Safety Tips from Fire Rescue
Fire Prevention Week is October 5 - 11 and this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue wants to encourage you to take the following proactive measures to prevent fires and protect your lives, homes and community.
Lithium-Ion Batteries
Use only certified (UL, ETL, or CSA) products with proper charging cables, and stop use immediately if the battery overheats, smells odd, makes noises, or changes shape.
Smoke Alarms
Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level of your home, including basements. Follow manufacturer's instructions for installation or contact Fire Rescue for help, and be sure to test them monthly and replace 9-volt batteries every six months.
Cooking
Never leave the stove unattended while cooking, turn it off if you must leave and always keep a lid nearby to smother small stovetop fires by covering the pan and turning off the burner. If you're unsure about handling the fire, get out and call 9-1-1.
Home Fire Escape Planning
Create and practice a home fire escape plan with two exits per room, a safe meeting spot outside, and regular day and night drills twice a year.
Electrical Safety
Use a qualified electrician for all electrical work, plug major appliances directly into wall outlets and only use extension cords temporarily.
