Paramount Promise offers our students a pathway to tuition-free community college

The District’s new Paramount Promise will provide students with a pathway to Compton College and, potentially, UC Irvine while offering tools for support.
A partnership between Paramount Unified School District and Compton College is giving students new opportunities for post-secondary education, including two years of free tuition for full-time students and financial assistance for books and course supplies.
The Paramount Promise, which was approved by the District’s Governing Board of Education on June 10, provides students with a pathway to Compton College and, potentially, to the University of California, Irvine. Students will be offered guaranteed admission to Compton College, up to $400 for supplies and participation in a tablet/laptop program.
Additionally, Paramount seniors will be eligible to participate in support programs such as First Year Experience and Extended Opportunity Program and Services, which assist low-income and educationally disadvantaged students in achieving their goals.
Full-time students at Compton College who meet eligibility requirements of the Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) program will receive guaranteed student support services at UC Irvine as well, including a textbook and Chromebook laptop computer loan program, scholarship for on-campus tutoring, free and discounted printing, academic success plans and more.
“We are extremely grateful to have this partnership with Compton College as a way to better serve our students,” Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez said. “Paramount Unified is committed to ensuring students are college and career ready, and our new partner will help us fulfill that commitment.”

Dear Paramount Unified School District Families and Friends,
The summer season has given us the opportunity to reflect on our achievements while working to strengthen our programs and services to ensure we are prepared to inspire students to even greater success.
Last month, nearly 1,000 seniors turned their tassels and received diplomas to celebrate their completion of high school. Several of our graduates offer stories of empowerment that will pave the way for young learners following them. Valedictorian Jasmine Gomez, for instance, is a firstgeneration college student who has worked her way into UCLA’s exclusive engineering program. Jasmine, along with so many of our students, embodies the community spirit of Paramount that helps us lift each other to new heights.
In our commitment to helping all of our students reach their college dreams, I’m proud to announce a partnership with Compton College that will give students new opportunities for post-secondary education. Called the Paramount Promise, this program provides students with a pathway to Compton College and, potentially, UC Irvine. It includes two years of free tuition for full-time students and financial assistance for books and course supplies. We know this will unlock so many doors for young people and help them seize a bright future (see the story on page E1).
I would also like to acknowledge Lincoln and Wesley Gaines elementary schools, which have been recognized as Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) California Honor Roll schools. Lincoln and Wesley Gaines have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations. Congratulations to all the parents, students and staff who made this success possible.
Let’s continue building momentum that will carry us to another special year.

t a recent Governing Board of Education meeting, board members and Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez recognized our 2018-19 school year student board representatives.
This year’s representatives were Yanet Lopez, Paramount High School; Ava Guevara, Paramount High School-West; Sakura Ponce, Odyssey STEM Academy; Samantha Avendano, Buena Vista High School; and Jazmin Hernandez, Paramount Adult School.
From September through May, each student board representative provides a report at Board of Education meetings on school activities and events that have taken place or are upcoming.
Since Governing Board members and Superintendent Pérez know how extremely busy our students are with their school and personal schedules, they appreciate very much that student board representatives have taken on this extra duty to help support their schools.

The 2019-2020 school year is here, and the Paramount High School athletic department is hard at work preparing for what we hope will be another outstanding year for the Pirates. During the summer months, all our athletic teams are busy preparing for our upcoming seasons.
Football, boys’ and girls’ cross-country, girls’ volleyball, boys’ water polo and girls’ tennis all started their seasons this month, so those athletes are holding daily workouts. Winter and spring sports also have regular summer practice programs underway.
Boys’ water polo is coming off the best year in school history in which the team reached the semifinals of the Division 7 playoffs. Girls’ volleyball hopes to repeat another playoff run, which would be their fifth year in a row to make it to the playoffs. The girls’ tennis team has shown improvement and looks forward to a playoff run. Our boys’ and girls’ cross-country team will have a new head coach for the first time in 20 years.
Joe Peterson, a legendary football coach who built one of the best programs in the southern section, has retired. One of the most respected coaches in all of CIF, he did a fantastic job here at Paramount.
Our new head football coach is Manuel Orozco-Franco. Our football team has returned with a number of starters and some good young talent just waiting to break out.

Great news for Paramount Unified School District students and their families: We are pleased to inform you that PUSD will continue its participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for schools taking part in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the 2019-20 school year.
PUSD will also be implementing a new option called Provision 2 (P2) for four school sites: Alondra Middle School, Paramount Park Middle School, Paramount High School West and Senior Campus. Both programs will continue to provide free breakfasts and lunches to all students.
What does this mean for you and your students who attend PUSD schools?
Students are eligible to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch at school every day at no charge. Your student’s current lunch/breakfast pin number will continue to work in the 2019-2020 school year whether the student stays at the same school or transfers to another Paramount school.
For schools participating in CEP, the Student Nutrition Services Department encourages all families who have students enrolled in Paramount schools to complete the 2019-2020 School Funding Data Collection Form (LCFF).
For schools participating in P2, the Student Nutrition Services Department encourages all families who have students enrolled in Alondra Middle School, Paramount Park Middle School, Paramount High School West and Senior Campus to complete the 2019-2020 Meal Benefits Application.
A LCFF or Meal Benefits Application must be completed each new school year. Families only need to complete one form per household even if they have children at more than one school. These important documents help ensure that each PUSD school gets the funding it deserves.
There are several options for you to complete either the LCFF or Meal Benefits Application. You can submit it online at School Mint, the District Enrollment Website, during registration. You can also submit the Meal Benefits Application online at http://paramountusd.rocketscanapps.com. Lastly, you can go to your student’s school office or cafeteria and complete either form.
If you have any questions or need assistance in completing either the LCFF or Meal Benefits Applications, contact Student Nutrition Services at 562-602-6031.
