Youth Scholarship Fund

This fund helps support programs for all youth in Steele County and Adult Therapeutic Recreation Programs. Forms are available at the Park and Recreation Office. Participants must pay 40% of program fees, any late fees, and must show verification of one of the qualifications.

Qualifications for Scholarship

* Current recipients of Free or Reduced Lunch Program * Current recipients of SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or Social Security Benefits * Current recipients of Medical Assistance Program * Other circumstances (will need to explain)

Uniforms for Youth Activities

Participants may keep t-shirts donated by business sponsors for youth baseball & softball, volleyball, squirt and youth basketball. All other uniforms and equipment must be returned to coaches at the end of the season.

Family Ice Fishing at Lake Kohlmier Time: 2:30 – 4:30pm Join us on Lake Kohlmier for an afternoon of ice fishing. Limited equipment and bait will be provided -- holes will be pre-drilled for fishing. This is a FREE event for everyone to attend. Look for more information to come. Backup date: February 9th, 2:30 – 4:30pm.

Parent Tot Open Play

Cost $2.00 per person (Max of $5.00 per family-Children under 2 free) Locations: West Hills Gym Day/Time: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 8am-10am This is an open play program for parents and young children to play together in a warm and dry space over the winter months. During this time, West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center will have the gym reserved for parents and children 6 and under. There will be shortened basketball hoops, balls, a parachute, and other open play items.

Youth Tennis Lessons

YOUTH RECREATION Learn to Skate Hockey

Join us for a fun-filled winter while learning to skate and developing basic hockey skills. The program is divided into three levels: Learn to Skate, U6 and U8 (Mites). “Learn to Skate” is for first time skaters regardless of age. U6 is for players born between 7/1/2012 and 6/30/2014 that already have basic skating skills. U8 (Mites) is for players born between 7/1/2010 and 6/30/2012 that have basic skating skills. The U8 (Mites) level will feature an in-house league with 6 to 8 teams. Players will be divided into equally balanced teams in early to mid-November. All games will be played on half-ice with 3 – 8-minute run time periods. Full equipment is required. We also welcome youth who were born before 7/1/2010 to join us if they are new to skating or ice hockey so they can give it a try. This is Owatonna’s starter program that players progress through before becoming active in Owatonna Youth Hockey Association traveling hockey.

A helmet is required for everyone on the ice. An entire bag of protective equipment is available for rent through the Owatonna Youth Hockey Association rental program for $50 per year. Skates can be leased at Straight River Sports for an entire season for a reasonable cost.

Graduated compression balls in tandem with properly sized racquets and courts help promote success and fun for every student! Yoga is a series of postures and stretches in combination with breathing to develop flexibility and relaxation. Proper alignment of the body will bring balance, strength, and calmness to the participant.

The Owatonna Parks and Recreation Department offers American Red Cross Learn to Swim Programs. The programs are held at the Middle School Pool, West Hills Pool and River Springs Water Park.

Parent/Child Aquatics Level 1/2 – child must be at least 18 months old, parent is in the water Pre-School Aquatics – child must be at least 3 years old, NO PARENT IN THE WATER Level 1 – Intro to Water Skills helps students feel comfortable in and enjoy the water safely Level 2 – Works on giving students success with fundamental aquatic skills Level 3 – Stroke Development builds on Level 2 skills with guided practice in deeper waters Level 4 – Stroke Improvement develops confidence in strokes and improves other aquatic skills Level 5 – Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes Level 6 – Refines strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency & power over greater distances

Lifeguard Training Review Courses

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Review Course is to review all lifeguard training skills including but not limited to the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This course if for currently certified lifeguards set to expire.

(Registration for Lifeguard classes available now)

Prerequisites: 1. Must be a current Red Cross Certified Lifeguard or expired no more than 30 days after your expiration date.

2. Swim 300 yds continuously (crawl & breaststroke) 3. Swim 40 yds with a 10-pound brick, retrieving it from 10 feet of water, using only a kick, holding brick with 2 hands on the chest.

4. You must attend all classes to pass.

Trail Rules: The trail system has been created to provide a variety of recreational uses and opportunities for residents and visitors. To ensure the trail system is a safe and fun place for all users, please follow the rules of the road.

• Stay as near to the right side of the trail as you can while still traveling safely.

• Travel in a consistent and predictable manner.

• Cyclists and in-line skaters should pass on the left when going by others moving in the same direction. Look ahead and back to be sure the lane is clear before pulling out to pass, then give a warning signal by voice, bell or horn before passing.

• Yield when entering or crossing trails and roadways.

• When traveling in a group, use only half the trail, so as not to block the flow of traffic.

• Pets must be on a leash. You are responsible for cleaning up after your pets.

Dispensers with waste disposal bags are available on each trail.

• Trails are recreational. Cyclists and in-line skaters may not race or use excessive speed. Please report any misuse, vandalism, or maintenance problem to 507-444-4321 or 507-444-3800.

Cross Country Ski Trails The Owatonna Parks and Recreation Department maintains and grooms cross country ski trails in the following areas from mid-December to mid-February (if weather and snow conditions allow): Kaplan’s Woods Parkway – from Morehouse Park through Kaplan’s Woods and into Owatonna County Club (8+ miles) Brooktree Golf Course (2 miles)

Dog Park

Located at Chase Lake, the 1.6 acre off-leash park is a great place to give your pooch some exercise and a chance to socialize!

Pickleball Courts

Four dedicated Pickleball courts are located at Morehouse Park. They are located near the dam.

Bike & Skate Park

The Bike and Skate Park is a Tier I park—it is free to use by all patrons. Helmets are required and other safety equipment such as elbow and knee pads are strongly recommended. Please report any damage or needed repairs to the Parks and Recreation Department.

Tennis Courts

City-owned tennis courts are available. Manthey Park Courts (also striped for Pickleball, Brown Park Courts (artificial turf ), Sid Kinyon Court and Dartts Park Courts. Six indoor courts are available at the Tennis Center at West Hills.

Pavilions

Pavilions are available seasonally at Brown Park, Dartts Park (small and large), Fairgrounds Park, Gainey Park, Jaycee Park, Kaplan’s Woods Parkway, Manthey Park (small and large), Mineral Springs Park (small and large), Morehouse Park (large and Warsinski Chalet), and Owatonna Soccer Complex at Lincoln.

Reservations

Reservations may be made up to a year in advance at the Parks & Recreation office. Rates vary by pavilion size and length of rental. The reservation fee and refundable damage deposit must be paid at the time of reservation.

Pavilion Rental Policies Cancellation by the renting party must give notice one month prior to the reservation and the rental fee is refunded, less a $10 cancellation fee. Notice less than one month prior is not refunded. If the Parks and Recreation Department finds it necessary to cancel a pavilion reservation, a full refund is given.

Alcohol is allowed at all parks except: Central Park, Cashman Park, Kaplan’s Woods Parkway and Owatonna Soccer Complex. Glass containers are not allowed in any parks. Permits for large containers are required and are available

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION Our program offers a variety of leisure options for youth and adults with disabilities. We provide an adaptive format as well as opportunities for inclusion.

Our policy within the Therapeutic Recreation program is to plan for the person first, the disability second, and to encourage the independent pursuit of personal leisure interests. Our goal is to make recreation and leisure choices available to everyone, and our objective is to accommodate individuals with necessary adaptations so they may participate as fully as their non-disabled peers.

Adapted Groups

Teen Club This activity group is designed for ages 10-22 who have developmental disabilities and would benefit from social interaction and a place to go to meet friends.

Activities include structured crafts, games, local trips, tours, and attending OHS events as a group.

Night Club This social group is designed for adults 22 years and older, who have developmental disabilities and mental health issues. This group is an extension of Teen Club and functions similarly. Activities are more age appropriate for adults, as we encourage the independent pursuit of leisure interest whenever possible.

Night Club is a place to establish and cultivate friendships through recreation.

Adult Leisure Pursuits is a membership for leisure and recreational pursuits for adults over 50 years of age. Membership is $40.00 per person (includes tax) annually, January through December. As a member you receive discounts to local businesses who are part of our partnership program.

Trips

Benefits of being an Adult Leisure Pursuits member •As a perk of being an Adult Leisure Pursuits member, you will have the first opportunity to register for trips and can continue to register as long as there are openings. Non-members will be allowed to register on the date listed below each trip.

•If we meet the maximum registrations for a trip, all members on the trip will be included in a drawing. One member will receive a trip discount for a future trip.

Rochester Jolly Trolley Holiday light Tour and Dinner– December 17 If this doesn’t get you in the holiday mood, nothing will. We will start by eating supper in Rochester. Once everyone is done eating we will hop on the trolley decorated with holiday lights, garland, and wreaths. We will be stopping at Santa’s workshop and several other festive light displays. This is a 2 hour trolley ride, beverages are welcome on the trolley. Price does not include dinner.

Staying Active

Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute offers the following programs at West Hills Social Commons (contact them at 507-977-2150 to register and to make payment) Chair Aerobics Monday & Thursday 10:30 - 11:15AM $10 per month, $1.25 per class; 1st visit is free. Enjoy a real aerobic workout, without getting out of your chair! This fun program consists of warm-ups, exercises, cool-downs & stretches.

Weight Training for Seniors Mon/Wed/Fri 8:30 - 9:30AM/3:15 - 4:15PM, $25 per month. An exercise therapist leads the group in a program of warm-up exercises, weight lifting exercises with hand-held weights, cool-down exercises and stretching.

Tai Chi Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art and form of stylized, meditative exercise, characterized by methodically slow circular and stretching movements and positions of bodily balance.

Cost: $1 per class

Day: Wednesdays & Fridays

Time: 9:30am

Pilates Pilates is a proven gentle total body workout which strengthens deep back muscles, abdominals, upper and lower body as well as improving flexibility.

This is a very beginner class. Exercises are balanced with stretches throughout.

Class will leave you refreshed and relaxed. Clean mats will be provided for use or bring your own. Instructor: Susan Bernhart.

Cost: $2 per session Treasure Island Resort & Casino Trip – Wednesday, December 11 Days: Mondays & Thursdays Join the trip to Treasure Island Resort and Casino. We will leave the West Hills Time: 9:00-10:00 am Social Commons at 9AM and arrive at Treasure Island around 10:15AM. We will then depart around 2:30PM. All travelers will receive $15 of free slot play and a $3 food voucher.

Yoga Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:30-11:30AM in second floor west meeting room Yoga is a series of postures and stretches in combination with breathing to improve flexibility and relaxation. Proper alignment of the body will bring balance, strength, and tranquility to the participant.

Other Activities Billiards Billiards is available Monday through Friday when SeniorPlace is open. A set time for billiards players to get together is Tuesdays at 8:00 am and Thursdays at 1:00 pm.

Cost: $.50 for 2 hours Bingo Each week there are 19 games and a blackout round. You must be a member of SeniorPlace to play Bingo.

Cost: $.50 per card Days: Fridays Time: 12:30-2:45pm Quilters This creative group of stitchers meets to create warm, colorful quilts. Members of the group have a good time while they share quilting knowledge and skills with each other.

Recycled Greeting Cards With some scissors, a little paper and a lot of creativity, this once anticipated trash is made into another’s treasure. There are lots of ways to be involved. Are you interested in learning how to recycle cards? This group will meet the 1st Monday of each month from 1-3pm.

Golden Tones A musical entertainment troupe composed of singers, musicians and entertainers. You are encouraged to be a part of the Golden Tones that performs at various functions throughout the year. The group prepares to sing at numerous functions in the Owatonna area.

OYVBA is dedicated to the development of junior age athletes by offering them a supportive environment in which athletes are provided conditioning and training in the skills and techniques of competitive volleyball.
