Arlene attended Hollydale for elementary and middle school. At PHS she was involved with Corsairs where she served her community by volunteering for the Thanksgiving brunch and reading to elementary student at Writz Elementary. In addition, she also volunteered her time in the summer assisting the Mokler summer food program, as well as, assisted her dance instructor lead classes to younger children. She was on the Paramount High School swim team for four years, where she served as Captain for the last two years.
She was accepted to CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, UCLA and Stanford.
She has decided to attend Stanford in the fall - where as a Cardinal- she will major in Physics. Her passion in sci -

The Board of Education members and Superintendent Pérez congratulated Rebeka Martinez, Noah Endo and Léana Perez (not in attendance) during a recent Board of Education meeting for their artistic talent and accomplishment in being winners of the 24th Annual Lucille Roybal-Allard Student Art Competition – 40th Congressional District. This competition is open to all students in grades 9-12 who reside in the 40th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Maywood, Paramount, Vernon, parts of Bellflower, East Los Angeles, Florence-Graham, South Los Angeles, and Walnut Park. There were a total of 136 entries from 17 schools in the cities represented. Of the 136 total entries, there was four entries selected as finalists and three of the finalists were from Paramount High School. This makes it two years in a row that PHS is represented and has three of the four finalist entries in this competition.
Rebeka Martinez a senior was awarded 1st place, Noah Endo, a junior was awarded 2nd place and Léana Perez was awarded Honorable Mention.
Rebeka received a $1,000 scholarship, $200 for art supplies, a trip to Washington, DC for herself and a parent to attend the national exhibit opening and $500 for travel expenses. Rebeka will also have her entry displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year, while Noah and Leana will have their artwork displayed in the Congresswoman’s District Office in Commerce for one year. Noah received a $750 scholarship and $175 for art supplies while Léana received a $250 scholarship and $125 for art supplies. Congratulations to Mr. Juan Navarro, the art teacher is also eligible to receive prize money towards art supplies for his classroom as he is the teacher of three student finalists.

This years Pete the Pirate is described to be a funny, intelligent, and kind-hearted individual. Gerardo Garcia was chosen to be this year’s Pete the Pirate because of his many accomplishments and abilities that account for a pirate. In his high school career he has obtained many successes that all of his friends and teachers are proud of him for. Gerardo was on the boys football team in his freshman year and has been in drum line for marching band since his sophomore year and ending his senior year as drum captain. He is also the co-founder for the school’s Harry Potter Club for his junior and senior year. Gerardo’s witty and talented personality has made him very known as a jokester on the Comedy Sportz team for his 11th and 12th grade years as well. His well-rounded character fits perfectly into his Theatre Arts career since his sophomore year well until his senior year. His love for Theatre Arts has taken him to attend USC to major in Cinematic Arts. His extracurricular activities include his love for the arts and photography/film and makes Youtube videos for fun. Aside all of his extracurricular activities, Gerardo is known as a friend that cheers you up when your down and will turn your day around. His energetic

Paramount West Celebrates Student Excellence
On Thursday, May 18, 2017, approximately 300 students, parents, and staff members gathered at the Paramount High School West Campus gym to partake in the 19th annual Night of Recognition. The purpose of this event is to recognize some of the highest achieving and hardest working students. The students in attendance were nominated for various awards by their teachers. Nominations are accompanied by a submission of student work that demonstrates the academic achievement level of each student. West Campus departments examine and evaluate the student submissions to make their selections. After much reflection and discussion, the recipient of each award is agreed upon. Each student receives a medallion and certificate which lists their accomplishment.

musical desde que estaba en el décimo grado y al termino el grado doce como capitán de los tambores. Durante el grado once y doce también fue el cofundador del club de Harry Potter. La personalidad ingeniosa y talentosa de Gerardo lo ha hecho muy conocido como bromista en la Comedia del equipo Sportz cuando estaba en el grado once y doce. Su personalidad cabe perfectamente en su carrera de Artes de Teatro desde que estaba en su segundo año de estudios en la preparatoria hasta su último año. Su amor por Arte de Teatro lo ha llevado en asistir USC para especializarse en Artes Cinematográficas. Sus actividades extracurriculares incluyen el amor por él arte y fotografía y por diversión hace videos en YouTube. Aparte de todas sus actividades extracurriculares, Gerardo se conoce como un amigo que te da ánimo si estás triste y le da un giro a tu día. Su personalidad enérgica y carismática lo ha llevado a ser percibido como “la vida de la fiesta”. Este honor es seguramente para este pirata algo que nunca olvidara y apreciara para muchas más aventuras que están por llegar.
This year’s Polly Pirate is an eccentric and deeply involved senior whose effort has brought her up to the selection as Paramount High School’s female representative. Emily Ortiz was a three-year ASB member as well as Class of 2017 president and is known for her outstanding leadership skills. Not only is she a great leader, but she is also a community giver. Emily has been a member of the Interact Club for three years as well as a CSF member, ending her senior year as secretary. Emily has done over 100 community service hours for Paramount High School as well as volunteering in city events. She also part of the Red Cross club and has volunteered in all the blood drives for all three years. Aside from all of her amazing and praiseworthy achievements, Emily is an excellent student and athlete. She has been in cheer for two years now. She is headed to UCLA to major in Business Communication. All of her teachers, mentors, and friends describe Emily as a perfect representation of a Paramount Pirate that has worked hard
throughout her whole high school career to achieve this honor as Polly the Pirate. The best of luck is wished to this pirate and for the adventures that she will embark.

La Preparatoria de Paramount Plantel Oeste Celebra la Excelencia de los Estudiantes
El día jueves,18 de mayo de 2017, aproximadamente 300 estudiantes, padres y miembros del personal se reunieron en el gimnasio de la Preparatoria Paramount del Plantel Oeste para participar en La Noche de Reconocimiento anual 19o. El propósito de este evento es de reconocer a varios de los estudiantes más destacados y trabajadores. Los estudiantes en asistencia fueron nominados por diversos reconocimientos por sus maestros. Las nominaciones son acompañadas por la entrega de trabajo estudiantil que demuestra el nivel del logro académico de cada estudiante. Los departamentos del Plantel Oeste examinan y evalúan las solicitudes de los estudiantes para hacer sus selecciones. Después de mucha reflexión y diálogo, todos están de acuerdo con el recipiente de cada premio. Cada estudiante recibe un medallón y un certificado que indica sus logros.

Early in life Gabriel was faced with adversity. He attended several different elementary and middle schools due to his family financial hardship. Throughout his journey, Gabriel remained focus in school and connected with teachers that challenged him academically. His life experiences developed his resilience and strengthen his devotion to meet his ultimate goals, as well as mentor students who find themselves in similar situation to his.
Superintendent’s Message:
As our Paramount High School graduating seniors walked across the stage to receive their diplomas last month they carried with them the promise of the future. All of the love and hard work our community has invested in our children has enabled them to take the next step to successful lives.
I am thankful to the Paramount community for its support of our students, from active parents to the partners of our District. Thirty-two of our graduating seniors recently received Paramount Education Partnership (PEP) scholarship awards totaling $120,000 from the City of Paramount. PEP works to make higher education accessible for all Paramount students and our children continue to reap the benefits of its work.
We have so many inspiring students on their way to successful colleges and careers. Senior Desiree Renteria is one of them, and last month she was celebrated as the first Paramount High student to earn a Division I softball scholarship as she signed a letter of intent to play at Howard University. Desiree is a shining example of what our students can achieve when they stay committed to their goals.
Our younger students are setting a strong precedent in their own right, and Major Lynn Mokler Elementary enjoyed a powerful Asian and Pacific Islander American heritage celebration on May 24. Through traditional Thai, Hawaiian and Samoan dances along with presentations Mokler championed diversity and

He was able to build on his community service through assisting in the LA Mission, FoodClothes and Toy drives, helping at the Ronold McDonald House Charity, aiding local elementary schools with different fairs and dances. He is founding member of the City of Paramount Youth Commission were he assist in planning and set up city events.
At PHS he was involved with ASB, JROTC, School Site Council, Leo’s Club, Chicano
embraced togetherness.
I am always amazed by how quickly the school year transpires. As I reflect on all that Paramount Unified School District accomplished in 2016-17 the highlights rush through my mind and fill me with an enormous amount of pride. You, too, should be quite proud and I thank you for being a valued member of a community committed to the success of our students.

Club, CSF, FHA, Pirates of the Kingdom. He was accepted to UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and CSU Long Beach. He has decided to attend UCLA in the fall - where as a Bruin- he will major in Psychobiology, where he plans to study, while enrolled in ROTC, and apply to med school and eventually become a family practitioner and serve in the United States Military.

Tenemos muchos estudiantes ejemplares en camino al éxito hacia universidades y carreras. Desiree Rentería del grado doce es una, el mes pasado ella fue homenajeada como la primera estudiante de la Preparatoria Paramount en obtener una beca en la División I de softbol, conforme firmaba una carta de intención para jugar en la Universidad de Howard. Desiree es un ejemplo brillante de lo que nuestros estudiantes pueden alcanzar cuando se mantienen comprometidos con sus metas.
Nuestros estudiantes jóvenes están estableciendo un precedente muy sólido con sus propios méritos, La Primaria Major Lynn Mokler disfrutó el 24 de mayo
de una enérgica celebración de la herencia de los estadounidenses de origen asiático y del Pacífico. Mediante sus danzas tradicionales de Tailandia, Hawái y Samoa, Mokler apoyo la diversidad y adoptando la solidaridad.
Siempre estoy asombrada en lo rápido que pasa el año escolar. Conforme reflexiono sobre todos los logros realizados por el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Paramount durante este año escolar 2016-17, los eventos destacados pasan por mi mente y me llenan de mucho orgullo. Temprano en la vida Gabriel enfrento la adversidad. Él asistió a diferentes primarias y secundarias dado a las dificultades financieras de su familia. A lo largo del camino, Gabriel permaneció enfocado en la escuela y se relacionó con sus maestros que lo retaron académicamente. Sus experiencias de la vida desarrollaron su resistencia y fortalecieron su devoción para cumplir con sus objetivos finales, al igual de ser un mentor para los estudiantes que se encuentran en una situación similar como la de él. Fue capaz de añadir su servicio comunitario al asistir a la Misión de Los Ángeles, en la recolecta de Ropa-Comida y Juguetes. Ayudando a la Casa de Caridad de Ronald McDonald, ayudando a primarias locales con diferentes ferias y bailes. Él es él miembro fundador de la Comisión Juvenil de la Ciudad de Paramount, donde él asiste en planear y establecer eventos en la ciudad. En la preparatoria PHS él estuvo involucrado con ASB, JROTC, Consejo de la Escuela, Club de Leo’s, Club Chicano, CSF, FHA, Piratas del Reino. Él fue aceptado a UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and CSU Long Beach. Él decidió asistir a UCLA en el otoño- como un Bruin- se especializará en Psicología, donde planea estudiar. Mientras se registrará en ROTC, y aplicará para la escuela de medicina y finalmente convertirse en un médico familiar y así servir en la Militar de Estados Unidos.
