fter all the dismal months of social distancing because pandemic—which of the pandemic included cancellation of our tournament—it 2020 golf tournament was both a relief and a delight to see the 117 golfers who came out on May 17 to support the Paramount Chamber of Commerce at our Annual Golf Classic, held this year at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park. This tournament is the Chamber’s biggest fundraiser each year, and we’re very grateful for the participation of all those who enjoyed playing golf, eating excellent food, winning prizes and, perhaps best of all, sharing some muchmissed camaraderie. We especially thank Carlton Forge Works, our returning major sponsor, and our other generous sponsors shown on page 4, as well as our invaluable vendors and volunteers who helped make this event such a success. Funds raised from the Golf Classic will make Chamber of Commerce memberships more affordable to local businesses and will help the Chamber keep providing so many valuable services—including our Business Resource Center, free business counseling at the Chamber Office by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the Pulse Beat, our local Business Directory, access to referrals and numerous networking and educational events each year. A portion of event proceeds will go to Paramount Education Partnership to sponsor scholarships for continuing education for local students. Please see additional information and photos on page 4.

Give input on housing and health in Paramount The State of California requires that all local governments adequately plan to meet the housing needs of everyone in the community by adopting Housing Elements as part of their General Plans. The State also requires that certain cities incorporate environmental justice policies into their General Plans. The Housing Element must be updated in eight-year cycles. Paramount’s update is currently underway. The City is also working on its first Environmental Justice Element to address goals, policies, and objectives to ensure that everyone has a healthy environment in which to live, learn and work. The success of the Housing Element update requires extensive community engagement and input. Please take part in a community survey to give your thoughts. Catalytic converter theft suspects arrested

n response to the wave of catalytic converter thefts throughout the region, investigative work by the Paramount Sheriff ’s Detective Bureau and Special Assignment Officers (SAO) led to the apprehension of a 34-year-old male and 25-year-old female from Long Beach who are accused of stealing a catalytic converter in Paramount. After the arrests, the SAO Team executed a search warrant at the Long Beach residence and recovered several reciprocating saw blades of the type commonly used to cut catalytic converters off vehicles within seconds. A further records check revealed that both suspects are also under investigation by a local law enforcement agency for several such thefts in the South Bay area. Congratulations to our team for this excellent work, which should help curb the ongoing threat of catalytic converter thefts in our town.

Washing your car can pollute the ocean and even result in fines and lawsuits

NO WASTE! Some storm drains have markings like this:

Drains to ocean

Did you know that there are very serious DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to washing your car? Paramount is one of many cities in Los Angeles County and Orange County that have for years been under a court order to protect storm drains from pollutants that can enter and damage rivers and the ocean. This court order stemmed from a lawsuit filed by numerous environmentalist groups. The soapy runoff from washing cars and trucks in driveways can contain chemicals that harm the environment. When they flow into gutters and then into storm drains that reach the ocean and other waterways, the City of Paramount can be liable for large fines from regional enforcement agencies as a result of that lawsuit. The risk is real. Environmental groups constantly monitor storm drain discharges. If we aren’t vigilant and pollutants get through, cities like Paramount can be sued. Paramount residents are encouraged to take their vehicles to professional car wash businesses, which are required to have devices that capture runoff. They also usually recycle their water. Car washes in parking lots or mobile car wash services are not allowed in Paramount and many other cities. For more information, please visit the Public Works Department page at paramountcity.com and look for “Stormwater” on the left side of the page. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

‘Receipts for Rewards’ program now underway

I

n the photo at the right, Barbara Crowson, Executive Director of the Paramount Chamber of Commerce, presents a gift card to Boris Bukvic, the first winner in the new “Receipts for Rewards” program recently launched by the City of Paramount and the Chamber as part of the Explore Paramount initiative that’s designed to incentivize and encourage patrons to experience all aspects of the many unique dining and shopping opportunities that Paramount has to offer. Boris won his gift card by shopping in Paramount and saving his receipts. After he had accumulated receipts totaling $50, he submitted them, and his name was entered in a weekly drawing—which he won!

RECEIPTS for REWARDS

You can submit your receipts online at ExploreParamount.com (which is mobile-friendly), or you can just drop them by the Chamber of Commerce office at 15357 Paramount Blvd. In addition to “Receipts for Rewards,” Explore Paramount offers an e-gift card platform that showcases all types of local businesses (not just restaurants and traditional retail), as well as the “Paramount Al Fresco” program for safe outdoor dining. BUSINESS CORNER

Two business growth strategies for hard times By Richard L. Weinberger (Originally published May 13, 2021, on allbusiness.co; see author profile below))

E

very part of the globe has felt, and is still feeling, the ill effects of the worldwide pandemic. Businesses in practically every segment of the economy have been negatively affected. Sales are down, employees have been laid off, and supply chains continue to be interrupted. What used to be the normal course for most businesses is now far from normal. While some government assistance programs will help some businesses survive, other companies will be forced to close or declare bankruptcy. However, for the businesses that can outlast the economic downturn, their business models will likely change forever. From a positive standpoint, these forced changes can result in a business becoming more efficient and more profitable, leading to a brighter future.

Sometimes you need to adapt to a changing business environment. . .

Small businesses must become more creative in their efforts to thrive during these difficult times—and think about two crucial words that can give their companies a necessary boost: diversification and adaptation. Businesses that were accustomed to doing the same thing over and over again without change (same products, same services, same sales efforts, same pricing, same customer service . . . basically, same everything) will find themselves at the back of the pack rather than leading the pack. While change is imperative and good for business, keeping operations the same can result in business stagnation. In today’s economic environment, businesses cannot afford to remain stagnant. This is the time for small businesses to be entrepreneurial and creative when thinking of business growth strategies. Rather than operating in the same way they have operated in the past, businesses must develop new models that retain parts of the past and capitalize on the future to become different, better, and unique. Diversification is certainly one element that can contribute to business growth. This is a process of expanding or varying the range of products or services a business offers. This might include offering related and valueadded products and services, or even adding a completely different line of products and services. Basically, anything that allows a business to become more diverse will increase the opportunity for future sales and growth—not only with current customers, but with prospective customers. Diversification allows the typical target market to be expanded into new markets with additional products and services offered.

A D A P TAT I O N Adaptation is another key factor that is important to the long-term success of a small business. In today’s rapidly changing world, adaptation in business means adapting to the local and global environment, altering business operations to market forces, and modifying existing products and services to meet the needs of customers and evolving new and different markets. While many employees continue to work remotely and customers adhere to isolation policies, businesses can either adapt to the current situation or even close due to lack of business. Businesses that understand the need for adaptation and learn how to adapt will build stronger foundations for the future. While some changes in the way companies have to conduct business now may be temporary, many of these changes will become permanent. Customers, as well as employees, will find a new comfort zone with many of the adaptations that have been implemented and will not want to return to previous business models. Curbside pickup, home and business delivery, free and priority shipping, Zoom conferencing, live-streamed demonstrations, upgraded technology, telehealth calls, online selling, and more flexible payment options are here to stay.

Even big businesses need smart growth strategies The effects of a weak economy and a changed business world have caused new business models to surface that never would have been considered six months or even a year ago. Although it is certainly not easy to change the normal operations of a business, with some forethought and ingenuity on the part of business owners and managers, those who try may be rewarded. Not all new ideas will be successful, but simply keeping the status quo may not be enough to sustain the profitability of a business that is feeling the sting of an ever-present downturn in business.

While change has always been present in business and more of an option than a necessity, change today is now necessary. From small businesses to large businesses, local businesses to global businesses, change is ever present. Small businesses only have to look at the examples of some very well-known large businesses (J.Crew, Gold’s Gym, Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, Hertz, Brooks Brothers, California Pizza Kitchen, to name a few) either filing for bankruptcy protection or announcing major downsizing in the last year in order to understand that if large, wellknown, well-established businesses can fail, so can a small local business.

Sometimes you need more than one basket—and more than one way of doing things. . .

Diversification and adaptation can certainly be elements contributing to the success of a small business. They may also be the salvation of small businesses that are trying to survive. It is great being better than the competition, but being different and unique certainly creates a competitive advantage that every business seeks. Richard L. Weinberger, PhD, CPA, has over 30 years of experience as a management and financial consultant dealing exclusively with small businesses, and he is CEO of the Association of Accredited Small Business Consultants.
