From the

Mayor’s Desk Desk

Calling all veterans! The City of Paramount will recognize our Paramount military personnel next month with a special Veterans Celebration. It will be on Saturday, November 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Paramount Park Gym. If you are a current resident who is a veteran or know someone who is, please call (562) 220-2121.

Mayor Brenda Olmos

Be sure to thank all our veterans for their invaluable service to our nation and our community.

City & School District partnership celebrated

Join Relay for Life Relay for Life is dedicated to helping communities attack cancer. Through funds donated, time given, or awareness raised, communities are teaming up – virtually or in person – to make a difference. When we rally together in the fight against cancer, we can accomplish anything. A tri-cities team of Paramount, Bellflower, and Norwalk will participate on October 23 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Norwalk City Hall Lawn, 12700 Norwalk Blvd. To join or to donate, google “Relay for Life Paramount, Bellflower, Norwalk 2021” to find the website or go to a story on the City’s homepage at paramountcity.com.

Eco-friendly companies in Paramount The Industrial Waste Section of the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County presents “Good Corporate Citizen” certificates each year to businesses that are in full compliance with industrial wastewater discharge requirements. While nearly 1,000 companies in the County are eligible as “significant” industrial users of the wastewater management system, only 449 earned this award in 2020 by meeting the very strict standards. Six of them are from Paramount. All have shown a sense of social responsibility and protection of the environment by properly discharging their industrial wastewater, which keeps it off our beaches and out of the ocean. They deserve a big “green” thank you. The Paramount companies are: Ace Clearwater Enterprises, Braun Linen Service, Inc., Carlton Forge Works, Marukan Vinegar (USA), Inc., and Paramount Dairy, Inc. The City was also recognized.

West Nile virus detected in Paramount

Fight the bite!

Follow GLACVCD on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) has confirmed the first mosquito sample to test positive for West Nile virus (WNV) in Paramount this year. For updated numbers about WNV, please visit glacvcd.org/west-nile-virus-activity-2021. WNV is transmitted to people and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito and has no cure. One in five persons infected with the virus will exhibit symptoms, which can include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, or a skin rash. There is no human vaccine for WNV, and severe cases can lead to paralysis or even death. Mosquito control is a shared responsibility, and Paramount residents must take an active role in reducing the threat of WNV in their neighborhoods by taking the following steps: • Eliminate standing water in clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering troughs or anything that holds water for more than a week. • Ensure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained. • Change the water in pet dishes, bird baths and other small containers weekly. Don’t give mosquitoes a place to breed! • Request mosquitofish from your local vector control district for placement in ornamental ponds. • Wear insect repellent when outdoors where mosquitoes may be present. • Report neglected (green) swimming pools in your neighborhood to your vector control district.

T

he California Contract Cities Association (CCCA) represents and advocates for 73 cities across the State like Paramount that have contracted services such as law enforcement and fire. Last year the organization began the tradition of honoring one City with the John Todd Award for projects or programs that exemplify the model of creating successful partnerships. I’m happy to report that this year’s award went to Paramount for our longtime, productive collaboration with the Paramount Unified School District. Oftentimes, school districts and their local cities tend to be at odds, rarely getting along despite serving the same residents. Back in the 1990s, the City and Paramount Unified were dealing with some serious economic and societal matters. Rather than ignore each other or clash over turf, the two joined as partners to confront these issues, and we’ve worked closely together ever since. Here are just a few of the achievements with PUSD over the years: • Forming an ad hoc committee of two City Councilmembers, two School Board members, the City Manager, and the Superintendent to stay in regular contact and provide updates. • An agreement for the shared use of athletic facilities and City parks. With the latter, allowing PE and recess at Paramount and Progress parks saved the District over $10 million when building Paramount Park Middle School and Jefferson Elementary. • City programs like Gang Resistance is Paramount (GRIP) and Success Through Academics and Recreation (STAR) have been taught and operated by City staff on District campuses. • The Paramount Education Partnership (PEP) has held classes for thousands of children and adults and given out over $1 million in college scholarships to Paramount students. • The Contract Cities Association stated that Paramount received the honor for the City’s “perpetual dedication to collaborative efforts which improve the lives of all residents. The City of Paramount is a shining example of what possibilities collaboration can bring to our communities.” This enduring relationship allows for creative solutions and quick action on issues as they arise. We have possibly the closest working relationship of its kind in California, and it has made a tremendous difference for residents. We’re pleased that the CCCA has chosen to acknowledge it.

ate last year, the Paramount City Council approved tough new penalties to combat the regional increase in dangerous street racing, reckless driving and intersection takeovers. Due to the City’s close access to many freeways, Paramount has seen its share of these illegal incidents. Street racers and the spectators urging them on who are apprehended in Paramount face severe consequences such as large fines, felony vandalism charges, and vehicle impound costs, all of which can reach thousands of dollars. They can even lose their cars for good. At the September 7 City Council meeting, Sheriff ’s Lieutenant Omar Camacho announced that this has produced the following results since the beginning of this year: • Deputies have impounded 34 vehicles in Paramount for exhibition of speed and/or reckless driving. Each vehicle was held for 30 days, resulting in approximately $1,400 in storage fees per case. • Six felony vandalism cases were filed with the courts. • Five misdemeanors for exhibition of speed or street racing were filed with the courts; one defendant paid $3,152 in damages and spent 80 hours in community service. Severe U.S. blood shortage! Donations needed now! Hospitals are now responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits. In addition, there is great hospital demand for blood as patients who previously deferred care during the COVID-19 pandemic present with more advanced disease progression, therefore requiring increased blood transfusions. Because of blood shortages throughout the nation, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes, delaying crucial patient care. These patients really need the help of the American people—so please schedule an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling toll-free 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross will be very grateful for your help. All blood types are needed!

Paramount Chamber of Commerce invites you to

Dancing under Paramount’s iconic Hay Tree

F

estooned with lights, Paramount’s famous Hay Tree was the backdrop for a lovely evening of dancing and dining on August 27 in “A Night Under the Hay Tree,” a special, multifaceted celebration of West African culture. Suitably seated on hay bales, the audience was entertained by a stilt-walker (below, right) and an energetic solo dance performance by Marcus Bradford (left). Next the Dembrebrah Drum and Dance Ensemble took the floor and offered not only lively drumming and dancing, but also traditional West African storytelling (right). Attendees also enjoyed West African cuisine prepared by The Peppered Goat African Restaurant. The festive event was an ideal way to end the summer and welcome autumn. about the performers “Dembrebrah,” which means “unity of the drum,” refers to the djembe, a sacred drum of the Bambara people in the Mali Empire of West Africa. The relationship among the various elements of the drum ensemble signifies “the great creative force that orders the universe through vibration, rhythm and harmony.” Dembrebrah Drum and Dance Ensemble is a group of professional and semi-professional artists and educators dedicated to studying, preserving and promoting authentic, traditional West African art, culture and history. The unique emsemble, which includes musicians, storytellers, poets, dancers, singers and crafts artisans, has been performing in its current form since 1996. Dembrebrah has performed at schools, colleges, universities, entertainment centers, fundraisers, conferences, festivals, graduations, community and corporate events and family occasions, as well as in parades and on television and radio.

BUSINESS CORNER

How to prioritize ‘buckets’ in your business

By Brad Pollak, Director of the Long Beach Small Business Development Center (please see the author biography below)

I

f you own or manage a small business, I am fully aware that you have too much to do and never enough time to do it. To avoid feeling overwhelmed and pulled in a million different directions, it is important that you prioritize your time based on recognizing which areas are most critical to the successful operation of your business. You can think of these areas as “buckets,” and if you force yourself to empty and re-fill each bucket consistently, you’ll feel much more in control as you super-serve your customers.

#1

The first bucket contains “all things financial.” Are you good at managing your cash flow? Do you keep close tabs on your income statements and balance sheets? Do you know if you are actually profitable, even in the midst of growing sales?

You are a business owner and a star. Do yourself the greatest favor of all and allow yourself to prioritize and seek help where you need it. Brad Pollak is the Director of the Long Beach Small Business Development Center. He specializes in business start-ups, leadership, management, marketing strategies, and business planning. He holds a BA from Cornell University and lives in Long Beach. You can reach Brad at (562) 938-5100 or, even better, at bpollak@lbcc.edu. For more information about the SBDC, please go to longbeachsbdc.org. (See the related ad on page 9.)

Together, we can knock out the dangerous Delta variant!

#2

The second bucket is all about your people. Do you have successful processes in place to find, hire and retain the right kind of talent that you need, and do you excel at providing a desirable, nurturing and growth-focused work environment for such talent?

If you have employees, they should know the “Vision” and “Mission” of your company so they feel a part of the team. The Vision represents the principles and bedrock of your organization. It represents your beliefs and expectations. Why are you in business? What problem(s) are you solving as a result of having this business? And your Mission specifically identifies your products and services and the types of customers you serve.

#3

The third bucket is all about retaining your existing customers and consistently attracting new ones to cross your threshold. You can call it a “marketing bucket” that requires you to be aware of strategies and tactics to put in place in order to create demand and grow your business.

You might not think of yourself as a marketer, but you are. It’s the nature of being in business. And what is marketing? It’s storytelling. How good are you and your team at telling the story of your company, your services, and your products? As a marketer, you need to come up with a strategy that identifies what you are trying to say: Who are you and what are you selling? You must also come up with tactics to determine how best to deliver your messaging.

Even if you are a retired CFO with 30 years of experience in finance, you should still have a bookkeeper and a CPA to help you keep on top of your financials. And while you might think this will cost you a lot of money, that’s not true. There are very affordable, qualified bookkeepers and CPA’s—and I would argue no price is too high to pay to make sure your financials are in order.

Obviously, there are plenty of other buckets, be they e-Commerce, or embracing new pointof-sale platforms and other technologies, or considering expanding to international markets, and much, much more. But at the core of your day-to-day operations, you must be laser-focused on your cash flow, on your people, and on your ability to retain and attract your customers.

Asking for help As a business owner, you might feel pressure when faced with understanding the content of each bucket. What if you aren’t a “numbers person” and you gravitate more towards being able to manage people? Or, conversely, what if you are good with financials but are uncomfortable managing your team? If this is the case, it means you are 100% normal. It is rare to find someone who can single-handedly handle all of the buckets herself, without asking for help. This means you need to be completely honest about where you need assistance, and you should run your business accordingly. In addition to possibly needing to hire professional bookkeepers, CPA’s, HR consultants, and marketers, there are many no-cost services to help you glean information and guidance. Such services include Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), SCORE, California Women’s Business Centers, the Small Business Administration (SBA), and more.
