Crime Prevention Tips

October is National Crime Prevention Month. As part of the observance, the Paramount Public Safety Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are offering safety tips about certain types of crimes.

THEFTS FROM VEHICLES

• Always set the alarm or anti-theft device in your vehicle.

• Don’t leave valuables inside and never leave them unattended.

• Lock all doors, and secure all windows (don't even leave a tiny space for ventilation).

• If you must leave anything of value, conceal it prior to reaching your destination.

• Never leave important papers in the car; thieves can use them for ID theft.

• Try to park in busy, well-traveled areas.

PROTECTING YOUR HOME

Whether you leave your home for five minutes or five weeks, it's vulnerable when unoccupied.

• Always lock your doors and windows even when leaving for “just a minute.”

• Never leave a house key available … under a doormat, in a flower pot...

• Consider an alarm system.

• Get a dog. They make lots of noise.

GOING OUT?

• Use timers so lights, radio, and TV go on and off throughout the house.

• For longer trips, be sure to stop mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor collect them daily.

• If you come home and see a broken window or a jimmied door, don’t go in. Confronting a burglar can be dangerous. Phone law enforcement immediately.

• In Paramount, you can have the Volunteers on Patrol make a home check when you are out of town. Call (562) 220-2002.

OTHER TIPS

• Install a wide-angle lens viewer in the front door.

• Never open the door without knowing who is there.

• Motion sensor lights illuminate driveways and walkways.

• Exterior doors should have “dead bolt” locks with a 1-inch strong metal bar into the door frame.

• Sliding doors and windows should all have “ventilation” locks as well as auxiliary locks to bolster security.

• Be sure to include good locks for garage, patio, or other doors that lead outside.

City Volunteer Program Helps Beautify Paramount

Pitch In, Paramount is a City enterprise that o ers volunteers a way to “give back” to the community. It’s a continuation of the City’s previous Lookin’ Good program that ran from the 1980s through the early 2000s.

Pitch In, Paramount has been active for a decade. Volunteers paint, haul away debris, and trim or replace landscaping at the homes of residents-in-need. They spruce up public spaces by picking up trash, removing gra ti, painting fences, and more.

Turnout is always strong from Paramount High School, local churches, and other community groups. City sta provides tools, materials, and basic instruction. The City’s contracted trash hauler, CalMet Services, supplies bins for debris removal.

For more information, please call the City at (562) 220-2002.

Pick It Up, Paramount!

Litter has made a comeback in Paramount.

The City is always on the lookout for trash that is left in the public thoroughfares.

City sta searches our major boulevards daily and throughout the rest of town every week for this blight.

Contractors who maintain the downtown landscaping and all of our tra c medians clean it up, too.

Street sweeping, of course, picks up lots of litter once a week in neighborhoods and twice a week on major streets.

Beyond all that, catch basins trap trash before it enters storm drains, daily pick-ups take place at parks, and 136 public trash cans are emptied twice per week.

But it just doesn’t seem to be enough.

People are leaving litter all over Paramount. And who wants that?

We need everybody’s help to throw out the trash. And not on our streets and sidewalks!

So take a moment, and Pick it Up, Paramount!
