City working to get COVID-19 vaccinations for residents

L

T

he City of Paramount as been working with many partners to bring COVID-19 vaccinations to the people of Paramount.

We are adding as many names of residents as we can to our waitlist, regardless of their eligibility status or their tier. Then, when vaccination opportunities become available, they will be contacted. To add your name, call 562-220-2121, 562-220-2124 or 562-220-2125. Also keep in mind that the vaccine is being given for free to people who live in Los Angeles County, regardless of immigration status. You will not be asked about your immigration status when you get a vaccine. Your medical information is private and will not be shared with anyone. Beginning April 1, California residents 50 and older will be eligible to be vaccinated, and starting April 15, residents older than 16 will also be eligible. An increasing supply of doses from the federal government is becoming available, and statewide efforts are underway to get more shots into arms. State officials expect that California will receive 2.5 million doses per week in the first half of April (up from 1.8 million at the end of March), and that number is expected to increase to more than three million doses per week by the second half of April. Nearly 16 million vaccine doses have been administered in California to date, many more than in any other state; however, the per-capita vaccination rate is about average compared to the rest of the country. California healthcare providers have now been given the discretion to vaccinate family members of those who are eligible to receive vaccine.

t the Paramount City Council annual reorganization meeting this month, my term as mayor ends. I cannot express how proud I have been to serve in this position and how thankful I am for you putting your trust in me as a member of the City Council. This has been a difficult year, to say the least, and the personal and economic devastation has been profound. I continue to offer my deepest sympathy, most fervent prayers and thoughts of hope to all as the light of day seems to spread over the horizon and a sense of normalcy reawakens. I want to thank our city employees who during this time have shown grace and ingenuity while maintaining as many services, programs and facilities as possible. I want to thank the remarkable folks in our community who, as always, have come together to face our challenges with kindness, humility and perseverance. I’ve always loved Paramount, and my affection and respect have grown that much more during the past year.

“Explore Paramount!” and get rewarded The City, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, has launched a website with all sorts of information about safe dining experiences in town and chances to win rewards for local dining and shopping, along with an easy place to purchase gift cards for our businesses. As things begin to open back up, with higher capacities allowed inside, it’s time to show our business community that we’re so happy to have them back. Visit Exploreparamount.com.

Public Safety Free steering wheel locks are now available for selected vehicle models in Paramount Check the list below to see if your vehicle qualifies for a free anti-theft device from the City of Paramount.

Street racing cars impounded

Illegal street racing is not only a major danger to public safety, it also damages streets and disrupts traffic flow. The City of Paramount is taking aggressive action to stop it.

Vova Krasilnikov from Pexels

Paramount Pulse Beat • paramountchamber.com

In September 2020, the Paramount City Council passed a strict ordinance against street racing that imposed larger fines and higher storage costs for those taking part in illegal racing. Since then, Sheriff ’s deputies have impounded 61 vehicles for engaging in speed contests, exhibitions of speed and reckless driving of all sorts. The Public Safety team imposed severe penalties for the drivers and vehicles, which were cited during routine patrol calls, special traffic enforcement operations and street racing task force operations. In most cases, getting caught for street racing resulted in total fees of $2,580, which were the responsibility of the driver or registered owner of the vehicle.

M

any Paramount residents are eligible to receive an anti-theft device for free. The City is offering steering wheel locks to owners of the following cars: Honda Civic and Accord; Chevrolet Silverado, Avalanche, Tahoe and Express; and GMC Sierra. There has been a regional increase in grand theft auto, and these particular cars have been targeted especially hard locally. Eligible residents will receive one device per vehicle. They can be obtained at the Paramount Sheriff ’s Station, 15001 Paramount Blvd., Monday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. To qualify, you must provide a photo ID, proof of residency (such as a utility bill) and proof of vehicle ownership. First come, first served, while supplies last. The program is paid for by the City’s general fund. Also consider these special precautions to safeguard your cars: When possible, park in a garage. When your car is parked outside and left unattended, make sure the doors are locked. During the hours of darkness, park in areas that are well-lighted.

An important update from County of Los Angeles Public Health:

Traveling and gathering for spiritual holidays or spring break increases your risk of catching and spreading COVID-19

A

s we approach numerous religious and spiritual holidays, as well as spring break, it is important to remember that traveling and gathering in-person with others increases the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19.

While COVID-19 numbers have decreased in Los Angeles County, disease transmission remains widespread and is increasing in many other states and countries where visitors could catch the virus. The safest way to observe religious and spiritual holidays at this time is still to gather virtually or only with people who live with you. Los Angeles County residents should continue to avoid all non-essential travel and stay within 120 miles from their places of residence unless they are traveling for essential purposes. A “Travel Advisory” remains in effect in Los Angeles County ( for details, visit publichealth.lacounty.gov). Anyone who is arriving in L.A. County from outside the state must selfquarantine for 10 days; travelers should remain at their homes or lodgings for the full 10 days and avoid contact with others. People should get tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms, were in crowds, or were involved in any other activities that may have put them at risk for getting COVID-19. “To the many people across our communities who are facing a time of sorrow without their loved ones who passed away from COVID-19, we are keeping you in our hearts and thoughts,” said Barbara Ferrer, Director of Public Health. “We must remain diligent and continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. We are so close, perhaps only several months away from having enough people vaccinated to accelerate our reopening without adverse effects. However, we remain quite concerned with reports of rising cases of COVID and hospitalizations in a growing number of states. We know the virus does not respect borders. If we are able to hold the line here and prevent another wave of increasing infections, we will soon be able to realize the profound benefits of our mass vaccination efforts in reducing spread of the virus and, most importantly, preventing COVID hospitalizations and deaths.” Since L.A. County is in the Red Tier of the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, a private gathering can occur indoors with up to three separate households, with masking and distancing required at all times and limited to two hours. Outdoors is still safer than indoors. People who are fully vaccinated can gather indoors, without required masking and distancing, with either two

other households of people who are fully vaccinated or with one other household of unvaccinated/partially vaccinated people, unless any of those people or anyone they live is at risk for serious illness from COVID-19. People are considered fully vaccinated: • 2 weeks after receiving the second dose in a 2-dose series of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, or • 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine (the Johnson & Johnson vaccine). If it has been less than 2 weeks since your shot or you still need to get your second dose, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Gatherings, even with people you know who have no symptoms and who have tested negative, can still result in spread of the virus to many people. The risk of spread increases when people are not diligent about consistently and correctly wearing face masks or keeping their physical distance and when people gather indoors. L.A. County is working to ensure that eligible residents and workers in hardhit communities have increased access to vaccines. For information about who is eligible for COVID-19 vaccine in L.A. County, how to make an appointment if it is your turn, what verifications you will need to show at your vaccination appointment and much more, visit: VaccinateLACounty.com (English) and VacunateLosAngeles.com (Spanish). Vaccinations are always free and open to eligible residents and workers regardless of immigration status. L.A. County Reopening Protocols, COVID-19 Surveillance Interactive Dashboard, Roadmap to Recovery, Recovery Dashboard, and additional actions you can take to protect yourself, your family and your community are all on the Public Health website: publichealth.lacounty.gov. Editor’s note: This story comes from a County of Los Angeles Public Health news release dated March 27, 2021. As of that date, Paramount had reported 9,781 cases of COVID-19. Let’s keep working together to lower the threat of this devastating and potentially deadly disease (see the related story on page 1).

BUSINESS CORNER

Maintaining company culture while working remotely

By Smith Willas, This article was originally submitted to www.smallbizdaily.com on March 5, 2021; see the author profile below.

I

t’s safe to say that we are living in a very different world than the one we were in just 18 months ago. Because of the pandemic, many businesses worldwide have been forced to rethink their business practices and company cultures as their workspaces and offices have been closed to help prevent the spread of the virus. As a result, remote working has become the “new normal” as companies try to find pragmatic solutions to these unprecedented times. Interestingly, a study conducted by IBM reported that more than 54% of people still want to continue working remotely after the pandemic is resolved, which means that companies must learn how to maintain their company culture while their employees are scattered across various locations. WHAT IS COMPANY CULTURE?

We’re living in a very different world now. . .

According to a Glassdoor survey, a whopping 56% of employees rank having a good workplace culture to be more important than a high salary. This shows just how important it is to develop and maintain a healthy, strong, vibrant company culture even with the newfound distance between colleagues. With that said, here are five quick tips on how to maintain your company culture while working remotely: 1. Observe your current culture—Now is an excellent time to reinforce the culture you want to develop in your company. The thing is: your workplace will develop a culture whether you pay attention to it or not, so rather than leave it to chance, why not put measures in place now while remote working tendencies are still relatively in their infancy? This gives you a chance to break bad habits before they form and cut out any toxic behaviors that are currently present. To do this: • Take a step back and observe your business. • Look at how your colleagues interact with each other and what the overall “feel” of your company is like. • If possible, talk to your managers, senior leadership, and employees and find out how everyone is coping with the new situation, and then see how you can improve it. If you’re happy with the way things are, reinforce these good habits while people are working remotely and praise your employees on this success. If not, you must be very clear in your understanding of what you want to change, why, and how you’re going to do it. 2. Improve communication—30% of hiring managers believed that a reduction in team cohesion was one of the most significant issues with remote work. This is typically brought on by a lack of communication and a feeling of disconnection due to the lack of face-to-face contact and broken communication channels. Fortunately, there are many ways to overcome this issue, and it’s all about opening up new communication channels. These days we are spoiled for choice with communication software, apps, and technology, so much so that looking for a solution can feel quite overwhelming. Fortunately, there are new and improved versions of team email that do a great job at facilitating communication between employees without the need for stiff formalities and long, confusing threads. This is a great way for your employees to share knowledge and collaborate with each other in a safe and easy-to-use platform, and it goes a long way toward breaking down challenges that employees experience with remote working. 3. Host virtual-get-togethers—In a survey, 30% of participants ranked loneliness as one of the greatest challenges they face while working from home. This lack of human contact can negatively impact

It’s essentially a combination of your business values, ethics, goals, and mission. Think of it as an amalgamation of your company’s shared attributes and characteristics. It’s the way your colleagues engage with each other, how management interacts with employees, and the company’s overall atmosphere and philosophy.

mental health and induce feelings of anxiety and depression in some people, which is why business owners need to think of new ways for employees to connect with each other. A great way to combat this is by introducing informal virtual meetings such as coffee breaks and even things such as virtual quizzes. This helps to catch up on all the missed “office talk” and provides an excellent opportunity for colleagues to keep in touch with each other without it being something work-related. 4. Trust your employees—Ask your customers to share their successes. Trust is an essential ingredient for building mutual respect between you and your employees. It’s a must for fostering productivity in the workplace (even if it is at home), as those who are treated with dignity, respect and trust will usually rise to the occasion and pay you back with a high work ethic. Unfortunately, many business owners have enforced strict monitoring practices on their remote working employees to make sure they are doing the work they should be doing instead of “slacking off.” This shows a lack of trust and will begin to break down relationships between employees and management, which is not exactly good for the work culture. To get around this, set clear guidelines for your employees and refrain from micromanaging their tasks while working remotely. By all means, you must set boundaries, and your employees should keep you up-to-date with their progress and activities, but try not to cross the line and come across as someone who is interfering. 5. Pay attention to your employee’s work-life balance—Finally, if you want to foster and maintain a healthy work culture, you must be willing to pay attention to your employees’ work-life balance and see if there is any way you can help improve their circumstances. This could mean something as simple as giving them more flexible working hours to help care for their children or offering more flexible leave so they can get to grips with the new situation we all find ourselves in. A good work culture is one that promotes caring for one another and keeping true to company values. It’s a culture where all of its members look out for one another and have each other’s best interests at heart. While it can be challenging to maintain this ethos during these difficult times, the biggest change must come from the top (with the owners) to set a good example and show their employees what is expected of them.
