Ask the Box Office staff when booking your tickets.

HEARING ASSISTANCE

If you need seats closer to the front to be able to hear please advise the Box Office staff when booking your tickets.

HEARING SYSTEM

Riverside has hearing augmentation systems in all three theatres to assist patrons who are hearing impaired. Choose from a single ear earpiece, a neck loop attached to a hearing aid or use your own ear buds with Riverside’s FM receiver to amplify the sound from the stage. To access this free service, ask the Box Office staff when booking your tickets.

CAPTIONED EVENTS

Patrons with hearing impairment can access some live performances and cinema sessions through captioning. Captioning is available on large screens inside the theatre for live performances and as open captioning for some films.

COMPANION CARD

Riverside accepts the NSW Companion Card, allowing a support person free entry.

VISION IMPAIRED

If you need seats closer to the front to be able to see and enjoy the show, please advise the Box Office staff when booking your tickets.

AUDIO DESCRIBED EVENTS

Patrons with vision impairments can access some live performances and some cinema events through audio description. Audio description is the live verbal commentary at select moments in the performance and is relayed to audience members via a discreet receiver and ear piece. The description communicates key visual information including action sequences, facial expressions, costume and scenery. Sensory pre-show tours are offered alongside Audio Described shows. Advise the Box Office staff when booking your tickets.

AUSLAN INTERPRETATION

A number of performances at Riverside are selected to be interpreted with Australian Sign Language (Auslan). Interpreters are discreetly positioned on side stage and provide an opportunity for people who are Deaf to access and enjoy these theatre productions.

RELAXED PERFORMANCES

These are sensory friendly performances where the perceived ‘rules’ of theatre are modified to allow patrons with Autism and other specific needs to enjoy the performance in a welcoming environment.

Modifications will differ depending on the show, but can include the house lights being dimmed, but not turned all the way down; the understanding that patrons may come and go from the theatre as needed; elements of the show that might include loud noises or sudden bright lights being toned down or removed.
