Superintendent Pérez and the Board of Education recognized Paramount Park Middle School
Principal Kevin Longworth and Yolanda Cuevas, School Health Office Technician for their heroic efforts in coming to the aid of a parent of a student who was in need of life saving measures the morning of April 23, 2018 at Paramount Park Middle School. Due to the emergency services they provided, the mother of the student is alive and recovering.

Imagine a sea of teenagers passionately engaged in conversations on the latest current events—this was the scene at the annual Rotary Roundtable Discussions.
This year, we had over 75 students from ninth through twelfth grade participating in the PHS gym. Students were arranged with five per table with each group rotating to another table every 15 minutes.
Joining the District in sponsoring this event were the Paramount Rotary Club and AltAir Fuels who also provide the monetary prizes.

The Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Pérez recognized Paramount High School seniors Karla Navarro, Alexis Armando Torres and Fernanda Corona at a recent Board of Education meeting. Karla and Alexis are two of just 300 students across the U.S. to receive the all-expense-paid Gates Millennium Scholarship, which is a tremendous honor for them, as well as for our District. Paramount High senior Fernanda Corona was a recipient of the Edison STEM scholarship, an accomplishment that will fuel her pursuit of biomedical engineering. Karla, Alexis and Fernanda received Certificates of Recognition from the Board of Education, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard and Assemblymember Anthony Rendon.

Paramount Unified School District Honors Employees of the year
Teachers along with Secretaries, Instructional Assistants, Security and Student Nutrition Workers (Classified Employees) were celebrated on Wednesday, May 16th with fine dining and a program of recognition.
The venue was the Paramount High School West Campus gymnasium and the auditorium. An evening of festivity began with an honorary dinner provided for the honorees and guests. Entertainment was provided by the Paramount High School Funk Band.
The celebration continued after dinner, with a program filled with entertainment by the Paramount High School Choir, a salute by the JROTC Color Guard and a stage recognition for each of the employees honored by the Board of Education, the Superintendent and Associations (Teachers Association of Paramount, California Schools Employees Association and Management Association of Paramount). Each honoree was showered by praises from all in attendance, gifts, flowers, portraits and certificates.
The gala concluded with the final grand announcement of the District-Wide Teacher and Classified Employee of the Year. With a drum-roll, Rene Rodriguez was announced as the District-wide Teacher of the Year, and Freddy Muñoz as the Classified Employee of the Year.
Mr. Rene Rodriguez teaches Science at Paramount Park Middle School and is an outstanding educator who is able to empower students through experiential learning. In his classes, students discover the world of design, exploration and experimentation. With a calm and patient approach, his
students are able to take risks and succeed.
Mr. Freddy Muñoz is the Senior Custodian at Zamboni Middle School, works hard, and does a great job to maintain a clean and safe school. He always goes above and beyond his daily tasks to support teachers and students. Freddy is always ready to assist in any way possible. Students often share great conversations with him to share their appreciation.
Rene and Freddy will hold the title through the 2018-19 school year. Rene Rodriguez will now move on to represent Paramount where he will compete for the position as County Teacher of the Year against nominees from across the Los Angeles County school districts. Those succeeding at this level move to state and then national Teacher of the Year.
In addition to recognizing teachers and classified employees, the District honored Kelly Anderson as Administrator of the Year. Kelly is a leader who is passionate, positive and enthusiastic. Kelly believes that the learners are not only those at their desks, but also the adults in front of the room. Kelly pushes her staff towards new challenges and higher levels of excellence. And out of the positive, nurturing culture she’s developed, her teachers rise to the occasion and her students succeed!
The Paramount USD esteems the hard work and dedication that each member contributes to this organization and memorializes their efforts with celebration and recognition such as this. The District thanks all who make a difference in the lives of the students in the Paramount Community.
El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Paramount rinde Honor a los Empleados Del año
Los maestros junto con las secretarias, asistentes de maestro, trabajadores de seguridad y del departamento de nutrición (empleados clasificados) celebraron el miércoles, 16 de junio con una elegante cena y un programa de reconocimiento.
La sede fue el gimnasio de la Preparatoria de Paramount – West Campus y en el auditorio. Una tarde de fiesta que inició con una cena de honor ofrecida a los honorados y sus invitados. El entretenimiento fue proporcionado por la Banda de la Preparatoria de Paramount.

Paramount High School seniors
Karla Navarro and Armando Alexis Torres are two of just 300 students across the U.S. to receive the all-expense-paid Gates Millennium Scholarship, which is a tremendous honor for them, as well as for our District. Paramount High senior Fernanda Corona was also a recipient of the $40,000 Edison STEM Scholarship, an accomplishment that will fuel her pursuit of biomedical engineering.
As we celebrate the achievements of students, at Paramount Unified School District we are always refining our programs, finding new ways to help our students reach new heights.
I’m proud to announce that our new Odyssey STEM Academy has partnered with AltSchool, an education and technology software system that personalizes learning through teacher-built and student-driven online platforms. This is an exciting development that will help us in our ongoing efforts to prepare students for future success in a growing technological world.
At Zamboni Middle School, students are getting a new full-time dance instructor as part of its expanding performing arts program through its partnership with Turnaround Arts: California, which will provide up to $10,000 in annual financial support, helping to ensure arts education for every Zamboni student.
Parent and community engagement also continues to be a high priority for our District. We have continued to connect and provide families with educational support through our Parent Engagement Academy (PEA). The seven-week course covers technology, higher and education and mental health.
We should all be encouraged by the culture of high achievement that we have collaboratively built in the Paramount community. As we close out the 2017-18 school year, let us continue to inspire our students to reach for and attain their dreams.

The Board of Education members and Superintendent Pérez congratulated Noah Endo and Susana Muñoz during a recent Board of Education meeting for their artistic talent and accomplishment in being winners of the 25th Annual Lucille Roybal-Allard Student Art Competition – 40th Congressional District. This competition is open to all students in grades 9-12 who reside in the 40th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Maywood, Paramount, Vernon, parts of Bellflower, East Los Angeles, Florence-Graham, South Los Angeles, and Walnut Park. There were a total of 139. Of the 139 total entries, there were four entries selected as finalists and two of the finalists were from Paramount High School. This makes it three years in a row that PHS is represented and has two or more as finalist entries in this competition.
Noah Endo a senior was awarded 1st place, Susana Muñoz, a senior was awarded 3rd place.

Noah received a $1,000 scholarship, $200 for art supplies, a trip to Washington, DC for himself and a parent to attend the national exhibit opening and $500 for travel expenses. Noah will also have his entry displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year, while Susana will have her artwork displayed in the Congresswoman’s District Office in Commerce for one year.
Susana received a $500 scholarship and $150 for art supplies.
Congratulations to Mr. Juan Navarro, the art teacher who is also eligible to receive prize money towards art supplies for his classroom as he is the teacher of two student finalists.

Summer Food Service Program
Children 18 years of age and under are encouraged to join Paramount U.S.D. and the City of Paramount Parks and Recreation Department for free breakfast, free lunch and free recreation at all Paramount elementary schools and middle schools (except Jackson) during the long summer break. Paramount U.S.D. and the City of Paramount Parks & Recreation staff will open all elementary and middle school campuses (except Jackson) Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, June 11th through Friday, August 3rd. The day will start with breakfast and board games from 9:00-10:00, Parks and Recreation staff will then take students to play areas where they will have a host of activities to choose from including, sports, arts and crafts and physical fitness from 10:00 to 12:00. Star Program staff and children will return to the dining area for a sizzling BBQ from 12:00 to 12:30 and will then be released after a nutritious day full of healthy activities that enrich their summer day. Children who eat nutritious meals and participate in safe activities during the summer are more creative and productive at school and at home. According to a recently released report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of families struggling to put food on the table has skyrocketed. For these reasons, we are thankful to have this program in available for the children in Paramount.

Representatives from each company also moderated each table. One adult representative monitored the discussion while the other took notes on each student’s participation. Students were rated on how often they spoke during the table discussion, how assertive they were in voicing their opinion, and on how well they expressed themselves.

Digital Wildcats!
The Digital Citizenship Club Pilot at Zamboni Middle School, started in January 2018, aims to empower students with safe and smart knowledge and practices when engaging in the digital world. The club advisor is Zamboni Counselor, Mrs. Tamara Calero-Hill, who recognizes the importance of building awareness of safety practices when accessing the internet and other online digital content. “Our students were eager to join and we were eager to teach them the advantages of technology use, along with the dangers that may be associated with the misuse of social media.” Sue Saikaly, Principal at Zamboni Middle School also shared, “Our students are grateful for the opportunities available through the Digital Citizenship Club Pilot. They have learned how to identify various online dangers and potential threats which is essential in today’s growing digital age.” By 2020, all students in Paramount USD schools will have digital devices issued and it
is important to support programs that will build awareness on digital safety and other digital needs that may arise.
Mrs. Calero-Hill has been working closely with Nancy Rivas, Education Technology Curriculum Specialist for Paramount USD, to design activities for student members that will educate them in safe online behaviors. Mrs. Calero-Hill and Ms. Rivas have used resources available through Common Sense Media, a leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology, in order to create activities that will not only educate student club members, but their school peers as well. Most recently, students have been working on digital safety tip posters for their campus and other schools in Paramount USD. Although the club is still in its early stages, the Zamboni Digital Citizenship Club plans to evolve and to create strong wildcats who will lead the way in digital safety!

El Club Piloto de Ciudadanos Digitales en la escuela Secundaria Zamboni, empezó en enero de 2018, y busca empoderar a estudiantes con prácticas seguras e inteligentes a la hora de involucrarse en el mundo digital.
La Sra. Tamara Calero-Hill es la líder del club y la consejera de la escuela Zamboni quien reconoce la importancia de crear conciencia de prácticas seguras al acceder al internet y otros contenidos digitales en línea. “Nuestros estudiantes estaban ansiosos de unirse y nosotros estábamos ansiosos por enseñarles las ventajas del uso de la tecnología, junto con los peligros que pueden estar asociados con el uso indebido de los medios de comunicación social.” Nos compartió la Director del a Escuela Secundaria de Zamboni Sue Saikaly, “Nuestros estudiantes están agradecidos por las oportunidades disponibles a través del Club Piloto de Ciudadanos Digitales. Han aprendido a identificar varios peligros en línea y amenazas potenciales que son esenciales en la creciente era digital de hoy.” Para el 2020, todos los estudiantes en las escuelas de PUSD tendrán dispositivos digitales y es
muy importante de apoyar a programas que crean conciencia sobre la seguridad digital y otras necesidades digitales que puedan surgir. La Sra. Calero-Hill ha estado trabajando muy de cercas con Nancy Rivas, Especialista del Currículo de Educación en Tecnología para el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Paramount para diseñar actividades para miembros estudiantiles para educarlos en comportamientos seguros en línea. La Sra. Calero-Hill y la Sra. Rivas han utilizado recursos disponibles a través de Common Sense Media, una organización independiente no lucrativa dedicada a ayudar a los niños a prosperar en un mundo del medio y tecnología, con el fin de crear actividades que no solo educaran a los miembros del club, si no a sus compañeros de escuela también. Recientemente, los estudiantes han estado trabajando en seguridad digital póster con consejos para su escuela y en otras escuelas del Distrito de Paramount. ¡Aunque el Club está todavía en sus primeras etapas, el club de Ciudadanos Digitales de Zamboni planea evolucionar y crear fuerte gatos salvajes que abrirán el camino a la seguridad digital!
