Startup Tech course added to Paramount High School CTE offerings
Paramount High School has expanded its Career and Technical Education (CTE) course offerings by adding Startup Tech: Introduction to Entrepreneurship and App Development. This is the third course within the Entrepreneurship Pathway for 2019-20.
The new course was developed in accordance with Paramount Unified School District’s Strategic Plan to create college-ready and career-ready graduates by continually expanding CTE offerings.
Dr. Greg Francois, Director of Secondary Education, describes Startup Tech as “a special place where coding meets the entrepreneurial mindset.” The year-long class serves as a blended-learning, tech-entrepreneurship course that requires students to identify ways to improve their world and to build marketable digital solutions using MIT App Inventor. Students create original apps that addresses community needs and then develop original business plans and marketing materials.
At the completion of the school year, selected students will have the opportunity to present their apps at the Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Startup Showcase exposition, where they could win funding and publicity.
CTE Curriculum Specialist Cecile Kim said: “I am thrilled that our Paramount students will have another engaging CTE course. After they complete Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Entrepreneurship 2, I cannot wait to see all the wonderful things they will be able to create in this new course.”

Chromebooks now available to all Paramount USD students in grades 3-12
For the first time, all students in grades 3-12 this fall will receive a Chromebook—a type of laptop computer—that they will use in school and at home. We hope this additional technology will help transform our classrooms and make the 2019-2020 school year the best ever.
Chromebooks are laptops that run Google’s Chrome OS, an extension of the widely used Google Chrome browser. Other extensions and apps can be added to enhance functionality and versatility of the devices, which are manufactured by a variety of well-known computer companies. Introduced in 2011, Chromebooks have been steadily upgraded and improved.
“Chromebooks are the perfect choice for connecting our students with various tools and applications in use in our classrooms and beyond on a daily basis,” said Assistant Superintendent Ryan Smith.
“Ensuring that our students have such devices represents our District’s commitment to equity when it comes to making technology accessible.”
The District’s Chromebook initiative started two years ago, and it has been highly successful. Durrell Jackson, Coordinator of Educational Technology, added: “It has been amazing to see how access to these devices on a one-to-one basis for our students has really changed how our teachers are teaching and supporting students. We have seen students engaging in activities and projects that are highly rigorous, relevant, and collaborative— something that wouldn’t have been possible if the students didn’t have Chromebooks.”
To support this initiative, the Paramount Unified School District provides its teachers with multiple training opportunities throughout the year. Educational Technology Curriculum Specialists Nancy Rivas and JoyGo-Ng work closely with teachers at all our school sites to help them integrate the use of technology into lessons. “We strive to make Chromebooks more than just tools that substitute for pencil and paper,” Rivas said. “We’re helping our teachers use this technology to transform traditional homework assignments, projects, and papers into truly innovative learning experiences.”

Paramount USD provides professional development for K-8 teachers

ver the years, educational research has aimed to answer this question: “What works best in education?” Although there are a number of factors, research confirms that effective professional development focused on effective teaching and learning approaches has a significant impact on improving student achievement.
Paramount USD takes pride in the quality of professional development it provides to our elementary and middle school teachers. This summer, the District offered 13 different professional learning opportunities for general and special education teachers. Over 300 participants attended sessions covering early literacy development, writing, mathematics, history and social science, science, and English learner support—as well as instructional approaches supported by AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a nonprofit organization that helps schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered educational approach that closes opportunity gaps and better prepares all students for college, careers, and life.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SUMMER WORK INCLUDED:
• A Literacy Institute in which early elementary teachers learned support methods for English learners and students with disabilities.
• A Science Institute in which middle school teachers learned about new science textbooks for teaching Integrated Science courses in grades 6 through 8.
By learning effective, evidence-based strategies, K-8 teachers are better prepared to support students in 21st-century classrooms while preparing them for success in college and careers.

Dear Paramount Unified School District Families and Friends,
We have started a new school year and the promise of fresh academic discovery. School doors officially opened on August 21 and with them the excitement of a new opportunity to shape young minds and inspire future leaders.
The educators of our District have prepared for the year in a variety of enriching ways that ensure they will hit the ground running on the first day of instruction. Some of our students and teachers attended the AVID Summer Institute last month in Anaheim, where they learned the latest in AVID methodologies and strategies to successfully implement the program in our schools, while others ventured to Detroit to collaborate with leaders at the Big Picture Big Bang Conference.
I am proud to note that we have also used the summer months to help recent graduates successfully transition to college through the District’s Summer Melt program.
The six-week program assisted Class of 2019 students with the process of filling out financial aid paperwork, touring colleges and any other challenges that stood in the way of their transition to college. I want to thank all of the counselors and staff members who put in the valuable time and effort to aid students.
The 2019-20 year will feature several improvements to campuses and curriculum within the District. Mokler Elementary will boast new classrooms, while Odyssey STEM Academy continues to make improvements, like adding an Environmental Sustainability Complex. As a District, we will be providing every student in grades 3-12 with a personal technology device.
We are poised to have another historic year. Let us carry that momentum through each day as we lead students to new heights during the 2019-20 school year.

Pirates had a busy summer! • ¡Los Piratas tuvieron un verano ocupado!
Paramount High School is excited to welcome our classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 to a brand new school year. This summer has been a busy one for our Pirates as they prepare for their upcoming seasons in football, cross country, girls’ volleyball, girls’ tennis, cheer, and boys’ water polo.
We are also excited to welcome Manuel Orozco-Franco, our new cross country head coach, to the Pirate Athletic Department team. He is already busy preparing his athletes for the new season. Winter sports boy and girl athletes are also getting a jump on their seasons by attending summer camps in soccer and wrestling.
WATER POLO TEAMS COMPETE IN HAWAII
Our boys’ and girls’ water polo teams competed in the Hawaiian International Tournament on Oahu for the third straight year, playing against high schools from New Zealand, California, Illinois, and Hawaii. A highlight for the girls’ team was playing at Punahou School in Honolulu where former President Barack Obama was a student.
After long days of tournament play, our Pirates participated in excellent cultural and historical activities, such as visiting historic Kaniakapupu Ruins, hiking to beautiful Lulumahu Falls, paying their respects to fallen U.S. sailors at Pearl Harbor, eating ice cream while navigating the world’s largest maze at the Dole Pineapple Plantation, and visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center to enjoy fire dancing and many other entertaining and educational activities.
HOMECOMING GAME IS SEPTEMBER 27
Our Homecoming Game will be held on Friday, September 27, against Venice High School. Please join us to cheer on our Pirates, and don’t forget to wear your Pirate gear to show your school spirit! If you need gear, our Associated Student Body (ASB) will be selling spirit items at every home game.

La Preparatoria Paramount se complace en dar la bienvenida a nuestras clases de 2020, 2021, 2022 y 2023 a un nuevo año escolar. Este verano ha sido muy ocupado para nuestros Piratas mientras se preparan para sus próximas temporadas en fútbol, campo travesía, voleibol de las chicas, tenis de las chicas, porristas y polo acuático de los chicos.

Update on free school meals • Actualización sobre comidas escolares gratuitas
Great news for Paramount Unified School District students and their families: We are pleased to inform you that PUSD will continue its participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for schools taking part in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the 2019-20 school year.
PUSD will also be implementing a new option called Provision 2 (P2) for four school sites: Alondra Middle School, Paramount Park Middle School, Paramount High School West and Senior Campus. Both programs will continue to provide free breakfasts and lunches to all students.
What does this mean for you and your students who attend PUSD schools?
Students are eligible to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch at school every day at no charge. Your student’s current lunch/breakfast pin number will continue to work in the 2019-2020 school year whether the student stays at the same school or transfers to another Paramount school.
For schools participating in CEP, the Student Nutrition Services Department encourages all families who have students enrolled in Paramount schools to complete the 2019-2020 School Funding Data Collection Form (LCFF).
For schools participating in P2, the Student Nutrition Services Department encourages all families who have students enrolled in Alondra Middle School, Paramount Park Middle School, Paramount High School West and Senior Campus to complete the 2019-2020 Meal Benefits Application.
A LCFF or Meal Benefits Application must be completed each new school year. Families only need to complete one form per household even if they have children at more than one school. These important documents help ensure that each PUSD school gets the funding it deserves.
There are several options for you to complete either the LCFF or Meal Benefits Application. You can submit it online at School Mint, the District Enrollment Website, during registration. You can also submit the Meal Benefits Application online at http://paramountusd.rocketscanapps.com. Lastly, you can go to your student’s school office or cafeteria and complete either form.
If you have any questions or need assistance in completing either the LCFF or Meal Benefits Applications, contact Student Nutrition Services at 562-602-6031.
