If you haven’t been inside a math classroom recently, you might be pleasantly surprised to see how students are making sense of mathematics. Instead of being told how to solve a math problem, students are challenged to work independently and in teams to solve a problem. For example, instead of being told the formula for the area of triangles, students are provided opportunities to discover the formula by making connections to what they already know about the area of rectangles.
After grappling with a math task, students come together to share and discuss the various strategies used. The discussion helps students see how mathematical ideas can be represented differently while noticing how they are connected. The teacher highlights key ideas and encourages students to find patterns, figure out properties, and determine new rules of mathematics.
Research shows that when students develop a math formula, rule, or property for themselves, they truly understand the concept behind the rule. Instead of simply memorizing a rule, they can reproduce the formula when appropriate because they “discovered” it.
This change to inquirybased instruction requires that students understand the
importance of having a growth mindset.
Growth mindset is an underlying belief that all people can get smarter. Recent advances in neuroscience show the brain grows when people take on challenges. Every time a student struggles with a math task, or even gets a wrong answer, the synapses in the brain fire and the brain grows. It is important for students to have a growth mindset and believe that math abilities will be developed through dedication and hard work.
Parents can promote a growth mindset at home by praising effort and persistence. Celebrate the challenges that everyone faces when learning a new skill. Instead of asking “How was your day?”, honor
the struggles of learning with “What did you learn today?”, “What mistake did you make that taught you something?”, or “What did you try hard at today?”. When parents share stories of learning from mistakes or failure, children see that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process.
When students learn in an inquiry-based classroom, they are bound to struggle and make mistakes. Having a growth mindset supports this new way of learning and is important for student success. This powerful combination provides students with the critical thinking skills needed to succeed in the 21st Century.

¡El 2017 se ve muy prometedor para los deportes de Paramount! Vimos muchos logros de un gran número de atletas durante el 2016 y aún hay más metas por lograr en el horizonte. El 6 de diciembre de 2016, la familia de atletas de Paramount celebró los logros de Cianna Andrews, quien obtuvo una beca completa para jugar en la Universidad Estatal de Sacramento. Paramount Athletics
2017 is looking very promising for Paramount Athletics! Many great accomplishments from a number of pirate athletes were seen in 2016 and there are more goals to be pursued on the horizon. On December 6, 2016, the Paramount athletic family celebrated the accomplishments of girls volleyball player, Cianna Andrews, who earned a full athletic scholarship to play at Sacramento State. In 2016, the Paramount football team advanced to the quarterfinals, girls soccer won a playoff game for the first time in over a decade, two track athletes won state championships, a girls wrestler won a CIF individual championship and advanced to the state meet, and a boys wrestler advanced to the state meet. The Pirates showed great pride and proved what can be accomplished with motivation, determined practice and dedication. As the athletes and coaches embark on 2017, the athletic department is looking forward to more athletes and teams to have outstanding performances and successful seasons of competition. Winter sports are in full swing and as the pre-seasons come to a close, teams will enter into tough San Gabriel Valley League match ups. Paramount is looking to have successful seasons in all sports. Boys basketball struggled during pre-season, but with two freshmen and two sophomores on the starting line-up the future looks bright. The boys soccer team is once again the favorite to win league. With a pre-season record of 7-3, the Pirates will contend for the league title. The boys wrestling team is off to a great start. The squad is led by senior, Nicholas Camacho, who is contending for a Division 1 scholarship and is helping the team to prepare for two big league meets against Downey and Warren. Paramount High School will be the site of the San Gabriel Valley League finals to be held on February 11. The meet will start at 10 AM and will feature all of the top wrestlers in the San Gabriel Valley League.
In girls sports, the Paramount girls soccer team is once again strong and very competitive. They had a great pre-season and look forward to competing with Downey and Warren for the league championship. Girls basketball is young and inexperienced, but have shown great improvement during the pre-season. Although the league is tough, the lady pirates look to pull off a couple of upsets. Girls water polo has a young squad and they continue to improve as they prepare for fierce league games. The girls wrestling team is battling for a league championship and have two league victories under their belt. The rest of league will be tough, but with a lot of girls who have experience, the lady pirates look to compete well in the Moore League.
On behalf of the entire Paramount family, we would like to wish the community a Happy New Year. The Pirate Athletic department is looking forward to having an exciting, fun and successful 2017 year. The pirate athletes and teams are well prepared and continue to perform at a high level. We invite the community to come out and watch the Paramount High School teams compete. It is great to be back from Winter Break! Our teachers, staff and students have returned to school refreshed by the holiday season and ready to continue all of the fabulous work we started in the fall. As we settle back into the school year, I want to continue to stress to our parents the importance of making sure our kids are striving for perfect attendance. Every day is an opportunity to instill valuable lessons into our students so let’s make the most of it as we help our kids build for the future.
Our High School Promise team continues to expand opportunities for our high school students as they inspire college and career preparedness. Our team has now visited four campuses outside of our District this school year, observing classroom techniques and meeting with educators to gain new ideas that we can utilize here at Paramount Unified. We’re learning valuable lessons from these visits and also building partnerships throughout the state that will only make our District stronger.
We are continuing to update our facilities and strengthen technology to give our students the best tools possible to succeed. Over the summer, the District
installed new Wi-Fi technology at Paramount high school and we have already started upgrading wireless connectivity there. Our community came together in November and voted to pass Measure I, which will allow us to fund further updates and repairs for all of our schools. Approximately 10 percent of the funds raised will go to upgrade technology capacity at the District’s 17 campuses and help provide more students with digital tools.

Looking Ahead at 2017-18 Mirando hacia el 2017-18
While this year’s young students are in the middle of learning alphabet letters and numbers, we are already looking ahead at the next school year. Registration for Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten (TK), and Kindergarten will begin on March 20, 2017 for the 2017-18 school year.
Children who turn 4 years old on or before September 1, 2017 and meet family income eligibility may register for State Preschool at the ECE Office, 7340 E. Jackson Street in Paramount. To give families a glimpse of what our preschoolers learn on a daily basis, we will be hosting preschool tours for parents and prospective preschool students at the following sites. Space is limited for tours so please register by calling the ECE Office at (562) 602-6900.
