Paramount Education Partnership

O

nce you’re fully vaccinated against COVID-19, there are some things that you can safely start to do again that you had stopped because of the pandemic. • You can visit indoors with other fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask or physically distancing. • You can visit indoors with unvaccinated people from one other household without masks or distancing, unless any of those people or their household members has an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. • You can travel provided you take precautions described in the LA County travel advisory.

Even if you’re fully vaccinated, you should continue to: • Take steps to protect yourself and others by wearing a well-fitting mask over your mouth and nose, washing your hands often, staying at least 6 feet apart from others, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces (outdoors and well-ventilated spaces are safer). • These precautions should be taken whenever you are: • In public. • Gathering with unvaccinated people from more than one other household. • Visiting with an unvaccinated person who is at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease or who lives with such a person. • Avoid medium- and large-sized in-person gatherings. • Follow your workplace guidance.

If you are a close contact to someone with COVID-19: • If you are a close contact to someone with COVID-19, you are not required to quarantine or get tested as long as you are fully vaccinated and you do not have symptoms. • Even if you do not need to quarantine, it is important that you: • Monitor your health for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days from your last contact with the infected person. • Talk to Public Health if you get a call or message from “LA Public Health” or 1-833-641-0305. • Continue to protect yourself and others.

Congratulations to all our PEP scholarship recipients.

Watch out for tax scams! Scammers are especially active at tax time. . .

W

ith the tax season this year extended to mid-May because of the pandemic, beware of tax scams and fake communications claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Always remember that the first contact from the IRS generally comes through a mailed letter. It doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. Also, the IRS: • Does not call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Usually the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes. • Does not threaten to bring in local police or other lawenforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying. • Does not demand payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. • Does not ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. For a full look at different scams, visit irs.gov/uac/tax-scamsconsumer-alerts.

Tips to prevent identity theft: The fight against identity theft is an ongoing battle.

Public Safety

and identity thieves are busy all the time! • Contact credit reporting agencies to request a freeze of your credit reports. • Collect mail promptly. Place a hold on your mail when you are away from home for several days. • Pay attention to your billing cycles. If bills or financial statements are late, contact the sender. • Enable the security features on mobile devices, especially if you have contacts, banking websites and applications saved. • Update sharing and firewall settings when you’re on a public wi-fi network. Consider using a virtual private network, which can give you the privacy of a secured private network. • Review your credit card and bank account statements. Promptly compare receipts with account statements. Watch for unauthorized transactions. • Store personal information in a safe place at home and at work. • Install firewalls and virus-detection software on your home computer. • Create complex passwords that identity thieves cannot guess easily. Change your passwords if a company that you do business with has a breach of its databases • Review your credit report once a year to be certain that it doesn’t include accounts that you have not opened. You can order it for free from Annualcreditreport.com. • Never leave Social Security cards, passports, birth certificates, vehicle pink slips, income tax records, checkbooks and payroll stubs in your unattended car, even in the glove compartment. Thieves breaking into vehicles are often looking for these types of documents. Keep them at home in a safe place.

Take these steps to protect yourself and your personal information that thieves seek through a variety of scams and ploys: • Shred receipts, credit offers, account statements and expired credit cards to prevent “dumpster divers” from getting your personal information.

Rawpixel image

• Secure your Social Security number (SSN). Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet or write your number on your checks. Only give out your SSN when absolutely necessary. • Don’t respond to unsolicited requests for personal information (your name, birthdate, Social Security number or bank account number) by phone, mail or online.

T

he City of Paramount, in partnership with the Paramount Chamber of Commerce, is excited to announce the launch of Explore Paramount, a program designed to incentivize and encourage patrons to experience all aspects of what Paramount has to offer. Explore Paramount promotes local dining options, shopping opportunities and unique experiences in town through a “Receipts-for-Rewards” program, an online gift card portal and the Paramount Al Fresco program for safe outdoor dining. The concept behind Explore Paramount is to draw visitors to Paramount beyond a traditional “shop local” campaign. “We encourage both local residents and visitors to Explore Paramount,” said Peggy Lemons, who recently ended her term as Mayor of Paramount and who helped to create the new program. “Our local restaurants and businesses are one of a kind, and there is so much here in Paramount for shoppers to discover and enjoy—whether inperson or online.” Explore Paramount is built on a three-pronged approach: a Receipts-for-Rewards program that rewards patrons who shop and dine in Paramount; an e-gift card platform that showcases all types of local businesses, not just restaurants or traditional retail; and the Paramount Al Fresco network of safe outdoor dining options. “Both the Receipts-for-Rewards program and the online gift card platform are completely free for businesses and customers, thanks to the support from the City of Paramount,” said Barbara Crowson, Executive Director of the Paramount Chamber of Commerce. “This is a terrific opportunity for our business community to get involved.” Please visit the mobile-friendly ExploreParamount.com for more information and details about how to sign up for rewards.

L

Paramount USD Student Nutrition Services Department announces:

Grocery Kits will also be passed out as part of the PUSD Meals To You Bus Program from 3:30 pm-4:15 pm at four bus stop locations: 7101 Rosecrans Ave., South & Ackerfield, Downey and Andy, and Paramount Blvd. & 54th.

Types of business insurance for small businesses

here is no one-size-fits-all approach to insurance for small businesses, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some basic insurance coverage most small business owners should consider as they look at what they might need. Interestingly, a study conducted by IBM reported that more than 54% of people still want to continue working remotely after the pandemic is resolved, which means that companies must learn how to maintain company culture while their employees are scattered across various locations.

Five most common types of business insurance Although some businesses require more insurance coverage than others, the most common types of business insurance include: 1. General liability insurance—General liability insurance, sometimes referred to as business liability insurance, is designed to help protect your business from claims of bodily injury or property damage. Such claims could arise from accidents that happen during the course of normal business operations. 2. Commercial Auto Insurance—If your small business uses automobiles, trucks or vans in the course of day-to-day business, commercial auto insurance provides businesses the same protection, regardless of whether you or an employee is behind the wheel.

Adequate business insurance is necessary to protect your employees, property, assets and income.

3. Workers compensation insurance—Workers compensation insurance, often referred to as “workers comp,” is a policy that covers employees who are injured or become ill on the job. Although medical benefits mandated by each state can vary, workers comp is a requirement in most states for businesses that have employees. 4. Professional liability insurance—Professional liability insurance, sometimes called errors and omissions insurance (E&O) or professional indemnity insurance, is important coverage for professionals like accountants, consultants, service providers and others to protect their businesses from mistakes that cause a client financial loss. 5. Product liability insurance—Product liability insurance covers financial liability due to physical harm caused by product failure. For example, if your product hurts someone or damages their property, the liability coverage will help you pay for attorneys, a judgment or a settlement. This is not an all-inclusive list, but it’s a good place to start.

What is a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP)? To reduce the cost of insurance to most small business owners, insurance companies offer bundled policies called BOP Insurance or Business Owner’s Policies. BOP insurance combines property and general liability coverage into one policy to help cover claims resulting from situations like fire, theft and other liability claims that could arise from your business’ daily operations. You can also speak to your insurance agent about adding other coverage to your BOP policy to address other needs, because it can be custom-made to fit your industry and your business. This can be a good strategy to reduce your overall insurance costs while ensuring your business has the coverage it needs.

How much does business insurance cost for small businesses? Because no two small businesses are the same, insurance costs will vary depending on the nature of your business, where your business is located and the industry you’re in. Here are common considerations an insurance company will take into account when they quote the cost of insurance: • Type of insurance—Commercial auto insurance will not have the same cost as professional liability, for example. • Industry—When an insurance company looks at your business, they are evaluating potential risks within your industry. For example, an industrial or construction business might have more inherent risks of accidents than a professional office. • Risk—Other factors besides your industry that could influence your risk profile. For example, if you are purchasing commercial auto insurance, your driving record (and your employees’ driving records) will directly impact your premium costs. • Location—Where your business is located also makes a difference. If your business is located in a high-crime area, you should expect your insurance premium to be higher. Or, if your business is located in an area that regularly floods, you should also expect higher premiums. • Number of employees—The more employees you have, the more annual expense you’ll have for workers comp or professional liability coverage. • Business income—Insurance companies assume that the more income your business makes, the more there is to insure. • Your deductible—In the same way that a higher deductible lowers your auto or homeowner’s insurance premium, the same is true with your business insurance.

Circumstances that will influence insurance costs • The nature of your business—What you do or what you sell makes a big difference and could impact the cost of your insurance. For example, professional

liability insurance for a heart surgeon (e.g, malpractice insurance) is probably more expensive than professional liability insurance for an insurance agent. As a retailer, if you sell something that is easy to steal with a high dollar value like diamond engagement rings, your policy will likely be more expensive than another small business that sells more difficult-to-steal items like washing machines and refrigerators. • Your business location—If your business is located in a hurricane zone, a floodplain, or someplace susceptible to wildfire, your insurance premiums will likely be higher. Recent wildfires in California, for example, have likely impacted business insurance premiums lots of businesses. If your business is located in a higher-crime area, it could also increase the cost of your premiums. • Your prior claims history—If you’ve had business insurance before and have filed several claims over the years, you might pay higher premiums. For example, if you have delivery drivers with a history of accidents or speeding tickets, your commercial auto premiums will likely be higher than if your drivers all had spotless driving records. Although lots of variables could impact insurance costs, according to Progressive, here’s what you might expect to pay for common business insurance policies: Workers Compensation: $85/month (average cost); $68/month (median cost) Business Owner’s Policy (BOP): $80/month (average cost); $62/month (median cost) General Liability: $53/month (average cost); $46/month (median cost) Professional Liability: $46/month (average cost); $42/month (median cost) What you will pay will be determined by what’s actually going on in your business, so use the above pricing only as a guide.

How to get business insurance for your business Here are things you need to consider when you’re looking for a policy: 1. Think about your business and the potential risks you might face. Include the risks of lawsuit or other potential liability. 2. Meet with a licensed commercial insurance agent who can help you evaluate those risks and can make suggestions about the types of insurance you may need. 3. Shop around. It’s perfectly reasonable to speak with more than one insurance agent to make sure that you’re getting the coverage you need at the best possible price. 4. Do an insurance audit with your agent every year. As your business grows, your insurance needs will often change. Make sure that your current coverage is appropriate and that the price is right.
